Some Pulldown Advice Needed

I'm working with some video of legacy films, some >50 years old. Unfortunately, much of the original film is unavailable to me. What I have is either DVD or sometimes VHS copies of the telecined results.
When I read about pulldown, it talks about a 3:2 pattern consisting of 3 whole frames and 2 with interlacing. What I instead see seems to be 2 whole frames with 3 interlaced in the five frame group. It also appears that the cadence may not be uniform throughout. If I look at the pattern a some point, and then look at some multiple of 5 frames later, the pattern seems to have shifted.
I've tried all the different options to reverse telecine the clips, but nothing seems to work consistently through the whole clip. Sometimes major sections seem to have been fixed, but later on there is trouble. Is there anything i can do with Cinema Tools to solve this, and is this pattern a telecine result or are there other issues involved.

hello Eugene C,
there are good descriptions of the 3:2 frames to fields relationships elsewhere ... i believe even the FCP manual may have this covered now.
as to irregular cadence of the pattern ... this could be caused by a number of things, but the most obvious i can think of are:
- video fields doubled somewhere during a bad dub or encoding process
- editing of the video after telecine
if there are obvious edits in the video material, you may try breaking it down into separate shots (one quicktime per shot) and doing reverse telecine on each shot, each one having its own cadence.
if not, you may be stuck doing lengthy troubleshooting ... do a reverse telecine on the whole clip so that it begins correctly ... find where it starts to go incorrect, go back to the original, break the clip there, repeat the process starting with that clip.
there is another possibility: that your original film was not transferred with proper speed lock and therefor improper and irregular 3:2 and pulldown occurred ... if this is the case, the 3:2 cadence will change in the middle of shots with no apparent pattern ... if this is the case there is no real way (easy or otherwise) to remove the irregular patter of doubled fields.

  • Some general advice needed please

Until today my network was DSL, AE802.11g with ethernet external drive and usb printer, a cube and printer on a remote AE802.11g and an express for the stereo. I had 3 laptops connecting except from one room that I want to move a printer to and use as an office. So I bought some more kit to extend the network.
A new AE802.11n and another express arrived today. Because the house is big with thick walls I think I need at least one airport set up as a relay rather than remote. After reading the discussions I managed to get the new AE set up and connected to the DSL. but, I seldom get more than 1 or 2 AE or expresses show up in airport utility making it hard to set them to join the network which seems to keep disappearing. The most remote AE is near one of the expresses but does not see the network.
Any suggestions for the optimal settings for each device? And what order should I set them up in?

Thank you. Having the airports all in proximity was the key and, of course, I eventually found the same advice in an apple help file. I set the new AExtreme up as WDS main with an ethernet disk for backups and music. An old AExtreme as WDS remote serves the Cube by ethernet and a usb printer. An AExpress as WDS remote serves one stereo. The other AExpress is WDS relay serving another stereo and helping the network reach the office where the last old AExtreme is WDS remote with another USB printer. The 3 mac laptops are happy. I have yet to try any PCs.

  • Some good advice needed please!

    Hi
We are planning to develop an application that offers a web service on the Internet and since we are more familiar with J2SE than J2EE we were thinking about using
javax.jws.WebService and javax.jws.WebMethod in a good old Desktop application. To handle possible high traffic we are planning to use java.util.concurrent.ThreadPoolExecutor.
Our question is ... Assuming adequate hardware and bandwith, will this approach do the job well or are there any pitfalls that we should be aware of?
    Many thanks in anticipation.

I posted to your other thread some suggestions for Network connections.
Specific to your question here, the more relevant information entered in the Network panel, the more specific the Network connection. Otherwise, default values set the system to "automatic" which means time can be potentially wasted searching for a Network connection, and hence, the lag-time. The DHCP client ID box adds more specific information for Safari to access, thereby increasing speed. I'm guessing here, but since you still have an E-mail account with Cox, you may have access to their Network.
As I mentioned in my other posts, you may want to speak with Adelphia directly about your browsing experience. They may have other codes you can try to enhance browsing performance.

