Oracle instance is running but sqlplus "/as sysdba" says connected to idle.

Hi,
Oracle RAC is running(started the RAC using "srvctl start database -d hacmp") but when i am trying to connect to database using sqlplus "/as sysdba" it says "connected to idle instance".
Any idea what could be the issue here?
I have ORACLE_SID exported.

Connected to an idle instance.
SQL

It's not a SQL*Plus bug but a Oracle feature: when you try to connect to a local Oracle instance Oracle computes the shared memory key (used by the instance SGA) using ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID: if you add a character to ORACLE_HOME, the shared memory key will be different and Oracle does not find the instance and says "connected to an idle instance".

  • Update available for firefox 3.6.12 but won't install;says connection timed out

I've had firefox 3.6.12 for a couple of months. it says an upgrade is available, but won't install. says connection timed out. I tried it from IE 8 as well, same result. Took me a half our just to get to mozilla.com I installed IE 8 2 days ago, and since then, my monitor flashes the page when i'm in gmail. Also flash videos won't play worth a crap. I just installed K-lite Mega 6.6 to try to fix that.

I wonder if it's not some of the newer technologies like HTML 5 that the other browsers support. I have the same problem, and the sites load fine in Opera. I still have 3.6 (whatever's latest), and haven't upgraded to 4 yet because of all the extensions I use. I'm waiting until it's more stable and my more important extensions are usable. I use Hulu's desktop viewer and Opera to make up for it, currently.
Adding screenshots of my experience with it. The text will load, but no video or images. That's why I thought it might be some new language / protocol.

  • Why sqlplus / as sysdba create 4 connections?

    Hi all,
    I have a 4 node rac set-up running 11.2.0.2.
If I log on to one of the 4 servers and connect to the database using sqlplus "/ as sysdba" it connects to the local database but also
creates another 4 connections (one on each instance) so I end up with 5 connections. I wanted to know
    a) why it does this,
    b) how it does this
    c) can I stop it doing this (if I just so wanted to?)
    Many thanks

    Hi Billy,
your response made me dig a bit deeper, and I found out what it was!
My query to return sessions was from gv$session, and I was using the gv$session.module column to show the connection.
However, if I changed this from module to gv$session, it returned the oracle PZ99 process.
Looking on Metalink, I see this process is used to return data from remote nodes and was introduced in 10g RAC.
Looking at the columns together, you will see way I thought the way I did originally!

  • Database is up and running but when I connect as oracle it's idle?

    Hi experts,
I have a strange kind of problem. I installed Oracle10 on UNIX.
When I connect to the Database remotely I am on a perfect working database but when I am connected directly on the machine via Oracle user, and run SQLPLUS I am connected to an idle instance. Also I can not startup this instance because I of 'ORA-01102: cannot mount database in EXCLUSIVE mode'.
when I run SQLPLUS useing the '@' condition I am connected correctly.
I checked SID settings and so on but it looks fine. I also only have one instance installed (I hope!).
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Enter user-name:

  • The user account in which the Oracle VSS Writer Service is running does not have the DBA privileges to log in to the Oracle instance.

VSS-00011: Connection to database instance <instance_name> failed.
Cause : The user account in which the Oracle VSS Writer Service is running  does not have the DBA privileges to log in to the Oracle instance.
Action : Run the Oracle VSS Writer Service in a user account that can connect to the Oracle instance with DBA privileges.
I have assigned ora_dba group to the user that runs the Oracle VSS Writer Service which is the only Oracle solution but still getting
the above error. Was advised to raise the issue here that it is an OS issue. Pls help

The user account cannot access Oracle Database instance. And also how do you temporarily disable security software on the server.
Have you checked what I already asked for? "Try using the user account and access the Database Instance.
That will let you see if the problem is with the user account permissions or not."
If this does not help then you can contact Oracle as suggested by Dave.

