SQL Connection stays idle/sleeping

Post Author: gotProblems
CA Forum: Data Connectivity and SQL
We have an ASP.Net 1.1 web application that keeps eating up database connections in SQL Server 2000 when it calls a Crystal Reports 9 report and does an export.  The background is as follows.  The ASP.Net code is creating a ReportDocument Object and loading a Crystal Report (.rpt) file.  The logon to all reports and subreports is then done. Then the parameters are passed to the report and the export options are set.  In our case we are exporting to a disk file as HTML. The export is run. The ReportDocument is then closed and then "dispose"d.  Then all the Crystal Report objects are set to nothing.  Then the file on the disk is retrieved and sent to the response object to complete the page's processing.
When the report has been run through the application a connection is opened to the DB by Crystal Reports (I know this because it uses a specific user).  After the report has been exported and sent to the client the connection goes to the "Sleeping" mode.  This connection remains there indefinitely it seems and more stack up when the report is called another time.  They eventually get to be too many on the database server and it will either return an Out of Memory or Server Timeout error to the client when an attempt is made to run the report.  The only thing that can be done at this point is restart IIS.  All the sleeping connections for that user are then cleared from SQL.
Why is IIS keeping Crystal Report in memory? Has anyone come across this before?  Can anyone tell what needs to happen?
Thanks.

Thanks for the response David.
I did the search as suggested and found a useful description at https://supportforums.cisco.com/docs/DOC-1390. After reading it I redid my PG configuration in Configuration Manager. I had the wrong Peripheral ID. Once that was fixed my ctisvr process became ACTIVE. I also found out I had to manually install the JTAPI client as well. Once that was done I got a jtapigw process which I did not have before. It looks like my PIM is working although it still shows a status of IDLE for it and the "jtapigw - jgw1" process. Looking at the process window though I see Observers being set up for the 2 phones we have hooked up to the CM so it must be communicating.
Thanks again for the help.