  • Some advice needed

Hi I am new to after effects though I have had some useful advice thx to a few posts I am at a stop point unsure how to continue.
I have 2 parts of my fathers wedding video in total about 8gb I just want to cut part of on and splice them so he can post it on youtube.
Though I have no issue cutting and splicing if I use my avi settings for render I have to literally cut 50% of my quality to get even under 50 gb and same with QuickTime.
If there is a easy way to literally just crank out the video feeds in a single movie without all the extra work the program add to get a fine say 20gb or less please
    explain to me how.
IF not does anyone know a easy to learn program that i can just cut up and splice 2 video and turn them into 1 without a massive file increase?
Yes BTW i am using the compressed QuickTime and avi formats and I even tired spacing out QuickTime keyframe times to reduce file size.
    Thx

After Effects is the wrong tool, it's not an editing application.  You haven't specified anything about your footage, your Operating System  or your computer hardware, so it's hard to provide you a specific answer.
Premiere Pro is Adobe's editing software.  Chances are, if you have After Effects you may also have Premiere Pro installed.
But most computers have simple editing software built in:  iMovie on a Mac, or Windows Movie Maker on Windows.  There are other free editing applications available on both platforms - just Google for free video editing software and you'll find examples.

  • ADVICE needed - FCPX projects -- FCP7 workflow (not X27)

    Hey all,
    I need some sage advice.
I have been working on a huge project for over a year now on location in Bosnia.
All footage has been shot on the 5D mrk3 and c300 cameras.
    My FCPX Workflow
While on location I was importing / organizing / syncing / labeling and adding subtitles into FCPX.
    - I have each camera in it's own event and project.
    - I have the video synced (using Plural Eyes) with the Zoom audio files.
    - I have added subtitles from my translator using Annotation edit.
    - I have then used the TimeCode generator to give the entire sync'ed, subbed "master timeline" a consistent reference throughout and so I always know exactly where that clip lives in the "master timeline" once I start editing.
    - Lastly I have added the "file name" using the Text "right" generator in FCPX so I always know what day it is.
I would then create a separate compound clip for all the video from that day, the external audio, and the subtitles. (so that is 3 Compound clips. (see pics below)
Add the TimeCode and right text generators...
Select all and make it all a C. Clip... I did this so nothing would shift.. the Subs would be in sync and the timecode would always be the same no matter how and where the footage was used....
    My Question / Challenge
OK so now my producers have found an editor and this editor needs to edit this project in FCP 7.
I am in Chicago they are in Berlin... I will join them in Berlin but want to do as much prep work in the 1.5 months leading up to my travel date here in Chicago.
They have all the footage and FCPX projects and events and now need to get them into FCP 7
the app X to 7 does not import FCPX generators and has some quirks importing text (I am not sure how it will handle my subs as we are just beginning the import / converting process)
What I don't want is to loose all the good work that I have done on my end to be organized and I absolutely NEED the subtitles included with the sync'd footage.
Does anyone have any advice and / or know where I can turn to figure out what to do in this situation?
the viewer with subs, timecode, and file stamp
    the timeline broken apart
    the timeline as compound clips

    @ Russ H
Yeah I thought of that too...
Just using the flatened verssion as a reference file that can be enabled and disapbled as necessary hoever like you pointed out that is "not ideal" AND would actually be pretty time consuming as I am dealing with
45 Days of footage totalling 200+ hours...
So it actually takes about an hour to render and export each 3-4 hour days of flattened footage.
But that may be the best soltuion of the not so great options I have in front of me...
    @Meg The Dog
Thanks, and yes I will be doing all of that sans the assistant editor.
One of the largest issues is that I am not a FCPX expert so I can't do that...
AND the budget is a bit tight to hire a second editor for this job PLUS it is in Berlin (I am in Chicago)
So while I will be there for the editing process the lead / post time is going to be pretty tight and I need to make sure that all the footage is online, sync'd, subbed and ready to go once I step off the plane.
I agree that in an ideal situation your suggestion would be best if the budget allowed for it...

