CS6 Match Frame Problem, Sequence Clip vs Source Clip issue

Hey folks.
So, I'm on Windows 7, Premiere Pro CS6.
I've found an issue with Match Frame (Control F), it seems to be acting inconsistently.  Sometimes when I double click on a clip in my sequence and hit F it brings up the sequence clip, other times it brings up the source clip (in the Source Monitor)
The problem here is that I'm placing markers on my sequence clips to line them up based on visual cues in the scene.  This work fine for a while, but then, seemingly randomly, I'll double click a sequence clip and when I hit F it brings up the source clip, not the sequence clip.  Now when I place markers they do not show up in the sequence because I'm marking the source clip not the sequence clip.
Anyone else encounter this?  If needed I can try to capture video of this happening.
Thanks all,
~ James

Does this mean that it isn't possible to "Reviel in project", or otherwise locate a merged clip in the project window?
So far "Reveal in project", and "match frame", point to the same subfile of a merged clip... not very useful. What other options are there?
... A sad workaround is to type in the name of the merged file in the search frame at the top of the Project pain.
I guess this one for the feature request list.

  • PP CS6 same settings as sequence created from source clip ...

If there is documentation on this one, let me know, I didn't see anything at a glance.   I am trying to educate myself on PP CS6 and encoding when one selects same settings as sequence on export where the sequence was created from a clip.  (And also just trying to understand the basics of encoding, codecs, formats, containers, etc. generally speaking.)   Keep in mind I am coming from a consumer level of understanding and prior used another editor that had "smart rendering" whereby if you selected an output matching a clip it matched everything and encode only what changed.  My source video in this case is from a Countour+ helmet camera unit: 1280x720, 59.94, progressive, .mov, "avc1" codec and H.264 reported by Gspot.    Let me know if you need more information.
Ok so when I do an export as noted above I see PP selecting "MPEG Preview" for the format and "MPEG I-Frame" for the codec, both options grayed out.  If I run gspot I get the same width, height, frame rate, etc. as the original source clips only gspot reports the format is mpeg-2.   I was expecting to see the mpeg-4/h.264 like the source video.   Is this result to be expected?
Secondarily, if your goal was to have a file that can play on your Sony PS3 (and a PC), what settings would you choose for export if you wanted to have the highest quality result?

Jim - you were spot-on.  Here's the response from Dropcam, in case anyone else had the same issue:
You are actually correct in that the frame rate for Dropcam's video does vary depending on a few factors. The fps slows down for night vision to average out image noise and increase the image quality. The fps will also slow down when there is no motion going on in a scene to conserve bandwidth.

  • Match frame from subclip to original full clip?

Can anybody tell me if it is possible to match frame from a subclip to the original full clip?  When I match frame from a clip in my timeline that came from a subclip, the subclip loads into the source monitor.  I can't find how to then match frame from that back to the original.  I am relatively new to Premiere Pro, and this is a very very useful feature over in Avid land.
    Thanks.

    Thanks for elaborating.
You can achieve at least part of what you describe by making your subclips "soft." To do so at creation-time, in the Make Subclip dialog, uncheck the option "Restrict Trims to Subclip Boundaries." To convert an existing "hard" subclip, access the Edit Subclip dialog (Clip>Edit Subclip, or right-click>Edit Subclip, or define a keyboard shortcut and use that) and uncheck the option.
Soft and hard subclips behave differently in two notable ways:
when you doubleclick a soft subclip in the Timeline, the Source Monitor loads the whole clip. The zoom/scrub bar is zoomed in to the In/Out range of what's used in the sequence, but you can zoom out to view the whole thing. Note that Match Frame does not load the clip in the same way--you're not able to zoom out. However, double-clicking a clip automatic matches frame (if the playhead is over the clip you clicked).
You can trim out beyond the defined Subclip Boundaries, either in the Timeline or Source Monitor.
Now, if you want to create a completely new subclip for a different segment, there's no direct command for that, but it's achievable through a series of steps that you may find easier than restarting from the original master clip. (Almost all of the following commands can be executed via keyboard shortcuts.)
Reveal in Project (from Timeline or Source Mon)
    Duplicate
Load the dupe in the Source Monitor
    Edit Subclip
Select the option "Convert to Master Clip" checkbox and click OK.
At this point, the whole clip will be loaded in the Source Monitor, zoomed to the subclip's In/Out range but without In/Out points set. You can set new In/Out points, then save a new subclip.
As to why PPro does not maintain a master/sub relationship, I'm afraid I have no clue. I'd say it merits a feature request--both to maintain the link and, naturally, to provide a way to jump from the subclip to the master. You can submit such a request here: http://www.adobe.com/go/wish

