Speed Up Boot Process
My bootchart:
http://imgur.com/JlOu8
When I look at my bootchart there is around 5 to 8 seconds of inactivity before modules start to load.
Does anyone what what scsi eh0 -5 on my bootchart represent?
This may be the 6 SATA ports on my GA-P55A-UD3.
So far I have set the hooks in mkinitcpio.conf to:
--snip--
HOOKS="base udev autodetect sata filesystems"
and made a new kernel image.
Have also set daemons in/etc/rc.conf
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng dbus network @netfs @crond)
commented out unused terminals and read the following wiki page
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Im … erformance
Anything else I can try?
Thanks in advance.

How to speed up booting process
I was lucky the way I could try out different ways of instaling Solaris 10 together with XP Pro. However same thing always happend. I do not know why but Solaris booting manager is slow in my opinion. I can't find out how to speed up this process. Can somebody give some advice???
Hey, I am new to solaris, but I think maybe you should try installing solaris alone, with out XP Pro on the machine at all. I also see what you mean about the long system loading. Think of it this way, Unix and Windows are different, Unix has a more stability, and better config options than windows, so load time is a small price to pay. I would say My node take about 3 minutes to login from the time i turn the power on. Windows booted the same computer in 1 minute 40 seconds. BUT, the windows machine started to lagg after a week or so, I've been able to run my solaris for 3 weeks with out shutdown. now there is 1 more problem, how am i going to pay my electricity bill?

Hey guys,
I am new to the whole Arch Linux community and I have been using Arch for well over 3 months now and I can say I am loving it over Ubuntu! I just had a question about my boot speeds that I was hoping someone could solve.
On Lucid Lynx I used to be able to get my system booted up in around 20 seconds but on Arch it is taking me twice that, around 43 seconds according to Bootchart. I have tried many of the suggestions in this wiki article https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Im … erformance and this one https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ma … erformance but to no avail.
I hope that someone can check out my bootchart out and tell me where to begin tinkering with to bring down my boot time.
BOOTCHART:
Thanks for your time!So I managed to get the at-spi2 packages to uninstall without pulling down my entire GNOME system. I am also trying out Qingy as a login manager instead of GDM (screw the ACPI calls for now, I can fix those when I come to that bridge).
I didn't think systemd was that easy... No set up required at all?
I thought that I would have to enable the services I required at boot.
And yes, I did set up nouveau like on the wiki and I am actually trying to see if having it start up earlier will make much of a difference.
Wish me luck. Will be rebooting now!
EDIT: Ok so nouveau died on me when starting it earlier in the boot process and so I configured it back to the way it used to start. Also, I tried the nvidia binaries from the repos and that takes longer to boot up the system, if not the same as now
EDIT2: Qingy was also being a bitch and so I replaced it with SLiM and after doing all of this I am now booting at a blazing speed of... 1min and 04secs!! I don't know why the hell it is regressing!
Thanks for all the help Wey!

How to speed up boot process on old laptop?
I have an old laptop which is being used as offline info-center (kiosk mode), i.e. if someone needs information the laptop is being switched on and off. It's an old HP OmniBook XE3L Laptop with a Celeron 746 MHz, 128 MB Ram, 10 GB HD and a S3 Savage/IX-MV Graphics card.
First I used Mandriva 2007, and the total boot time from switching on the computer until the webpage showed up on Firefox (using KDE) was 1:50 (min:sec). Arch 0.8 with the same configuration boots in 1:25, and with IceWm and Opera it boots in 1:10. The startup is automatic, no passwords are needed.
Is there a way to further shorten the boot time? Especially as my laptop 'hangs' approx. 17 seconds on "Loading UDev events".Did you disable the services you don't need?
Also try backgrounding some services. This is my daemons array for example:
DAEMONS=(@syslog-ng @network @cpufreqd portmap @fam @hal @avahi-daemon !iptables @alsa !hplip !cups @crond @openntpd)
My laptop boots in 30s tops - it's a Turion, but with a 4200 RPM HD - damn you Fujitsu-Siemens!
I still have the Uevents that keep it up, so... -
Tty1-6 freeze in the middle of the boot process, tty7 and X works fine
I'm running Arch+KDE (and some alternative like xmonad as wm). I have the following strange problem:
Booting works fine, KDM starts, I can login, everythings works. However, although I can change to tty1-6 via ctrl+alt+f1...6 they are frozen in the middle of the boot process, here's exactly what I see after switching to another tty:

The curious thing is that everything works perfect in KDE, resp. tty7 ?!?what ever upgrade the software downloaded is the problem
You didn't mention this in your first post. Any idea what it was? Backups?
Besides that, this may be a fault in the video card, driver, or a screen fault.
Courtesy of BDAqua (if possible):
Take a screen shot & view that in Preview, move the Preview window around, if you see double lines it's a Video card/VRAM problem, if the lines do not move moving the pic around then it's the LCD or cable. -
Cisco Aironet 1262N stuck during boot process
I am banging my head against the wall trying to figure out why my AIR-AP1262N-A-K9 will not boot all the way. It will get all the way to initiating the interfaces and stop. I can never get to controlling the cli. This is my first time with a cisco ap but from everything that I read it seamed very easy.
This unit from what I understand will work all on its own with no controller. Hence it is called a "standalone" model. Yet it seems to be looking for something to finish during the boot. Below is the out put during boot. The last line is where it stops.
If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it.

UCS - IPMI - vCenter - How to speed up boot?
I have enabled IPMI on the UCS so that vCenter can power down/up the blades based on performance needs.
It works great. The blades get powered off when the utilization is low and then powered on when the utiltization increases.
My only issue is the time it takes for the blades to boot ESXi 4.0 (around 7 minutes). The time seems mostly to be prior to the actual bootingof ESXI.
The only two boot options I have enabled for my blades is CDROM and Harddrive.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to speed up the boot process?
Or is there a way for the blade to go into standby instead of actually powering off?
KrisWatch out for the IPMI MAC address issue, https://supportforums.cisco.com/docs/DOC-8582, I think Aptos+ release fixes this real soon now...

Applying Software Installation Policy Is Taking Long Time During Boot Process
1 of my servers is having slow boot up issue. I have enabled user environment debugging and the gpsvc.log file has been generated. I have also used the Windows Performance Analyzer to capture logs and results came back that the GP Client is taking a long
time in the boot process. So, I reckoned the slow boot is due to GPO but I am not sure where to look from this log file.
I have only paste part of the gpsvc.log file here due to limitation in the number of characters allowed to be posted. Would appreciate some good advise on this issue that I am facing.

Downloading an app on to my iPad mini takes 15 minutes or more just for one app is there a way to speed up the process?
Maybe your internet is very slow.
Try reset iPad
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
Note: Data will not be affected. -
There is always a blue screen appears after the Apple logo during the booting process. And then everything is back to normal. What is this thing? Is there something wrong with my screen or something?
Nah - that's just the normal boot process.
Clinton -
My MacBookPro (mid 2012) will not complete the boot process. Yosemite's progress widget gets about 1/3 to 1/2 way across when the logo disappears and the screen goes all white for 10-15 secs, then the machine shuts down and restarts. This sequence will repeat seemingly forever unless I shut it down manually.
I upgraded to Yosemite from Mountain Lion a couple months ago, skipping Maverick completely, and I've done any associated updates that Apple told me about. I don't recall which version of Yosemite I have, but I'm sure it is the "latest and greatest".
I've tried re-starting in Safe Mode / Safe Boot and that does the same thing as described above except without the endless restarts. Instead of restarting at some point, SafeBoot proceeds to the white screen and then it hangs until I restart it manually. (I've waited as long os 20-30 minutes with no response).
When I tried the option-command-p-r key combo I never get any chimes or other noises besides the original 1 time boot sound that you would expect to get when starting up a macbook pro.
I was using the mac quite normally (meaning I was doing work I normally do on it and there was no indication of anything wrong) immediately prior to this happening.
The machine is BootCamp(ed) with Windows 8.1 which I use from a VMWare virtual machine instead of natively so that I can have both OSes running at the same time. I also think this is unrelated to my problem. I have been using this setup for more than 2 years.
My upgrade to Yosemite was uneventful and I thought it went well and was very smooth. I don't want to lead attention away from Yosemite, but at this point my problem does not seem related to the upgrade.
Any help is appreciated.Install or Reinstall OS X from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless. -
CD drive not recognized & Very slow boot process.
(I posted this in the newbie forum, but got no answer, so I give it another go)
Hi all,
After a few years alternating between gentoo and debian, feeling they were ok, but not exactly what I wanted, I found Arch, and now I am happy. It feels just right. I am still very new, but I am already quite sure I'll settle here.
But happyness and warm feelings asides, I have a 2 problems I'd like to get some help about.
problem 1: my CD drive is not recognized. my hard drive and its partitions show up correctly, but I don't get a cd drive.
problem 2: On the boot process, a lot of time (2 minutes or so) is spend scanning the ATA bus. relevant messages are as follow (plus a few lines before and after just to give context)