  • Russian and Chinese Flash movies - general advice needed please

    Hi all -
This is a plea for some general 'jumping off' advice. I am an experienced Flash developer but now have a request to convert an existing xml-fed movie into both Russian and Chinese. I speak neither of these languages so we have had the content of the movie translated by a professional translation service.
The movie contains both png/jpgs with embedded text - created in Fireworks and also (for the bulk of the content) external xml files. I still need to be able to develop in an English environment - so purchasing a full version of Flash/Fireworks in Russian/Chinese would be folly. How should I go about this? If it is a matter of fonts - where should I get them from? And are there any considerations to be met with regards the xml files? Basically, I would really appreciate some general advice on this subject as it is completely new ground for me.
    Much obliged,
    Hugh

  • Aperture Library Issues on NAS - Advice Needed

    List-
Need some practical advice here. I've got a 90GB Aperture library that resides on a NAS (QNAP 419P II) that is experiencing major issues. Understood that having the library live on a non-HFS+, non-local drive is not advised by Apple, but it's been there for two years with no issues to speak of.
I had a power failure occur that seems to have done some damage to the library in some way. Upon opening the library, I got an error that said that there were inconsistencies with the file and that it needed to be repaired. I repaired it, and noticed something strange. In almost all files, the picture resolution was poor and both the camera and lens information was gone--in addition to the fact that the Adjustments capability was disabled.
I ran the Aperture first aid and ran all three processes--concluding with the full library rebuild. It looked to be successful and resolution, previews, and picture info returned--but halfway through the preview reprocessing the process just stopped and the beach ball of death ensued. I let it run overnight and it never recovered. I had to force quit and now if I reopen the file it say that there are inconsistencies and that the library needs to be repaired, which won't help.
I also tried to move the library off of the NAS an onto the local drive, but encountered an Error - 50 message--something that apparently is well known in the NAS world where Mac permissions get screwy when dealing with non HFS+ drives.
I have a backup of the original library, but it is sitting in a cloud repository (CrashPlan) that will take time and money to restore.
All of the masters are intact in the Aperture directory, and I have very few major adjustments made to any photos. Aperture is really just a repository for me.
So any practical advice would be appreciated as to how I can create a new local Aperture library and get all of the existing photo files there. I am pretty much giving up on the idea of getting the existing NAS-based library to work properly, so this is more of a real-world question on how to create a new library and eliminate whatever issues there are with the other Aperture files. It looks like everything in the Aperture package is in place, but the library itself is just malfunctioning.
I am also considering moving everything into iPhoto as well, as Aperture may simply be more than I need for my usage. If is is faster and a but simpler to manage, that could be the right answer as well.
Thanks in advance for any ideas or guidance.

The problem is most likely with the library itself being located on the NAS.
But you can have a hybrid solution where the library is located on your internal drive while the actual image files are located externally, eg on your NAS. Image files stored within the Apeture library are called "managed" while image files stored externally are called "referenced". Whichever approach you take, the process is the same:
If you try to make a new Library from your masters, you will lose your project structure. The resulting mess will be in accordance to how you created your projects. Basically, if you look at your Masters folder, that's what you'll end up with when you import your masters. If that isn't a problem, the process is simple
    Step 1: Prep.
Move or copy your masters out of the library bundle to a folder (to make them more accesible in finder).
    Step 2: Create new library.
Within Aperture, from the File menu "Switch to Library -> Other/New..." to create a new Library on your internal drive.
Set the preferences to indicate previews/faces etc. I'd turn these off for now as they will slow you down.
    Step 3: Import your images.
Within your new library, File -> Import - Folders as Projects. This gives you a dialog where you specifiy what and where to import.
If you choose "Import folders as: Folders and Projects" you will get a folder structure that matches the Masters folder, with projects at the end of the chain with names like 20120213-200100.
If you choose "Import folders as: Projects and Albums" you will get a single Project called "Masters" with a folder and Album structure that matches the Masters folder.
Neither of these will look particularly great. If you want to avoid this mess, here's what I'd try.
Fix your library again like you did before. After the rebuild, go to the Aperture activity window (SHIFT + CMD + 0) and cancel the preview generation process before it has chance to hang. This should give you a sem-functional library, hopefully functional enough for the next step:
Select all images and use File -> Relocate Original to move your original files out of the library. During this process you can specify that the originals are stored in sub-folders that match the project name, within a parent folder if required.
This gives you a much neater structure for importing into your new library where the projects will get the folder names (which will be your existing project names). It may not be perfect, for example if you have the same project name in different folders and don't/can't segregate them, but it's a lot cleaner than just importing your masters folder.

