Specify SQL Server Port During Setup
I am installing ConfigMgr 2012 R2 in an environment that requires remote SQL. In addition, the remote SQL uses a custom port and does not run the SQL Browser service.
Is there a way to specify the SQL Server port during setup? I know I can specify the port for the SQL Service Broker, but I need to specify the port for the SQL Server instance itself.
Any insight/experiences are greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Jeff
You will need to change the port in SQL Server Network Configuration

Setup cannot connect to the specified SQL Server instance
On a clean install domain member (Windows 2012), I am trying to setup System center 2012 VMM:
1. I installed the prerequisites as instructed during the pre-setup phase of the installation then rebooted the server (SQL Server 2012 was installed and services seem to be all started properly and SQL Configuration Manager starts as well).
2. After reboot, logged again with domain admin account and Windows update installed right away SP1 for SQL server 2012. Then I rebooted again.
3. Restarted the installation process and left default values. At the "Database configuration" step, I am leaving everything by default as well and I am getting error: "Setup cannot connect to the specified SQL Server instance. Ensure that
the server name..."
4. Tried different credentials, tried using port 1433 with no effect.
Am I missing something????
Thanks.
BenjilafouineDefinitely be sure to connect with the "ServerName\InstanceName,PortNumber". If you don't reference a port number it will try 1433 and then will connect via a dynamic port number. It is best in my opinion to always specify a specific port for each instance
to listen on in the SQL Server Configuration Manager so that you can open the fewest number of ports in the Windows firewall. -
Cannot connect to the specified SQL Server instance
I am trying to install Microsoft System Center 2012 R2 Virtual Machine Management.
I am getting the following error:
Setup cannot connect to the specified SQL Server instance.
Ensure that the server name, isntance name, and, if speceified, port number are correct. If you are installing VMM remotely, ensure that remote connections are set up correctly, and then try Setup again.
I have installed the
Microsoft® SQL Server® 2008 R2 Command Line Utilities
but have not set up any SQL Server instances.
how should i proceed?
Edit:
The followign fields are configured:
Server Name: The name of the machine i am using
Port: <empty>
Use the following credentials <NOT ticked>
Instance name <empty> (the drop down is empty)
New Database <Ticked> : VirtualManagerDBIs SQL server is properly installed on the system?
Are you able to connect with SQL server instance?
As per the given details looks, only client utilities installed and trying to create the database which needs SQL server.
Make sure you are able to connect with the "ServerName\InstanceName,PortNumber" and hope installing the system as per below article:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg610656.aspx
Hope it help!

SQL Server 2008 Express Setup Issue SKU
Hi,
a configuration file driven setup worked on roughly 30 machines without problems.
However, on one certain machine (which is costumer owned in Saudi Arabia) the installation seems to
be blocked at an early stage. Logfiles reporting something about "SKU", but this makes not clear for me
what the problem is.
The Summary.txt is pasted, below this Details.txt is placed (the bottom part which contains the error portion).
Thanks for help in advance!
Peter

