Splicing Source Clips

Hopefully the answer isn't obvious, as I failed at finding it via forum search and multiple bing/google attempts.
I am a Premiere Pro novice, but working on changing that.
My camcorder records AVCHD clips at roughly 2GB (11 minutes) each.
I recently recorded a series of readings at my son's school (about 17 in all).  Some of the children were nigh inaudible, so I'm trying to use Premiere Pro CS5 to up the gain on the sections that need it.  I actually think I have that part figured out.
The recording was about 22 minutes, spanning 2 MTS files.  I can load them as individual clips and create subclips from the clip panel for tweaking the gain as needed (I'm doing two clips per child, one for performance and one for applause, since the latter is plenty loud enough).
The annoyance I have is that the clip panel resets the time indicator to 0 when I switch to the second clip, and I'm using the sequence/program-monitor panels to navigate the full 22 minute duration (the waveform makes it easy to see applause and jump around), but am unable to make a subclip from my in/out markers in the Program Monitor
Is there a preferred method for joining two (or more) clips in sequence into one clip, so I can work on the full duration as a whole?
I'm currently watching Encoder do an export of the concatenated sequence, but I shudder to think that for every 11 minutes of recording, I need to spend an hour encoding an export simply so I can concatenate clips.
Thanks.

I might be missing exactly what you wish to do, but if I am correct, I think that you will be better served attenuating the Audio with either Keyframes, or with the Audio Mixer (basically adding Keyframes, but Track Keyframes vs Clip Keyframes).
Let's say that you have your two Clips on the Timeline and wish to alter the Audio of one up, and the other one down, with Clip Keyframes, Select one Clip, say the recitation Clip, and open Effects Control Panel. This will reveal the fixed Effects for that Clip, including Volume (for Clips with Audio). Then you can add Keyframes to control the Volume over the Duration of that Clip. These will appear in the mini-Timeline in that Panel, and also, depending on the Keyframe display of the Track, there too. You can attenuate the Volume up/down, as is required, placing Keyframes along that mini-Timeline. You will have great control, and can "ramp" the Volume adjustments for smooth changes in the Volume.
The second method is to use the Audio Mixer to automate those same changes in the Volume. The big differences will be that these Keyframes are attached to the Track, and NOT to the Clip. If you later alter the Clip(s), the changes will stay exactly where you placed them on the Track, regardless of what Clip now appears on that Track. This is best done AFTER all Video editing is done, for obvious reasons. Also, this process, while wonderfully powerful, is a bit more involved, and one should read up on Audio Mixer, and understand exactly how to apply changes, and also exactly what those changes are, and how they are applied.
For a beginning user, I would choose the manual Clip Keyframes method, as one is working with the Clip, and not the Track, and the visual representation is right in front of you. Reading on Keyframing Effects would still be highly recommended.
Here is an example of Audio Keyframes in the PrPro 2.0 Effects Control Panel. CS5 will be similar, but there will likely be some differences:
Hope that this helps. Now, if I missed your intent, or your need, just ignore me.

  • Multiple instances of the same source clip in Project bin

    This is a strange one.
I think its more an issue now than ever due to tapeless format editing. I edit lots of video now shot on Canon 5d. They sometimes have thousands of individual clips.
The problem is that our project files are getting huge and premiere slows to a grinding halt.
We copy paste lots of timelines from one project to another. When we paste, all of the source clips land in the project bin (as you would expect) However, sometimes I have already made reference to the same source files in the edit to begin with (So they are already in the project bin)
However, when I paste a new timeline, it will make another reference to that same source clip in the project bin. Therefore double up reference to a souce clip in the project. Increasing the clips in the overall project, which bloats everything and slows premiere down.
Can premiere be smarter? Can it see that the source file already exists in the project and link to that existing file instead of creating another reference to the same file?
    Hope that makes sence.