  • Optimal Configuration Advice Needed

First let me say this is my first Mac and I'm loving it!
    Current System Config:
Mac Pro (early 2008) 2.8GHZ Quad Core 8GB RAM
Stock Seagate 7200.10 320GB Hard Drive
Today I picked up two WD 640GB WD6400AAKS drives @$90/each - therefore re-evaluating system configuration. Need some good advice - have read the forum but having trouble putting all the pieces together in my head.
    First Question - system drive.
I will be replacing the current stock drive with one of the faster Caviar. Based on what I've read on this forum this drive should only have the OS and applications - no data files. Also, I've seen recommendation to partition the drive and use only the first 2/3 (first partition) and essential abandon the other 220GB - for optimal performance. Is this correct?
    Second Question - OS installation.
Coming from Windows, I am a BIG fan of "clean installs". Since owning the Mac I've been testing every application under the sun - so a lot of installing/trashing has been going on.
I am thinking this is a good opportunity to "wipe the slate clean" - do a new install of the Mac OS on the new Caviar drive rather than cloning the existing drive.
    Is this a good idea - bad idea - pros/cons - easy/difficult?
And how exactly would I go about this - I need a step-by-step please as I am queen of screw ups.
Also, does security have any impact? I've enabled everything except file encryption.
Also, I'm in the midst of zeroing these drives is Mac OS Extended (Journaled) the right format to use for both?
Question Three - To RAID or not to RAID
I know NOTHING of RAIDs (and yes, I read the Wiki) - but I've never worked with them and I don't know if it's a good idea - or overkill for my needs - or if I'm just asking for trouble.
    I use my system for:
    - Photoshop / Illustrator / Dreamweaver / Flash
    - Lightroom
    - Silverfast (scanning)
    - iTunes
    - Development (Windows-based)
For development I'm either using NetBeans on the Mac or working in Windows via VMWare Fusion. It is not uncommon for me to have two or three VM's running at the same time - typically two are servers, the third my Windows Desktop for all Windows apps.
VM's are resource intensive (i.e. CPU and memory hogs). Data files are typically smaller. Data is read/write to the Mac folders outside the VMs - no data is stored on the virtual drives within the VM's - I am way too paranoid for that. however However, 8GB memory is barely enough when all three are running so swapping/paging may occur (or whatever the **** it's called).
I may eventually work with video - but this is not an immediate need.
In any case, here is what I've concluded on my own - but wouldn't mind confirmation or some expert advice so I'm doing things right the first time.
    - the Mac OS should be on it's own drive - period. (bay 1)
    - Photoshop should have a dedicated scratch disk - period. (bay 4)
This will be the existing stock 320GB drive.
The question I guess is if I should stick with one data drive (that being the other 640GB drive) - or get yet another one and create a two disk RAID - but what would I gain by doing this - really?
Also, I'm wondering if the Windows VM's should be on their own partition - or should they be on their own disk even? Is there a performance advantage to doing on or the other?
I don't have a need for bootcamp - VMWare rocks!
Are there any other considerations I need to be aware of?
I've also been looking at this article --> http://www.macgurus.com/productpages/guides/MoveUsers.php
Which indicates that I should use only the first third of the drive for the Mac OS (220GB) and use the rest only for back up - and do the reverse with the data drive. Again, to maximize the drive performance.
So - in conclusion I'm just looking for feedback as to what direction to take in this configuration. I would like to achieve the best performance possible - but at the same time not go through a lot of trouble for what would be a marginal performance boost.
Also I should mention I currently back up via Time Machine to an external 200GB Seagate HD. So I have that in the configuration as well.

RAID doesn't have a problem with VMware or shouldn't.
A RAID can be used for almost anything and in multiple configurations.
You could first format each drive into 1/3 and 2/3 and then stripe the first outer volume on each for scratch, and use the 2/3 for data if you want.
Same with internal and external. Just a matter of how many drives. And all of it depends on size of files you edit with and performance you want. External just means you need to look at controllers and type of cases. One RAID for backups, another for live data, 3rd for scratch.
If you work with 2GB files, just doing a save might take longer than some like, so they could save their work to a RAID.
For first starting out, just try with a dedicated drive for scratch, or even 1/3 of one of your drives for scratch volume. But if your scratch needs more than 200GB of space, you might be faced with a choice of dedicating a drive, or going with stripped RAID.
The pdf guide also has instructions on testing your setup with real work files to see what works best. You will probably change what you do and how you configure your system over time hopefully to make better use.
But first, use a basic setup until you have outgrown what it can do, if you do.
A great place to find reviews of RAID controllers and external cases is AMUG.

