Split Document (EPUB only) InDesign CC

Hi
I have a problem with the "Split Document (EPUB only)" option in InDesign CC.
When I checked the option "Split Document (EPUB only)" and save, close and re-open the same file. The option "Split Document (EPUB only)" will be UNchecked.
Is it a bug or is there something I'm doing wrong?
Kind Regards
Dries Hermans

Hi Pooja
I'm working with InDesign CC Version 9.2.1.
These are the exact steps:
Open a file from a bookfile;
Opening the paragraph style options of a style;
Going to the menu "Export Tagging";
I'll check the "Split document (EPUB only)" option on;
Saving the style;
Saving the file;
Closing the file;
Saving the bookfile;
Export the book to ePub with the "Split document: Based on Paragraph Style Export Tags" on.
The ePub wil not be split on the tagged style because the "Split document (EPUB only)" option will be checked off.
I Think the only sollution is to keep the file open before exporting the ePub. Isn't it?
Kind Regards
Dries H.

  • When exporting to epub, only about 1/3 of my chapters are getting the page breaks. Each chapter is in its own doc, and I've tried splitting it apart by doc. and by H1, with no luck. HELP

    All my paragraph styles seem to jive, and no matter what I do, most of my chapters seem to miss their page breaks. I've heard of others having this issue with older versions of Indesign, but I'm on CC2014, and I thought that should be fixed by now. I really don't want to have to learn HTML code and go break open the epub doc to fix it manually, because that doesn't always work across all devices either.  I know others have to of  run into this problem before. What am I doing wrong?

    Make sure the paragraph style applied to the chapter title (if that's the first line of each chapter) is tagged. Open the paragraph style and go to Export Tagging and check Split Document (epub only). Then when you export (assuming you are using reflowable) under General>Split Document check Based on Paragraph Style Export Tags. Try it and let us know if this helps.

  • EPUB Split Document -- minor bug

    Hi,
    Let's say you've selected some text. You create a new paragraph style
    based on the formatting of that text. You click the "Split Document"
    checkbox in the para style definitions dialog. Then you click okay to go
    ahead and create the style.
    If you go back into the style definitions, you'll see that "Split
    Document" is UNchecked, and has to be checked again, even though when
    you created the style it was checked.

  • I can't select split document option with CS6

    Hi. I have Indesign CS5.5 on PC but I have been working on a document with the trial of CS6. I have set a table of contents (in the user interface, not in the book pages.)
    I'm all set to export the document. In CS5.5 i have the option to tick the box Export Document at Paragraph Style and then select the style that I want my book to be split at. This always works fine.
    However when using CS6 to export to epub i select the Advanced tab. The Split Document box does not list the style I want to use to split the document.
    It just has Body text, Chapter Title, intro/outro and Based on Paragraphy Style Export Tag. Why can I not select the style I want that is in my document?
    Is it a limitation of the trial?

    In CS6, you now have the option of selecting multiple paragraph styles where you can break a page. Open the Paragraph Styles panel. From the panel menu, choose Edit All Export Tags. In the dialog, check Split EPUB beside each paragraph style where you want the EPUB file to create a page break (new XHTML file). When exporting, in the Split Document menu, choose Based on Paragraph Style Export Tags.

  • Going from Pages to EPUB using InDesign?

    Is there a guide for going from a Pages document to EPUB using InDesign? The target is a book that is over 105K words for 425 pages.
    I am an absolute beginner with InDesign and I was hoping to more finely control the outcome of EPUB generation by using InDesign rather than outputting from Pages using Export to EPUB. Unfortunately, ID isn't quite as intuitive as I had hoped it would be and I've run up against the wall.
    Do I load each chapter as a separate document and then collect them as a book file? Or can the book be loaded as one document? I've been trying as one document, but I can't it to appear in the main editing window. (It shows up fine in the story editing, but that gets tedious very quickly.)
    Last, while ID creates EPUB files, can it generate a MOBI or AZW file for the Amazon Kindle? I found no references for in concerning ID in the documentation, but thought I'd ask anyway.

    Thanks, Steve!
    I've already been hand-building the CSS & EPUB files. I was just hoping that InDesign would make it easier. Clearly, that's not the case.
    Apple's Pages does a very good job generating an EPUB which only requires a minimal amount of tweaking to the CSS to give it a final polish and further adjustments for e-readers other than an iOS device. Generating the MOBI/AZW for Kindle requires a bunch of jumping through hoops to prepare, which was what I was hoping to avoid.
    A few days to release, I have plenty of time get get the ebooks ready.
    A good heads up for any competent programmers out there—of which I am not—there is a huge market of self-publishing authors in need of a program that can take a RTF, Word or Pages formatted document and smoothly turn it into an EPUB or AZW file.