I am beginning to think that there is no easy way around this issue.
I have started to use Final Cut and am noticing lots of differences between the two platforms. I have been a Adobe Premiere user for 10 years and I concider myself a NINJA using this program. However, there are definitly differences between the two, this being one of them.
Final cut does not double up on source references in your project bin when copying one sequence from one project into another.
    CLEVER
Its annoying that premiere doubles files up as it gets ridiculously messy in your project bin. Double ups, triple ups, quadruple ups the list goes on.
Its strange cause when you start a Prem project from scratch and import a source clip, you can set in and out points as many times as possible and drag onto the timeline, and it does not duplicate the original source file in the project bin. Thus keeping your project bin neat and clean. However, as soon as you paste a sequence, it goes and duplicates refeneces like its outta control, rather than looking at what you alraedy have in your project bin and saying to itself. (Hmmm well the source clip is already here, so we dont have to duplicate this one....move onto the next file)
Prem is great at lots of things, dont get me wrong. I freaking love the program, however, things like this let it down as the program becomes unusable as it gets bogged down with way too many clip references.
Hmmm, we shall see who wins the day in the end. Time do do some Final Cut edditing now.
P.S. Final cut can do 16 multi clips in a real time edit. Premiere...only 4...come on Prem, pick up your game!

  • Is there any way to retrieve accidentally deleted source clips?

I accidentally deleted source clips for a video project, and now the viewer won't show my video (although I can still see the frames when I run my cursor over the project). Is there any way to retrieve the files or show iMovie where to find the source clips on my computer, kind of like how it's possible to show iTunes where to find source mp3s on my computer when they're moved from the iTunes file? Since I can still see the frames when I move my cursor over the clips (with the exclamation points in the corners), it seems as though the memory of the edited clips must still be in iMovie somehow and be recoverable. Any help would be appreciated - I'd really like to avoid having to re-import and re-edit all of those clips!

    Basics of File Recovery
    Files in Trash
If you simply put files in the Trash you can restore them by opening the Trash (left-click on the Trash icon) and drag the files from the Trash to your Desktop or other desired location.  OS X also provides a short-cut to undo the last item moved to the Trash -press COMMAND-Z.
If you empty the Trash the files are gone. If a program does an immediate delete rather than moving files to the Trash, then the files are gone.  Recovery is possible but you must not allow any additional writes to the hard drive - shut it down. When files are deleted only the directory entries, not the files themselves, is modified. The space occupied by the files has been returned to the system as available for storage, but the files are still on the drive. Writing to the drive will then eventually overwrite the space once occupied by the deleted files in which case the files are lost permanently. Also if you save a file over an existing file of the same name, then the old file is overwritten and cannot be recovered.
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • Moving and copying events and projects to an external hard drive using Imovie09-Source clip is missing

Some background on what I am doing is importing all of my home video into an event in IMovie. Since DVD's can only hold about 2 hours of footage, I am making a new project for each 2 hours so I can burn the footage onto a DVD. I want to make space on my internal hard drive so I am trying to move the projects that are completed to an external drive. Because I also don't want to lose any footage I have imported into the event I am also copying the home video event to the external drive. (didn't want to move it yet until I know what i am doing, just in case it is lost somehow).
I tried moving a project to the external drive (it was a slideshow for my daughters first birthday which contained photos and video clips from the event that was already copied to the external drive). The project did move to the external hard drive but on the video clips there is a yellow triangle that says source clip is missing. I am moving and copying from within Imovie and NOT the finder so I don't understand why it says the clip is missing when it is definitely a part of the event that is already on the external drive.
What is interesting is the source clip is missing error showed on the first birthday project but it did NOT show as an error when I moved the 2 hour home video project. (All of the video in these projects are coming from the same home video event)
I am trying to make sure that when I move the projects permanently off the internal hard drive and onto the external drive, that I am not losing any part of my projects. I want to be able to easily move them back and forth if needed without any missing files.
Any suggestions as to why I am still receiving the yellow triangle?

As I can't see what you are doing, I can't tell you what you might be doing wrong.
You could try trashing the preferences.
Many weird things happen as a result of corrupt preferences which can create a vast range of different symptoms, so whenever FCP X stops working properly in any way, trashing the preferences should be the first thing you do using this free app.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
Shut down FCP X, open PreferenceManager and in the window that appears:-
    1. Ensure that only  FCP X  is selected.
    2. Click Trash
The job is done instantly and you can re-open FCP X.
There is absolutely no danger in trashing preferences and you can do it as often as you like.
The preferences are kept separately from FCP X and if there aren't any when FCP X opens it automatically creates new ones  .  .  .  instantly.

  • All of a sudden, I can't watch any of my films from the Event Library, it also says 'Source Clip is missing' in the other window, I haven't even touched anything that I know of?

All of a sudden, I can't watch any of my films from the Event Library, it also says 'Source Clip is missing' in the other window, I haven't even touched anything that I know of?

