Speed up Qmaster's "Merging distributed QuickTime segments" process?
I'm finding that Qmaster's "Merging distributed QuickTime segments" process takes as long or LONGER than the time it takes to generate the encode itself.
I found this related discussion but no resolution: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1107862&tstart=56
There must be some un-optimized or rate-limiting bit of code in qmaster... i can't explain why the "Status: Processing: Merging distributed QuickTime segments" takes so long. We have a Compressor v3 setup with 24-36 virtual cores depending on config. The thing blazes through the encode process, doing a SD movie in about 4-6 minutes. It's beautiful how fast it runs, but when it gets back to merging segments, the disk activity does not exceed 15-20MB/sec read/write.
I tested my disks on concurrent read/write (this is a simple RAID0 array) and was seeing 80-90MB/sec concurrent read and write on the same volume. There's no knob, switch, or settings file parameter from what I can tell. It's incredibly frustrating for the disk operation to take LONGER than the encode.
Has anyone been able to overcome this problem? I am contemplating SSDs for the qmaster temp, but I don't think that would speed anything up. Does anyone know if this also exists in Qmaster 3.5?
Hi all, thanks for the replies thus far.
Jon Chappell > Compressor Repair is my best friend! Appreciate the links to the other forum with the benchmark results. I'm going to re-create those tests and see how my results compare.
All nodes are connected via 2Gb ethernet (bonded), so network speeds/transfers between cluster storage, source, and encoders are excellent. During encoding, each node is pulling data in over the network from the centralized storage server at well over 100MB/sec and placing the resulting segment on the qmaster temp area on the controller node.
The bottleneck is what happens when the controller (an 8 core 2.66Ghz Xserve with 2TB raid0'd drives) stitches the segments back together again. It's painfully slow, around 20MB/sec when I know the disks are capable of about 3-4x that. During this process, no data is being pulled over the network from the encoder nodes, as they've dumped their segments in he cluster storage node's temp area. It's all local disk i/o during the stitch operation.
Perhaps there's some single-threadedness in that process that prevents qmaster from harnessing all the resources available. All machines in the cluster are identical, so I'm convinced it's something in qmaster's design that may not be user serviceable.

Compressor merging distributed quicktime components VERY SLOW. WHY?
I've got an 8 core mac pro, quickcluster with services, 4 instances.
The quickcluster works GREAT. it's super fast, good CPU Utilization. awesome.
the problem is when all the segments are done and compressor merges the bits together, it goes VERY VERY slowly, in fact it takes much much longer to re-assemble the parts of a 43gb prores file than it does to actually compress it. Activity monitor shows disk transfer speeds of 20mb/s max, and CPU utilization drops to zero. batch monitor says that is has no time remaining.. yet this process takes an hour or more.
I have compressor set up to NOT copy source to cluster since the cluster is in fact my local machine.
rendering to "this computer" only uses maybe 30% of my CPU.
***? why is is so slow? Is there anything I can do to speed it up? for one thing, It seems like the QT segments could be rendered to another drive, and there might be a bit less thrashing that way. but this slowness really is remakably silly for such a powerful system. I mean REALLY silly.Somoflange,
Yes, the "overhead" to which you are referring is something I have experienced as well. One of the Apple Pro Apps guys said to be aware of this problem; that at a certain point, depending on input file size and number of instances you have set the rejoining of the segmented AV clips may start to take longer than it takes to render / compress them.
We experience a major problem with this "overhead" while encoding lots of 1-hour blocks of programming into MPEG-2 transport streams, across 4 Xserves and 1 Mac Pro (the Mac Pro set as cluster controller). Eventhough your setup is all local being a QuickCluster, it sounds like the same problem. We were crunching 1 hour files in under 10 minutes, but the rejoining was taking much longer.
The fix, for us, was dialing down the number of instances in your Qmaster prefs. We did some benchmark tests with the same input file for all 8 dif't instance numbers. For longer files, it actually was faster to only use 2 instances. -

100% complete, stuck @ Processing:merging distributed MPEG segments
I have a 3 machine (proper) cluster and have a 14 hr job stuck in this "100% completer' condition. It's been like that for over 8 hours now.
