SQL Commands feature in Application

Hi All,
Can i have sql commands type feature in my custom application? The requirement is users does not have access to TOAD or SQL Developer to query anything, so i want sql command type feature in my application.
If this can be done let me know ASAP.
The users wont be having access to developer tool as well.
Appreciate your response.
Regards,
Prem N

Hi Prem,
probably the easiest way to achieve this would be to give users access to Apex but only give them SQL Workshop Access as opposed to full developer access.
To build an adhoc query tool is probably re-inventing the wheel, and if not done properly can lead to serious security problems.
I'm not sure of your user requirements, but from my experience, users who ask for adhoc query ability rarely need it when you delve deeper into their requirements. First of all they usually don't have the skills to write anything more than the simplest queries so you find yourself writing a set of queries for them which they can then use. You then find yourself encapsulating these queries in a metadata layer as views and putting in as much effort as you would if you simply created a set of interactive reports, and put these in an application.
My suggestion is to look into the features of interactive reports and you may find these will give your users the flexibility they need.

  • SQL Command problem in Application Express 3.2.0.00.27

    To Oracle Application Express Development Team,
    Yesterday I installed Oracle Application Express 3.2.0.00.27.
    While doing my r&d, I came across one problem in SQL Command.
    For example I wanted to run sql "select * from tab"
    When I checked "Autocommit" checkbox it worked fine.
    But when I unchecked the "Autocommit" checkbox it gave me following error:
    ORA-01003: no statement parsed

  • Problem adding data to the CRM /Saas application by running SQL commands

    Hello,
    I've been following the CRM/ Saas tutorial:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/pub/articles/bobrowski-saas.html
    and I tried to run the SQL commands in the tutorial to populate the TENANTS, CUSTOMERS, TENANT_COLUMNS, and USERS tables and keep on getting an "ORA-00911: invalid character" error.
    I could use the Object Browser page to do this but would like to know how to do this by running a SQL command.
    Has anyone else encountered this problem when trying to populate the tables in the CRM application?
    Thanks
    Linda

    Hello,
    Are you sure you copied it correctly?
    If you try to run 1 create statement, does that work?
    For ex.
    -- USERS
    INSERT INTO users (username, tenant_id)
    VALUES ('MIKE',1);
    INSERT INTO users (username, tenant_id)
    VALUES ('JOE',2);
    COMMIT;
    Does that work? I don't see that many special characters...
    What you may try to do is to change the ; by a /
    for ex.:
    INSERT INTO users (username, tenant_id)
    VALUES ('MIKE',1)
    INSERT INTO users (username, tenant_id)
    VALUES ('JOE',2)

  • Code block works in SQL Command Processor but not in application

    Hello forum,
    Been struggling with this for a few days without success:
    I have a form with a popup LOV called P6_POPUP, a file browse item called P6_BROWSE, a SUBMIT button, and a Process with the following code:
    declare
    q_image_id number;
    begin
    select host_family_photos_seq.nextval into q_image_id from dual;
    insert into host_family_photos (image_id, file_object_id, image_name)
    select q_image_id, id, filename
    from htmldb_application_files where filename = :P6_BROWSE;
    update host_family set image_id = q_image_id where family_name = :P6_POPUP;
    end;
    The Process Point is set to On Submit after Computations and Validations and When Button Pressed is set to the Submit button.
    When I run the page the file is imported into HTMLDB_APPLICATION_FILES
    but the insert and update do not occur.
    The URL header after submitting is as follows:
    http://127.0.0.1:8080/apex/f?p=115:1:480837828458787::NO:::&success_msg=Photo%20Imported%2FB87C5A54684B0DF005D09D0DFE6E98D6%2F
    However if I run the above code in the APEX SQL Command window and supply the required variables it works every time - most confusing.
    Not sure what to try from here.
    thanks for your time,
    Brett

    Scott:
    I always thought that the File Browse item maps to the NAME column in the view (below) and that is guaranteed to be unique. The NAME column seems to have a system-generated "F1234" id embedded in it (to guarantee uniqueness, I thought).
    In other words, when we put a File Browse item on the page, submitting the page uploads the file into the HTMLDB_APPLICATION_FILES table and the way to access that record (to copy/move it into our own custom table) is by doing
    from htmldb_application_files

    I have an interest in executing a query in my bean method. I've done some research and i still got a code but it can't find the method that the method requires so i tried to added the query in my AppModule and i've added my method as a data control but how can i access it and modify it in my bean method?
    The page with the code that doesn't find the method: http://jjzheng.blogspot.pt/2010/11/run-single-query-in-application-module.html

    The page that creates my method as a data control: http://amit-adf-work.blogspot.pt/2013/09/how-to-execute-sql-using-adf-application.html
    Is any of this the right way? How can i execute a SQL Command in my bean class?