    Hi
I haven't even touched anything that I know of?
And You've not moved or emptied any folder on Your Hard Disk named
    • iMovie Event's - or -
    • iMovie Project's
Or - disconnected any external hard disk/s
As one CAN NOT move the Event's or Project's on / via DeskTop/Finder - AS iMovie then loses the connection to them. Moving them - MUST BE DONE - within iMovie application - to work OK.
So if You by meaning or accident moved it/them - Move them back - and iMovie might work again.
ELSE - If You are 100% sure that You didn't move them then
    • Trash iMovie Pref and Cache files
    • Run Repair Permissions - Disk Util tool
    • Run Repair Hard Disk - Disk Util tool - BUT YOU MUST Start-Up Your Mac from DVD or External HD to do this
and may be all will work OK again

  • Exported image is always stretched... source clips 1080p, sequence settings 720p.

So I'm trying to export a file from FC7 at 720p, but it always comes out stretched, no matter what resolution I have the export set to. The source clips are mostly 1080p, but I chose to edit 720p because my Mac was just too slow to be able to efficiently edit in 1080p.
    Sequence settings:
    Frame Size: 1280x720 (HD 720p)
Pixel Aspect Ration: NTSC - CCIR 601 / DV (720x480)
    Anamorphic: Off
The clip settings are mostly 1920x1080, however I'm also working with some still images that vary in resolution. In editing, all of the clips are zoomed in, as I'm trying to cut out some aspects of the image, and focus on specific details within the clip's frame.
In the canvas, the image looks just as it should be, but whenever I export, it is noticeably stretched. I feel like I've run out of options, and I'm thinking of re-editing the entire thing (it's not that long) in 1080p. My gut tells me that it has to do with the clip formats being different from the sequence settings, but I can't figure out anything else that I could try to get it to export properly.
I was hoping if anybody had any ideas, they could shoot them my way. I'd appreciate it.
    Thanks!

Unfortunately this did not work, but I feel like it should have when I observe the clip settings. Interestingly, when I set the sequence Pixel Aspect Ratio to square, the image on the canvas appears stretched in the same way that it does in all the exported files that I had previously created. The clip settings are as follows:
    Resolution: 1920x1080
    PAR: Square
    Compressor: H.264
    Frame rate: 59.94
Other images that I used are varying resolutions, but also have a square PAR. The sequence settings are as I mentioned in the opening post, but here are some added details that vary from the clip settings:
    Compressor: Apple Proress422
    Frame rate: 29.97
I tried changing all of the PAR of the clip settings to match the sequence settings, but this didn't work either. Honestly, I think I might just resort to working within 1080p where the sequence settings are changed to match the clip settings exactly, because I opened up a test sequence and it works just fine this way. I appreciate the help a lot though, thank you!

  • CS6 Match Frame Problem, Sequence Clip vs Source Clip issue

    Hey folks.
So, I'm on Windows 7, Premiere Pro CS6.
I've found an issue with Match Frame (Control F), it seems to be acting inconsistently.  Sometimes when I double click on a clip in my sequence and hit F it brings up the sequence clip, other times it brings up the source clip (in the Source Monitor)
The problem here is that I'm placing markers on my sequence clips to line them up based on visual cues in the scene.  This work fine for a while, but then, seemingly randomly, I'll double click a sequence clip and when I hit F it brings up the source clip, not the sequence clip.  Now when I place markers they do not show up in the sequence because I'm marking the source clip not the sequence clip.
Anyone else encounter this?  If needed I can try to capture video of this happening.
    Thanks all,
    ~ James

Does this mean that it isn't possible to "Reviel in project", or otherwise locate a merged clip in the project window?
So far "Reveal in project", and "match frame", point to the same subfile of a merged clip... not very useful. What other options are there?
... A sad workaround is to type in the name of the merged file in the search frame at the top of the Project pain.
I guess this one for the feature request list.

  • Preserving Source Clip Information Upon Export In Premiere

Is there a way to export clips from sequence timeline and preserve source clip metadata?
Example - I have a clip I used warp stabilizer on and I have marked the clip with in/out. Now I would like to export the clip with same clip name and source timecode and hoping there is a setting to do so.
    Thanks, Chris

  • Source Clips Missing After Moving Them

I found a few threads about this but I didn't find a solution that worked for me so I thought I ask again.
I just bought a new HD with Firewire 800. I moved all my events to it using iMovie '09 by holding the command key and "moving" them. Now my 20+ projects are all missing their source clips.
How can I help iMovie to find where the clips have been moved to?
    Thanks in advance.