  • Advice needed on speeding up load times.

I need some practical advice on ways in which I can speed up the load time on one particular page of my website. This page: http://www.thinksmartresumes.com.au/%2499-designs.html
I know there are hundreds of localised factors including Internet connection but lots of people have now commented that this page take over 30 seconds to load. I know it's a big page with lots of png's and links. What can I do to speed things up???
Any advice welcome apart from splitting the page up (that's not an option). I can't read code btw.
    Cheers all.

    Hi
I tried to check the page which loads slow and can see the reason, while opening the page , browser downloads 10.1 mb of data for that single page out of which 9.7 mb is only for images which you have used on page.
The images as I have checked are png format and defines for states.
The only option you can use is optimize the images you have used, for example if you have used images with opacity or states effect, try to create the image outside of Muse with any editor like Photoshop and then use that image which should lower down the size in comparison to defined states.
Resize the images , use web fonts etc , these things you can check which would help in loading the page faster.
    Thanks,

  • Advice needed on Waits and Timeouts - 8i on HPUnix

I need some straight advice...We are running 8i on HPUnix. We have been tuning this thing for 6 weeks now and have most things under control (disk I/O, various cache hit ratios, etc.)...but...we still see a large number of waits...at least I think its a large number.
Question 1. If the instance has been up for 72 hours and I see a count of io done waits for DBW0 of 2,966,179 with 78041 timeouts (as an example), is this a large number? Nothing I have seen in the Oracle documentation gives me a sense of scale.
Question 2. What events do we have the ability to tune?
Question 3. For those that we can tune...how do you tune them?

  • Video intensive work on Mac Pro? Advice Needed

    Hi everyone,
I've been originally saving up for a while now for an iMac 24" as it offers the best specification price wise. But now I leaning on the Mac Pro and therefore need some advice.
I know that there are alot of posts on advice - need to buy mac etc. so therfore I would really appreciate if I am afforded some help.
I am mostly going to do ALOT of video encoding (via handbrake) and I am looking for the best configuration available to achieve lowest waiting time.

I think you should go back and look at the other threads with advice, your budget. There is "ideal" and "affordable."
Will it pay for itself in 24 months so you can afford the next revision at that time?
    Start with an 8-Core 3GHz.
Add a Port Multiplier controller and two drive cases, 5 drives each, nearly 400MB/sec RAID.
    Throw in 8GB RAM.
Add in costs for software upgrades, two sets of backups, four internal 500GB drives.
Seagate has 750GB, as does WD. Hitachi has their $450 1000GB monster.
Give yourself time to build, test, and optimize your setup, and expect to change it over time as you learn more.
Can't afford that? then trim the 8-core. But Apple has shown how efficient next generation applications already are for video when it comes to 3GHz 8-core Mac Pro.

  • Looking for some workflow advice

I'm starting work on a project that has media coming from several different sources, and I'd like some workflow advice. I'm using the CS6 Production Premium suite on a Windows7 computer. My primary video source is a Canon XF-100 shooting 24/1080p MXF video, but I'll also be incorporating AVC-HD shots taken with a 60D, XA10, GoPro, and iPhone. So, here are my main questions:
    1. Should I transcode or not? Most of the footage (at least 2/3rds or so) will be from the XF-100, which Premiere can edit natively. I'm inclined just to put the AVC-HD clips straight into an MXF-formatted project and let Premiere render them in the sequences as needed. But I'm also wondering if it would be better for overall quality and consistency to transcode everything into the same format before importing into the project and set the project to that format.
    2. If I do transcode, what format? Should I just convert the AVC-HD stuff to MXF for use in an MXF-native project? Or should I convert everything to another format entirely?. If so, which one? (I'm thinking AVC-Intra 100 at 24/1080p, but I'm not sure.)
Any experienced sages out there want to offer their $0.02? Thanks in advance,
    Stu

transcoding will not produce any better quality. you can actually degrade the quality in most cases, unless transcoding to raw.  transcoding is usually done for proxy editing to allow for faster editing, or compatibility, if the original file cannot be read by the editing application. premiere pro usually handles mixed formats well, just make sure to either create the sequence from a clip that matches the destination format or create a sequence manually and specify the format that will be used for export.
if you do need to transcode to get some files to read, the avid dnxhd codec is a popular choice as it takes very little cpu and gpu resources to read.  it has several quality options you can choose from, but it is limited to 1080p.  if you transcode for faster editing (proxy editing), use dnxhd 36 8bit, and relink to the originals when done to keep their quality.

