SQL 2008 Express Sp1 Install Fails

I've to install SQL Express 2008 Sp1 On many PC with XP Pro, Vista and other OS inside a specific domain with policies that I can't directly change.
On all that computers fails the installation.
The installation works fine until it try to start the service. At this point it fails but leave all the component installed.
When I try to uninstall, it give me an error.
The folder with all the log files is downloadable here: http://www.deltainformatica.com/public/logs.zip
Thank you for any useful help.

Hello,
SQL Server setup account requires some user rights as explained on the following article. Make sure domain policies are not in effect affecting those user rights:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2000257/en-us
Please read the following post about SQL Server failing to start after applying SP1:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sqlserverfaq/archive/2010/10/27/sql-server-2008-service-fails-to-start-after-applying-service-pack-1.aspx
Try to change SQL Server service account to local system and then try to start the service.
Hope this helps.

    Hi,
You can install SQL server express 2008 on machine having SQL Server 2008 r2 is supported. From what you posted I guess SQL server 2008 r2 is default instance so you need to install SQL server 2008 express SP1 as named instance. Your error matches problem
    mentioned in below thread
    http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/1e8cfab3-4b99-4b4d-82bf-97799dabe34c/failure-when-installing-from-command-prompt-config-file?forum=sqlexpress
If issue is not solved please post complete  log files from location
    %programfiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log\.

  • SQL Server 2008 R2 & 2008 R2 SP1 installation fails in Windows server 2012

    Hi All,
I have a strange issue here. I have a Windows server 2012 VM where i want to deploy SQL 2008 R2 Enterprise edition.
When i Run the setup every thing goes fine and during the installation wizard i get this error " The Folder path Program files contains  invalid characteristics. I get this error 3 - 4 times during the installation wizard and the installation fails.
Below is the screenshot for the same.
So i checked few articles regarding the compatibility issue and found the below article and upgraded my setup to SQL 2008 R2 SP1 using the below article.
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/petersad/archive/2011/07/13/how-to-slipstream-sql-server-2008-r2-and-a-sql-server-2008-r2-service-pack-1-sp1.aspx
Again i still see the same above errors and with that a new error related to a MOF File.
Below are the contents of the error logs. Can some one assist on this issue.

    Hi Alberto,
    Still the same issue.
I installed the SQL 2008 R2 without SP1 and changed the service accounts to system account and  repaired the .NET using the .NET Repair tool
Also changed the installation directory to D:\ Drive this time. Still same issue.

  • Visual Studio prevents SQL 2008 Express installation on win 8.1

I wanted to install SQL Express 2008 on my Win 8.1 desktop. It gives an error indicating that I should install Visual Studio 2008 SP1 first. I tried, but SP1 installation fails. I also tried to remove VS2008 completely but I still get the same fail when
    installing SQL 2008 Express.
Now I cannot even  install SQL Manager 2008, to manage database on SQL server.

    Hello,
You should install SQL Server 2008 Express with SP3 included to make it compatible with Windows 8.1. Please try the following download:

    Hi Brandon,
I am not using self signed certificate. I installed SSL certificate provided by RapidSSL CA. This certificate is installed on my publisher machine ("Printserver"),
web hosting machine ("ANUJVMWIN7") and my subscriber machine as well.
Here are the certificate details which i installed on each machine.

I installed sql 2008 express on 2008R2 but it is not listening on port 1433.
I check configuration for tcp and enabled that already. also started sql browser service.
    any idea?
by default SQL Server Express does not enable Remote Connections.
    Could you check the following:
    1) check that the SQL Express is running (SQL Server Configuration Tool)
    2) log onto the box containing the SQL Server and try to connect with SSMS to the SQL Express instance. Try tcp/ip and/or shared memory to connect.
if you can successfully login check that the SQL Server does allow Remote Connections
    3) Firewall does not block incoming connections
    4) does the DNS server name resolve to the correct ip address of the SQL Server ?

  • Win App Deployment include SQL 2008 Express - Check if any SQL Server version already exist

    Hi there
I have a application that is deploying and installing correctly (Setup and Deployment Project in VS 2008) and has SQL 2008 Express as a pre-requisite. SQL Express installs fine if not found but I don't want it to be installed if any other version of SQL
Server already exists on the target computer. What do I have to adjust in the Bootstrapper package (package.xml or product.xml)  for SQL Express to do this check? Is the change done within the Bootstrapper package? Do I have to create a Custom Action
in my Deployment project for this check? Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks
    Dweezil

    Hi Dweezil,
If you use SQL Express Bootstrapper, you can add the SqlExpressChk.exe package file in the product.xml to check that if SQL Server is already exists.
However, please note that SqlExpressChk.exe is limited to only the default instance name, SQLEXPRESS, it won't detect other named instances. A registry check is required when detecting existing SQL Server with custom instance name.

