SQL Server 2012 syspolicy_purge_history fails step 3 "Erase Phantom System Health Records."
I recently installed SQL Server 2012 Ent (x64). The install is a stand alone default instance.
The syspolicy_purge_history job fails on step three with the following error:
Executed as user: <DomainName>\sql_xxx_agt_svc. A job step received an error at line 1 in a PowerShell script. The corresponding line is 'set-executionpolicy RemoteSigned -scope process -Force'. Correct the script and reschedule the job. The error
information returned by PowerShell is: 'Security error. '. Process Exit Code -1. The step failed.
Here is the code that is in the step:
if ('$(ESCAPE_SQUOTE(INST))' -eq 'MSSQLSERVER') {$a = '\DEFAULT'} ELSE {$a = ''};
(Get-Item SQLSERVER:\SQLPolicy\$(ESCAPE_NONE(SRVR))$a).EraseSystemHealthPhantomRecords()
The domain user is the account that SQL Agent is running as.
What permissions need to be granted to this account?
Here is the link to the Connect post:
https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/details/754063/sql-server-2012-syspolicy-purge-history-job-step-3-fails-with-security-error
I'm putting this in the connect post as well, but putting here in case somoene else comes across it.
I was having the same problem with the syspolicy_purge_history job right after a standalone SQL 2012 (with SP1 and cu4,
11.0.3368.0 (X64)) install that happened to be on a cluster but was not going to be a clustered instance. After trying all the different suggestions here around the ExecutionPolicy, I was still getting nowhere.
Turns out, having a named isntance with a static port number and the SQL Browser service disabled was causing my problems. Apparently that was not allowing PowerShell to find the SQL instance. When I would navigate the SQLSERVER:\SQLPolicy folder
in PowerShell (sqlps), I could get to the server root, but not the instance. If I even tried to list the subdirectories under the server folder, I would get an error:
PS SQLSERVER:\> cd .\SQLPolicy\SRVR
PS SQLSERVER:\SQLPolicy\SRVR> ls
WARNING: 'INST' not available: Failed to connect to server. --> A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. + cd <<<< .\INST
+ CategoryInfo : NotSpecified: (:) [Set-Location], ConnectionFailureException
+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Common.ConnectionFailureException,Microsoft.PowerShell.Commands.SetLocationCommand
To solve this issue, I had to open SQL Server Configuration Manager and create an alias under the SQL Native Client 11.0 Configuration (I didn't need to set the 32-bit one):
Alias
[server name]\[instance name]
Port
[my static port]
Protocol
TCP/IP
Server
[server name]\[instance name]
Once this was done, I was able to set the ExecutionPolicy registry settings, and the job completed. Here are my registry settings:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\PowerShell\1\ShellIds\Microsoft.PowerShell\ExecutionPolicy = Restricted
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\PowerShell\1\ShellIds\Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.PowerShell.sqlps110\ExecutionPolicy = RemoteSigned

Hello, recently uninstalled all of SQL 2008 Shared features components in leaving just the SQL engine intact.
Afterwards notice the syspolicy_purge_history job has been failing at Step3 mentioning:
The process could not be created for step 3 of job 0x6F6178461B7373468A20C1DB8A6F5C83 (reason: The system cannot find the file specified). The step failed.
Does anyone know how this can be fixed?
Thanks in advance.Hi techresearch7777777,
The error could be caused by that the SQLPS.exe file cannot be found. Please perform the below steps to troubleshoot this issue.
1. Execute the following statements to check the location of SQLPS.exe file.
SELECT * FROM msdb.dbo.syssubsystems WHERE start_entry_point ='PowerShellStart'
2. Verify the 'SQLPS.exe' file is located in the path as per step 1.
3. If you cannot find the SQLPS.exe in the path above, search for SQLPS.exe on the server.
a. If the SQLPS.exe file exists on the server, correct the path recorded in the msdb.dbo.syssubsystems table by using the following statements, then restart SQL Server Agent Service and check if there are some issues with syspolicy_purge_history
job.
Use msdb;
GO
sp_configure 'allow updates', 1 ;
RECONFIGURE WITH OVERRIDE ;
GO
UPDATE msdb.dbo.syssubsystems SET agent_exe='<full_path>' WHERE start_entry_point ='PowerShellStart';
GO
sp_configure 'allow updates', 0;
RECONFIGURE WITH OVERRIDE ;
GO
b. If the SQLPS.exe doesn’t exists on the server, I suspect that it has been uninstalled. In order to obtain SQLPS module , you need to install the SQL Server 2008 Feature Pack.
Thanks,
Lydia Zhang

