SQL SELECT returns Nothing and Causes trigger to terminate

Question,
I have a trigger that basically say's if this value is true check this 2nd value. if the second value does not exist the trigger bails...and raises an exception. Is there
anything I can use to ensure a value is returned. ..
2nd SQL value.
Select Pointnum from Measurepoint where eqnum = :new.Eqnum;
works fine if there is a result, if no data the whole trigger bails.
Any help appreciated. ...

It's generally helpful to specify the actual exception you're getting rather than just saying "raises an exception". Oracle error numbers and error strings are exceptionally useful debugging tools.
My guess, though is that your actual select statement is more like
Select Pointnum
  Into some_local_variable
  from Measurepoint
where eqnum = :new.Eqnum; which is supposed to return an exception NO_DATA_FOUND if there are no rows found and TOO_MANY_ROWS if more than one row is found. If it is expected that either of these scenarios would be valid, you could simply catch the exception
BEGIN
  Select Pointnum
    Into some_local_variable
    from Measurepoint
   where eqnum = :new.Eqnum;
EXCEPTION
  WHEN no_data_found THEN
    <<do something>>
END;Justin

  • Kff.where returns 'null'  and causes sql error - looking for a work around

    Hello,
    I am using BI 5.6.3 in EBS (11.5.10.2)
    I have created a kff.where as follows:
    <lexical
    type="oracle.apps.fnd.flex.kff.where"
    name="lp_location_where_clause"
    comment="Comment"
    application_short_name="OFA"
    id_flex_code="LOC#"
    id_flex_num=":lp_location_flex_structure"
    code_combination_table_alias="loc"
    segments="ALL"
    operator="BETWEEN"
    operand1=":p_location_low"
    operand2=":p_location_high"/>
    </lexicals>
    Everything works fine, as long as I have a values for the p_location_low and p_location_high. However, this is a parameter that comes in from a concurrent program and is optional. When the user doesn't pick a value, :p_location_low is the concatenated delimiters for the location '..'.
    When this runs, the kff.where is returning null which causes 'Invalid Relational Operation error' because 'AND null' is not valid.
    Warning in the log is :[091910_025232517][][STATEMENT] !!Warning: FlexAPI returns null for 'x_where_expression' lexical definition...
    Does anyone have a workaround for this since making the parameter required is not an option for my users?
    Thanks for reading.

    In your SQL*Plus session, make sure you
    SQL> set define offbefore trying to create the Java stored procedure. SQL*Plus assumes that any string that begins with an & is a substitution variable unless you tell it that you have no substitution variables (via set define off).

    I would post what I have tried so far but I have been trying many different types of queries over the last few days. In short I need the employees first and last reads for each date. They could have many entries per date or just 1. I am certain that this
    is a trivial thing for a SQL expert but not trivial for me :).
    Thank you in advance!

    Thank you!
    This is almost what I need. The LocationGUID has to be included in the output. When I include it, I have to put it in the Group By clause. When I do that the reads are based on the LocationGUID (see below).

  • Pl/SQL Select Into

    Hello,
    is there a difference between the command 'select into' in Regions with 'pl/sql function returning Query' and 'Pl/sql amonymous block'.
    select MAX(maxgroups) into groupno from Table where trackid=:P_ITEM2 and col1=:P_ITEM2;
    This statement works only in the Region-'Pl/sql amonymous block.
    Can somebody help me please,
    I really can't find the reason!
    Moni

    Hi Marc,
    I' ve found out that the select statement works, the problem is that the items have no value.
    When I display the content of the item in the Region-Topic ‚Test – &P32_Item.’ it is displayed correctly.
    Maybe I’m calling the item in the pl/sql in a wrong way??

  • Looking for the oracle equivalent of T-SQL 'SELECT TOP n'

    Hi,
    I'm looking for the Oracle equivalent of T-SQL 'SELECT TOP n'
    and can't find any. There is SAMPLE(n) function but it supposed
    to pick up random values and I'm not sure if it's possible to
    make it select top values. Please help 8-)
    Thanx

    Hi Marina.
    Oracle does not have a functionality like SQL Server for TOP
    selection. The ROWNUM option should be used with great care and
    you may get unreliable results.

  • APEX,PDF's, BI Publisher and SQL Query returning SQL code..

