Sounds like Right Hand side fan noise

I've had my powerbook for over year now. I don't have the AppleCare. Ever so often I will hear a noise coming from the right side of my laptop. It doesn't seem hotter than usual. It doesn't happen all the time, but every now and then. I'm a bit concerned as I don't want my system burning up. Any suggestions of what it can be or how iIcan fix the issue?

The fan (fans) will come on once in awhile if the processor load is high. As long as its not too loud, just normal fan noise, what you are describing may be normal. When the fan runs take a look at the Activity Monitor to see what the processor load is.
A couple thing you could try if you are concerned...
Run Apple Hardware test included on the original OS DVD, Disk one. Insert the disk and reboot holding down the Option key. You will be presented with a menu, select "Apple Hardware Test" and follow the instructions. The long version of the test will test the fans, memory etc. When you insert the disk (before you re-boot) there should be an Apple Test Readme file in the finder.
Also... Download one of the temperature sensor utilities. Here's one:

This will give you a look at the temperature of the Battery, Power supply, Processor and hard drive. There's also a widget or two on the Apple web site.

Desktop appearance problem: For no apparent reason my Mac running OSX 10.4.11 imposed a mesh-like pattern over the folders on my desktop and also across the top of the screen and down the right-hand side where I have the dock. How do I remove it?

For no apparent reason my Mac (2 GHz PowerPC G5) running 10.4.11 has put a mesh-like pattern over the folders on my desktop and also a band of the same pattern across the top of the screen and down the right-hand side over the dock. (See screen grabs below.)
It doesn't affect any operations but makes folder names and drop-down menus difficult to read through the pattern.
I'm not aware of changing any settings so suspect I must have clicked on something without noticing. How do I get rid of the overlaid pattern, please?

While importing pictures I cannot change the import settings on the right hand side of the panel. I would like to change the date format.

Apparently I am missing something (stupid). Suggestions are welcome. I'm a novice with Lightroom. Just migrated from Aperture.

I am going to assume that what you meant about changing the date format is that you want to change the way the date is formatted in the renamed file. Is that correct? To do that, you need to tell Lightroom you want to rename your photos during import. On the right hand side panel of the Import dialog is a section on File Renaming. Open that up and you will find a Template drop down box. This is where you can build a file renaming template to fit your needs or you can create a custom one. If you do create your own, make sure to save it as a preset if you want to reuse later. There are all sorts of ways to rename your files with several different date formats to choose from.
Another possibility is the subfolder option for where you are going to store your imported folders. If you chose to Organize By Date, you can also use the Date Format drop down box to choose a date format. This will cause Lightroom to build a folder for each date found in photos you are importing a create a separate folder for each day found. So, if you had three batches of photos from three separate days, three new folders would be built by Lightroom and the photos created on day one would be stored in the day one folder. Same for day two and day three.
Finally, if you don't like the format of the capture date or one of the other dates fields stored in the metadata, you are out of luck. You can change the date but not the format.

Binding collection to right-hand-side of WHERE num_col in (:1) clause?

I'm trying to get all child rows of a set of parent rows. I have in memory the set of parent PKs, and want to select in the child table all rows which have their parent FK among the set of parents. Given Oracle's support for collections like VARRAY, I thought easy, lets just bind a VARRAY of parent PKs as the right-hand-side in a WHERE parent_fk in (:1) clause. However, I somehow cannot make that work :(
I've simplified it to a very simple test table and varray of number:

And I've tried all the following combinations of select, and got the following Oracle errors:

All the examples I see binding varray send it to a PL/SQL procedure that explicitly takes one, and I see none in a WHERE IN clause. Perhaps a PL/SQL solution is the only way to achieve my goal?

Do you have current backups?
Those symptoms could indicate a failing Hard drive. If it dies, all your documents go with it unless you have Backups.
I have had very good luck with physical and battery problem diagnosis at the Genius Bar. Those guys put their hands (and their ears) to these machines, all day every day, and they know immediately what all those sounds mean.

My iPad 1's glass seems to be sinking on the right hand side, any on know how to fix this?

I have had my iPad 1 for about 9 months, I really like it. But the glass in the middle, on the right hand side of the iPad is sinking in and the aluminium is sticking out, should I take it to the apple store? Will they fix it? (my iPad is still under warranty). I have never dropped my iPad, broke it, or any thing else to damage it.

I assume that you have iBooks or GoodReader or Adobe Reader - some app that will open PDF files so my suggestion would be to start with the basic things, restart your iPad, reset it or quit Safari and restart.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
In order to close/quit apps - Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off.
To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
The lock to the right side of the tab indicates that the website is secure - or at least that is what it looks like in Safai on my iPad. Sites with the https in the address have the lock icon in the tab, non secure sites - web pages without the https - do not have the lock icon. I'm not sure if that has any bearing on it - none of the PDF files that I have opened in Safari have the lock icon.
But if you can open the file - it doesn't make sense that it would be locked??? Try the basic suff and see if any of that helps.

How do I force all Tabs to the right hand side, leaving space on the left?

It feels more intuitive to have the first tab against the right hand side and it's easier to find because it always remains in the same position when, eg, closing other tabs. I use TabMixPlus, but can't find the required option. Many thanks.

Firefox and other browsers only temporarily displays the contents. The actual content, settings etc. are stored at the email site. So you may have to change the email settings to display the contacts list on the left. The email support/forum would be helpful. On the other hand, if there is a display problem/error, you can reset Firefox and start afresh.
The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

Does it happen when you reply to an email? If so, it might be that there's content in the original email (like an image or something similar) that overflows the window content, therefore the Mail app, when you hit the border, follows the content below instead of going on a new line. You might wanna try that.

Mac book air, laggy usb mouse, on the right hand side usb port!!! :|

Been using my mac book air on my 21.5 inch monitor via the moshi HDMI adapter..
I also use a logitec M235 mouse(just a normal USB wireless Mouse)..fot the last week i been trying to figure out whats wrong with it, since its laggin soo bad, and pretty much unuseable..it has its phases, it runs fine for 5mins and then goes back to the terrible lag, the computer is unusable, the mouse would just skip like half the screen whenever i tried to move it..its not the system thats lagging since my keyboard functions fine, its only the mouse that choppy and lagging
yesterday i swapped the usb port, and then it works fine..
the problem is only on the right had side USB port, can my USB be malfuncitoning, or is it a software issus, I also tried a different mosue, and the result is the same, terrible lag on the Right hand side USb port, and works fine on the Left hand side..
i tried moving the laptop somewhere else thinking it was some interference, still the same!!
what should I do. I also reset the SMC controller, and its still the same..
its just weired, and annoying. and my warranty expires in 3 weeks!!!