  • "Reveal in project" greyed out and match frame problems (Premiere Pro CC 7.0)

I'm trying to reveal a clip in project window by right clicking a clip in timeline and choosing "Reveal in project", but the function is greyed out. Is it because the clips are merged? The clips have one track of video and 1-3 audio tracks depending on clip. When option+right click either only video or audio, i get the "Reveal in project" available, but when clicked, nothing happens.
I also have problems with match frame. When i put a new (merged) clip on the timeline, it works, until i try the match frame again on different time. So it kind of works only on the clip that was previously edited to the timeline, and only once. Works fine with regular clips.
Clips were merged using in or out point as the sync point, and "Remove audio from AV clip" checked. Audio and video sources don't have matching timecodes.
I'm using CC 7.0 on Mac OS 10.7.5.

Is it because the clips are merged?
Yes.  Match Frame does seem to have issues with Merged Clips as well.

  • Match frame and sequences

    Hi Guys,
Another question from the avid to fcp transistion.
I made selects sequences and then edited from them into my cut, when I try to match frame back to the master clip I can't get past the select sequence.
Help, I can't figure it out, I know it's probably something simple.
    Thanks

PW3 - don't cut from a sequence like that - you end up with nested sequences that way - this isn't an Avid. Instead hold down the cmd-key when you press F10 to overwrite, cmd-F9 to insert, in the contents of the sequence in your viewer, instead of cutting in a nested sequence. Then the match back will work as expected.

  • In/out markers being set in the sequence instead of source clip

    Here's what's happening:
    1) I open a clip in the source monitor
    2) I set the in/out points of a subclip and drag it to the timeline, no problem
    3) I scroll around in the source monitor, finding a new clip
    4) I hit in/out and try to drag the clip from the source monitor
    5) The original clip is dragged over and I notice that the in/out points were set on my sequence instead of my source monitor.
The issue seems to be that focus doesn't follow the mouse intuitively? The focused/highlighted window remains the sequence even if I'm actively scrolling around in the source monitor and even if I hit in/out keys while the cursor is in the source monitor window -- the only way I can get the source monitor to be the focus is if I explicitly click on it.
I've only recently upgraded after some time over in FCP-land, but I feel as though this didn't seem to happen to me in previous versions of Premiere. Is there a preference or anything I can do to enable this to work? Many thanks in advance if anyone has ideas.
I'm on OS X Mountain Lion.

the only way I can get the source monitor to be the focus is if I explicitly click on it.
That's normal.  If you want to keep focus on the Source Monitor, use the Insert or Overlay Edit commands instead of dragging.

  • Sequence playout with source clip timecodes?

What I want is actually quite simple, but it's more difficult then I thaught.
Our cameraman has shot al lot of material onto Panasonic P2 cards (and copied them on to a Harddrive). And now I need to make a rushes playout with burned in timecode. (and i don't want to render)
All the clips have timecode from itself (time of day). Is it possible to create a playout with those timecodes instead of the master sequence timecode? (a little bit like freerun) With the use a digibeta recorder to read the timecode from de rs422 port (and then crash rec on a dvdrecorder)
    Anybody who can help me?
    Ciao, Gideon

YOu want to output the sequence, and have the deck record the timecode that exists on the clips themselves? So that you then make a tape of all the P2 footage and retain the P2 footage TC?
Sorry, I don't know of any edit system that does that. Timeline timecode, or pre-striped TC only.

