Some tools acting strange

Sometimes it happens to me that my tools turn into a simple cross, all exept the magnifying glass, hand tool, text tool, and path/direct selection tools. I'm using CS5 now, it has also happened when I have used PS Elements 4. If I open a new document, all the tools are normal, but if I open the one I've been working with, the problem appears. Why is this happening?

Symptoms: Every time you start Photoshop, you receive the prompt to confirm the deletion of Photoshop's preferences, or
Photoshop tools act strangely, as if a modifier key was held down all the time: you can only draw straight lines, you sample colors rather than paint/fill, the cursor has a + sign, etc.
AND: You are running Mac Os 10.6.5 or 10.6.6.

Apple had made a change in 10.6.5 in one of its APIs that affects other programs (Photoshop does not use it), and the result is that they interfere with Photoshop, that receives information that modifier keys (CTRL, Command, Option, Shift) are pressed, when they are not. Adobe reported the bug to Apple, but it was too late to be included in 10.6.6.
The solutions are
a) Upgrade to 10.6.7
b) An Adobe Employee has made an unofficial interim fix for this bug. You can download it and have more information on this post: 72.
This is one of those cases where Photoshop has the symptom of a bug, but the cause of that bug is not in its code.

Sounds to me like Adobe was probably relying on undocumented behavior in the CGEventPost routine. Apple is free, of course, to change undocumented behavior of any of their system APIs all they like, since you're not supposed to be using such things. Developers are supposed to stick to the documented behaviors in the APIs. If they don't, they can try to save face as Adobe is by blaming Apple, but the fact is, it's not Apple's fault, any more than it's my fault if someone picks up a flower pot from my front porch and misuses it by throwing through someone else's windshield.
As Barbara has observed, sounds like a case of Blame-Displacement Syndrome.

Blur tool acting strangely

I am trying to use the Blur tool to soften some faces. I duplicate the image first and work on the duplicate. I think all my settings are normal.
When I try to draw on a specific area (just one click, or one click-and-drag), other areas of the photo are also affected, in addition to the area just under the brush.
What's wrong?

Anytime a tool is acting strangely, I would suggest resetting it.
Select your tool. Right click on its' icon on the top Options bar.
Screenshot example is the Type Tool, but this should explain it.

PSE7 on Win 8.1 runs, but on some tools have strange, linear pointers

PSE7 on Win 8.1 runs, but on some tools (like Crop, Zoom, Eye dropper - the other are normal, with usuall arrow) have strange linear pointers. Maybe the problem is HD screen, not Win 8.1? Any ideas, any help, please?
I changed my computer for a new one, with 1920x1080 HD screen. Some time ago I tried PSE 11 free trial, but I did not like it, but PSE 7 I love. Anything I can do to run it on HD screen, Win 8.1.

Right click on your desktop and select Screen Resolution.
Then on the next screen click on Make text and other items larger or smaller
In the next screen try a setting of Smaller-100% (default)
If that makes everything too small try setting a Custom Sizing Option and use 125% or 149%

Pen tool acting strange again.

When I'm drawing a path and undo a crappy point photoshop assumes that the next time I click, I want to start a new line instead of continuing the old line. I have to click on one of the points again to tell photoshop that I want to continue the line, which is kind of a pain. Photoshop used to do that automatically. Anyway I can get that feature back?

I did a quick test on my windows 8.1 system. backspace removes a single point but deselects the path, requiring you to select the path first to continue. Where as ctrl-z (undo just removes the last point keeping the path selected. Ctrl-alt-z will step back through the points removing each one individually keeping the path selected. It did not make difference if I used paths or shapes, both worked the same.
Funny I never needed to undo a point before, I just redid the point later on.

Some adobe fireworks cs5 panel acting strange.... how to fix it

Hello everyone, I had a little problem with adobe firework cs5, nothing big. Some of the Adobe Fireworks CS5 panel is acting strange: special character panel don’t show any character when I want to insert a special character when I finish create a text. Image editing panel don’t show any editing feature. Patch panel kept on blinking over and over again.
I try to uninstall over and over again but this don’t seem to fix this issue.

I'm having the same problem with the Paths, Image Editing and Color Palette panels. I updated to the latest version of Flash Player 10.3.183.10. Still doens't work.

DW acting strange - does not go to code view

My Dreamweaver CS3 has started acting strangely since I
upgraded to a new version of CS3 studio.
I have been working with CS3 for a while now without needing
too much of an adjustment from DW8.
However, I just bought a new computer so I had to reinstall
all my software.
On the new box, DW is acting mighty strange:
1) When I am in Layout view and click on an element to go to
the corresponding line of code for the element it no longer goes to
the line. However, it does when I r-click on it. It is a bit
annoying since it also opens the contextual menu at the same time.
2) When I am in code view (which is 99% of the time) and I
click on an element, it no longer shows me the corresponding CSS
rule in the CSS pane. Again, if I r-click sometiomes it works, but
this one is not reliable either way. Sometimes it works if I double
click, but most of the time it doesn't.
3) The comment icon on the code toolbar is often grayed out.
No reason I can see and just as often it wil work on the same line
of code where it didn't work a minute before.
I combed the preferences line by line without success.
On my old computer I never had any issues like this. I find
it very strange and it is crimping my workflow considerably. Is
anyone familiar with theis behavior or how to fix it?

The times I have seen others post things like this, it's been
due to a bad
installation - reinstalling fixes it.

PREFERENCES? No way that I know of.
SNIPPETS? Copy the Configuration/Snippets folder from the
USER-specific
application folder and paste to a similar location on the new
computer.