  • Where is the management Studio for SQL 2008 Express?

Can anyone point me to where I can download the management studio for SQL 2008 Express.
I've downloaded and installed SQL 2008 Express without problem but can't find the management studio.
    Help.

    Paradox1 said:
The 2008 version of the Management Studio is not a stand alone installation and can only be installed as part of the SQL Server 2008 Express with Tools or Advanced installation.
Like many others, I spent countless hours trying to figure out how to install the Management Studio for SQL Server 2008 Express - Advanced installation (same should apply to the w/ Tools version).  What happened in my case was that I installed Visual Studio 2008 Express and during that process a stripped down "Instance" of SQL Server 2008 was installed that did not include the Management Studio.  Through much pain and torture I learned that the Management Studio can only be installed during installation of the first instance. To delete that first instance, you must go to "Add or Remove Programs" and remove "Microsoft SQL Server 2008".  The removal process will only remove one instance at a time and if you have installed more than one instance you need to keep going until all instances have been removed and the application completely disappears from the Add or Remove Programs" dialog.  Note: You do not need to uninstall any of the other SQL Server 2008 applications that also appear in the "Add or Remove Programs" dialog.  Then go back through the install process as follows: Double click on SQLEXPRADV_x86_ENU.exe to load the SQL Server Installation Center and then go to Installation > New SQL Server stand-alone installation.  Then proceed through all of the installation steps until you get to “Feature Selection” and click on “Select All” to toggle on all of the Shared Features, which should include Management Tools - Basic.Continue the process from there and you should be good to go.  Hopefully this will help others to avoid much of the pain that many of us have already experienced.

  • How to make data base link from oracle 11g r2 to microsoft sql 2008 express

I need to make data base link from oracle 11g r2 to microsoft sql 2008 express to make replication between then
    please help me !
I didn't know what is the user and password in the command which create database link

To replicate data you can ude Database Gateway for ODBC or Database Gatewy for MS SQl Server. Please use the search engine of this forum if you ant to get more details about each product.
Some SQl Servers are set up to use Windows authentication only. In this case you won't be able to connect to the SQL Server as Windows authentication isn't supported with the gateways. You have to make sure your SQL server is supporting username and password authentication - a common user is the "sa" user. Regarding the username/password, please get in touch with your SQL Server Admin.

  • SQL Server 2008 Express edition install issue.

Ok, i've been looking around forums for a while now and have not found a post similar to this one or one that offers a solution; so here it goes.
I'm trying to install management studio and in the web platform installer i keep getting this error:
"You must install visual C++ 2008 SP1 before you can install SQL server 2008 Express with tools"
I managed to get the install to "work", but it didn't actually install the studio app. So heres my questions:
Firstly...why? i've installed this before and not had any issues at all, so why the sudden need for C++?
Secondly, does anyone have any insight into my problem and how i cant actually install it?
The only real difference between this install and previous installs is that i'm not running it on vista home premium 64-bit (previously 32-bit).
I tried installing visual C++ express, but that didn't work.
Thank you in advance and for giving up your time to read this.

    Hi,
Based on the error message, your computer has Visual C++ 2008 before you install SQL Server 2008. However, Visual Studio 2008 does not support having Visual Studio 2008 without a service pack. The error message indicates you to install Service Pack 1 for Visual C++.  Please download Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1 from the following link and install it:

  • EVDRE error after adding new member - AFTER installing SQL 2008 R2 SP1 CU2

    Hi guys.
    We're seeing the same error as detailed in Link:[Re: EVDRE error AFTER expanding on a newly added member, sometimes....;
Basically, any new members that are added appear in the SQL tables, but throw out "EVDRE has encountered a problem..." when trying to use them.
Generally, this problem clear up if we leave the member overnight (although why this should be, I have no idea - the system does nothing extra overnight).
We have tried processing the cube, full processing of the application and even a server reboot, all to no avail.
However, the generally accepted fix for this is to upgrade SQL 2008 R2 to SP1 CU2 (SQL 10.50.2772)
This system was patched to that level before BPC was ever installed, precisely to avoid this problem.
This is not the first time that we have seen this behaviour.
I have experienced it in one other environment, which I keep meaning to rebuild.
These installations are in completely different environments.  The only similarities are that they both use Windows Server 2008 R2 and SQL 2008 R2.
The issue only started to appear in this second environment today (we have 3 other environments with the same software version that do not have the problem).
It had been assumed before today that the first problematic environment might need a rebuild due to this issue being caused by some other factor.
However, this is now far too coincidental to be the case.
Has anyone seen similar issues even after patching to v10.50.2772, or does anyone have any suggestions at all.
I could really do with a quick win on this one.
    Thanks