    I don't know if I should be posting this in this Forum or the BI Publisher forum, so I am posting in BOTH forums..
    I love APEX, let me say that first.. And appreciate the support offered here by the group, but am running int a confusing issue when BI Publisher tries to build a report from the above type APEX report..
    Here is my dilemma:
    I have a number of reports that are part of a Oracle package. They return an SQL Query back to a reports region on a page. I am having to deal with the column names returned are col01, col02..
    The issue I have is, when building the Application Level query to download the XML sample from in building RTF layouts in Word, you can not use this code, you MUST use a standard SQL Select.
    I have taken the sql from the function returning sql, and copied into the application query, supplying the required data values for bind variables being used in the query.
    An XML file is produced, and I use this to build the RTF format file that I load back into APEX and try to use it for the PDF rendering of the report. I can view the output as a PDF in the Word add on, but when I try using it with the report, it is returning an empty PDF file.
    Can anyone tell me what error log files on the bi publisher side I can look at to see what error is happening?

    Tony,
    You can find the log as follows:
    - go to http://[yourserver]:[yourport]/em
    - logon to OC4J EM: oc4jadmin/[yourpassword]
    - click on "logs" at the bottom of the page
    - in the hgrid/tree, expand OC4J->home->Application
    xmlpserver
    - click on view log icon
    You can also observe what's going on in BI Publisher
    by going to the command prompt from where you started
    it.
    Or, as a third option, you can locate the file on
    your file system, depending on your setup, the path
    would be something similar to this:
    \oracle\product\10.2.0\bip\j2ee\home\application-deplo
    yments\xmlpserver\application.log
    With that said though, I don't expect you'll find
    much in there that would help with your particular
    problem. I suspect you either get no rows in your XML
    at runtime, due to some session state issues, or your
    XML structure does in fact not match your RTF
    template.
    I'm not quite following your problem description,
    i.e. when did you do what and are you associating
    your report layout with a report query or report
    region. So just some general notes, your query needs
    to be parseable at design-time, when exporting the
    XML, so that you get the XML file with the proper
    column names derived from your query. If you want to
    use your RTF template with a standard report region,
    you must export the XML file first using the advanced
    XML structure option. And of course the column names
    in your report query need to match the column names
    in your report region.
    Perhaps this helps you further diagnose what's going
    on, if you have additional information that could
    help, let me know. And if you could stage this on
    apex.oracle.com, I'd be happy to take a look.
    Regards,
    MarcMarc,
    Thanks for looking at this issue. Below find my remarks to your questions..
    Re: your query needs
    to be parseable at design-time, when exporting the
    XML, so that you get the XML file with the proper
    column names derived from your query.At the start of this process, the query code was a function in a package. The function was returning an SQL select statement, for a report region on a page. I took the select statement, built an application query to build a sample of the xml for BI Publisher desktop (Add-on for Word). The code was producing the usual Col01, Col02.. since at design time that is were the column names.
    When I then took the xml from this and built the rtf for loading into my APEX application.
    When testing the Application Query with this RTF report layout, I am getting PDF's. When using it with the report region sending an xml feed to BI Publisher I am getting nothing back.
    I have since taken the sql code and moved it back into the report region, and set the region to have a type of straight SQL Query. I have even tried to hard-code the parameters I was getting from the page to limit data returned.
    Is it possible to see the xml being produced by the APEX page?
    Re: Stage this on apex.oracle.com.. I would love to, but we would have HIPPA issues if I posted the data on a public website.
    Can I send you the RTF file and the xml file that the application query is creating to see if there something weird about them?
    Thank you,

  • What is a good way to check if sql select basd cursor return anything

    Hello everyone,
    I am trying to find a good way to identify that a SQL select based cursor return nothing.
    I know that or we use exception when no data found, or count(*) to check how many rows are returned.
    I have a cursor based on quite a long select statement.
    Like
    CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE aaa (v_input IN NUMBER, v_output OUT VARCHAR2)
         CURSOR long_cursor IS
              --long select statement(with input variable) ;
    BEGIN
         Select count(*)
         Into v_count
      From
      -- a long select statment with input again ;
      IF v_count > 0 then
        For record in long_cursor loop
         --Get information from cursor
            --other processing for output
        End loop;
      END IF;
    END;Is there any other way than the above ?
    I would love to reduce the amount of typing. I know that repetition in code is not good.
    Thanks in advance,