  • Replace document fonts in InDesign CS6, js

    Hi,
    I need to replace document fonts in InDesign. I get the existing fonts with following script, but not sure how to replace let's say Helvetica Regular with Aria Regular:
    for(var counter = 0; counter < document.fonts.length; counter++){
                //If the <fontFamily> element for this font family does not already exist in the XML, add it.
                if(counter > 0){
    fontFamilyName = document.fonts.item(counter).fontFamily;
                        fontFamilyName.toString().replace(/\s*\(TT\)$/gi, "");
                        alert (fontFamilyName);
                        fontName = document.fonts.item(counter).name;
                alert (fontName);
                fontName = fontName.split("\t");
                fontStyle = fontName[1];
                if(fontStyle == "BoldBold"){
                    fontStyle = "Bold";
                fontName = fontName[0];
                alert (fontName);
    Thank you.
    Yulia

    Yuliart please mark as correct
    Virender,
    I didn't put in the font style because it wasn't asked for but if you are finding both the font and the style as in your example then you don't need to do a separate line for the style
    Just use
    app.findTextPreferences.appliedFont = "Arial\tRegular";
    I.e. the font name seperate from its style by a tab \t
    You only need to use a separate line fontStyle if you are looking for that style irrespective of which font the style is applied to although some might argue to use it for readability.

  • Exporting EPUB from InDesign CC not including line breaks

    I am done with a book and have it formatted the way I want. I am exporting it to EPUB through InDesign CC and previewing it in iBooks and also through Kindle previewer. Everything is fine except for one thing... where I have created page breaks, the exported file is not including them.
    I tried exporting to HTML just to see what it did and there is no line breaks there. I know its proprietary markup ( in kindle ) but I still would like to include them in a few specific places ( to mark seperations of chapters ).
    In kindle this is the tag they say to use: <mbp:pagebreak />
    In iBooks, I have not yet figured out how to create them, I am going to work on that today once I sort out the kindle version.
    Is there any way to force it to include line breaks on export. Or alternatively, I could export to HTML but I am having trouble figuring out how to go back to the EPUB format from there and also it didn't include the fonts, so there was other issues to consider as I have a custom font I was using for the headers that looks really good and matches the font on the book cover as well... so I really want to keep that consistent if possible.
    Are there any tricks or things I can try here to improve on my workflow and do a better job of seperating the chapters ?

    Ok, I hadn't tested the advanced options out in the export menu. It works and does so on both the iBooks and Kindle previewer.. which is good news since that is really important to me to try and find a workflow I can update both of these formats from when I continue to work on my book.
    The only strange part is that on some chapters its adding an extra blank page between the chapter and the next. What is odd is that it only happens on some of them (in the iBook reader only, the kindle previewer isn't doing this)
    I am going to look into this more closely but its not a major deal as I would prefer a little seperation in the chapters anyways, its not really a bad thing. It is just hard to figure out why its doing this.

  • Split Document by Paragraph

    Hi all,
    I need to split a document into multiple documents to create a book.
    I would like to split the document by a certain paragraph style.
    I can´t find a funcionality whitin ID CS4 to do this.
    How can I accomplish this? Scripting?
    Thankx,
    Pedro.

    The solution suggested by Steve Werner surely makes sense and I tried it but it didn't work for me.
    I created a new text frame above the text frame in which the styled TOC appears. In that text frame I typed the title of my TOC which is simply Contents. I created a new paragraph style for the word Contents and selected the Split Document option for that para style.
    In the TOC Style dialog I left the Title field blank and for Style I selected "No Paragraph Style" as shown below. I updated the TOC.
    But when I exported to ePub the TOC header (Contents) does not appear at all and the TOC does not start on its own page.
    My document has three pages immediately preceding the TOC. First page is a paragraph of Acknowledgements, second page is the copyright page, third page is a poem that serves as a foreword, fourth page should be the table of contents. I have successfully used the Para Styles with the Split Document option to allow the first two pages (Acknowledgements and copyright) to be separate pages. But even after trying the workaround suggested above the poem and the TOC are placed on the same page. And I simply can't fathom why the title "Contents" does not appear at all.
    Any suggestions? Is there a limit to how many paragraph styles can use the Split Document option?