Are you sure you are doing the Command-Drag from within iMovie?
You should see a small icon for your external drive in the Event Library List. Drag your Event from its place in the Event Library List for the internal drive to this icon while holding the command key.
You can also find detailed instructions for this in iMovie Help.

  • HT1026 Moved iMovie files to an external HD- Now have a project full of 'Source clip cant be found' yellow triangles.

I have foolishly moved my files to an external HD without following this advice. Now I'm left with a project full of 'Source clip cant be found' yellow triangles. Am I seriously going to have to start again or can I move them back somehow? They are from a variety of events and having tried moving some of them back into the imovie events folders using finder, I'm having no luck. Any help?!?

The other thread I found is here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1908460&tstart=15
I had some initial success after moving my projects and events on to the ext drive. iMovie reconnected the missing source clips and all of my projects played fine, with music and video intact. Hooray!
However I opened iMovie last night only to discover the source clips missing again. The music and photo stills are fine, it's just the iPhoto video. When I pass the cursor over the ! it tells me it is looking for the files on my HD even though they no longer exist there as I chose the MOVE option, not the COPY.
    Agh!
I also tried the consolidate media option which tells me not all of the clips and events are on my ext drive (funny that they were yesterday) but when I click the option to move them, nothing happens.
Do you still have a copy of the events on your ext drive? Can you try copying them over again?

  • DVCPROHD Clips lose sync when added from subclip but not from source clips?

I am cutting with 1080P DVCPROHD.
I have sub clipped all the master clips.
However when I add footage to the time line from the sub clips it comes into the time line out-sync...WAY out of syn.
However if I find my shot in the sub clip...then match frame to the source clip before I edit to the time line the sync is solid?
    Whats the deal?
    Anyone get anything similar?

  • Source clips missing?

so i was going to upload a video to youtube the day after i had deleted a bunch of old files. some of these files contained clips i was using for my video. i turned on my computer and went to upload the video. instead of the upper right hand box of Imovie showing my video it said "SOURCE CLIPS MISSING" in white letters.
Please help me i will be extremely disappointed if all that work was for nothing

You need the source clips if you want to render the movie again.
If you have Shared a copy of the movie somewhere, you could upload that copy to YouTube. Did you share to iTunes, or to the Media Browser, or Export to QuickTime before destroying your video?

  • Volume in multi cam sequences drastically lower than source clips

When I put a multi cam sequence into a new sequence the volume level is drastically lower than on the source clips.  Each source clip has 2 mono audio tracks instead of 1 stereo track.  Does that make a difference?
    Rex

Typically only A1 is used in the multicam cut, so yes the overall volume would be lower than with all audio tracks active.

  • Any way to know where a clip came from within the source clip?

Using Premiere Pro CS4, Version 4.2.1, on an i7 based PC.
I would like to be able to see where a clip on the timeline came from within the clip in the source monitor. Where ever there is information about the clip on the timeline, it only seems to tell me it's 'Start', 'End' and 'Duration' in relation to the current Sequence, but nothing relating to the 'In' or the 'Out' points within the source clip.
Is it possible to read this somewhere, rather than having to replay the clip in the source monitor to discover the in and out points? It tends to be tedious doing this too often.
    Thanks in advance, hopefully.
    Peter.

    Awesome sauce Shooter
That is exactly what I wanted to know.
    Much appreciated!!!

  • I don't have the source clips on my mac, can I make it work anyway?

I posted a thread yesterday, but as I put it in the wrong forum and the problem is another, I made a new one.
So here is the first post, https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3954346
I have the clips in Imovie, but I can't play them as "the source clips are missing". I searched a little bit and saw that some people have had the same problem, but the difference is that I actually don't have the source clips on my mac anymore. Is there any way to fix this, or can't you play the movies without them?
    Thanks!

    Hi
    As Karsten writes - NO
This is due to that You are using a NON-destructive Video editor. Meaning the raw-material goes into one bin (folder) and then it's not touched any more.
Your Project is a text document referring to the raw material and what of it and how it's to be played - This is Your movie. So there are no Movie Project - until it is rendered and saved as such.
This is also why - the Event's folder is enormous and Project folder very tiny - there is no movie here - just a conductor sheet on howto play Your Event folder as a Movie.
Parallel - there are no Symphony in a note-book either - just how it's supposed to be played.
    Yours Bengt W