  • Solved: message "You are not connected to the Internet" after idle sleep

    Summary: What worked for me was to turn off IPv4 and IPv6 on my unused interface.
    The problem was that after my computer had been in sleep mode, Safari would say:
    "You are not connected to the Internet."
    or "softwareupdate -l" would say:
    "This computer’s Internet connection appears to be offline."
    Yet Firefox worked OK and traceroute also showed the connection was fine.
    Digging deeper (though only later, after I found the command), "scutil -r" indicated a problem with DNS lookup:
    $ scutil -r developer.apple.com
    Not Reachable
    $ scutil -r 17.254.2.129
    Reachable
    I'm using 10.6.6 on a Mini (model Macmini1,1), which has a wired ethernet connection on en0 and an AirPort on en1. I use the wired connection, but I also configured the AirPort just because, and then turned it off in the network preferences. I use a static (manually-configured) IPv4 address on en0 and DHCP on en1 (when it's up, which is only for experimenting). I don't use IPv6 as such, though I've left it enabled.
    I was initially confused, thinking the problem was intermittent, though it's not. I tended to assume that because the display had gone into standby the computer must be sleeping, without checking that the power light was dimming and brightening, indicating sleep mode. Later I found the "pmset -g" command to display the power management settings. Among the settings is:
    ttyskeepawake 1
    This means that if I had a shell session open in Terminal, which I did quite often when investigating the problem, the computer put itself into idle sleep later than if I didn't have the session open. The times in Energy Saver settings in System Preferences seem not to be very accurate anyway. For instance, with the default computer sleep and display sleep settings of 10 minutes and a shell session open, I've seen it take 17m25s for the display to blank and a further 14m16s for the computer to sleep, for a total of 31m41s.
    The problem only occurs after an idle wait. It doesn't occur after a software sleep (entered from the Sleep entry in the Apple menu or using the keyboard shortcut) or after pressing the power button momentarily.
    One way I found to fix the problem was to turn the AirPort on and then off again through Network Preferences (or the menu bar item). Later I found that disconnecting and reconnecting the ethernet cable also fixed the problem. I hoped to find a better way.
    What led me to this halfway house solution was noticing that if I turned the AirPort on and then off again, entries for en1 still remained in the routing table. These entries were for IPv6 link-local and multicast networks, as in this edited output from "netstat -nr":
    Internet6:
    Destination Gateway Flags Netif Expire
    ::1 ::1 UH lo0
    fe80::%lo0/64 fe80::1%lo0 Uc lo0
    fe80::1%lo0 link#1 UHL lo0
    fe80::%en0/64 link#4 UC en0
    fe80::216:cbff:fexx:xxxx%en0 0:16:cb:xx:xx:xx UHL lo0
    fe80::%en1/64 link#6 UC en1
    ff01::/32 ::1 Um lo0
    ff02::/32 ::1 UmC lo0
    ff02::/32 link#4 UmC en0
    ff02::/32 link#6 UmC en1
    Even with the AirPort switched off, ifconfig showed it as being up:
    en1: flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,SMART,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
    ether 00:17:f2:xx:xx:xx
    media: autoselect (<unknown type>)
    status: inactive
    I don't know if these observations are relevant, but anyway they led me to the solution (well, workaround). The way I finally fixed the problem was as follows.
    1. Create a new location in Network Preferences. (This isn't strictly necessary, but it allowed me to keep the AirPort configuration (including my wireless password) intact in the default Automatic location.)
    * Click on the Location pull-down
    * Click Edit Locations...
    * Click +
    * Enter new location name (I called mine Wired-static)
    2. Configure the Ethernet interface with its static address. (If using DHCP, I'd have skipped this step as DHCP is the default.)
    3. Go to the AirPort configuration (even though it's shown as Off).
    * Click on Advanced
    * Click on TCP/IP
    * Select Off for both IPv4 and IPv6
    4. After clicking Apply in Network Preferences, a new "Location" item appears in the Apple menu between "Dock" and "Recent Items". Select the new location. This setting sticks across boots.
    I hope this helps anyone else in a similar situation. Maybe if you use wireless it would help to turn off IPv4 and IPv6 on the Ethernet interface?

    Try:
    - A reset. Nothing is lost
    Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
    least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router
    - Reset Network Settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - DId the iPod ever successfully connect to the network?
    - Does the iPod successfully connect to other networks?
    - Do other devices successfully connect with your network?

  • Macbook Pro wont stay in sleep mode and will restart at shutdown.

    Hi,
    My macbook pro won't "stay" in sleep mode for more than 2 seconds and wakes up. It also will restart automatically every time i shut it down.
    I tried resetting PRAM. SMC. No good.
    I am pasting the system log below for both the occasions.

  • MacBook Pro OSX 10.6 drops Wi-Fi connection when idle/asleep.

    My MacBook Pro OSX 10.6 has begun to lose Wi-Fi connection when idle. I can't re-connect unless I shut down computer and re-start. Worse, the system appears to lock up--I can't force quit, must press the power button to shut down. This problem occurs wherever I am using my laptop, not just with one particular Wi-Fi network.

    I have been having the same issue for the last two weeks. No real indication as to why it ever began other than I had turned off my router and Airport Extreme Base Station off for a weekend while I was away from my place.
    iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, all have no issues at all with my Airport Extreme Base Station. Can stay connected throughout my living room, bathroom, bedroom, no issues whatsoever.
    My 5 month old MacBook Pro 2.66 GHz Core i7 Airport is sometimes perfect, able to connect, DHCP, and browse without issue. Then, for no reason, I won't be able to join my wireless network, or when I can join, I can't pick up an IP address. And then it will connect, pick up and IP, and then it won't browse. No real rhyme or reason to when this will happen, or when it works.
    I thought that it was an issue with my MacBook Pro, but then my sister visited with her brand new MacBook Pro 2.26 Intel Core 2 Duo, and while a month ago she was able to connect, DHCP, and browse without issue, this weekend she had all of the same issues I was having.
    My XBOX 360 and MacBook Pro have absolutely no issues with the wired connection. Only my WAN seems to have this issue.
    Did you ever find anything more to this?