Firewall issue with centralized SQL server - port 52384
Hi,
I have dedicated, centralized MS SQL 2012 server for our internal infrastructure with few instances. There is dedicated named instance SC for SC Family Products running on TCP port 1435. Also Server Browser running on UDP 1434 is enabled. I'm trying to install
SCOM 2012 R2. I got to the step Configure the Operational Database and here, I encountered a problem. I try to connect to my SQL server and put into
Server name and instance name SQL\SC and into SQL Server port 1434 or 1435, it doesn't connect. If I turn off firewall on SQL server, it connects without problems. On SQL server, I already have allowed incoming communication on ports UDP 1434
and also TCP 1433-1436. Than, I found out, that I need to allow in TCP 135 so I did it. It didn't work. Than I allowed TCP 49154-49157 for reporting services - it still didn't work. Last thing I allowed (using Microsoft Network Monitor) was TCP port 52384
and suddenly, it worked .
I know what UDP 1434 and TCP 1433-1436 are for. Also, I understand why I have to open 135 and 49154-49157. But I am pretty confused by the port 52384 - what is it for ? Why it isn't mentioned in documentation ? I am pounding with this problem for a while,
and also, I found out, that my SC VMM is not working, if I do not allow all of these ports - so, probably not only used by SCOM ?
Can anyone explain what's that port for ? Or why it's not enough to open 1434, 1433-1436, 135 and 49154-49157 ?
Thanks
TomasHi,
I didn't install SCOM yet. I am stuck at installation, till I figure out why port 52384 needs to be opened.
1. My SQL Server Configuration Manager is set like this:
Protocols for SC - TCP/IP Enabled
IP2
Active : Yes
Enabled : Yes
IP Address : ipv4 ip address of server
TCP Dynamic Ports : (blank)
TCP Port : 1435
So, that should be ok, right?
2. If I turn off firewall on SQL, everything connects ok - so based on that, I suppose that SCOM server firewall is configured ok . It's issue on SQL.
On SQL server, I have these inbound rules:
COM+ Network Access (DCOM-In) - TCP 135 enabled
HTTP/HTTPS - TCP 80,443 enabled
SCOM Reporting - TCP 49154-49157 enabled
SQL UDP ports - UDP 1433-1437 enabled
SQL TCP ports - TCP 1433-1435 enabled
SCOM 52384 - TCP 52384 enabled <- this is the port I don't understand, why it should be opened
If I disable any of these rules, my connection will not pass. I figured out those ports using Microsoft Network Monitor on SQL server.
3. Those databases do not exist yet. I am stuck at 3th step of Operations Manager Setup - at Configure the operational database.
There are fields Server name and instance name, SQL Server port, Database name, Database size, Data file folder, Log file folder
. First two are writable and the rest is greyed out. If I don't turn off firewall and I don't enable all rules from point 2 on SQL server and than put in the SQL server name with instance (SQL\SC) and port 1434 (or 1435) it gives
me red cross, and rest of the page stays greyed out - so, it's unable to connect. If I turn off firewall, or enable all the rules in previous point (2) I am able to change name of the database, database size, data/log file folder. But if I disable any
of those ports, it stays greyed out - I am concerned about port 52384, why it should be opened? What is it for? Why it isn't mentioned in any documentation? Or am I doing something wrong?
Thanks
Tomas -
Symptom
If you have failed to install SCOM reporting service, you may encounter below error when you reinstall it:
“The specified SQL server instance is not valid”.
(Figure 1)
Figure 1.
Reason
This issue may be caused by multiple reasons, for example the reasons in Figure 1.
However, you may find that SSRS and Report Server website are configured correctly and no SSL or proxy Server is used. In these scenario, you can open the log file under path
to find the root reason:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSRS11.MSSQLSERVER\Reporting Services\LogFiles
Later, you will find the error as below:
ERROR: Throwing Microsoft.ReportingServices.Library.ReportServerDisabledException: , Microsoft.ReportingServices.Library.ReportServerDisabledException:
The report server cannot decrypt the symmetric key that is used to access sensitive or encrypted data in a report server database. You must either restore a backup key or delete all encrypted content. ---> System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException
(0x80090016): Keyset does not exist (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80090016)
at System.Runtime.InteropServices.Marshal.ThrowExceptionForHRInternal(Int32 errorCode, IntPtr errorInfo)
at RSManagedCrypto.RSCrypto.ReencryptSymmetricKey(Byte[] symKeyBlob, Byte[] pPublicKeyBlob)
at Microsoft.ReportingServices.Library.ConnectionManager.<GetEncryptionKey>b__2()
--- End of inner exception stack trace ---;
Solution
According to the error message, you can delete encrypted content by following the steps below:
Open SQL Reporting Services Configuration Manager.
Select “Encryption Keys”.
Click “Delete” to delete all encrypted content. (Figure 2)
Figure 2.
After that, we can install SCOM reporting service again, after successfully install reporting service, we should see the SCOM operation console as below:
Figure 3.
In addition, you may also encounter other errors when installing SCOM reporting service, and the troubleshooting steps may be different. However, we can also check SQL reporting
service logs to find the root reason.
Here are some articles that would be helpful for SCOM reporting service installation and troubleshooting:

I'm afraid you must use a dedicated instance of SQL Server for each site(SCOM/SCCM). Some similar issues were disscussed on this forum:

SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup Very Slow
Hi,
We have a multi-node SQL Server 2008 R2 Failover Cluster.
I've noticed that the SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup is extremely slow and that it appears to only be using 1 of the 128 "CPUs" (i.e. in Task Manager).
We use this for creating new cluster groups and alike.
Is this tool only single threaded and is there a way to increase the performance? Our CPUs are 2.something GHz, we have 512GB of RAM and fast local disks.
ThanksHello,
What happen if you slipstream the SQL Server 2008 R2 with the latest SQL Server 2008 R2 service pack? Maybe SQL Server setup does better after the slipstream process.
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/petersad/archive/2011/07/13/how-to-slipstream-sql-server-2008-r2-and-a-sql-server-2008-r2-service-pack-1-sp1.aspx
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd638062(v=sql.105).aspx (Slipstream a SQL Server 2008 R2
Update)
Hope this helps.

