Can Reporting Services 2005 report on SQL Server 2012 database?
We would like to upgrade our SQL Server from Standard 2005 to Enterprise/Standard 2012. Unfortunately, we also have a lot of reports based on Reporting Services 2005. If possible we would like avoid upgrading them at this time.
Is it possible to run Reporting Services 2005 of SQL Server 2012? If yes then is there pre-requiste like drivers or dll or any other to connect SSRS 2005 to SQL server 2012?
If we run Reporting Services 2005 of SQL Server 2012 then do we will face performance lag issue due to version difference of SSRS 2005 and SQL server 2012?Moderators,
Can anyone merge this -

Missing access for databases on MS SQL server 2012 database engine
Hi, i have trouble with my MS SQL server 2012 database engine.
I can't access to all databases on server by error:
"Cannot resolve the collation conflict between "SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS" and "Cyrillic_General_CI_AS" in the equal to operation"
If i will change collation to Cyrillic_General_CI_AS, then all db would delete from server.AFAIK, this error message thrown on the query level and can be easily resolved..
SELECT <columns> FROM Orders O JOIN Customers C

SQL server 2012 - Database Availability Group
We have 2 new Servers ready to be deployed as Database Servers for Sharepoint 2013.
both server have 1TB RAID 5 Hard Disk Space.
We don't have any kind of Shared Storage/SAN etc & we cannot afford to buy this.
I have Configured Windows Server Fail-over Cluster with File Share Quorum.
May i Configure the SQL Database 2012 on Each Server on local disk and then make High Availability Groups? As well as the youtube video that Edwin has posted for you have a read of my article on SimpleTalk.com.

Maintenance plan for SQL Server 2012 Database in AlwaysOn Availability Group
Hi all,
I need assistance creating a maintenance plan that will backup a databases logs in order to prevent them from filling up the drive they are located on. I have looked at some blogs but they do not specifically show how this is done.
My database is in an AlwaysOn Availability Group.
Thank you very much for your help!
JakeHi all,

My database is in an AlwaysOn Availability Group.
Regular maintenance plan would work. Only thing to remember is that when you create log backup plan, there is a checkbox which says whether it should honor backup preference or not.

SQL Server 2012 Database with FileStream enabled tables
Hi,
I have some questions concerning the SQL Server 2012 FileStream feature.
In a database combining both Filestream connected tables and none filestream connected tables. It is obviously possible to tell the root path to a filestream FILEGROUP. It's also possible to create database primary data file (.mdf) and several
optional secondary data files (.ndf), and multiple log files.
If I have two filestream connected tables, which each in turn have a couple of other referenced tables (none filestream connected). Is it possible to put the filestream filegroup1 (eg. the filestream connected table1) and its referenced none filestream connected
tables, their data, indexes etc., on the same physical data file? And the other filestream connected table and its referenced tables to another physical file (.ndf)? If this is possible and recommended, how do I declare such an create database statement?
For ex. when having tables for both none archived state, archived state, in the same database. Or is the best solution to split the two (and its referenced tables) in separate databases?
SWEDEVHello,
File groups a just contains for the objects, you e.g. can split one table over several file Groups/secondarie files using partitioning. And a filestream is also just a table. You can reference all table Independent of file Groups / file stream.

I got this error message when I tried to connect to SQL Server 2012 using Management studio 2012.
Service 'Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.IRegistrationService' not found (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.SDK.SqlStudio)Did this get this resolved?
My SSMS 2012 was running without issue for several months until I installed VS2012. After the VS2012 I started getting "Service 'Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.IRegistrationService' not found" when connecting to database in SSMS 2012. I uninstalled VS2012
and SSMS 2012 started working again. Installed VS2012 and SSMS 2012 is broken again.
I tried the above suggestions without success. Here are the error details. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sharepoint 2007 using sql server 2012 database server
We still have an old SharePoint 2007 farm that runs on SQL Server 2008 and Reporting Services 2008. I would like to migrate this app over to SQL Server 2012. From what I gather SharePoint 2007 supports SQL 2012 if you are running WSS service pack 3 and
SharePoint server service pack 3 I am already on SP3. So my question is who all here is running SharePoint 2007 on SQL 2012 and have you had any problems?Yes I have an environment that is SPS 2007 wSP3 and SQL Server 2012, and have been doing this for 2 months. So far, no problems. There have been issies with User Profile services, but those turned out to be unrelated.

SQL SERVER 2012 Database Engine login issues
I've installed MS SQL SERVER 2012 Standard Edition. WHat i'm facing now is the SQL SERVER will auto change my "sa" login password to soemthing else. I had put a password to "xxx", but when login to "sa" account using SQL Authentication
mode, it will prompt login failed for user "sa".
So, i change to WIndow Authentication mode and login , then from there i change the "sa" password to the original value. Now i login again with the password using SQL authentication and it works.
But my question is - Why the password will auto change after sometime? does it relate to sticter security policy in SQL SERVER 2012?
Please advice. No, it can't change that on its own.
Please recall whether during troubleshooting, you have changed the password and tried.
Also, please check if due to any reason was there any job doing this for you unknowingly, may be some password changed sometime and its getting changed now and then and its getting reset.
We too do something sometime which we forget.
Please check in your team internally on it.

RehaanKhan. MHello,
Try to use port 465, port 2587 or port 587 instead of using port 25, as explained on the following articles.

