Speed up clip and matte

hi
what is the practice for speeding up a clip down the tree after Ive spent ages rotoing?
I would normally use the retime in the file in - but in this case have had to do loads of roto - and now think the elements are gonna need speeding up by about 50 - 100 % more - but dont want to ruin all the roto timing.
I suppose i could render out the footage with the alpha then reimport - but then will lose any fine control later - and dont want to do that.
I presume it is a timex expression...? had alook in the manual but cant understand it.
Have been using Nuke lately and it has arealy nifty retime node you can drop anywhere in the tree... hping there something similar in my god old shake.

Just to be clear: You'll need to change the speed setting in FileIn by the
same amount as in Rotoshape.
Note that, if you change the speed setting in FileIn back to 1 or "none",
it will go back to the original speed. (It’s like Final Cut)
The speed adjustment of RotoShape, however, is cumulative.
If you crank it up by a factor of 4, you'll need to crank it down by 0.25
in order get back to original speed.

  • How can I animate colour changes of clips and mattes in fcpx

Can Anyone help me in getting to grips with ficpx.
I want to vary (animate) the colour of titles and mattes over their time periods. Also, i need to correct the variations of colour temperature (castes) which my panasonic camcorder produces sometimes. I notice that there is no animation icon in the inspector panel for colour changes and I am not able to insert animation points on the timeline animation strips above the assets. Any help would be appreciated. Lorenzo F.

Color correction and color masks cannot be animated in FCP. You'd have to do this in Motion or some other app. DaVinci Resolve Lite is free.

  • Best way to organise multiple large clips and hundreds of subclips

    Situation
I have the task of producing a suite of short 2 minute videos comprising highlights of several hours of footage in multiple large files.
I want to extract and manage the highlights in a non-destructive way and organise them according to subject matter.
I would then use these in several projects to create the highlights videos required.
I am using Adobe CC, so it's CS6.
My approach so far is to:
    1. Import all the footage into a single project as individual large clips
    2. Scrub through each clip, set in/outs and extract to subclip, store in subject matter bin
    My questions:
    1.  if I go back to the original footage and edit it, it doesn't seem to flow through to the subclips. How do I make the subclips inherit the attributes of their parent? (e.g. could be sound, colour, etc)
    2. how do I access these highlights bins from another project?
    3. is this the best way to handle my situation?
    Thanks for your input.
    Ric

I suppose applying the effects to the source clip and rendering out a new source file is one way of doing it.  Just be very careful that you don't compress the output.  And, of course, it will double the amount of hard drive space.  I'd still make all the sub-clips first and use the "paste attributes" command.  I think you can even lasso a whole bunch of clips and paste attributes to all of them at once (they have to be in the timeline, though - not the project panel).
It shouldn't take an awful lot of hard drive space to duplicate projects.  Just duplicate the "prproj" file, not the whole projects folder (and certainly not the source material).
Here's a screen shot of my set-up for a complicated, 5-camera shoot of a play:
The original project (syncing all the cameras up) is 1 MB, each successive archive gets a little bigger but the current project is only 3.8 MB.  I would imagine if you are deleting bins and sequences for the mini-projects, the prproj file would actually get smaller than the original master.
Okay.. so here's the mantra about non-tape based video... First you back up the card (including the complete folder structure) onto an archive drive.  Next you copy this folder onto an external or RAID or other "real" archive drive.  Then (and only then) do you start editing the material!
Ideally, you need at least three, physically separate harddrives (not partitions) in an editing station (this is true Windows or Mac).  One drive for the operating system and applications only (no media or projects or anything!).  One for working projects (each project in its own folder) where everything except the source video is stored.  And finally one for the source video.  On my system my OS drive is Tardis ('cuz I'm a geek!).  I have a Projects drive for projects (duh!) a Scratch drive for working video files and an Archive for "finished" projects waiting delivery and back-back-ups of my SD cards.

How Can I set my speed of clip to 0%?
    I can't do that. A minimum value is: 1.00

So I HAVE TO do this in that specific way? I can't normally set a "0%" value of speed curve?

What a rubbish did you say? I am in Time remapping freeze menu and IN THIS MENU we can't set a value to 0%. A value: 1.00% is a minimum.
You have to miss a screen what I paste before, so specially for you (there is even a red box):

Best would be cutting a matte in Photoshop, or as Mr. Grenadier suggests, using Motion or After Effects - but here is a way to do it staying within FCP - see if this helps:

  • Best way to change speed of clips

Hey, I want to change speed of clips, both faster and slower in one clip. What is the best way to do that preserving the quality? I am still learning FCP so my apologies, and I had a hard time finding anything on here through search.