  • Oracle instance running on a system with low open file descriptor

    Hello.
We have 10.1.0.4 on SuSE 9 on x86 64bit Sun servers.
We have databases that if started manually come up without the warning, but if started via a shell script scheduled through a crontab start up with this warning: "Oracle instance running on a system with low open file descriptor".
My understanding is that it has to do with OS ulimit. it appears that non-interactive shell (crontab) does not set the nofiles at 65536.
All our system are set up exactly the same way. The problem is, though, that some systems do not report the warning even when started non-interactively.
My question is this: assuming my nofiles ulimit is in fact too low on all systems, why would some systems report the warning and others would not? Is there anything database specific the instance looks for when it starts, such as the number of datafiles in the database, instance memory size, etc..., which would make the instance warn in some cases but not the others?
    Thank You
    Boris

    Thank You Satish.
This is a good reference and we may end up looking into the patch bundle associated with the bug.
But does anyone have any idea why the systems that are set up the same exact way would warn on systems and not on others?
Also, the Metalink note talks about init.crsd. I have not build an association between this inconsistency and RAC.
What I do see is that if we start up our database non-interactively (where ulimit -n resolves to 1024, instead of 65536) the warning is generated, in some cases.
Perhaps, the 1024 is too low. But then my question is why would Oracle think it is too low only on some servers and not all?

  • Unable to connect to Oracle using OS authentication (sqlplus / as sysdba)

    Hello,
When I try to connect locally ,using OS authentication ( sqlplus / as sysdba ), on a Oracle database, I get "ORA-01031: insufficient privileges" error.
    OS: Windows XP
Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.1.0 - Prod.
connecting as sysdba using sys/pasword works.
    I have setup :
-> Log on as a batch job
-> Log on as a service
I am also member of ORA_DBA group.
I mention that connecting "/ as sysdba" worked many months after I've installed the Oracle database. But at some moment in time connecting "/ as sysdba" was no longer possible.

    Thank you for any suggestion.

    Hi,
I have the same issues from the beginning..
I have two Oracle homes ( One for earlier installed SOA10g, and another for current installing SOA11g).
I have the right sqlora.net file. I have removed the old path and reset to point the new oracle home. I have this home entry as the first entry in my Universal installer too.
I AM ABLE TO CONNECT WITH sys USER AS SYSDBA on THE SAME SYSTEM ( I MEAN WHERE i INSTALLED THE DATABASE) USING THE command prompt.
But I am not able to connect as the SYSDBA with sys ACCOUNT through the SQLDeveloper tool. or RCU tool? Any help please. Again I am able to connect as a normal user through the SQL developer using the SYSTEM account.

  • Running HTMLDB against another Oracle Instance

I have an HTMLDB dashboard onto our system and would like to be able to run it against a different Oracle instance. Ideally would like to be able to choose the instance on the login screen. Currently we have to setup dblinks to each of our instances and then customise the application to select from the relevant instance. Any ideas?

AFAIK, Golden Gate has no requirement on Oracle edition to be used, but could have licence cost differences.
It works on Oracle from version 8i to the latest one, not only on Oracle database, and not only between same Oracle version and same OS, and not only between two Oracle db .
    Nicolas.

  • WARNING:Oracle instance running on a system with low open file

    Hi Guys
please can you advice on how to resolve this error: WARNING:Oracle instance running on a system with low open file

Answer a couple of questions for us first:
    1. What version of Oracle (ex. 10.2.0.3) are you running?
    2. What operating system is Oracle installed on?
    3. Where did this error show up (alert log, SQL*Plus session, etc.)?

  • Use of sqlplus / as sysdba in oracle 11g

What is purpose of sqlplus / as sysdba
if the database is at client place he can see the data by modifying the existing users password right?
how to restrict logging under sqlplus / as sysdba by giving some password for it to login

How to track the no of log-in attempts made for this database either success or failure.
Any sys table is there to track the records
Thanks!Unless you have changed the defaults, all connect attempts by normal users are logged to the sys.ayd$ table, and all connects as sysdba are logged to files in audit_file_dest (Unix) or the application log (Windows).