    // get an Action or MethodAction
    OperationBinding method = bindings.getOperationBinding("YourMethodAction");

  • How to use Java with PL/SQL commands to send an email with attachment

    Apologizes in advance if this is the wrong place to ask the question.
    I need to use Java with PL/SQL commands to send an email with attachment. My java application runs from the command line and does some magic to gather info from an Oracle 11g db. If the DB has sendmail configured, I'd like to send the results of the data gathering as an attachment to the email addresses. I'm not sure how to do this. I've been reading up on on PL/SQL can send email with UTL_SMTP - with attachments. I'm just not sure how to translate that into being triggered by my Java application. Any suggestions or pointers on what I should read would be appreciated.
    Background - I've been programming in Java for 10+ years, but this is my first time using databases. I also have been on these forums for a long time, but lost my profile when it was switched to Oracle.
    Thanks for all help.

    user13726880 wrote:
    The original requirements were put together and given to me, an Oracle newbie. They expected the Java app to use something intrinsic to Oracle and Unix sendmail. To solve my problem, I use a JDBC connection to run some SQL commands. I take that data, format it and send the results by email to the user. By default the requirement is to send it as an HTML attachment using Unix 'sendmail'. So I do that using Runtime exec. I have also added JavaMail functionality as an alternative to sendmail. It works great and as expected.Sounds like a reasonable solution.
    Note however that PL/SQL itself can send email. And PL/SQL can call unix sendmail too.
    However myself I would have done it in java with JavaMail.

  • SQL Command Object

    We are in the process of migrating reports from SSRS to Crystal 2011.
    In SSRS we are able to paste complex SQL into reports as the data source for the report (e.g. multiple CTE's, correlated subqueries, temp tables, etc).
    It appears that we can accomplish the same thing using Crystal command objects, but the reports created have to be distributed as stand-alone rpt files to customers. In that case the reports that use sql commands return an error that the command object does not exist. It seems the command object exists in the data connection (which is generated at run-time in the host application) and not in the rpt file itself.
    Is it possible to somehow use an sql query as the data source in the report in a manner that is independent of the data connection?
    Thanks

    Hi,
    That's interesting, the query shouldn't be stored in the data connection.  It should be saved inside the rpt as part of the SQL Query.
    How are you distributing the reports?
    How is your application connecting the reports to the database?
    As long as the reports logon to the tables and objects used in the SQL Command exist on the database it should run without a problem.
    As a test, open the report in Crystal and go to Database | Show SQL Query.  You should see your SQL Command there.  Copy and paste the SQL into your production database and see if it runs.
    Good luck,
    Brian

    Hi,
    All of theose SQL*Plus features can be duplicated in Oracle SQL. For example, "GROUP BY ... ROLLUP" can give you an minimum, maximum and total for each city.
    You can create a view that looks exactly like the SQL*Plus output (for example, the city column with values like 'New York', NULL, '**********', and 'minimum'), if you really need to. CASE is very useful for things like this, as are some analytic functions. (E.g., ROW_NUMBER can help in telling which is the first row for each city.)
    To make such a view, you may find it convenient to do a UNION of two queries:
    (1) One that produces one row per employee
    (2) One that produces a fixed number of rows (four, to get the results you posted) per city

  • JDBC: send batch of SQL commands as anonymous PL/SQL block

    Hi All,
    I did a little measurement to see if I can improve jdbc
    applications by batching dissimilar SQL commands into one
    anonymous PL/SQL block and execute it once. To my surprise, for
    a batch of 5 SQL commands, it take 60% more time than execute
    each of the 5 SQL commands separately.
    The same JDBC code, using similar SQL text batching, running
    against Sybase or MSSQL shows 60%-300% improvement.
    Is there any other way to batch dynamic dissimilar SQL commands
    in Oracle other than using anonymous PL/SQL block? Here is an
    example of how the "text-batching" PL/SQL block looks like:
    "begin insert into testtab1(col1, col2) values(1, 'row1');
    insert into testtab2(col1, col2) values(100, 1);....; end;"

  • How to pass a multiple value parameter to SQL Command?