    Jerry's right...
    Take a look at this:

Two frames each of FCP and Shake at 50%. Use your arrow keys to go frame by frame. First frame is normal, second is interpolated. Look at the background!!
Creative cow should have the whole tutorial online soon... I'll post back with the link when they do.
Also, for time remap -- shake's got that under control too... but for now, look at this:

  • Why are subsequent clips either above or below the main clip and blurred?

I am new to iMovie 10.
I have imported three clips into iMovie.  I selected one and dragged it into the timeline area.  I selected the second and dragged it into the timeline area that followed the first clip.  Now, when I select the third and drag it into the timeline area, for some reason it rests above the first and second clips and no matter how I position it, I can't get it to be inline.  It's either above or below.  Also, it doesn't reveal the entire third clip.  It just blurs it at the bottom and I can't see the waveform.  Why is this and how do I place my clip all in one line?

    Can anyone help on this?

  • Merged clips and modified audio channels bug/issue

My problem is that if I create a merged clip and modify it's audio channels Premiere (both CC and CC2014) does not respect the modification under specific circumstances. These circumstances are: if I use keyboard shortcuts or the source window buttons for overwrite/insert to cut the merged clip into a timeline. However, if I drag & drop the clip from the source window or from a bin into the timeline Premiere will respect the audio channels set through modify audio channels.
Here are steps needed to create my problem. You will need a video clip and an audio clip with at least two channels to reproduce this.
    1. Create a merged clip from the video and audio. Does not matter if you have "Remove audio from AV clip" enabled or not.
    2. Right click on the merged clip in the bin and select Modify -> Audio Channels.
    3. Set the merged clip's audio channels to Number of Audio Tracks: 1, Channel Format: Mono. Set the source channel for Audio 1 to anything except Channel 1. Click OK.
    4. Make sure you have the merged clip open in the source monitor. Use keyboard shortcuts (. or ,) or the insert/overwrite buttons in the source monitor to cut the clip into a sequence.
    5. The merged clip in the sequence will use channel 1 for audio, even though it has been set to use another channel.
    6. Now try drag & dropping the merged clip from either the source monitor or from a bin into the sequence. It will now use the audio channel that has been set through modify audio channels.
My workaround is to use drag & drop for now for affected clips, but in the long run this is a pain in the backside.
My question is if this is something that affects other users as well. And while I'm waiting for a fix, if anyone has any suggestions on how to get modified audio channels to work properly, I will gladly listen.
I have filed a bug report for this. I have reproduced this on multiple Windows 7 machines with Premiere Pro CC and on two Macs with both CC and CC 2014.
EDIT to add: I have been in discussion with Rameez from Adobe about this through the support chat and have been told that this is working as intended. He suggested I post a thread about it to see how other editors feel about the functionality. I personally feel that the way it works now makes no sense at all. If others feel the same way, maybe this issue can be fixed in a future update. So please make your voice heard.
EDIT to add: In most usage this might not be an issue at all. But if for example you have external audio on multiple channels and to make sure you have a clean timeline, you wish to remove extra tracks from your merged clips and those extra tracks happen to be any track before the last one(s), you will find that editing the merged clip in in any other way than drag & dropping it in the sequence will result in you losing those last tracks instead of any tracks in the middle that you have disable through modify audio channels. I would think that the audio channel modifications should work no matter what way you cut the merged clip in.

Going to try, but here is my workflow and have not encountered any problems until this last P/U days footage.  I've been doing things this way because I found having all files in the project was causing it to crash constantly when I was working.  I have a new I7' processor IMac with 24 gigs of RAM.  And since Premiere does not allow you to have multiple projects open at the same time (Wish this would change.  Avid and FCP both allowed multiple projects) I have to do things this way.
    Pre-workflow Project File
Label all Video and Audio files to match Scene #'/Takes
Set in points on all video and audio to reflect slate
    Merge Clips
    Working Project File
Import only Merged Clips into Project.  Either via import or copy/paste
Now I've done this workflow from just about the very beginning.  Deleting all of the original source video and all audio clips from my working project so only my bins containing my merged clips remain.  Have had no problems and edit has been smooth.  Did a pickup day last week, followed same steps as I've done in the past, imported the merged clips into my working project and the clips have the audio set to none by default.  Now once I go into the sequence I can manually set it and it's there but I cannot play audio in the source monitor which is how I edit, there's no reason I should have to go back to the crappy FCP way of editing doing the copy and paste from a sequence.