  • Split PDF - read-only error

    I am trying to split a PDF document on the top level bookmarks that I have created. I created all of the bookmarks using the file name that I want to output. I go to document, split document, select Top-level bookmarks and output options and select use bookmark names for file names and unselect "Do not overwrite existing files" and then click OK.
    It creates about 12 of my 80-something bookmarks and then tells me that there is an error and it is read-only and will not split the rest of the document. I have saved-as under different names, in different locations and keep getting the same error message. The document that I am splitting is not read only, it is not protected. I have no idea why it won't continue to split the rest of the document. Any suggestions?

    If it happens always at a specific location check if there's something out
    of the ordinary with that bookmark. For example, does it contain any weird
    characters in its name? Is it identical to another bookmark (or even to the
    name of the document itself)?
    I would think the application could handle those situations, but maybe it
    can't...

  • Adding Covers to EPUBS via InDesign?

    Does anyone know how to add covers to Epubs via Indesign? Ultimatly, I want my finished product to be like the Winnie the Pooh book so that ANYONE who downloads the epub will have the cover appearing in the ibook bookcase in the Ipad, nook, and Kindle. I have tried several methods and can't seem to get it.
    Methods I have tried:
    adding the cover via itunes (but this only appears in my account)
    adding the image to the first page of the indesign file (but when exported as epub, only a generic brown cover with title appears)
    Please HELP!

    The current version of InDesign doesn't add a cover for an EPUB file. The workarounds are to add it using a utility like Sigil which can look inside the EPUB, or coding it into the metadata section of the "content.opf" inside the OEBPS file inside the EPUB using a text editor.
    It's a bit too involved for me to explain myself since I'm just learning, but it's described in Elizabeth Castro's eBook "EPUB Straight to the Point" (which you can buy from Amazon or her website (http://www.elizabethcastro.com/epub/)
    It's also well explained by Anne-Marie Concepcion in her new Lynda.com title on converting InDesign files to EPUB an Kindle.

  • Splitting Documents by Bookmark

    I am having trouble splitting documents by bookmark. I continue to get this error message:
    This file may be read-only or another user may have it open. Please save the document with a different dame or in a different folder.
    Other Documents have worked fine but this one has been the issue. I have saved in other files saved as a different name but I continue to get the same error message.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks.

    Sorry for the delay in responding.
    I don't think there is any way to make the default language for the created files.
    You can create a Fix Up that Sets the Language and then Make an Action that will run that Fix Up on all the files in a folder. Fixups are in the Preflight dialog.
    I was able to do it in less thant 10 minutes using these instructions -- and what I already knew about creating an Action.

  • Splitting Document

    Hi all!
    We are trying to customize splitting document for a customer invoice in productive system. In the posting there are some lines with different PC, there are also 2 automatic lines for G/L Acc. (wich have Cost elements in CO) to be splitted by PC.
    We made the following settings:
    - Classify G/L Accounts for Document Splitting:
    G/L Acc (Customer - BS Acc) - Category 02000
    G/L Acc (Taxes on sales - BS Acc) - Category 02000
    G/L Acc (Sales proceeds - P&L) - Category 05100
    G/L Acc (Taxes on sales - P&L) - Category 05100
    - Classify FI Document type for Document Splitting:
    DR (Customer Invoice): Business Transaction 0200, Variant 0001
    - Document Splitting Characteristics for General Ledger
    Profit center (zero balance = X)
    - Document Splitting Characteristics for Controlling
    Profitab.segment
    Document splitting is activated with method 0000000012 and inheritance
    As a result there is only one splitted line - line for Customer (BS Acc)
    Automatic lines are not splitted.
    What is the problem whith it? is it possible to split automatic lines?
    Thank's in advance

    Hi,
    I believe this cant be done using the standard graphical mapping i.e. you have to use Java Mapping.

    I have the Acrobat X Standard, the tool box no longer gives me the options I had before like splitting documents. Please help!

    Was it AA X Std that you had these options in (sorry, I only have Pro)? If it was the trial (that is Pro), it may be that Std does not have to feature. Under XI at the Adobe site, there is a comparison of features between Std and Pro that might give you a hint.
    There is also an option to turn on or hide many tools. For me there is a small icon just above the tools...comment titles. If you select that it give a list of tools you can display. Often, several are not displayed by default. How you lost them is another things, but it is getting them that is the basic question.
