Sony EX3 footage

Hi,
I have Final Cut Pro on my power mac, but on my new macbook pro I only have final cut express - now I see XDCAM doesnt work on FC express but is there a way of getting the footage from the sony ex3 on there. The only way I managed is exporting it as low quality, but I need decent quality.
Cheers for any help
Damion

You'd need to convert the EX3 footage to AIC (Apple Intermideiate Codec) for editing in FCE.

  • Exporting sony ex3 footage to avi file

I am newly to adobe premier cs5. I am working with footage of Sony Ex3 in PR Cs5 and want to export it's footage to DV avi format while doing so picture quality is loss. what to do any suggestion?

I wanted to convert three test files to video for windows but felt the mac conversion programs were too expensive just for client testing. I'm running Parallels and found a great program called OJOsoft Total Video Converter. I output the FCP timeline to the desktop using the H.264 codec. Using parallels the file shows up on the windows desktop. Using that workflow I have been able to convert to avi, video for windows and other windows centric files.
PS It was a Sony EX3 timeline and the results were stellar.

  • Sony Camcorder EX3 footage to AVI - What's the Best Way?

I'm trying to convert HD footage to SD AVI, but so far the AVI versions I've done have a jerking effect. I've exported footage from Final Cut Pro, then run through Compressor to create an AVI (.avi) file, but get this jerky footage. Any suggestions are appreciated.

  • Footage shoot on a sony EX3

I have got some footage shoot on a sony EX3 cam. They have cpoied only the video clip with out support file. I tried to import them to adobe premiere pro 5.5 but I couldnt. How Can I?

You might be able to view and convert the files using Sony EXcam browser http://www.sony.co.uk/res/attachment/file/10/1193315621810.zip
Because the folder structure is not there, spanned clips might not work and it may come up with the wrong number of audio tracks. The software is free so it is worth a try.

  • Workflow recommendations for SONY EX3/DV PAL 16:9/& a bit of AVCHD

    Hi there,
I'm considering buying a SONY EX3 camera for an HD documentary project.
However, this would be a one-off (for the moment) and the bulk of my work is still PAL DV, as most TV in the UK is SD. So, if I am to use the EX3 as my main workhorse over my Z1, as I understand it, the EX3 can shoot in 720P 25 (Progressive) and 720P 50 (interlaced), and there are easy set ups for these formats within Final Cut Pro once the Sony plug in software for the EX3 is installed. FCP will then edit this material natively.
What I'm not clear about though, is whether there are any disadvantages to a workflow that would see me doing this with 720P media in a sequence, and then outputting to PAL DV through either compressor or using the PAL DV settings through exporting a QT PAL DV movie for my SD work.
For example, are the render times working with 720P media slower than in a PAL DV sequence? What about the file sizes of the media for 720P 25 or 720P 50 - are they much larger than PAL DV? And say I wanted to use in the same project - some footage from a Panasonic GH1 camera which shoots in AVCHD, what would be the best workflow?
Sorry for all the questions and thanks for your help. I've searched the web but can't seem to find the right answers.
    Cheers for now,
    Ant (an HD newbie)

as I understand it, the EX3 can shoot in 720P 25 (Progressive) and 720P 50 (interlaced)
720p25 and 720p50 are both progressive formats, neither are interlaced ... the former is a 25 frame per second format, the latter is a 50 frame per second format. If you are recording 720p with the intention to master to a PAL SD format (50 interlaced fields per second) especially if you intend to intercut it with interlaced footage, then I would recommend shooting 720p50 in order to achieve a more natural interlaced motion in your target.
are the render times working with 720P media slower than in a PAL DV sequence?
Yes. Quite apart from the fact that there are a lot more pixels to be manipulated, there is also the nature of the native XDCAM EX codec ... which is an MPEG2 based codec, and is far more computationally intensive both for decoding and encoding. However working with XDCAM in FCP can be alleviated by setting your render codec to Apple ProRes 422, or indeed by setting your sequence codec to Apple ProRes 422. You could also use a third party capture device such as a Matrox, AJA or Blackmagic card to capture your source footage directly into Apple ProRes 422 or other suitable intermediate codec.
What about the file sizes of the media for 720P 25 or 720P 50 - are they much larger than PAL DV?
Yes. First, 720p25 and 720p50 are the same frame size, being 1280x720. DV PAL is 720x576.
And say I wanted to use in the same project - some footage from a Panasonic GH1 camera which shoots in AVCHD, what would be the best workflow?
Your best bet is to capture all footage into a single intermediate format such as Apple ProRes 422 and then work natively in FCP in that intermediate codec.
    Best