    Not sure I understand your point. I am still a new bie here.
    >
    A flag is just a piece of data. By itself it doesn't prevent anyone from changing the data. And in a multiuser system anything you try to check is based on the COMMITTED data in the system. Two users can be changing two different rows at the same time but neither user will see the other change.
    So if you try to count how many rows meet a particular condition you may get a count of 8 but after the other user commits the count might be 7 or 9. So if you use 8 it may not be valid for very long.
    >
    But the app we use is Oracle Application Express 4.0.
    I assume when the data is read, there will be some kind of lock on these rows so other users cannot change it, right ?
    Or should I use SELECT for update even I do not update anything here.
    >
    I can't help you with that one. That would be a question for the application express forum.
    Oracle Application Express (APEX)
    You don't need to use FOR UPDATE if you don't plan to change the data. But, as explained above, you can't rely on any data you query being the same because another user could be changing it while you are looking at it.

    Hi,
    1/ first check you are passing the bind variables and
    appropriate values in the call to your report - if
    the query returns no data then you get an empty page
    So if your query takes :P10_USERNAME variable then
    pass it to the report in the URL
    f?p=&APP_ID.:0:&SESSION.:PRINT_REPORT=YOUR_REP_QUERY_N
    AME:::P10_USERNAME:MYUSER
    2/ try to use the Default layout first to check your
    report query really returns the data when called
    3/ if you defined a header in your rtf template check
    there is no & (ampersand) - if using & in the header
    and preview the template from word it displays data
    OK, but if you use this template in the report query
    it fails to render the data (bug in Apex-> Bi
    Publisher integration maybe?)
    4/ If using the table in the rtf template check its
    width does not overflow the page margins - there is a
    problem with pdf export

  • How to capture all the rows returned from a sql select query in CPO

    Hi,
      I am executing an sql select query which returns multiple rows. I need to capture the values of each row to specific variables. How do I proceed.
    Thanks,
    Swati

    The select activities  ("Select from Oracle," Select from SQL Server," etc.) against database already return tables.  Use one of the database adapters to do your select, and it will already be in a table form.  Just put your query in the select and identify the columns in your result table. The online help or the database adapter guides in the product documentation can help.

  • SQL Loader and INSERT Trigger

    I have problem and your help to solve it would be very much appreciated.
    I am uploading a text file with SQL Loader into a table. Since I used APPEND option in the Loader, I don't want records to be duplicated. So, I wrote a "BEFORE INSERT .. FOR EACH ROW" trigger to check whether that row already exists or not.
    For example, let us consider a table TEST as follows.
    Fld1     NUMBER(2);
    Fld2     VARCHAR2(10);
    Fld3     VARCHAR2(10);
    I have a trigger on this table.
    CREATE OR REPLACE TRIGGER Trg_Bef_Insert_Test
    BEFORE INSERT ON Test FOR EACH ROW
    DECLARE
    vCount NUMBER(2);
    DuplicateRow EXCEPTION;
    BEGIN
    SELECT Count(*) INTO vCount FROM Test
         WHERE fld1 || fld2 || fld3 = :new.fld1 || :new.fld2 || :new.fld3;
    IF vCount > 0 THEN
         RAISE DuplicateRow;
    END IF;
    EXCEPTION
    WHEN DuplicateRow THEN
         Raise_Application_Error (-20001,'Record already exists');
    WHEN OTHERS THEN
         DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('ERROR : ' || SQLCODE || '; ' || SUBSTR(SQLERRM, 1, 150));
    END;
    Please refer to the following SQL statements which I executed in the SQL Plus.
    SQL> insert into test values (1,'one','first');
    1 row created.
    SQL> insert into test values (1,'one','first');
    insert into test values (1,'one','first')
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-20001: Record already exists
    ORA-06512: at "CAMELLIA.TRG_TEST", line 13
    ORA-04088: error during execution of trigger 'CAMELLIA.TRG_TEST'
    Would anyone tell me why do errors -6512 and -4088 occur ?
    Also, if you have any other suggestion to handle this situation, please let me know.
    By the way, I am using Oracle 8.1.7.
    Thank you.

    There are a few things wrong here, but you should really use a unique constraint for this.
    SQL> create table t (a number, b number, c number,
      2      constraint uk unique (a, b, c));
    Table created.Here's an example data file with 12 records three of which are duplicates.
    1,2,3
    3,4,5
    6,7,8
    3,2,1
    5,5,5
    3,4,5
    3,2,1
    1,1,1
    2,2,2
    6,7,8
    8,8,8
    9,9,9And a control file
    load data
    infile 'in.dat'
    append
    into table t
    fields terminated by ',' optionally enclosed by '"'
    (a, b, c)Running it with sql loader, inserts the nine records, outputs the three duplicates to a .bad file and logs all the errors in the .log file. No need for triggers or any code.