All machines are up and running and connected to the network. One machine showing a green blob in QCluster icon and QAdministrator shows it's cpatured and processing - I assume it's the one merging segments.
Is there any way to diagnose or recover my job?
I'd hate to have to re-submit a 14hr compressor render :-/Going to reply to myself and mark this is answered in case anyone else has similar problem.
For whatever reason, QMaster decided not to merge my 4 video segments back together - it was working on it then suddenly stopped for no reason I could find.
I found the job (by date) in /private/var/spool/qmaster/string of digits/shared/ had all of the four complete video segments marked m2v-1 , m2v-2 etc. so I used ffmpegX Tools to Join them together and seems like I have a complete MPEG2 file. -
Dear Friends,
in an external PDF all images are splitted to smaller segments.
I heard this is quite common in PDF generation due Postscript.
I am placing this external PDF on an Indesign document page which is also exported again as a final PDF/SWF/JPEG.
But in the final PDF/SWF/JPEG there are white lines visible in the images, when they appear, allways between two image segments.
I heard this is due to rounding errors of position x-/y-coordinates of these image segments rendering them not perfectly onto their intended position.
I think about two general solutions:
Merge all image segments to a complete image.
Being able to position these segments with lock / automatically to make them perfectly edge to each other (but what would be with these rounding errors?).
This is a quite common problem to designers who want to further use the ressources or pages of an external PDF.
Often the senders of those external PDFs have not even got the original data (careless/lost/etc.).
It would be great if there is a reliable, solid solution to this problem.
Thank you for answers in advance!
With best regards
InnoA naive (but possibly sufficient) implementation could just be to keep a table mapping (x,y) pairs to countries. To keep the table smaller, you could map 10x10 blocks of pixels to countries.
Ultimately this is about storing and then managing data.
One hack (in my opinion) is to check the color of the clicked pixel in the image of the map. But that is nasty for a variety of reasons (such as, it keeps you from being able to easily change the map image, and things like text in the map (like the names of countries) kind of screws that up. But it's an option.
You can also keep lists of pixels in sequence describing a polygon, and then use certain algorithms (which I don't recall right now) to determine whether a given point is inside or outside a given polygon.
Also you can do things like "binary space partitions", I think.
These last two things are computer graphics techniques, and are non-trivial to implement. I dimly recall them from college but recall no details. You can get a computer graphics textbook (which tend to be expensive) to get more info, or these days there's probably a wiki about it somewhere.
But I'd suggest keeping it modular. Add a layer of abstraction, writing an API around this functionality. Then write an implementation with a simple table of locations or blocks of locations, and if this proves to be insufficient later, swap it out with something more sophisticated. -
Hi,
Can anyone help me out using the Segment Builder for the following scenario. We have a customer structure that looks like this
1. Corporate group (like Walmart)
ex attribute: size
2. Individual stores
ex attribute: address
3. Contact persons for the individual stores
ex attribute: hobbies
The connection between these three levels are standard relationships.
The segmentation process looks like this.
First, do a segmentation on group level. Ie get all groups with size > 10000 employees.
Second, get all individual stores related to the above criteria and filter these on country = Sweden
Third, for the selected stores, get all contact persons with hobby = Golf
Is it possible to use segment builder for this kind of segmentation? I know that it is no problem to do segmentation for accounts and contact persons, but in this process there is an additional step involved (the selection of corporate groups, step 1).
For the target group an external file is to be created with info from all thre levels (ie, size, country, hobby).
Thanks for any help
AnnaHi,
Thanks for the response. I have now created my own InfoSet using BUT000 and BUT050. Having the Store-level in the left hand side and connecting to the Store-group using BUT050 and the store-group attributes in BUT000.
I can now segment using attributes from CRM tables on both Store and Store-group level resulting in a profile containing of relevant stores. From this profile I can now continue my segmentation using marketing attributes and BW queries on the store level. When I have finished my segmentation on stores I generate a target group for the contact persons for the stores and continue the segmentation on the contact person level.
