Spin Wheel Appears Randomly

I have recently been having a lot of problems with my 17 inch MacBook Pro. Very oftent, the spin wheel will appear randomly and lock into the spin mode... never getting out of it. I have let it run for long periods and it will continue to spin. I also am not able to "force quit" or start any other apps.
It's quite unpredictable when this will happen. And when it does, the only option I have left is to do a "hard manual powerdown".
I also attempted to update to iLife '08, using a recently purchased family pack dvd. I have successfully updated to a MacBook, a second MacBookPro, and an iMac. But this 17 in MacBookPro fails to update. It will attemp to update and will just hang in the middle of the updating sequence. Again, I have tried this numerous times and also allowed it to sit for long intervals with no change in status. I'm thinking that this may be a related problem.
I have used Disk Utility on several occasions to Repair Permissions. I have also Verified the disks. But it appears to do little in the way of solving this problem.
Can anything be done? Should I have the HD replaced? Can the HD be physically replaced on the MacBookPro? How would I go about replacing the HD?
Thank you.
I'm very frustrated. Any help would be very much appreciated.

I'm not sure how much of the log I should post for you to look at. It doesn't make much sense to me.
Would you like me to post a big chunk of the log?

  • When opening a new tab in Safari, the spinning wheels appears

Please help, I have very basic skills on a computer, so please make this simple and easy!!
When I open a new tab in Safari, it freezes and the spinning wheel appears. It stays on there for a long period of time and does not disappear. In order to get on I need to Force closure in Safari and restart the computer. Sometimes this will solve the problems and sometimes it needs to be restarted a few times.
This is really annoying and stops me using my mac.

  • HT1338 My MacBook Air is very slow. Every time I click the mouse, the spinning wheel appears and remains for up to 30 seconds. Can you help me?

My MacBook Air is very slow. Every time I click the mouse, the spinning wheel appears and remains for up to 30 seconds before the screen changes. This has been happening the past 24 hours. Any ideas?

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than ten or so files or folders on your Desktop, move them, temporarily at least, somewhere else in your home folder.
If iCloud is enabled, disable it.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, if applicable. Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
    Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.

  • While typing a doc in Word, the spinning wheel appeared and froze the Word document.  I had another Word doc open at the time.  I tried to force quit, but it didn't work.  I would like to save it before losing my work, but the spinning wheel blocks me.

While creating a Word doc, the spinning wheel appeared and won't go away.  Another Word doc was open at same time.  How do I get this fixed while saving my work?

    rollrock wrote:

    Basically, you don't.
The 'spinning wheel' is simply an indicator that an operation is taking longer than it should. It doesn't say anything about why, or even if it's an error or not. If it's in Word, it could be that the app is hung, or it could be that it is waiting for some kind of user input, or input from another app. (My bet would be on the former.) You could go into Activity Monitor, identify the process that's making it wait, kill it, cross your fingers and hope that it would generate an error that would cause Word to return control to the user (you). If you had the expertise, that is, and the moon were in right quadrant.
Realistically, your only option is to force-quit Word. Once that is done, if AutoRecovery was on, then, with luck, you could recover much of your work. Here
    <http://kb.iu.edu/data/ahnd.html>
you'll find a quick overview of AutoRecovery and how it works.
If it wasn't on (it should be on by default), then you're out of luck. Chalk it up to experience, turn it on, and back to the grindstone.

  • HT1529 Spinning wheel appears frequently

The spinning wheel has started to appear. I have done the Restart, Shift key down and this has not fixed the issue.

Clone the system to the SSD (250GB $120 EVO 850 Samsung) using CCC -
    http://www.bombich.com
Might be a good time though to do a clean install and then use Setup Assistant
    No maintenance?
Always have a couple bootable system drives, one for maintenance, one from last month or just prior to when you last made changes to the system.
Take a look in Activity Monitor for pageouts, disk usage, and what is running
    And start TimeMachine backup routine,
Copy your data to a new 2TB drive like WD Black ~$120 also
Leave the old drive as is for now, later you can erase and try using for a backup

    Help ASAP needed

Try restoring the iPod via iTunes. First from backup and if problem persists, restore to factory defaults/new iPod.
If still problem make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. If your iPod is with in the one-year warrranty, not abused and defective Apple will replace it.

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
Try a Safe mode boot (hold Shift while booting).
Safe mode boots take longer, so be patient.
If successful, at the login window, click Restart, and allow a normal boot.

Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? When did it start to be slow? Did you change anything just before it started? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

You'll need to transcode teh H.264 to a more stable and useful editing codec. It's in the manuals and we see several H.264 questions every day around here so it's pretty easy to research.