I have unique service accounts set up for multiple instances on the same SQL Server 2012.
When step 3 of the inbuilt syspolicy_purge_history job(Erase Phantom System Health Records) runs, it appears to attempt to run against every instance on the server despite being passed the instance path!
The SQLServer's powershell script call:
if ('$(ESCAPE_SQUOTE(INST))' -eq 'MSSQLSERVER') {$a = '\DEFAULT'} ELSE {$a = ''};
(Get-Item SQLSERVER:\SQLPolicy\$(ESCAPE_NONE(SRVR))$a).EraseSystemHealthPhantomRecords()
so with instances SERVER\X this runs as...
(Get-Item SQLSERVER:\SQLPolicy\SERVER\X).EraseSystemHealthPhantomRecords()
SERVER\X's job will run and I will see login failures in the error logs of SERVER\Y and SERVER\Z for the service account set up for instance X.
It seems Microsoft's only 'accepted solution' to this problem is for me to compromise my security by escalating the access of these service accounts?
Has anyone else run into and corrected this failure?Hi Atombath,
When you install multiple instances on one Server, and the SQL Server’s powershell scripts are the same in inbuilt syspolicy_purge_history job steps. However, when you start PowerShell by right clicking
syspolicy_purge_history job, you will find it will point to their own instance. I do a test in my SQL Server 2012,
it will not across instance to collect the error logs. So I recommend you use its original powershell scripts for the syspolicy_purge_history job.
Sometimes, if you run the syspolicy_purge_history job on a clustered instance, the syspolicy_purge_history SQL Server Agent job may fail due to using the computer node name instead of the virtual server name. For more information, see:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/955726/en-us
In addition, you can use different service account for your multiple SQL Server instances on the same Server. And make sure the accounts that you created get added to the sysadmin fixed server role, the accounts are also set in the three Agent roles (SqlAgentUserRole,
SqlAgentReaderRole, and SqlAgentOperatorRole).

SQL Server 2012 SP1 fails to uninstall
Hi,
I get the following error message when I try to uninstall 2012 SP1. The repair and install also gives below error
Could not load type 'System.Xml.Xsl.Xslt.XslVersion' from assembly 'System.Data.SqlXml, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=' due to value type mismatch
Any thoughts? ThanksHi Shiva Gangadhar,
According to your description, if you want to uninstall SQL Server 2012 SP1 completely, you need to note that the service pack makes changes to the system tables for maintenance reasons, and upgrades
user and distribution databases that are members of a replication topology. Due to these changes, you cannot easily remove service packs. There is no automated way to remove a service pack, and the process of removing a service pack involves several manual
steps and risks if not done correctly.
There are more details about how to remove a SQL Server Service Pack and uninstall SQL Server instance completely.

UCCX 10 and SQL server 2012 Integration - Read Step returns 0
Hi All,
I managed to integration the UCCX with SQL 2012, when I press Test, it goes successfull.
However, I put the very simple Read step which does : "SELECT * from Table" , but it returns 0.
I put wireshark on SQL Server and found out the communication seems to be OK.I can see
SQL Batch
response
ACK
But still not sure wht the read step return 0.
Thanks,
HamedHi,
if you mean that pressing the Test button returns 0 in the "Number of rows returned" field, it's perfectly normal.
Does the subsequent DB Get step return anything?