  • Some questions/findings - Merged Clips, Markers, Match Frame, Source Clips etc

    Hi,
Working on my second long form project with CC (1 hour + timelines) and am encountering some problems with merged clips.
Problem 1 - So I do all my markers in a video clip (which can take hours).  I add names and copy the names into the markers notes.  I then merge the clips (video with sound) and the markers are there but all the notes have gone.  This doesn't always happen but it happens enough for me to have been looking for answers as its completely wasted time.
Problem 2 - More variations of lost markers.  In some cases I have put markers on sound clips.  Merged with video and the markers are there but all names and comments have gone.
Problem 3 - Merged clips - I am sharing the project with another editor (I am PC based and he is Mac based).  I set everything up so he has a mirror of my files and folder structure.  I send him new edits (timelines) and some merged clips work fine sometimes the audio goes offline.  This can also be reversed.  He sends me edits and sometimes the merged clips work fine and sometimes the audio disappears.  The real problem comes when you have then lost your markers on the video and audio and end up having no idea where the in points are as the match frame doesn't work on merged clips.  It only matches the frame on the merged clip and not the source clip.
Problem 4 - Clips going offline but they are online.  I get this quite often, mainly with sound (recorded on a zoom recorder - STE-001.wav etc).  Quite often it will say the clip is offline so I click to "locate" and it directs me to the file but it has seemingly not linked it.  So CC knows where the clip is... I just have to select it and its linked.  Why does it come up as offline/locate when it's in exactly the same place it was and the CC path takes me straight to the clip?
    What I need to be able to do with merged clips is;
1 - I need to be able to easily get to the source material for each merged clip.  Say for example I put a merged clip in a timeline.. and the audio has seemingly gone offline.  If I click the audio I would like to go back to the merged clip and then select if I need to go back to the audio or video for said merged clip and for match frame to be frame accurate on the audio and video.  I used to live by this in Avid.  Reveal in project is great but again it takes me to the merged clip and not the source clips.  Surely there is a way to get back to the source clips Audio/Video?
2 - I need to have a way that marker information will not get lost in merged clips... EVER!!!  I really can't pinpoint why it happens or when it happens but it happens, too often.  Some clips it seems fine and then all of a sudden the info is gone.  Once it's gone there's no way of getting it back.  I need to be able to 100% save the marker info.  Even if it's as a separate word doc or something.  A documentary with maybe 20-+ hours of interviews... all logged nicely via markers and then for me to randomly lose marker info is absolutely not up to scratch.  PLEASE SORT IT
Finally.... I am still posting in the PP forum.  is there not a dedicated CC forum yet?  I couldn't find it.. am I missing something?  Makes it real hard in Google if I have to go through PP posts as well.
    Thanks

This bug is NOT FULLY FIXED.  I'm on a tight deadline so i'm not looking very hard online to see if i'm alone - so please forgive me for just posting here...
I'm using CC7.2.1 it's 1/21... very grateful that match frame FINALLY works on merged clips, but, again, this insert/overwrite bug is only PARTIALLY FIXED.
Insert/overwrite with merged clips on 3-point edit now works, but ONLY when cutting in BOTH merged video+audio... if you're just trying to cut in the audio from a merged clip using a 3-point/4-point edit via hotkey, it's a no-go.
I, for example, needed to re-cut in audio under some video with effects on it. So, I unpatched the video source completely and patched source audio tracks 1-4 to the appropriate sequence tracks. Upon hitting insert or overwrite multiple times, nothing responds. The only way to cut anything in from the source (merged clip) was to patch the source video back into the timeline on an unused video track, then cut ALL the tracks from the source in, I then had to delete the video track re-link the now free audio to the original video. Not a big deal, but annoying enough & waste of precious time on tight deadline.
So, yeah, I have a workaround but is still not appropriate to have a core function not work properly. Especially when I'm working with a very complicated timeline.
That said, thanks for keeping on top of our gripes, Mark.

  • 12 tracks of audio on match frame to a clip captured with 2 tracks of audio

Hi. I'm new to FCP 5.1.4 but am very experienced in 4.5. My problem is the following:
Some of the clips I've captured using a Blackmagic DV NTSC Easy Setup appear to have captured correctly in the browser with 1 Video track and 2 audio tracks. They even open into the Viewer as such. When I drop the clip into a sequence and match frame back to the viewer, the clip suddenly has 12 mono audio tracks. Has anyone run into this?
The number 12 makes sense, because the Blackmagic DV NTSC setup gives me no other option than to have 12 tracks of audio, but when the footage is logged, it is logged as 1V, 2A.
I hope I'm providing enough info. Please let me know if you need to know anything else. Any ideas?