  • My IPOD classic 6 will no longer stay in sleep mode. It's less than 2 years old

    My IPOD classic 6th generation will no longer stay in sleep mode and it is less then 2 years old. It is running the battery down because of this. Does anybody know how to fix this issue? I have use the hold button when I put it in sleep mode. I have already restored my IPOD and that only worked temporarily. I've charged my battery fully and synced my IPOD and reset to the original settings my IPOD, but none of them worked.

    Reset your iPod.
    Turn the Hold switch on, then off again and then press-and-hold the Menu and Select (centre) buttons at the same time for at least ten seconds. During this time, you should see the Apple logo appear on the iPod. After a while (it could take up to four minutes) the iPod should display the Main Menu screen and it will be ready to go.
    Then see if the iPod sleeps correctly. If it doesn't, you may need to Restore the iPod. To do that, connect it to your iTunes Library and by looking at the iPod through iTunes, you will see the Restore button.
    Be aware that a Restore will remove all the content from your iPod and (if you if you use Sync to manage your iPod) put back only what is in your Library. If you use Manually Manage, then you will have to manually add back everything that you want to be on the iPod.
    If neither of these steps cures the issue, that may suggest a hardware problem.

  • TS3402 iMac with OS X 10.8.4 will not stay in sleep mode.

    After installing latest OS updates, 10.8.4,  we cannot get our iMac to stay in sleep mode.  Energy saving settings have computer sleep and display sleep set to15 minutes, put hard disks to sleep when possible and allow power button to put to sleep are selected.  Wake for network is not selected.  Also allow bluetooth devices to wake computer is not selected. We are using Time Machine using a USB connected seagate disk, USB connected keyboard and bluetooth mouse.  Sleep mode worked before applying latest OS update to 10.8.4 level, which was the only recent change. Now, if put to sleep, monitor goes black for a few seconds then back on.  Appears that something that I haven't identified wakes it up.

    The solution was found in another post.  The suggestion made by marks33 says:
    My computer would not stay in sleep mode either since update Mac OS 10.8.4 and I tried resetting the SMC.
    Resetting SMC:
    Shut down the computer
    Unplug the power cord and ALL peripherals (mouse, keyboard + ethernet cable also)
    Wait 20 seconds
    Attach power cable and wait another 10 seconds
    Press power button
    Attach all other cables after desktop appears.
    Try it if you haven't already. It cured the sleep issue on my iMac.

    Hi,

    Connected to an idle instance.
    SQL

    It's not a SQL*Plus bug but a Oracle feature: when you try to connect to a local Oracle instance Oracle computes the shared memory key (used by the instance SGA) using ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID: if you add a character to ORACLE_HOME, the shared memory key will be different and Oracle does not find the instance and says "connected to an idle instance".

  • MySQL: first connection after idle awhile is very slow

    Hello,
    The login process for my site is always very slow (45s) for the first request. Once the first login has completed and I can logout and login with different uid/pwd and it responds very quickly (1-2seconds)
    If the site is idle for awhile and then attempt a login, it is again 45s for the first login.
    This only occurs for one my sites, the others work fine.
    Any ideas? I feel like I'm shooting in the dark to find an answer.
    Thanks in advance!