  • How to exit from SQL*Plus based on the return value of a SQL select stment?

    Hi
    I have a SQL script executed from SQL*Plus. I would like to know if SQL*Plus
    supports any kind of branching or exiting from script execution based on a
    returned value of a SQL select statement. I am on 9i.
    Regards,
    Tamas Szecsy

    in sqlplus, you have whenever
    ex:
    whenever sqlerror exit failure
    insert into ...
    -- if this fails, then you will be out
    insert into ...
    -- if this fails, then you will be out
    whenever sqlerror continue
    insert into ...
    -- if this fails, this continues
    insert into ...and you have PL/SQL
    declare x number;
    begin
    select count(*) into x from emp;
    if (x=14) then null; end if;
    end;
    /note that you can mix those in some case
    -- exit if there is no row in emp
    whenever sqlerror exit 1
    var dummy number
    exec select count(*) into :dummy from emp having count(*)!=0

  • How oracle replaces "carrage return, tab and blank" in v$sql.sql_text??

    Hi. all.
    I am wondering how oracle replace "carrage return, tab and blank" character to v$sql.sql_text??
    I am try to find sql_id by the following query.
    select * from v$sql where sql_text like 'blur blur %'.
    However, how can I specify 'blur blur %' when the original sql text includes "carrage return, tab, amd double blank"?
    To be more specific,
    the original sql statement:
    select
    col_a,
    col_b , -- tab character included
    colc , -- more than one blank included
    Then, how can I specifiy "sql_text like 'blur blur %'" ??
    As far as I know, oracle replace "carrage return, tab, and more than one blank" to "ONE BLANK" character.
    Is this right???
    Thanks in advance.
    Best Regards.

    Oracle simply unformat the SQL text and put it into v$sql.sql_text because SQL formatting is only for reading and clearity purpose. It don't help to generate SQL_ID and execution plan. You may get couple of freely avilable SQL formatting tool on the internet, you can simply copy SQL_TEXT and if you paste them into those tool, they will auto format, tab, upper and lower case of required words.

  • Javascript and sql select statement

    I am working in html db in the 10 g environment. I'm trying to create an "auto suggestion function" that predicts values as the user enters characters into a text field. I've gotten it to work by hard coding the values in the function, ie: states. btw: there are several external javascript files at work here.
    What I want is to create a dynamic link to the database to gather, say, all names of providers at the time the page is built to use in the auto suggest format. I want to put this into a javascript routine and I'm having problems finding out how to mix the sql select statement into the javascript function.
    For the states example, I'm using:
    function StateSuggestions() {
    this.states = [
    "Alabama", "Alaska", "Arizona", "Arkansas",
    "California", "Colorado", "Connecticut",..."Wyoming" ];
    Can I substitute the hard coded data (states) with a sql select statement such
    as:
    select name from <dbtable> ???
    How does this need to be "wrapped" or containerized?
    Thank you. You have a great product in html db and your site is very useful. I appreciate everything you have done to assist us. Again, thank you.

    Hi,
    You can use TRUNC with 2 arguments to get the first DATE in a month, year, quarter, week, hour, minute, ISO year, ...
    SELECT  TRUNC ( ADD_MONTHS ( SYSDATE
                               , 12
                  , 'MONTH'
                  )     AS first_of_month
    FROM    dual
    ;The DATE returned will be in the same month, year, quearter, ... as the first argument.
    \We convered the last day of the month in [your previous question|http://forums.oracle.com/forums/message.jspa?messageID=3942939#3942939].
    At that time, I warded about using LAST_DAY as a cutoff point; TRUNC is a much better way.
    For example, to find all appointment_dates in the current month next year:
    SELECT  *
    FROM    appointments
    WHERE   appointment_date >= TRUNC (ADD_MONTHS (SYSDATE, 12), 'MONTH')
    AND     appointment_date <  TRUNC (ADD_MONTHS (SYSDATE, 13), 'MONTH')Note that
    the first part of the WHERE clause calls for dates on or equal to the beginning of the 12th month in the future, but
    the second part of the WHERE clause calls for dates before, not equal to , the beginning of the 13th month in the future.