  • Sony EX3 into FCP

I've got a docu to shoot. I'm using the Sony EX3. I'm trying to plan how many HD's I'll need to take with my on the trip. I've misplaced my converter app. What would I be looking at - shooting at full XDCAM HD422 1080p 24fps – in terms of gigawattage per hour?
Wondering also if I should be editing in XDCAM, or converting everything to ProRes? In terms mainly of quality. Looking for the highest quality output at the end.
    B

Its a bit of a confusing post Ben. The EX3 does not shoot XDCAM HD422 1080p 24fps ... at best it shoots full raster XDCAM HD at 4:2:0. Regardless of the frame rate and frame size you choose, the highest quality setting on the EX3 is the "HQ" setting, which records using the 35Mb/s VBR (variable bit rate) codec .... so you are looking at about 4 minutes per gigabyte, although depending on the subject matter the variable bit rate compression will offer some advantage.
Re editing in XDCAM EX/HD, I'e had great success editing natively with that codec on a MacBook Pro, however I would advise setting your interim render codec to ProRes (that's a good combination of taking advantage of the smaller source clip file size / data rate and FCP's camera native codec support for XDCAM EX in the timeline, together with the benefit of the quality and speed of ProRes as a render codec) .... and never master back to the XDCAM EX/HD codec (mastering to ProRes is my choice). Depending on the power of your laptop you might consider the option of editing directly with the XDCAM EX source clips in a ProRes sequence. This is an approach favored by many with more powerful systems and does confer some advantages if and when mastering out to ProRes eg all interim renders can be used for export.
    Hope it helps

  • Has anyone got a Sony EX3 to work in this program?

Has anyone got a Sony EX3 to work in this program?

    yep,
there are lots of ways to do this in logic. straight off the top of my head (so it won't necessarrily be the best way)
set your loops up in individual exs insts
transform midi note to controller 7 with a trasnformer in environment, mapped note to midi channel.
now when you hit the right key, it will turn the note into controller message to open the volume on the exs instrument with the right midi channel.
you will need a 'master' note to turn on your loops in the exs inistruments. obviously this needs to be connected outside of the transform to midi channel.
if you need to more than 16 loops, you can put a transformer before 'notes to controller 7' to split the messages by their key range. sounds complicated but is really easy, no harder in fact than programming VCR.
you will need a master instrument to run all this from in arrange. i would have used a single channel midi instrument in environemnt new>instrument.
my method will work but there maybe a way to set everything up in an exs instance, but i not sure how you would do that so it didn't retrigger rather than open up the volume on the part of the loop you want.
    my way will work though.

  • How do I ingest Sony FS7 footage into Premiere Pro?

Hi!  I was told the Sony FS7 footage can natively ingest into Premiere.  But my footage is crashing every time I try to import.  Any ideas?

Perhaps depends on the camera. I've ,,, in my little experience ... come across some that was. Don't remember which brand/camera was used ... but it was a total stopper. It was the first AVCHD I'd worked with, and I copied (as is not uncommon for the uninitiated) the folders that seemed to have actual video content. Finally got VLC to play it from my computer, but it was only video ... so after a bit of learning over the net, figured out the error of my ways. Sure enough, soon as I added the folder that seemed to have something odd in it but not video ... I had sound. And from the things I've seen around here with the problems of those that have trouble with sound in AVCHD (among other things) ... perhaps I'd just assumed the same thing applied universally.
I've done only a little AVCHD with my GH3, just enough to test out the comments from others that the AVCHD was noisier than the MOV files ... which, yes, they are. Not terribly, but ... MOV is simpler to work with, why shoot a noisier codec?