    Sorry, I see now my post was confusing regarding the login.
    I mean the website's login process, for a registered user to access the site.
    It's during that process that this problem seems to occur.
    The user types in their login credentials and clicks 'submit'. The Login script checks the connection pool for an available connection and gets one if it is available. Otherwise, it will create a new direct connection. Then it executes the Login SQL, closes the statement and result set and returns the connection the pool (if applicable).
    What is confusing is that everything works so fast after this initial transaction with the long delay has completed.
    I'm wondering if perhaps the connection go idle or close after awhile and when I test them it sits on a long timeout then recreates the connections in the pool.
    I test the connection with conn.setAutoCommit( true );     and if I don't catch an SQLException I expect everything to be ok.
    I will look into your comments regarding things being swapped out, dummy queries.
    Thanks

    Hi fx3bb,
    When did this problem start? Have you made any software/ hardware changes to your system prior to this issue?
    Here is the HP product support site for your system. Your system was introduced in 2009 and shipped with Win 7.
    Sleep issue problems are usually driver/ sleep settings issues.
    Can you provide more detail? Generally, USB drivers, audio drivers, or graphics drivers cause wake problems.

  • Idle sleep problems

    Apologies I know there have been 1000's of posts about this but I think I have been through all of them and I cannot workout why my iMac will not sleep when idle.
    I've tried SMC re-sets, PMU re-sets, I've setup a clean user, run in safe mode, disconnected every peripheral and still it will not sleep when left idle.
    I've even been to the extent of writing a load of IOKit based code to hook in callbacks to the power notifications from the kernel and I never see anything.
    Just to be clear, if I tell the machine to sleep from the Apple menu it does and it stays in sleep mode until I wake it.
    I think this started after 10.6.4 came out but I cannot be sure.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Steve

    Steve,
    Thanks for the reply!
    That's some good info in the KB...but info that I've tried, except 'new user acct'. My problem is it's intermittent. EG, upon auto wake this morning it din go to sleep after 10 mins, per default setting. I did have an iCal 'reminder' on the screen, but that shouldn't be the culprit as I've had auto-sleep occur even with a reminder on the desktop. I responded to the reminder, opened A.Monitor and went and got a cup of coffee....etc. When I came back in about 12-13 mins the puter was asleep! (BTW, I've not had any problems with monitor sleep) Yesterday it was not auto-sleeping and I did an SMC reset, and it worked fine the rest of the day...until this moring.
    So, it's intermittent. What I see persistently in A.Monitor is Dock and Dashboard Client. Could something like WeatherBug widget be the culprit? That's my main question: how to know which process out of many is the culprit; I mean I have a pretty long list of processes.
    I guess I'll quit those 3-4 processes (Dock and WeatherBug) the next time I have the problem and see if that helps. And, I'll try the new user acct approach.
    Thanks again,
    Cheers to you too
    Dave

  • Mac mini does not stay in sleep mode

    Another sleep issue here: Mac mini (late 2012) will not remain in sleep mode since updating to OSX 10.8.5, I had no problem with 10.8.4. System log seems to indicate that the USB controller is sending a wake signal (lists all USB contoller ports as possible source). I have reset the NVRAM to no effect. Any suggestions how to proceed. I am not ready to update to Mavericks yet, which may or may not solve problem. I would like to sort this out if possible in 10.8.5.

    Look down towards the bottom of > Why your Mac might not sleep or stay in sleep mode
    Are a keyboard and mouse connected and working correctly?
    Do you have any other external USB or FireWire devices connected? Try removing or disconnecting them one by one, when not in use, taking care to dismount any that are storage devices before disconnecting them.

  • SQL Connections remain open after Crystal Report closes

    I am wirting an interface to use the crystal report viewer to print reports, connecting to a Progress Open Edge 10.1B database.  From our application we declare the application, report, exportoptions and connectionproperties objects and pass these to the crystal reports viewer.  Once the report is printed we release the objects and set their variables for null.  However we are finding that the SQL connection to the database is remaining connected and we can only release the connection by manually going in a disconnecting.
    I have read in forums that people use .dispose or .close to release the connection, however we do not have access to these methods as we do not use .NET.  Are there any methods we can use to disconnect these sql connections?