Sql Server 2012 Login Failed for user "NT Authority\System"
I have installed SQL Server on a new server. I have been getting the following error on each of the database in it.
Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM'. Reason: Failed to open the explicitly specified database 'ABC'. [CLIENT: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx]
Here is some information on the instance:
1) Default instance
2) SQL Server, Sql Server Agent, Sql Server Reporting services are running / log on using a domain service account.
3) Sql Server Browser is disabled.
4) SQL Server VSS Writer is running / log on as Local Service.
5) NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM does exists in Login with just public server roles.
I ran a trace on login failed and I get:
ApplicationName: Microsoft Windows Script Host
and it runs every 15 minutes.
Help please?Hi,
The error was thrown when the SCOM components connected to the backend SCOM databases.
You can specify a domain account, grant it the sysadmin role and the error should be gone.
Also, see the replies in your previous thread:

Fails when executing job called syspolicy_purge_history (SQL Server 2012)
Hi friends i have the following problem
The job syspolicy_purge_history of my database engine failed, specifically on the third step called "Erase Phantom System Health Records" that executes a powershell. This is the sentence that executes (All job syspolicy_purge_history
on any SQL 2012 has the same code):
if ('$(ESCAPE_SQUOTE(INST))' -eq 'MSSQLSERVER') {$a = '\DEFAULT'} ELSE {$a = ''};
(Get-Item SQLSERVER:\SQLPolicy\$(ESCAPE_NONE(SRVR))$a).EraseSystemHealthPhantomRecords()
. When i see the job history i get the following:

Aditionally i tested putting the policies in powershell like unrestricted (like i see on a blog). but it didn't work.
My SQL version is 2012 Standard SP1 X64
Please help me with this
Thanks for your help

AledsThanks for your help princekumar8 and gona_david
Hello Gona_david, You are right, when i execute the powershell sentence Get-Module -ListAvailable
the SQLPS module doesn't appear.
Look i have another SQL Server 2012 in another server, but this is patched on SP2 and the syspolicy_purge_history here runs OK. Also when i execute the powershell, the SQLPS appears in the list.
So, my question is: If i patch my server SQL Server 2012 with the error from SP1 to SP2, is Possible that the error will get away? In fact, Wouldn't be yet necessary runs the SQL install?
Basically what you recommend me in this case?
Thanks in advance
Greetings

Based on your description, we need to verify that if you get the error while starting the syspolicy_purge_history job manually in SQL Server 2012. If so, which account do you use to log on to the SQL Server instance and run the job?
According to the error message “AuthorizationManager check failed” , it indicates that your account has no permission to execute the PowerShell script in SQL Server Agent job. To troubleshoot this issue, please make sure that your account has permissions
to the SQLPS folder and it has rights to execute the PowerShell script.
In addition, please use the “Get-ExecutionPolicy” PowerShell command to check the current status of execution policy, if the execution policy is set to “Restricted”, try to set it to “RemoteSigned” or “Unrestricted”. Please note that you need to set this
execution policy in both the Windows PowerShell and the SQL PowerShell consoles.

Types of cluster in ms sql server 2012
Hi,
I am not good in sql server, i got one requirement to migrate standalone ms sql server(which contains replications also) to cluster env, so i have few things to know
1) what are the types of cluster available in ms sql server 2012
2) any steps would be appreciated
BR
PGRHi PGR,
Firstly, there are two types of clustering: Active/Active or Active/Passive.
In an Active/Active cluster there will be two or more nodes, each one “owning” an instance of Microsoft SQL Server. If one node fails, the instance it owns would fail over to the other node, running alongside (and contending for resources with) the other instance. Each
copy of SQL Server acts independently.
If one of the SQL Servers in the cluster should fail, then the failed instance of SQL Server will failover to the remaining server. This means that both instances of SQL Server will be running on one physical server, instead of two.
In an Active/Passive setup, at least one node is not the owner of an instance of SQL Server. It is “passive” and only exists to accept a failover of a node hosting a SQL instance in the event of a failover. For more details, please review this blog:
SQL Server Clustering.
Secondly, you can follow the steps in this
blog to move SQL Server from standalone to Cluster environment.
Thanks,
Lydia Zhang