How to sql server port number to scom inventory
can some one help me how to add sql server port number to scom inventory
To open a port in the Windows firewall for TCP access
On the
Start menu, click Run, type WF.msc, and then click
OK.
In the
Windows Firewall with Advanced Security, in the left pane, right-click
Inbound Rules, and then click New Rule in the action pane (upper right corner).
In the Rule Type dialog box, select
Port, and then click Next.
In the Protocol and Ports dialog box, select
TCP. Select Specific local ports, and then type the port number of the instance of the Database Engine, In my case we are using the default which is
1433. Click Next.
In the Action dialog box, select
Allow the connection, and then click Next.
In the Profile dialog box, I am going to Leave
Domain turned on and turn private and public off. Then click
Next.
In the Name dialog box, type "Allow SQL 1433 Inbound” and for a description I am putting in the same. Then click
Finish.

SQL Server Express 2008 Setup Error : Exit code -2147467259.
Hello.
I have been trying to install SQL Express 2008, 3 different editions on a Windows 2008 Standard Server. All of the installers failed just after the install file had finished unpacking itself in a temp folder. No errors or logs were found.
.Net3.5sp1, Windows Installer 4.5 and PowerShell 1.0 were all installed.
I was only able to find a log file when I used the SqlExpressWrapper.exe to drive the installation.
The error displayed from the wapper is : An error occurred during installation of SQL Server 2008 Express. Installation failed with exit code -2147467259
thank you for your help.

SCOM Reporting Server Installation Give Error The specified SQL Server instance is not valid
Hi All,
I am trying to install SCOM 2012 SP1 Reporting Server on a Windows Server 2012 running SQL Server 2012 SP1. The SQL Server also host instance for SCCM 2012 SP1 named SCCM, and not in clustered environment.
For SCOM 2012 SP1, I choose SQL instance named SCOM. At first, I successfully installed SCCM 2012 SP1 Reporting Services. I have SSRS configured to use port 80 for both SCCM and SCOM instance, and not using SSL, with IP Address settings: All assigned. SQL
Server Agent services on both instances are configured to started automatically. I could access http://scsqlserver/reports_SCCM and http://scsqlserver/reporserver_SCCM, but could not for http://scsqlserver/reports_SCOM and http://scsqlserver/reporserver_SCOM.
On OpsMgrSetupWizard.log give error
[12:24:53]: Error:
:CheckHttpAddressResponse failed: Threw Exception.Type: System.Net.WebException, Exception Error Code: 0x80131509, Exception.Message: The remote server returned an error: (500) Internal Server Error.
[12:24:53]: Error:
:StackTrace: at System.Net.HttpWebRequest.GetResponse()
at Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.OperationsManager.Setup.ReportingComponent.CheckHttpResponseFromSRSUrl(String httpSite)
I may continue Reporting Server installation that give no error mentioned above, if I choose SSRS instance named SCCM, but it is not supported for both SCCM and SCOM 2012 using same SSRS instance. Personal certificate for ConfigMgr SQL Server Authentication
on SQL Server has been exported and deleted. Restarting SQL Server also has been done, but no luck.
Many thanks for your help.Hello,
I'm afraid you must use a dedicated instance of SQL Server for each site(SCOM/SCCM). Some similar issues were disscussed on this forum:

SMS_HIERARCHY_MANAGER reports (Message ID=3353):
"Hierarchy Monitoring detected that the ConfigMgr SQL Server <fqdn> ports 1433,4022, are not active on Firewall
exception."
This is a fresh SCCM 2012 environment with no firewall active. SQL is installed on the same server as SCCM 2012. Is there a way to fix this without enabling the firewall?Check this out
Issue:
ConfigMgr logs the error even though Windows Firewall is disabled or it is enabled and all exceptions are added to SQL Server(s).
Environment: I had an environment consist of a two node SQL Cluster hosting ConfigMgr database and a separate ConfigMgr primary site server
Resolution:
Windows firewall service must be started on both SQL nodes and ConfigMgr itself . As soon as the service is started exceptions for TCP 1433 and 4022 must be added to SQL nodes firewall.
After that the firewall profiles can be disabled using:
netsh advf set allp state off
This is true but if you disable the firewall even thought you have opened the Firewall port then disabled the firewall. The status message will continue to be generated and your site server will still be in an error state.
Notice that I said "disabled" and not "turn off".

Sql server 2008 r2 setup support rules missing cluster node
i have error on install sql r2 there are problems in cluster node its failed on windows 8
Hi ,
Before you install SQL Server on a computer that is running Windows 8, about Microsoft SQL Server 2008 , you must apply and install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 or a later after the initial setup is complete. To install a SQL Server failover
cluster, you must create and configure a failover cluster instance by running SQL Server setup. For more information, see:
Installing a SQL Server 2008 R2 Failover Cluster: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms179410(v=sql.105).aspx
In addition, as other post, could you please help us to collect the detailed error message and the following error log? It is very useful for our research.