Hi
I'm working on upgrading sharepoint 2010 to sharepoint 2013 with sql server 2008 r2. I've ran into some problems but have been able to get a test farm upgraded. However to run SSRS 2013 it seems Sql Server 2012 Reporting Services are required. Upgrading
to a full sql server 2012 database isn't an option. I know that sql server 2012 reporting services can use sql server 2008 r2 as a catalog and content database so I was wondering could this be a workaround? Importantly would I need a separate machine/virtual
machine to host sql server 2012 reporting services? or could it live on the sql server 2008 r2 machine? Any pointers appreciated. Thanks DanRemember that SSRS must be deployed on the SharePoint server. Having said that, yes you can install SSRS 2012 SP1 on a server running SQL 2008 R2. And yes, you can use 2008 R2 as your Database Engine server while SSRS 2012 SP1 runs on the SharePoint server.

Run Reporting services 2005 with databases housed on SQL Server 2012?
Hi, I have a RS 2005 install in which the ReportServer and ReportServerTempDB databases reside on a different SQL Server 2005 server. I am planning to upgrade DB server to 2012 and would like to keep SSRS as 2005.As a second phase I will upgrade SSRS2005
to SSRS 2008. So I would be running something like this:
Server A: SQL 2005 Reporting Services
Server B: SQL 2012 database engine - housing ReportServer and ReportServerTempDB
Is this configuration supported?Hello,
According to the
BOL, Report Server service checks the database version at startup. If the report server is connected to a database that is an earlier version, the report server will update the database during startup. If you have a newer report server database, you
cannot use it with an earlier version of a report server instances.
In that case, the earlier versions of SQL Server Database Engine that can be used to host the SSRS report server databases. For example, In SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services, we can use either SQL Server 2000 or SQL Server 2005 to host the databases, for
SSRS 2012, we can use SQL Server 2012,2008 R2,2008,2005.
Based on my test, In the Reporting Services 2005 Configure Manager, we can create a new database on a remote SQL Server 2012 database engine and the Initialization is successful.
In this way, the databases are created from the script file which installed with the Reporting Services instance, you can find the Catalog.sql and CatalogTempDB.sql under folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.3\Reporting Services\ReportServer.
However, when upgrade the existing ReportServer database and ReportServerTempDB database on the SQL Server 2012 by restore from a backup, we cannot use this existing database for Reporting Services 2005 and get the following message:
The database version (162) does not match your reporting serivces installation. And the initialization failed.
In your case, you can host the ReportServer database and ReportServerTempDB database of SSRS 2005 on SQL Server 2012 database enginer by create a new database from Reporting Services 2005 Configure Manager. But you cannot use the existing
database which upgrade to SQL Server 2012.

Moving to unicode datatype for an entire database - SQL Server 2012
Hi,
I've a SQL Server 2012 database with more tables having more char and varchar columns.
I'd like to change quickly char columns in nchar columns and varchar columns in nvarchar columns.
Is it possible to solve this issue, please? Many thanksHello,
Creating a script could do it quickly as shown in the following article:
http://blog.sqlauthority.com/2010/10/18/sql-server-change-column-datatypes/
But creating the scripts may take you some time.

SQL Server 2005 performance decreases with DB size while SQL Server 2012 is fine
Hi,
We have a C# windows service running that polls some files and inserts/updates some fields in database.
The service was tested on a local dev machine with SQL Server 2012 running and performance was quite decent with any number of records. Later on the service was moved to a test stage environment where SQL Server 2005 is installed. At that point database
was still empty and service was running just fine but later on, after some 500k records were written, performance problems came to light. After some more tests we've founds out that, basically, database operation performance in SQL Server 2005 decreases with
a direct correlation with the database size. Here are some testing results:

One more thing is that it's not Process2 table that constantly grows in size but is Process1 table, that gets almost 100k records each run.
After that SQL Server 2005 has also been installed on a dev machine just to test things and we got exactly the same results. Both SQL Server 2005 and 2012 instances are installed using default settings with no changes at all. The same goes for databases
created for the service.
So the question is - why are there such huge differences between performance of SQL Server 2005 and 2012? Maybe there are some settings that are set by default in SQL Server 2012 database that need to be set manually in 2005?
What else can I try to test? The main problem is that production SQL Server will be updated god-knows-when and we can't just wait for that.
Any suggestions/advices are more than welcome....One more thing is that it's not Process2 table that constantly grows in size but is

Hi,
It is not clear to me what is that you are doing, but now we have a better understanding on ONE of your tables an it is obviously you will get worse result as the data become bigger. Actually your table look like a automatic build table by ORM like Entity
Framework, and it's DDL probably do not much your needs. For example if your select query is using a filter on the other column that [setID] then you have no index and the server probably have to scan the entire table in order to find the records that you
need.
Forum is a suitable place to seek advice about a specific system (as I mentioned before we are not familiar with your system), and it is more suitable for general questions. For example the fact that you have no index except the index on the column [setID]
can indicate a problem. Ultimately to optimize the system will need to investigate it more thoroughly (as it is no longer appropriate forum ... but we're not there yet). Another point is that now we can see that you are using [timestamp] column, an this
implies that your are using this column as a filter for selecting the data. If so, then maybe a better DDL will be to use clustered index on this column and if needed a nonclustered index on the [setID] if it is needed at all...
what is obviously is that next is to check if this DDL fit
your specific needs (as i mentioned before).
Next step is to understand what action do you do with this table. (1) what is your query which become slowly in a bigger data set. (2) Are you using ORM (object relational mapping, like Entity Framework
code first), and if so then which one.