Sounds like you may need to do a "Clean Uninstall" of Palm Desktop to get things back to normal.

  • Sony EX3 camera FCE4 ...

    Hello,
I am running a MacBook Pro (2,66GHZ, 8GB) and using Final Cut Express 4. However, I am also using a Sony EX3 camera. The driver and all info have been loaded from the CD that comes with the camera into the MacBook.
However, using 'log and transfer' the system says: File Error: 1 file recognised, 0 access denied, 1 unknown.
Any thoughts as to why this should be happening?
Thanks in advance for your help ...

FCE does not come with the XDCAM codec. It doesn't support the format. You'd need FCP to work with this camera.

  • Sony NX5U footage strange (AVCHD)

    First my computer specs:
    Processor - Intel i7 950 @ 3.07 GHz
    Motherboard - ASUS P6TD deluxe
    Memory - 24 GB RAM
    Motherboard cards:
PCIe x4 - Black Magic interface
      PCIe 2.0 x16 - NVIDIA GTX570 #1 (card 1 driving 2 monitors)
PCI 1.0 - open (covered by NVIDIA Card)
PCI 1.0 - SATA 3 card (for 4 additional SATA ports)
       PCIe2.0  x16 - NVIDIA GTX570 #2 (card 2 driving 2 monitors, 4 monitors total)
PCIe2.0 x16 - open (covered by NVIDIA Card)
OS - WIN 7 Pro 64 bit (all the latest updates...Adobe & MS)
Additional - Black Magic Design MultiBridge Pro 2, Sony HVR-M25U VCR, HD monitor on Multibridge Pro HDMI output, 1000 Watt power supply,
2 internal BluRay burners, 1 internal DVD burner, 1 external BluRay burner
    Video drives - SATA 3 & outboard USB 2.0 (9 1/2 TB total space)
    OK Here the story…
I have a new Sony NX5U camcorder, I first shot in in HD 1080/60i, then I used Sony Content Manager to bring footage in, opened Premier 5.5, the footage looked jaggy.
On the next shoot, I changed to SD 480/60i, as the final edit was to be shown from a DVD, used Sony Content Manager to bring footage in, opened Premier 5.5, the footage looked jaggy.
I dragged the clip to the new item (New BIN)...  to set the presets the same as the footage.... the footage still looks jaggy
I even played back the footage on the camera, captured through the HDMI port on my Black Magic MultiBridge Pro, with the same results...
I exported (re-encoded) the footage as a H-264, also as a MS AVI...brought the footage back into Premier.... looked the same..
I set the sequence presets the same as I shoot… but to no avail…. My Sony PD150 footage looks better.
The footage jerks... not smooth... forget trying to pan...
Notice the telephone wires...not smooth... I call the effect "The Jaggies" (I believe the same as aliasing)... What am I doing wrong? See picture below (the video looks much worse than the picture shows)
the telephone lines look like stair steps... (but on the Sony flip out monitor... it looks great... also much smaller monitor, though)

    Try This:
copy footage from SD card to your HDD then use a Blackmagic preset AVCHD for a new sequence (don't use Standard def footage from these cameras). If you have a BM card you should have a TV connected if so what does that picture look like. When you putput via Encore burn a DVD  not a Blu-Ray and that will downscale for you.

  • Sony EX1 footage renders jumpy

    Hi,
This is frustrating me to know end.
I just imported a PPro Mac project into AE Mac with Sony EX1 footage.
When I render, some of the clips jump back and forth (forward and backward) randomly.
It plays fine in PPro and I can RAM Preview a single clip in a separate comp just fine, but a render or RAM Preview jumps.
    Any suggestions?