  • Can't change speed on clips in timeline - get error message

In Final Cut Pro 5.1.2, when I try to change the speed of clips in the timeline I get the error message "Unable to complete command. A conflict occurred during a trim operation." I have changed the speed of many clips in this project previously, but it suddenly won't do it now. I have searched for a solution but can't seem to find it. Any help would be appreciated.
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You could go next door and search the forum there. Or you could search for the answer here. It comes up pretty often.
When you change the speed of a clip it changes the duration of the clip, which ripples the sequence. That changes its duration. Sometimes changing the duration/clip speed will move things in the timeline. Sometimes when you try to move things in the timeline, overlapping clips or other things bump into each and prevent the sequence from rippling. This is most common cause for the error message you're seeing.

  • How to speed up clips

hi just wondering if you could tell me how to alter the speed of clips
    e.g
i would like to create a clip with something moving quite fast and then go back to normal speed in the next clip
    please could anyone help me?
    cheers

    Hi g
In iMovie'08 - Don't think it is possibly.
If Your material is on a miniDV tape. Use iMovie HD 6
    • If You hade it previuos iLife08 then You find it in Aplications/iMovie previous versions folder.
    • If not - Download it from Apple. As iLife owner You are entitled to do this.
Next see that it is updated to v. 6.0.4 (has to)
Here You can speed up or down Your clips.
iMovie'08 should have another name - it's not for more advanced editings and
DVD disks as goal. It's primary for publiching on the net.

  • Text Overlay Speeding up Clip

I have Final Cut Pro 6.0.6
Out of nowhere, after one editing project (which was a hassle in HD, but worked begrudgingly) I started a new, standard project (non-HD). when I went to overlay some text, the clip below sped up. Just the video, the audio was fine. the clip didn't shorten, just sped up within itself and then dropped frames message box came up. I left the text on, thinking it was a playback issue. after it was exported (as both iphone.m4v file and a .mov file), the clip stayed sped up.
I even exported the project without text, and attempted to import it and then lay text over the final project. it sped up again! what is causing this??
I already dumped prefs, reset, etc. I ended up having to import the project into imovie and do the text in there--which worked fine. I don't want to do that every time, what is this text issue!?

I did a search all across the internet and all I kept coming up with was "how to speed up clips" or "how to put text on your project". nothing like this. the last thing I want to do is sign up for a forum and post things.
well, when I drag a clip into the timeline to edit, FCP automatically matches to the clips settings. or, that's what it's telling me it's doing. I've edited tons of m4v files over the past few months and never came across this issue before, why would it happen now to two separate projects?
from what I understand, my settings are on DV NTSC and the file I'm editing is a Mp4 file format, which I have done plenty of times before. this is--again--only when I overlay text above any part of the clip.

  • HT1583 When I render my project in IDVD, video and audio runs properly, but when I burn it in professional quality and burning is finished there was no audio on the last two chapters, one audio is attached to the clip and the other one is from itunes, pls

Hi, please help me When I render my project in IDVD, video and audio runs properly, but when I burn it in professional quality and burning is finished there was no audio on the last two chapters, one audio is attached to the clip and the other one is from itunes, pls help

    Hi
    My first two thoughts
    • Shared to Media Browser - BUT as Large or HD - try Medium !
    • audio from iTunes - use to go silent
    - in iTunes
    - Create a new PlayList with needed audio
    - BURN this as a standard Audio-CD (.aiff) - NOT .mp3
    - use the files on this CD in Your Movie project - I ALWAYS DO - and only use .aiff ever - never .mp3'
    My notes on this:
    No audio on DVD disc.
    Most common origin.
    1. Imported audio from iTunes.
    • In iTunes copy out as an Audio-CD .aiff (Same as played on standard Stereo CD - no .mp3)
    • Use this in Your movie project
    2. Low - Free Space on Start-up/Boot/Internal/Mac OS Hard disk makes it hard for iMovie to work as intended.
Down to 1.3 GB and it doesn’t work - especially audio don’t migrate over to Media Browser
    (iM’08 & 09)
    3. Material in iMovie’08 & 09 - Shared to Media Browser and here selected as Large
large.m4v. It silenced out this project in iDVD. By making a slight alteration - provoking it to ask for a new Share/Publish to Media Browser and here selecting 640x480 - and audio was back when a new iDVD project was created including this movie.
    Minuscular - - 176x144
    Mobile - - - - - 480x360
    Medium - - - - 640x480
    Large - - - - - - 720x540    960x540
    HD - - - - - - - - 1280x720
    4. Strange audio formats like .mp3, .avi etc.
    • Change them to .aiff. Use an audio editor like Audacity (free)
    5. Main audio is set to off in System Preferences - Does this by it self - Don’t know why
    Cheque Audio-Out resp. Audio-In
    6. Ed Hanna
Had the same problem; some Googling around gave me a kludgy, but effective fix
Downgrade Perian from recent versions back to version 1.0.
That worked for me, and so far I haven't encountered any deficiencies — except it takes more advanced versions of Perian to enable QuickTime to handle subtitles in .srt format — that I have noticed.
    7. GarageBand fix.
In this set audio to 44.1 kHz (Klaus1 suggestion)
(if this don’t work try 48 kHz - me guessing)
    Before burning the DVD.
    • Do a DiskImage (File menu and down)
    • Double click on the .img file
    • Test it with Apple DVD-player
If it’s OK then make Your DVD.
Burn at x1 speed.... (or x4)
    • In iDVD 08 - or - 09
    • Burn from DiskImage with Apple’s Disk Utilities application
    • OR burn with Roxio Toast™ if You got it