Finalizing SQL Server 2012 SP2 update
Hi,
I just successfully upgraded SQL Server 2012 Developer Edition from SP1 CU8 to SP2.
Here is the actual portrait I have in my control panel (Installed programs + version):
Version changed after SP2 update (through Windows Update):
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB 11.2.5058.0
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Transact-SQL ScriptDom 11.2.5058.0
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Transact-SQL Compiler Service 11.2.5058.0
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Native Client 11.2.5058.0
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Policies
11.2.5058.0
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Setup (English) 11.2.5058.0
Microsoft VSS Writer for SQL Server 2012 11.2.5058.0
Microsoft System CLR Types for SQL Server 2012 11.2.5058.0
SQL Server Browser for SQL Server 2012 11.2.5058.0
Version changed only after installing corresponding Features Pack component:
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 T-SQL Language Service 11.2.5058.0
SQL Server Report Builder 3 for SQL Server 2012 11.2.5058.0
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Management Objects 11.2.5058.0
Version did not change:
Microsoft SQL Server System CLR Types 10.51.2500.0
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Data-Tier App Framework 11.1.2902.0
My questions:
1. Am I missing any components update or is my actual SP2 setup OK?
2. Even if I tried to install DACFramework SP2 Feature pack by running corresponding installer, it told me that I had an higher version... Does any of you have a different version number for this component?
3. I actually have SSDT for VS2010 installed. The corresponding versions I actually have are the following:
Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools 2010
10.3.31009.2
Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools - enu
10.3.31009.2
Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools Build Utilities - enu 10.3.31009.2
Should I consider upgrading any component so they work with SQL 2012 SP2 properly? If so, could someone provide me the corresponding download/webpage links?
4. Finally, should I upgrade to CU2 which is actually available. Among other problems, I notice that it should fix an index rebuild problem. Any other major issues it targets? Is there any easy way I can test if I should install this update or
not?
Thanks for helping.Hi again,
I knew I was at SP2 level now. My request is more about the Features Pack components as well as the CU2 which is actually out:
1- Features Pack components that I couldn't update:
Microsoft SQL Server System CLR Types 10.51.2500.0
--> presume was for VS2008
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Data-Tier App Framework 11.1.2902.0 --> is this the real last version?
2- SQL Server Data Tools vs Visual Studio 2010 SP1 + SQL Server 2012 SP2
Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools 2010
10.3.31009.2
Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools - enu
10.3.31009.2
Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools Build Utilities - enu 10.3.31009.2
Do I have the last versions possible (VS2010) or should I update something?
3- SQL Server 2012 SP2 CU2
What simple test can I do in order to verify if I really need to install this patch or not?
Thanks for helping! -
Geography fields in SQL Server 2012
I have SQL Server 2012 running in 2012 mode.
I run IIS 7.5 on Windows Server 2008.
I use ASP.NET and after the login form, I issue a SQL select command which include the selection of a Geography field in the result.
In order to make that work, I have to install:
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Shared Management Objects
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Shared Management Objects x86
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Shared Management Objects x64
Microsoft System CLR Types for Microsoft SQL Server System 2008
Microsoft System CLR Types for Microsoft SQL Server System 2012 x86
Microsoft System CLR Types for Microsoft SQL Server System 2012 x64
If I remove the 2008 installations, it will break. I do not understand why I have to continue to support old 2008 installation files just to benefit of Geography fields in 2012. It seems there is some kind of dependencies in 2012 in regard to Geography fields
that it continues to require the installation of those 2008 components.
I really need to get rid of that and only keep:
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Shared Management Objects x64
Microsoft System CLR Types for Microsoft SQL Server System 2012 x64
If someone has any idea, you may let me know.I have found a workaround for this issue.
Type System Version=SQL Server 2012 can be added to the connection string. On all those alternatives I have found, this one is the simpler and does not require any change in the code.
I was able to remove the following:
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Shared Management Objects
Microsoft System CLR Types for Microsoft SQL Server System 2008
...and the application is now working.
So, for now, I have those installed:
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Shared Management Objects x86
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Shared Management Objects x64
Microsoft System CLR Types for Microsoft SQL Server System 2012 x86
Microsoft System CLR Types for Microsoft SQL Server System 2012 x64
I would like to keep only the 64-bit version but I need to keep the 32-bit version because I have some script that requires BatchParser. That one does not exist in the 64-bit version. So, once I installed back the 32-bit version, it went ok.
The fact that I had to modify the connection string to have the Geography field to be workable in the ASP.NET application is an issue. I hope this will be resolved soon. I do not know if this has to be resolved at SQL Server level, .NET or ASP.NET.
But, one thing for sure, I shouldn't have to plug that in the connection string to workaround such issue. -
I am installing SQL Server 2012 Developer (from ISO image written on DVD), my machine has Windows 7 (Edit: Windows 7 with service pack 1) on it. This machine already has SQL Express and SQL 2008 R2 Express installed in it.