IBook acting strange...erase and reinstalled...it's starting to be strange

My iBook was acting strangely...I can't connect to the wireless server, though ISP, network settings and Airport are all correct and the connection is visible and the strength of the connection will change. I cannot load any internet pages. In addition, my iDisk icon disappeared, then on restart, it reappeared, but I have no access to it. A "copy of previous iDisk" then appeared on my desktop with all of the contents, but I can't move them from this version as it says I do not have access. So, I started looking at the logs, to see what, if any, errors there were. I didn't have access to the security log and a few others - although I'm the only user account on this computer. Needless to say, I'm no expert so I "spotlighted" some of the things showing up in the logs. Spotlight returned articles on Apache and XTools (Xcode?) - neither of which I installed (I think Apache might come included). I looked and sure enough, XTools was on my hard drive with many, many files - most with the name or extension of pb or pbx. I started to dig a little deeper in the program and noticed some scripts in the vein of when user enters/types "xyz" initiate process or replace with "zyx", etc. I saved some of these files to the desktop, powered off and restarted. When I opened the desktop after the restart, all of the files were in the trash - not by my doing. I removed them and locked them to the desktop until I could figure out what happened. Then, they disappeared, my computer shut down and when I tried to restart, I couldn't get past the spinning gear.
I took this to the store, they checked it, said they could recognize a drive, that I should archive and reinstall. I did this, things still acted strangely. I called AppleCare, they said to back up everything and reinstall.
I did this, now am finding repairs are needed through disk utility for security and authorization priviledges. I repair, go back in a few hours, run it again, just to satisfy my curiosity and the same repairs are needed for disk permissions.
A friend has uttered the horrible "trojan horse" phrase to me...as I download regularly from LimeWire. I'm not sure what a next step would be to free the iBook of it's quirkiness.
Sorry for the long post...but it's been an eventful few days.

You can ignore any permission repair that states "We are using special...". I'm not sure about Tiger but Panther has a few others that come up if the cron maintenance scripts have run.
Other than the repeating permission repairs, is it running OK now?

I tested it and I fill in a city in rideshare from and press enter and the icon of this city appears in the map, then I fill in a city in rideshare to and press enter and the icon of this city appears in the map as well. Then I click on one of the icons in the map and I can fill in a ride. Only the visible dropdown menu's act strange and choosing has no effect. That is the problem!?
Any suggestions?

Don't you get a pop-up window if you click the start or end flag on the map?
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Problem with arrow keys in some tools

So, as most of you know, you can use the arrow keys on your keyboard to change the corner radius of some tools, to add or remove segments of the spiral shape etc. One tap should adjust your tool settings in fine increments. But in my case when i tap on the arrow key it makes huge changes. The same thing is with the "C", "X", "F", "V". So i can't use these tools properly. Does someone know how to deal with this issue? Thanks in advance!

Yes, i'm using latest Wacom Bamboo Fun.
I just tried to use my MacBook's touchpad instead of tablet and arrow keys work fine. That confirms the Wacom Tablet bug. It's kinda strange that there's no discussions anywhere on this topic. Hope there will be a solution soon. So now i'll have to use touchpad when i work in Illustrator. Thank you for your answer, it helped.

Files Made in CS5.1 Layers Palette Acts Strangely When Opened in CS6

I have files that were created in Illustrator CS5.1 that when opened in CS6, the layers palette acts strangely; the names of layers are not there unless you mouse over, very odd. Has anyone else experienced this? I do have a Pantone Live Plugin installed on Illustrator CS5.1, could this be creating some strange issue? Thank you.

Disk utility is acting strange

Hello,
My Disk Utility is acting strange: I get inconsistent results on First Aid.
I get either "Volume Bit Map needs minor repair", "Keys out of order", "Invalid node structure", "Invalid volume file count", "Invalid volume free block count", or "Volume Header needs minor repair". I click Repair Disk. And after some clicking, the problems seem to go away, showing “the volume appears to be ok”. But the problem is that when I hit Verify Disk a couple of times, or a few minutes later, Disk Utility finds these problems again.
Does anybody know what might be going on here? This is my external backup drive; my internal Macintosh HD is fine. Well Disk Utility says so....

Verify Disk performs what is known as "live verification" and may sometimes give spurious errors. This is what might be happening. To be sure, this really must be done from Disk Utility booted either from an external Volume or from the Install Disk. I would go straight to Repair Disk and not bother with Verify. Permissions Repair, on the other hand, should be done from the normal boot Volume.
How were you doing "Repair Disk"? You probably know that option will be dimmed out when you are booted normally.

Why is my Ipod shuffle acting strange?

Ever since I put certain songs on my Ipod Shuffle, it has acted strangely with those somgs. For example, when I try to skip one of the songs, it instead goes back to the beginning. The same thing can be said for going back in the song list. Sometimes, after doing it fast enough, it changes the VoiceOver language for no reason from English to a language I can't identify. This is even wierder when the song title is in English. Some of the songs I added are not llayed at all, or when I play a voiceover of one of the songs, then go back to hear the name of it again, it says a different title. This happens only with these songs, which is about 8 sings, but the Ipod only plays 5 or 6, and it says one title one second, and another title the next. Is it the audio files? I have erased all of the music, then re-synced it, but it did not help. This problem is very complicated and strange. Also, this all happens when the songs are in order, as I do not listen to music when it is shuffled.

Iphone 4 and iphoto upgraded to latest - now acting strange

i just updated my iphone 4 and the latest iphoto software - and now it's acting strange:
when i've taken new photos on the iphone and plug it in to the imac, to load the pics into iphoto, it shows the latest photos as well as some random photos from 6 months ago.
before the updates i would just plug in and only the newest photos would show up.
any idea what's going on?