Might be the same, but I used to get 8 tracks in AJA. Turn off the tracks 4-12 in the clip settings tab in the log and capture window. You basically captured 10 empty audio tracks. Do this by clicking the green speakers next to the tracks. They should be grayed out, except the ones you want to capture.

  • Match Frame broken in Premiere Pro CC?

So match frame works in CS6, but in Premiere Pro CC, there are a couple odd things happening for me.  When pressing F the Source panel will exibits any one of a few different behaviors (seems entirely random):
    1.  A black frame
    2.  The correct clip, but not the correct (matched) frame.
    3.  Occassionally the correct (matched) frame (usually only the first time I use Match Frame on any given clip in my sequence).  All subsequent Match Frame commands while on the same clip in the sequence will not update to match Source with Program, they'll either stay on the first matched frame for that clip, or go black.
You can still drag the audio (or video) portion from the Source panel to the timeline and it will be the correct portion of audio (or video), but actually "matching" a frame seems broken in Premiere Pro CC (again, it works in CS6).

Right.  That much is understood.  However, what I'm experiencing is different.  I've determined it is only happening to some clips.  Others work as intended (as you've described).  I wish I had time to get sidetracked today and post a video of what's happening.  It'll have to wait until I'm wrapped up with my current multi-cam project (due last week).
I know, I know.  My bad for using Premiere Pro CC on a real-world project with a real-world deadline.  Lesson learned.
In the mean time, if anyone wants to try reproducing this bug, here's what I know about my footage:
h.264 footage MP4, MOV shot on a Canon EOS 7D.  No external audio recorder, just a mic on top of the camera, plugged into the camera.
Most clips work properly with Match Frame.  Some do not.
Interestingly, the clips that have the problem are the SAME clips that do not have the problem (once on the timeline, is there a way to tell which is a subclip, merged clip, etc?  Probably.  No time to investigate.  I shouldn't even be spending time writing this post.  lol.)
Play around with different clips and subclips of the same clip on the timeline.  I believe what I have going is several subclips of the same clip on the timeline.  Unless I missed one or two, I've set them all up with "soft" handles (new feature in CC).
Perhaps what is happening in the "black" Match Frame clip is that the Match Frame is saying, "OK, we have a subclip on the timeline that starts at 0 seconds and 14 frames.  So then when I do the match frame (of this "soft" subclip) the software is saying, let's find this clip and jump to 00:00:00:14 of the master clip and place it in the Source monitor.
Is this a bug?  I'm not sure that's what is happening, but hopefully that gives someone else a starting point to try to reproduce the behavior.
    I'll post a video if/when I can.

  • Match Frame in Multicam

    Hello,
i am a proffessional video editor. I use Avid Media Composer for about 12 years.
Two weeks ago i began to try Premiere Pro CS6 and i have a question about the multicam feature.
I can say that you `ve done good work!
    Although i need your help.
I needed to use match frame on the sequence so i could find the sourse footage and didnt work...
It always gave me the multicam source frame, but i wanted the original source frame.
    Is there any such feature?
    Thanks in advance!
    Stavros

Interesting... I thought I had a work-around but I just tested it and it doesn't work!  Hopefully someone else can expand on this.
I know that the "match frame" will always show the multicam source (not the original clip source) because a multicam sequence is looked at as a nest.  What I **thought** (and was wrong) was that by opening the multicam nest in the timeline and performing a "match frame" on that, the original source frame would be found.  But it wasn't.  In fact, it didn't do anything.  Now I'm thinking it was "confused" because thre were (in my test) three video tracks open and enabled.  But even if I disabled everything but one track, the "match frame" still didn't work.
One thing that will work (though it's more trouble than it's worth), is to use match frame to locate the timecode in the multiclip and then type that into timecode indicator of the multiclip nest in the Timeline.

  • Match Frame in Avid equal to ... in FCP

    Hi, All,
When I was using Avid, there was a button called Match Frame. Once I highlighted a clip on the timeline and right-clicked Match Frame in Avid, it would show the clip on Viewer and Browser.
I wonder if FCP has the similar function. The situation is that when I have a clip on timeline and suddenly want to trace back and review the original clip on Viewer, for now, I have to find it from Browser manually. I wonder if there is another faster way in FCP.
    Thanks.
    King

My advice would be to open the manual and put "match frame" into the search box or look in the index.
FCP is not Avid, whatever that is, and you're going to want to unlearn a bunch of your previous system's shortcuts and workflow routines. Wait till you try media management in FCP! Oy.
Welcome to the family. You're going to love FCP, you're going to hate FCP.