  • Looking for some help/advice on LabVIEW

Hello, I'm completely new to LabVIEW but have a project to do and was wondering if anyone could give me some help/advice/ideas.
I need to use LabVIEW to interface with a power meter (Agilent E4419B) via a GPIB cable. I have a GP10 card. I have the drivers from the NI website. Can anyone think of any other software/hardware I may require? Or any advice about the best way to go about this from experience?

Yeah sorry I am being very vague!
Basically I am wondering how you actually go about setting up LabVIEW to communicate with the meter - is all I need a GPIB card and cable? How do the drivers actually work? Do I need to use any different commands to interact with the meter or do the drivers serve this purpose?

  • Advice needed - IE Browser

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum but I need some good advice on where to start. I like the idea of keeping my applications 100% Java or as near as possible. I am not a windows programmer and I haven't used the ActiveX Bridge yet.
Problem: I need to capture events like url's and mouseovers etc from an IE Browser and send actions to the IE Browser. I need to do this using a Java application on a windows OS (doesn't matter which one). Any good pointers to where to start would be very welcome.
Or should I give up and use C++ ?

Well, at the risk of being battered by the gallery
here: you application seems a natural fit for
JavaScript.this seems pretty reasonable to me too.
Problem: I need to capture events like url's and mouseovers etc from an IE Browser and send
actions to the IE Browser. I need to do this using a Java application on a windows OS (doesn't > matter which one). Any good pointers to where to start would be very welcome.this confuses me.
you are capturing events from where? (IE or java application)
passing them to where (IE or java application)
you mention IE for both instances but than also talk about the java application so i really don't understand the flow here... could you clarify this.
if you are going from java to ie through you could probably just a combination of java, javascript. if you are doing something more complex you will need something more complex. i have not used any of the technologies that send allow you to access win32 apis or apps from java directly very much. if you know how to do it quickly in c++ yourself it might be wise.
what you could do is write some sort of interface to use in java to access the IE API and then write an implementation using native methods. this would allow you to get things going now while making everything flexible so you can plug-in a pure java solution later.
    well that's my two-cents

  • Advice needed regarding replacing the HD

    Hi
I have bought a 160GB drive for my last generation Powerbook. When trying to remove the old drive the two outermost screws holding the actual HD in will not budge at all. I have removed all the other screws, and I'm not new to this, having happily replaced HDs in Titanium Powerbooks and recently in a MacBook Pro. But these two screws are completely stuck. I have the correct size screwdrivers and have actually already damaged the heads of two screwdrivers trying to get the screws loose, but have not damaged the screws at all. Do I have to admit defeat and hand it over to a workshop? And in that case can they do a better job than I can or will they just round the screws off?
Does anyone have any experience of such a problem?
    Thanks
    Matthew Whiting

You have gotten some excellent advice, and it will probably serve to get your screws out. But I wanted to add my 2¢ for some remedies of last resort just in case you need them. This does not come from any knowledge of powerbooks, just of getting out stuck screws.
If you can safely apply a little heat to the screw head without harming anything else, this could help. You could use a low power soldering iron and you don't want to heat it up more than about 200º. This can do several things. If there is Loctite on the screw, it will soften it. It will also help the WD-40 to penetrate. And because of the difference in the coefficient of expansion between steel and aluminum, it will make the screw very slightly looser in the hole.
And if all else fails and you do have to drill something out, you should be aware that there are such things as left-handed drill bits. You can get a set of 5 from Snap-on, the smallest of which is 1/8". You will also need a reversible drill motor. The thing about drilling out a screw with a left-handed drill bit is that it will sometimes bite into what's left of the screw head well enough to break it loose and back it out, since it is turning in the proper direction to do this. A regular right-handed drill bit rotates in a direction to tighten, not to loosen.
Hopefully you won't need any of this information, especially if you have already applied the tiny bit of oil to be soaking into the threads for a few days while you attend to your baby daughter. But wanted you to have it just in case.
    Good luck!