problem 2 and 3 are probably related, and linked to the new pata system in the kernel, but I don't really know anything about it, and my understanding of the mkinitcpio is very very limited. here is mine anyway, comments stripped.
Code:
MODULES="pata_ali"
BINARIES=""
FILES=""
HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata usbinput keymap filesystems"
I had it with
Code:
MODULES="pata_ali ata_generic"
and with scsi in the HOOKS as the result of the install, but the behavior was exactly the same.
Oh, and the machine I am using is a 4 year old laptop. Nothing in there is scsi or sata.
I hope anyone can help me with those.
ThanksHi, I'm a "newbie" too. Coming from Gentoo/Debian. Installed Arch this week and I think it could be just the distro I have been looking for.
I too had the same problem and think it's related to the pata modules. ¿Did you have to use the legacy-ide option when installing from the CD? I'm using old hardware (4 year old laptop) and had the same symptoms you are describing. I exchanged pata with ide in mkinitcpio.conf. My MODULES and HOOKS looks like this:
MODULES="ide_disk ata_generic"
HOOKS="base udev autodetect ide keymap filesystems" (deleted scsi and sata also because I don't think I need them).
Then run mkinitcpio.
I also had to change my device names in /etc/fstab from:
/dev/sda2 / ext3 defaults 0 1
/dev/sda5 swap swap defaults 0 0
to:
/dev/hda2 / ext3 defaults 0 1
/dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0
And finally /boot/grub/menu.lst from:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda2 ro
to
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/hda2 ro
¿Any experienced user can confirm that I'm doing the right thing? I didn't find documentation in the wiki for old systems. Only the mention of an ide-legacy option.
Hope it helps.

I have found that my Mac Book Pro late 2011 15 inch is slower than I expected with certain downloads, or working with iPhoto than expected compared to my previous Windows 7 PC. Would adding RAM be of any value in speeding up the process?

I just created a slideshow dvd in imovie, and when I hit finalize it said that it would take 7 hours to finalize. I've only had my macbook pro for 6 months, and this is the first imovie I've done...is this normal? If not how can I speed up this process? Thanks in advance for all of your help!
Hi
Time needed can depend on several things.
• less than 5 GB free space on Start-up (Mac OS) hard disk = Redicolous long times AND a DVD that most probably will not work OK
Medicine - I never go under 25GB free space
• Use of strange file formats into iDVD - can force it to de-code first then re-encode - this can take long long times
I use
Video - StreamingDV as from miniDV tape Cameras - or QuickTime Movies Converted to StreamingDV
Audio - .aiff 16-bit 48 kHz - (no .mp3, .wma etc)
• Use of old Mac - My G4 600MHz took about 24 hour per hour movie. my dG5 - about 2 hours per hour (I use Pro Quality encoding)
• Pro Quality encoding - takes about x2 to process a movie

Hi ,
On my laptop I have Solaris 8 and Win2000.
During booting it displays a sceen where i can choose the partion from where i want to boot ( Win or Solaris). Currently, it defaults to Solaris ( after a 10 sec timeout). Is there any way to change the default boot partition from Solaris to Win?
Moreover, my understanding is that this program is the 'bootblk' program. Is the source code of this program publicly available? if yes where can i find it?
Thanks
TasosHello boopathi subramaniam,