  • Accidentally split 2 events, now "source clip missing" in my project, HELP!

Ok, so I've been working for weeks on a project, and I accidentally split an event into 2 events. Dumb I know, but I was trying to split a single clip. Anyway, it split the event and made 2 new events. I tried to "undo" but for some reason it didn't work. Now alot of the clips say "source clip missing". I looked in the trash and found my missing original event folder, but it's empty cos all the videos are still in the event, but under the 2 new events. I tried to put the folder back into imovie, I re-merged the 2 split events and renamed it the original name (after someone on a forum suggested this) and nothing works. I am freaking out! It is crazy cos all the video is still there (at least I think it is). Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!!!

Thank You Sameer. It worked. Now I can close this issue.
    Regards,

  • Exported image is always stretched... source clips 1080p, sequence settings 720p.

So I'm trying to export a file from FC7 at 720p, but it always comes out stretched, no matter what resolution I have the export set to. The source clips are mostly 1080p, but I chose to edit 720p because my Mac was just too slow to be able to efficiently edit in 1080p.
    Sequence settings:
    Frame Size: 1280x720 (HD 720p)
Pixel Aspect Ration: NTSC - CCIR 601 / DV (720x480)
    Anamorphic: Off
The clip settings are mostly 1920x1080, however I'm also working with some still images that vary in resolution. In editing, all of the clips are zoomed in, as I'm trying to cut out some aspects of the image, and focus on specific details within the clip's frame.
In the canvas, the image looks just as it should be, but whenever I export, it is noticeably stretched. I feel like I've run out of options, and I'm thinking of re-editing the entire thing (it's not that long) in 1080p. My gut tells me that it has to do with the clip formats being different from the sequence settings, but I can't figure out anything else that I could try to get it to export properly.
I was hoping if anybody had any ideas, they could shoot them my way. I'd appreciate it.
    Thanks!

Unfortunately this did not work, but I feel like it should have when I observe the clip settings. Interestingly, when I set the sequence Pixel Aspect Ratio to square, the image on the canvas appears stretched in the same way that it does in all the exported files that I had previously created. The clip settings are as follows:
    Resolution: 1920x1080
    PAR: Square
    Compressor: H.264
    Frame rate: 59.94
Other images that I used are varying resolutions, but also have a square PAR. The sequence settings are as I mentioned in the opening post, but here are some added details that vary from the clip settings:
    Compressor: Apple Proress422
    Frame rate: 29.97
I tried changing all of the PAR of the clip settings to match the sequence settings, but this didn't work either. Honestly, I think I might just resort to working within 1080p where the sequence settings are changed to match the clip settings exactly, because I opened up a test sequence and it works just fine this way. I appreciate the help a lot though, thank you!

  • Problem: Sequence has different length then clip

I have 2 clips in FCP that I have set in and out values such that they both have the same duration (00:03:11;12). They are 2 different angles of the same event.
When I create a new sequence and drop one of these clips into the timeline, the sequence duration is 6 frames more then the clip it was created from (00:03:11;18).
I can't understand why this is happening. I have done this exact same process with other 2 other clips and the timeline duration matched the clip duration, exactly.
I'm doing this so I can create a composite image from both clips such that one clip is playing in the background while a scaled down version of the other clip is playing in the foreground.
This duration change is a problem because the 2 original clips and the third composited clip are going to be brought in DVD Studio Pro to provide 3 camera angles. In order to create the 3 camera angles, all clips must have the exact same duration.
I don't just want to set an out on the sequence that is 6 frames shorter because 1) I should not have to do this and 2) it may mess-up the video sync between the different camera angles.
    How do I fix this?

I converted these a bunch of clips to DV from other formats. It seems some of these clips use drop frame and some do not use drop frame. The video that was having problems was not drop-frame, but the sequence was using drop frame. When I changed my sequence settings not use drop frame, the timing was correct.
Not sure why there is a difference in the conversions, but at least I know what caused the timing difference.
    Thanks.