  • IMovie '09 v 8.06 - Changing video speeds on clips messes up the video clip

I have ALWAYS had this problem with iMovie.. Randomly it will work, but usually, when I'm trying to put some slow-motion segments in my movie, they jump seemingly randomly between parts of the source clip. In otherwords, if I have a 60 second clip, and I split it at 20 seconds, and 25 seconds, and then slow the 5 second middle part down to 50% using the slider (so that 5 seconds of video is now 10 seconds long), that 10 seconds jumps around between seemingly random sections from my video. If I change the speed back to 100%, the clip goes back to normal. This is REALLY frustrating... Has anyone seen that??

  • Compressor encoded speed change clip with echo as motorboat sound

Took me two days to troubleshoot, through trial and error and process of elimination, why Compressor encoded an audio clip that had been speed changed and echo applied to it -- as rapid MOTORBOAT sound! Project is a 5.1 mix. Since STP3 won’t accept speed change clips, after I completed mix in STP I placed speed changed clips on FCP timeline below the exported STP 5.1 mix with the FCP audio tracks for that clip assigned to channels 1 & 2 for the fronts and channels 5 & 6 for the rears. The clip on 5 & 6 was duplicated and identical in every way to the clip on channels 1 & 2. Only the dupe clip on 5 & 6 did Compressor encode as motorboat. The identical clip on 1 & 2 encoded correctly. Both clips were set to play at same time since I wanted the effect to be on fronts and rears simultaneously. I could not get the motorboat sound to play back from either FCP timeline or Compressor preview window. Only after encode and burn to DVD did it show up. Why would Compressor introduce such artifacts on one of the clips and not both – if it’s going to do it at all – which it shouldn’t? Any ideas? I have other such effects throughout the project where I duped a speed changed clip with an effect applied to it and set it to play on fronts and rears simultaneously and Compressor encoded those correctly.

Well, it's a little late, but this is one of the reasons to have your startup drive cloned so you can restore it to a working state if an update, upgrade or install sends things south.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2494
Have you tried resetting your fcp preferences
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2491
If this doesn't fix the problem, you could try sending the shot to motion.  You could aslo try changing the speed in the motion tab of the viewer.

  • Changing Speed of clip in timeline in a specific wqay

I realize there are a variety of ways of affecting
a change to the speed of a clip already in the timeline,
but I'm trying to figure out how to do it in one very specific way:
If I have 3 clips (A,B,C) and I want to change the speed
of B so that it is slower, but not expand the clip from
it's original length (meaning it will still occupy the
same spot, duration and length in the timeline), is there a way of accomplishing that just by punching a specific figure
in somewhere (i.e. make it move at 50%).
I know about fit-to-fill, time remap, right clicking a clip
and changing speed. However, I don't want the clip to
expand past it's spot in the timeline, just play slower in the spot it occupies.
The closest I've come is going into the time remap tool and lowering the end keyframe so it moves slower, but this is
imprecise. I want to be able to punch in 50%, or 60% somewhere and have it take, without expanding. The time remap tool won't let me punch in 50%, although that indicator moves when I drop the ending keyframe down a little.
Can what I'm describing be done, and if so, how? Thanks.

Match frame back to the original media. Slow it down, then cut it back in.
You cannot slow down the clip in the timeline without it expanding. You are telling FCP to take the existing clip and make it longer...of course it will expand in size. It doesn't know that you don't want it to do that. It assumes (rightly so) that you want the clip, with the IN and OUT points you designated, to be slower. Keeping it in the same spot on the timeline means cutting off the head or tail of the clip...losing points you told FCP you wanted.
Simple to just load the clip into the viewer, slow it down to the speed you want, then cut it in.