Some questions:
- In the above scenario I can only segment on Info-Set level on the store-groups. Ie I cannot use Marketing attributes or BW queries because of the fact that stores are the base on which I have to build the profile on. Is there any way i can do the following:
1. Build a profile on store-groups using Infoset/BW queries/Marketing attributes
2. Generate a profile using stores as a base and now continue the segmentation using Infoset/BW queries/Marketing attributes on stores
3. Generate a profile using contact persons and now continue the segmentation using Infoset/BW queries/Marketing attributes on stores
The end result will be a target group with relevant contact persons and the stores.
Another question, as I have understood it a target group is a table of partner guids. There are a set of badis you can enhance to collect attributes for these guids and display in segment builder when yoiu open the target group. In the case of relationships, does the target group contain partner guid for the customer + relationship + partner guid for the contact person??
How does the triggering of the different Badis take place? In which case is the badi for the non-relationship target group called and in which case is the badi for relationship target group called?
thanks for any help in this matter

How to distribute QuickTime to enterprise?
We have 400 Windows XP workstations that we maintain/patch at our higher education institution. We attempted to use Shavlik patch management software to distribute/update QuickTime and Adobe Reader/Flash, but it failed miserably. As such we have decided to write our own scripts to distribute/update QuickTime & Adobe. We signed up with Adobe for redistribution rights and have successfully used the Adobe documentation to deploy/patch Reader/Flash to all of our workstations. However, I can't find any documentation at the Apple site (or via Google) on how to do this for QuickTime. Additionally I tried to simply push it out to a few test workstations via the QuickTime .exe and also the Msiexec of the .msi files, but these both caused the workstations to continually consume 48% of their cpus when they rebooted. I have tried to contact Apple several different ways (online, email, phone), but they have all just "shined me on" and not provided any help. I was hoping the had a process like Adobe where I could sign up to re-distribute Quicken in our organization and they/Apple would in turn provide me with some sysadmin documentation that provides a custom install how-to. Our university (a state institution) is up against ever stricter security policies to establish secure patching procedures which include review/approval of patches before applying them, so we can not use a product's "auto updating" features. If we can't get get Apple to help us out, then we just won't be able to provide Apple's QuickTime (nor iTunes in some cases) to division. * Anybody out there have any ideas how to resolve this? Thanks in advance.
My understanding is that the certificate would be issued to the enterprise itself and not to you.
You c/would use Ad-hoc profiles for beta testing, but then the enterprise would use their certificate to actually deploy.
They would probably want to do this anyway as it's safer for them. i.e. if there's a "falling out" between you and they, they can still get applications deployed to their employees.

Can i merge two or more videos into one long streaming video? I like to take videos of my nephew and cousins of the toddler variety but you end up with these 5 minute little videos. I was thinking about getting quicktime pro but wanted to make sure I would be able to edit the videos with quicktime pro and if I could stick one video onto the end of another.
There are threads here and over in 10.6.x forum as well as Mac related news sites about youtube, flash, plug-ins, itunes, etc performance. QuickTime doesn't surprise me.
There are also some problems with anything that requires Rosetta.
The main reason for getting 3 x 1GB RAM is usually to upgrade on your own later, hopefully cheaper, but I'd play 3GB as very minimal for this system or for 10.6.
The same behavior on same machine but running Windows 7 isn't seen, so it is Mac OS, even though iTunes and QT are mainly single threaded, not optimized, and audio tries to and tends to cause excessive cpu usage.
Don't think Apple 'says' much and someday there may be "improves compatibility and performance" is all that gets listed in software updates, you know? -
BW as Datasource in CRM Segmentation Process
Hello,
We have created some reports in BW to use as Datasource in Segmentation in CRM. In order to access these reports in BW while creating DataSource with origin type BW, we need to create a new RFC destination with a BW Dialog user in the RFC.
Does anyone know what kind of authorization we need for this Dialog user in BW. Thanks in Advance,

How to perform a Merge as a page process
Hi,
I am using an example .csv upload application from the forum to accomplish the following:
1.) allow several users to upload timesheet data into a master timekeeping table.
2.) I have the upload working into a 'temp' table which then needs to be loaded into a master table with a sequenced primary key and the username.