    Hi,
i've had the same issue in the same days. I confirm that the issue appear after adding any member and it's clear overnight.
    My system is different:
Windows Server 2008 NT 6.0 <X64> (Build 6002: Service Pack 2) Enterprise Edition
    and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Edition (SP1) - 10.0.2841.0 (X64)
The issue appears in the last months.
It's occurs only on specific machine (always the same client), in the same moment other machines can open the same input schedule and expand without problem.
I've noted also that when I cancel the added member the issue disappear, the same behaviour with APShell.
I have the same configuration on development and test environment, same version of O.S. and SQL server, but there I don't have problem. The only difference is that these two environments are single server (application and DB server on the same machine) Instead, the production environment is multiserver (2 application server + DB server).
Maybe there is a service that take a long time for sincronization (it's triggered in the night?).
Could you verify if on some machine the evdre works fine and and that when you delete the  added member evdre starts to work?
    Kind regards
    Roberto

    Appreciate your suggestion Dave,
Any idea what could be cause of this failure.?Do you see anything from the CBS logs.
This server attached with SNAP drive luns,is there something or SQL application preventing this installation ?
After reboot it revert the installation...it shows "Failure config service pack..reverting changes,do not not turn off your computer".
Surprisingly it happens both of our SQL data base server.
Do you think Increasing MaxNumFilters to
    14 shall work ?

  • SQL 2008 R2 SP1 Cluster SAN Migration

    Dears,
I am doubting about procedure and steps that must be followed while doing SAN Migration for my cluster 2008 R2 SP1 SQL.
For me, I already did cluster Quorum SAN Migration, but I am doubting about all remaining steps such:
Some one told me about disk signatures, what should I do for this?
What are steps for MSDTC migration?
    How to Migrate SQL Instance?
What about Master and other system databases?

What about below commands: FOR WHAT IT IS NEEDED?

MODIFY FILE ( NAME = MSDBData,
    FILENAME = '
    H:\MSSQL10_50.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA\

SELECT name, physical_name AS CurrentLocation, state_desc

    MODIFY FILE ( NAME =
    modellog,
    FILENAME = '
    H:\MSSQL10_50.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA\
    modellog.ldf' )
Please help on this coz I am afraid about my information!

Some one told me about disk signatures, what should I do for this?
If you can present in disks from both SANs at the same time then this shouldn't be an issue. At a high-level you can add the new disks in and remove the old ones from the cluster when you're finished with them. The disks are just seen as new disks...not swapped
    ones.
What are steps for MSDTC migration?
    - Personally I've simply deleted and re-created the MSDTC, there might be a nicer way to do this, but re-creating it works.
    How to Migrate SQL Instance?
    - You mean elements that are on a SAN attached drive that aren't part of the cluster? You can stop the instance and copy the files (use
xcopy to preserve permissions), Then swap the drive letters around & restart the instance.
What about Master and other system databases?
    For system databases I would
    - bring the new disk into the cluster, give it a temporary drive letter, make sure sql server has a dependency on it (look at how the current drives are setup)
    - stop the services
    - copy the folders/files to the new drive using xcopy preserving permissions
    - give the current drive an unused drive letter (via cluster manager)
change the new drive letter to match the original drive (via cluster manager)
    - remove the old drive (remove dependencies before doing this)
    - bring the server online
What about Apps Database, logs, and temps?
-You can do this 'online' while the sql server is running, just bring the new disk into the cluster and following the Microsoft recommended approach outlined
    here
What about below commands: FOR WHAT IT IS NEEDED?
    - that's for msdb and model, you'll have already handled those databases with the other system dbs.

    Hello,
Try to download the SQL Server media again. Uninstall any component installed and reinstall SQL Server again.
Please make sure you are running SQL Server setup with Run as Administrator option.
Download Process Monitor and run it to make sure there are no access denied errors accessing the Registry.