    I'm creating a work-around for the EX-1 black-dropped-out frames in After Effects (X64 CS3 CineForm):
    1. Edit a 'story board' in Premiere with the EX MP4 raw-files
    2. Convert only the files I need (from all the 150 shot) in the CineForm-HDlink app to .MOV files
//filesize will become a little more, will shift a couple of frames from the MP4-raw, quality the same
//HDlink is a BAD application, because I have to transcode every MP4 file seperately. MXF files are bugging in HDlink
//HDlink does NOT trancode the audio into the new .MOV file! Sucks.
    3. Replace the Premiere 'edit-MP4-raw-files' with the converted .MOV files in After Effects
    4. Re-sync all the audio, 'export audio' from the MP4-raw files in Premiere to AE
    5. Voila! Render without troubles
    I love Quicktime!
-Yeah, it sucks not to work natively-
Any new suggestions would really be appreciated!

  • Sony EX3 with FCE??

Do clips from the new Sony PMW EX3 work with Final Cut Express HD 4.0?

If you converted the material to the Apple Intermediate Codec, how would the workflow look like? What additional steps would be necessary? I'm asking because all I have right now is FCE. I want to see how hard it will be to make the Sony EX3 work with my current FCE program.

  • Sony EX3/slow mo?

I'm trying to decide whether to purchase the Sony EX3. But there's an issue I don't understand: Is it accurate that you cannot use slow-motion if you shoot in 1080 mode? If so, does this also apply with FCP?
Can somebody please recommend a camera(s) of equal quality that do not have this issue and can be used with FCP?

The EX3 can shoot 1080p and 720p, and both formats support over cranking. The 1080p format can only support up to 30fps, and the 720p can support up to 60fps. So if you have decided on 1080 as the format you can only over rank 24fps to 30fps and it only adds 6 more frames.
If you shoot 720 format you can over crank to 60fps, with a 24fps time base that will slow down the motion by 2-1/2 times.
This is a great camera and it will out perform anything in this price range. The EX series cameras have an amazing 3-CMOS 1/2 sensor system that all manufacturers are going with, so don't listen to any rolling shutter BS from this forum, those that raise this as an issue do so only to point people to another manufacturer that is now using the same technology. And don't listen to any Long GOP BS either, as this Long Group of Pictures is being used in the AVCHD codec as well.
The EX3 is an awesome camera and there are solutions to avoid the high cost of SxS cards by using a simple Express card adapter and recording to SDHC cards.
And If you really want to unleash the potential of the EX3 you can now go beyond the limits of the 35Mbps bit rate capabilities and use an external HD-SDI recorder from Convergent Design and soon with an AJA recorder.
The Convergent Design Flash XDR and their Nano Flash recorders support up to 160 Mbps all i-frame Mpeg-2 codec and the overcrank feature will be added by the time the Nano Flash ships in June. Mpeg-2 Long GOP is just as good as AVCHD (Mpeg-4) when you can increase the bit rate.
    Good Luck

  • Quicktime Playback of Sony F3 Footage

    Hi,
I'm running Snow Leopard and have .mov MPEG-2 files from a video shoot with a Sony F3. I'm not editing. That will be done in an Avid, but I'd like to view the footage and have my own copy. How do I get Quicktime to recognize these files. I read something about a Quicktime component but don't understand how to get it or what the right approach is. I downloaded MPEG Streamclip, but the footage does not appear.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

FYI, I tried an XDCAM Browser from Sony and that didn't work either.
I'm currently a Final Cut Express editor so Sony's FCP tool is not for me.
Calibrated does have a FCExpress tool but I'm going to pass on the $99 and just wait for my Avid editor to do the work. This is not what i wanted to do, not ideal. But I'm stuck.
It sure is surprising and seems strange that this is so hard.
    Thanks just the same!
They provide demo versions of their codecs. You could therefore try it for no cost and at least see if it is a possibility for the future.
    See http://www.calibratedsoftware.com/QEXEssentialsDownload.asp
It says it supports the following formats.
    Sony XDCAM EX1 and EX3 MP4 files
    JVCProHD HM 700/HM100 MP4 & MOV files
XDCAM EX MP4 files exported from FCP using Sony XDCAM Transfer
XDCAM EX MOV files created with Sony XDCAM Transfer