3.) I can get the merge statement to work in SQL workspace but am not sure how to get it to work as a page process after the uploade into the 'temp' table. The page processing only seems to allow anonymous pl/sql blocks and not a simple merge statement.
What is interesting is that on the description of Page Processing it explicitly states 'custom SQL or pl/sql code'.
"A page process is a unit of logic that runs when a specific event occurs, such as loading or submitting page, resetting session state, automatic row processing, or a call to custom SQL or PL/SQL code."
But the parser gives me an error when I try to run the merge after the load of the 'temp' table. Anyone have any advice on this.
PatHi, Dmitri,
Thanks for the reply. I had tested the merge below from SQL workspace and it worked in updating the master table (I need to also add userid, but thought I would start with just the sequence # for now). I may not have syntax correct for pl/sql below but saw a similar anonymous block in John Scott's book so thought it would work.
I am trying to run a pl/sql page process to do the merge:
begin
merge into outlook_calendar_total a
using (select subject, startdate,starttime,enddate,
endtime,alldayevent,meetingorganizer,categories, showtimeas
from outlook_calendar b)
on (1=0)
when not matched
then
insert (a.idnum, a.subject, a.startdate,a.starttime,a.enddate,
a.endtime,a.alldayevent,a.meetingorganizer,a.categories, a.showtimeas)
values (outlook_calendar_seq.nextval,b.subject, b.startdate,b.starttime,b.enddate,
b.endtime,b.alldayevent,b.meetingorganizer,b.categories, b.showtimeas);
end;
I get error message when I try to add this pl/sql to the page process
1 error has occurred
* ORA-06550: line 13, column 58: PL/SQL: ORA-00904: "B"."SHOWTIMEAS": invalid identifier ORA-06550: line 3, column 1: PL/SQL: SQL Statement ignored

Compressor failing after job completion, but only in batches?
First, the setup is a stock MacPro 8-Core 2.8GHz. RAM has been upgraded to 6GB, there's 3TB of SATA 3.0Gbps drives inside. Qmaster is set up with a QuickCluster, and we've tried several variations on the number of virtual nodes. Currently, it's at 8, but we see this problem with 2, 4, 6 as well.
We're working with Uncompressed material, running some scaling and cropping presets and creating a new Uncompressed SD resolution quicktime. By Uncompressed, I actually mean uncompressed (Blackmagic 10 Bit 4:2:2 in and out). The job is segmented and processed, and shows as 100% complete, but fails in every case, *ONLY IF IT'S A BATCH JOB* at the "Merging Distributed QuickTime Segments" stage. If we run these one at a time, they all work fine. The failures vary, but all have to do with Quicktime errors, sometimes it's just "error 2" other times it's more substantive, talking about file offsets being incorrect.
a batch of small files will work fine, but these are all 130GB to 150GB in size.
I've watched the Batch Monitor status until the failure occurs, and the problem seems to be related to disk I/O. This Merging step takes forever - the final file takes almost as long to merge as it does to process. It seems that if there's a merge happening while other jobs are running everything is fine, but once another large merge begins, everything bogs down and they start failing. If we then re-run each one of those individually with the exact same presets, target locations, etc. they run perfectly.
But the idea here is to create a workflow we can just throw jobs at and not have to worry about this. So, is there something we can do to prevent this from happening? Any ideas?

Increasing Processor allocation / speed for encoding / burning Blu Rays
I have several large HDV QT movie files that I have exported from FCP 6.06 and I am burning to BD-R discs using Toast 10.2 and my Lacie external Blu Ray burner. Since Toast uses H.264 it takes quite a while for my PowerBook G4 running Leopard 10.5.8 to encode, then burn the discs. Is there someway to increase the amount of processing power and speed by devoting more than one parallel processor to help with the task? thru Q-Master or something? I don't need to be doing ANYTHING else with my Mac during this time consuming process!
Of course a single movie would be broken up to compress in smaller parts. It's called segmented processing. It's what Qmaster does when you set up a distributed processing network. But you need more than one computer to make it worth while, and they have to be networked on, minimum, a gigabit network, but preferably on a faster Fibre network.