    Hi Dean,
    Moved to the Legacy Application forums. Likely using the RDC as your report engine.
    You should still be able to close and dispose of the report objects. They are not specific to .NET.
    In VB it would look something like these lines::
        crReport.Close
        Set CrystalActiveXReportViewer1.ReportSource = Nothing
        Set crReport = Nothing
    Once the report is closed it should disconnect from the DB. If you close the application does that disconnect?
    Have you looked on 4GL's site for info on how to?
    Thank you
    Don

  • Unable to load the necessary SQL connectivity library

    I am installing an older (non-Microsoft) program (32bit) that manages mail online and it requires an access to SQL Server to create database to complete installation. I am installing it on Windows Server 2003 standard. This program
    I am installing recommends SQL Server 2000. We are now running SQL Server 2005 on a separate server. For connectivity, I installed SQL server 2005 tools (full install) on the same 2003 server as the program so that this program could manage to locate
    SQL server 2005 and connect to it in order to create necessary tables and complete the installation. I already manually created the database for this program on SQL Server 2005. I created ODBC SQL Server connection string (User DSN). However, during
    installation, I am getting the following error message:
    ERROR: Setup is unable to load the necessary SQL connectivity library. This indicates that the proper client-side SQL utilities are not installed on your system. Setup cannot continue.
    Could this error be SQL Server version specific and the program only likes SQL 2000 client tools and not 2005? Are there major differences between libraries versions? Should there be something else configured? What am I missing? Thanks in advance.

    ERROR: Setup is unable to load the necessary SQL connectivity library. This indicates that the proper client-side SQL utilities are not installed on your system. Setup cannot continue.
    Could this error be SQL Server version specific and the program only likes SQL 2000

    Tools are tools, not a connectivity library and by the error message the right connectivity library is missing. Ask the software vendor which one is required or look it up on the other machine, where the application works.

  • FTP problem: connection going idle or missing; takes a minute to refresh

    Hi, i hope i explain myself, please forgive me my lack of tech-language and if i'm redundant:
    In my office we got a G5 dual that we turn into a server (Mac OS Server 10.5.7) for a couple of websites (for external use). I need this guys to have FTP access for some file sharing. Server is up, websites and databases are running fine, remote administration in local and external network is flawless, everything seems fine, except for the FTP: When i connect with cyberduck or any other FTP app, the authentication is done quickly but then, the connection goes idle (like it didn't exists) so the folder listing takes about a minute. Then, as soon as you get the listing, if you try to put something (i.e, a big file of 50mb, using the local network), the app makes a quick login but then it goes idle again (same, about a minute) and when the connections appears, the transfer goes really fast, after the transfers ends connection goes idle again a minute before managing the folder listing. I know that the connection "goes idle" or "disappears" because i started using little snitch to take a look at it. It appears like if the ftp app wasn´t even trying to connect, then suddenly, it´s there and connects/transfers. Every operation takes this minute to get going. If i try it with a browser, well, it times out. This is happening in both, local and external connection. But every other service is working cool.
    Can you give me any ideas about this matter?

    Ok, rather than going for the most problematic protocols known to modern networking, try with something simple.
    Don't test with ftp, test with sftp.
    I would initially suspect you're running into issues with firewalls here; beyond transmitting your credentials in cleartext, the design of ftp is inherently extremely allergic to firewalls, and particularly to transfers over connections that involve both local and remote firewalls.
    ftp is funky here in that it needs two connections between the client and the server, and the second connection tends to get blocked. An ftp active-mode connection has a back-connect from the ftp server to an ephemeral port on the client; traversing firewalls from server to client. An ftp passive-mode connection has a forward connection; a second parallel connection from the client to a specified (usually) ephemeral port on the ftp server; traversing the firewalls.
    Ignoring explicit transfer-mode selection, various clients can (transparently) try to switch between active and passive, too.
    My preferred approach is to avoid ftp. At all. Use sftp. sftp is far easier to punch through firewalls. And sftp doesn't transmit your username and password in cleartext, for that matter.
    The other part of this effort is around ensuring proper file protections and ownership in the web server directories. The web-facing file ownership should be user:www (often root:www) and the www user (the web server) should be able to read its web files, but (in general) should not be able to write to the web files or directories. This is defensive.