    Hi,
    I created a SQL Command with parameter.  But, I need the parameter to be set as multiple value.  After creating the SQL Command and it's parameter under the Database Expert, I went to Field Explorer --->  Parameter Fields and found the parameter that I had created for the SQL Command.  But when I wanted to edit the parameter to make it a multiple value parameter, the multiple value option was fix grayed as single parameter and I couldn't change it to multiple parameter.  Is there any way that I can set a parameter that is attached to SQL Command as multiple value rather than single value?  Thanks.
    Cheers,

    Al,
    That's a feature that, apparently, is only available in CR 2008.  If you are using CR 2008, use this link to see how to do it.

    Hi <please supply your name>,
    SQL Developer Worksheet is not available from the command line.
    The BRIDGE command is only supported in the Worksheet.
    Its an interesting idea though. Are you trying to script data move from a non Oracle database to an Oracle database using the BRIDGE command?
    The BRIDGE command was initially done to allow a simple data move from a non Oracle database to Oracle. We then build the "Copy to Oracle" feature out of it.
    http://dermotoneill.blogspot.com/2010/11/cross-database-bridge-statement.html
    http://dermotoneill.blogspot.com/2010/11/copy-to-oracle.html
    Since the BRIDGE command references connection names, which have to be defined in UI of SQL Developer any solution to run this on the command line would have to work this out.
    There are number of ways you can do this without using the BRIDGE command.
    1) Perform a capture/convert of your non Oracle database and then generate the "offline" data move scripts.
    Theses scripts use SQL*Loader and your non Oracle database tool (Ex: Sybase BCP).
    These are run from the command line and can be modified ....
    2) Use a database link from your Oracle database to your non Oracle database and reference /query the data that way.
    I would interested to hear your thoughts.

    Hi drvijayy2k2 ,
    Thanks for replying.
    I used your code in my application and this is the problem i am facing now. The query is getting executed but its not taking the value from the database because of the Null Rev Id that is getting inputted into queryString. I have given only part_desc as the search criteria. If i just search using part description , commenting the rev_id part , i am able to retrieve the result from the database.
    I have to code in a way using which i can search using either rev_id or part_desc , or using both at the same time.
    Part Number In success:
    Rev Number In serchsuccess:
    part desc In seachsuccess: cat
    Keyword In sesuccess: ----
    Design style In sesuccess: ----
    Config In sesuccess: ----
    charac In sesuccess: ----
    queryString in sesuccess: select * from PART
    queryString in sesuccess: select * from PART where REV_ID= '' and OBJ_DESC= 'cat'
    driver manager
    connection established
    Query executed

  • COPY command not working SQL Commands editor

    Hi All,
    I want to have a simple 'one-button-solution' for copying few tables from an external DB into the database where my Apex application is running.
    When I issue the following from the sqlplus command line I get the following output:
    SQL> COPY FROM schema/password@tnsnames_sid TO schema/password@tnsnames_sid REPLACE TABLE_TEST USING select * from TABLE_FOREIGN;
    Array fetch/bind size is 15. (arraysize is 15)
    Will commit when done. (copycommit is 0)
    Maximum long size is 80. (long is 80)
    Table TABLE_TEST dropped.
    Table TABLE_TEST created.
    2 rows selected from schema@tnsnames_sid.
    2 rows inserted into TABLE_TEST.
    2 rows committed into TABLE_TEST at schema@tnsnames_sid.
    SQL>
    However, if I try exactly the same command from within the Apex 'SQL Commands' editor, I get the following error message:
    ORA-00900: invalid SQL statement
    NOTE that the reason I use COPY command is to overcome problems with LONG datatype which arise when doing simply CREATE TABLE AS.... with dblink.
    In anycase, how can I make this work from within the 'SQL Commands' editor (and therefore in a button process).
    Regards,
    Pawel.

    Hi Harman,
    yes, this is a known issue.
    It's fixed with NW04 SPS 13.