The problem that comes with job segmenting is if you use a variable bit rate, because the bit rate information isn't shared between/amongst the nodes. If you use a CBR, you're all set, but like I said, it won't matter unless you have more than one computer, and you're limited by the slowest computer in the chain, as well as the network.
If you use less than a gigabit connection, the time it takes to transfer the information to and from the cluster controller, and then reconstitute the final video is more than the time it would take to just do it on a single computer. -
Compressor Fails "QuickTime Error: -50" for h.264 Encoding
When I try to compress movies of 720p resolution or greater to h.264 Compressor often fails right at the start with
"QuickTime Error: -50". Any idea what this is or whether there's a workaround?
This is on an 8-processor Mac Pro (16 GB RAM) configured for 7 distributed processors via Qmaster. Export from QuickTime Player works, but I'm not gaining any benefits of multiprocessors. Other compression (to, say, ProRes422) seems to work fine with these files.
I suspect some kind of memory issue, but it seems to only be happening for h.264 compression, and while these movies are rather large, this machine is quite the beast, with adequate RAM.
Help?
multiple2x3Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon Mac OS X (10.4.10)Hi:
I've been experiencing all sorts of issues with compressor, somewhat like this. I think my quicktime plug-ins are the culprit. Example, I have been exporting directly out of Motion with no problems lately, but when I export to Compressor I see my "Flip4Mac" import window several times, then Compressor either fails to export, or crashes.
I would suggest trying a direct export from FCP or Motion, or whatever your source is. See if that works. Just bypass Compressor and choose your HD DVD option from the export window. It does the trick with Motion. -
Documents must be saved before they can be merged - PS CS6
I'm getting a "Documents must be saved before they can be merged" error message while trying to auto stitch panos in PS CS6. As always, I've copied and imported images into LR5, then select images and "edit images in>PS CS6". From there go to Automate>Photomerge and "add open images", which produces the error message.
Until two days ago I've had no problems merging panos using this process. I had not made any changes to my system when this problem started occurring. Since then I have installed Mac and Adobe updates hoping to resolve the issue with no luck.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi,
I have created already a cluster controller with 11 service nodes, installed already the AE6.5, the necessary plugins and qmaster software on all nodes, created also a cluster in qadministration.
When i tried to submit batches in my cluster it is successful but the output files is no where to be found. can anyone help me with this qmaster and AE.
I have read also the forum here about qmaster and AE done everything they told, mounted all the shred drive but still no output files. though my cluster is running, receiving jobs and processing and generating an status of Succesful Progress... After Effects succesfully launched
this is my unix template
/Applications/Adobe\ After\ Effects\ 6.5/aerender -project /Volumes/render-1.local/project/test6.5\ folder/test6.5.aep -comp "Comp 1" -RStemplate "Multi-Machine Settings" -OMtemplate "Multi-Machine Sequence" -s 1 -e 25 -i 1 -output /Volumes/render-1.local/output/test[#####].psd
help anybody!hi johnaris,
in your unix template:
/Applications/Adobe\ After\ Effects\ 6.5/aerender -project /Volumes/render-1.local/project/test6.5\ folder/test6.5.aep -comp "Comp 1" -RStemplate "Multi-Machine Settings" -OMtemplate "Multi-Machine Sequence" -s 1 -e 25 -i 1 -output /Volumes/render-1.local/output/test[#####].psd
there is basically nothing wrong with it. your render nodes are working well. the reason why only one service node is rendering your submitted job is that, you were only submitting 25-frames to render.
By default, qmaster allocates 10-frames each segment (minimum number of frames in each apple qmaster segment). Because your submitted job is 25-frames, Qmaster will divide them into 2 segments of 10 frames each. Mac Minis have 2 cpus, therefore the frames were being accomodated into one mac mini.
For this, try lowering the number of minimum value to 5 under the "Minimum" field. This way, apple qmaster divides the job into 5-segments of 5-frames each. You should have 3 service nodes running with this scenario.
If you like, try setting the minimum value to 1 so qmaster divides the job into 25-segments of 1-frame each. With this, all your 11-macminis (service nodes) should be working.
regarding that "unix error command 9" -- no idea...
hope that helps.
cheers!