SQL Server Agent Job Failing on Job Step
Hi,
Firstly, apologies if this post has been made in the wrong group. Running SQL Server 2012. I'm attempting to add a SQL Server Agent Job which calls a stored procedure that sends a Database Mail message. The SQL Server and SQL Server Agent
both run under the NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE account. The Database Mail service has been enabled, and a public profile created. When running the stored procedure manually, I receive no errors - everything runs as expected and I do receive an
email containing the expected information.
I've created the job, job step, job schedule, attached the schedule to the job, and assigned the job to server, all using T-SQL without error. I've also enabled the mail profile on the SQL Server Agent, and I know that part is working because when
the job fails, I get an email notification of the failure.
I've checked the command text in the job step and parsed it within the SQL Job Step Edit window to confirm, it shows as parsing correctly. However, when I manually run the job itself, I get the following:
Execution of job failed. See the history log for details.
I check the history log and it shows:
[474] Unable to refresh Database Mail profile Database Mail Profile. (reason: ) (Not a typo, the history log shows no reason)
[260] Unable to start mail session.
[396] An idle CPU condition has not been defined - OnIdle job schedules will have no effect
The command text on the failing job step is as follows:
DECLARE @date [varchar](10)
SET @date = CAST(GETDATE() AS [varchar](10))
EXEC [dbo].[GetExceptions]
@company = 'MyCompany',
@checkDate = @date
With regard to the date value being passed as varchar: This stored procedure is used to check for exceptions against multiple databases on this server (hence the company parameter) via dynamic SQL. I'd much prefer to use proper data typing but this
is the only way I could get it to work.
Does anyone have any suggestions on anything else I could check, or insights into why this is failing? Any help is greatly appreciated!
Best Regards
BradI am not sure if this really helps but I would do follow the below steps:
1. make sure sql server agent has database mail enabled(rigt click on server agent--properties--alert system--enable database mail and choose right profile.) and RESTART THE SQL SERVER AGENT.(i know you said it i working, but sometimes, restart the
sql server agent might fix)
2. check agent error log and check if any error messages.
3. run the command text you mentioned in sql server and see if it is working.(i know you said it is working but just to make sure).
4. make sure sql server agent service user has permissions to run database mail in msdb. check this https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms186358.aspx
5. Check the output from select * from msdb.dbo.sysmail_log and if it says anything
6.it does not look like the job log is getting truncated but to make sure, get the job step output to a text file.to do this, edit the job step and on the job step properties click on advanced, enter path to the output file. this will give the complete
output for the step.
Hope it Helps!! -
I m using SQL Server 2012 Developer Edition. Even I tried 2012 express and enterprise edition but all
gave same error. I browsed msdn blog. But nothing help me out.

From here I folllowed the steps ---[I cannt insert link/image :-(]
SQL 2008/R2 setup fails with "Wait on the database engine recovery handle failed"
If I right clicked on SQL Server Service, there is no option to change the account.
Hello,
Thanks for your patience,did you tried stesp mentioned in below article
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sqljourney/archive/2012/03/16/sql-2008-r2-setup-fails-with-quot-wait-on-the-database-engine-recovery-handle-failed-quot.aspx
To resolve it, follow these steps:-
When the installation throws this error, click on OK and allow it to proceed. It will fail for Database Engine, but the SQL Server service should have
been created. Check the Services console.
If the service is present, perform the following steps:-
1. Go to SQL Server Configuration manager, right click on the SQL Server service, and change the service account (if it is local system, give
it a windows level account, and vice-versa). It might throw a WMI error but you will see the account getting updated anyway. If not, then use the Services console. Change the account for SQL Agent as well.
Use this link to change sql server service account
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms345578.aspx
2. Next, try to start the service. It should come online.
3. However, you will not be able to log in to the SQL Server
4. Now stop the service and start it from the command prompt using -m -c -T3608 parameters.
5. Now try logging in to the server using admin connection from sqlcmd (sqlcmd admin:<server name>\<instance name> ...)
6. Once logged in, use the sp_addsrvrolemember '<domain\username>','sysadmin'.
Also add the builtin/administrators to the sysadmin role
7. Now stop the service from the command prompt and start it from SQL Server configuration manager
You should be able to log in to the server now.
Hope this helps someone.
