SQL statement in MS Access

Here is the SQL statement...
SELECT BankCode,BranchCode,UserID,Password,Admin FROM UM_USER WHERE BankCode = '01' and BranchCode = '0014' and UserID ='ADMIN' and Password = 'admin'
The resultset contains result whose UserID = 'adMin' or UserID = 'admin' or Password = 'ADMin' or password = 'aDmiN'.....is SQL case insensitive in ms access?

MS Access isn't case sensitive. Learn something new every day. I thought it was case sensitive so I had to test it.
Is there any way of deal with this? You will have to deal with it in java. Do the query and extract each row and explicitly compare it to what you want.

My environment is : Oracle 9.2.0.7
In "top sql sessions" I obtained that sql statement as below consumes many ressources.
When I use "SQL Analyzer" ... no recommandation was specified but I wonder if an index on function may be use to optimize this request.
I'd like to have your opinion on how to optimize this kind of request :

AND (trim(CUSTOMER.CLIENTS.POST_CODE)='12345')Yea function based index on trim(CUSTOMER.CARTES.CARD_NUMBER) and trim(CUSTOMER.CLIENTS.POST_CODE) might help.
BUT I suggest to correct data insertion app and insert already trimmed data in your table to avoid such ugly queries.

OO4O & VC++ Access Violation with large sql statement

Using Oracle C++ Class Library OO4O for Oracle9i Version 9.0.1.4.3 for
Windows 98/NT/2000/XP.
Open a dynaset with a large sql statemant more then 1000 chars you get
a Access Violation, like below.

ores = oDyn.Open( odb, szSQL, ODYNASET_READONLY || ODYNASET_NOCACHE);
The same sql query works without any problem in SQL Plus. A simple SQL statement works fine using OO4O.
Any ideas?

I am using Jboss 2.44 with tomcat3.2.3, and I get deployment problems when using jdk1.5, I also tried JBoss 4 but I also have lots of problems with that.
I have this huge system developed long time ago. I have problems with printing in jdk1.3 so upgrade to 1.4 or higher will fix the printing. Upgrading to jdk1.5 and JBoss 4 will need lots of rewrite which is not an option.
So to me it seems easier if I keep using jboss2.44 and tomcat 3.2.3 but just upgrade to JDK 1.4. All off this is just because jdk1.3.1 has printing bugs.
Bushwack, I am ding exactly like you are, the only difference is, ResultSet.CONCUR_UPDATABLE and I used , ResultSet.CONCUR_READONLY. But I tried and still the same error.
I will try using a new JDBC driver, hope it works, I am just struggling to find a free one

HOW TO: Post a SQL statement tuning request - template posting

This post is not a question, but similar to Rob van Wijk's "When your query takes too long ..." post should help to improve the quality of the requests for SQL statement tuning here on OTN.
On the OTN forum very often tuning requests about single SQL statements are posted, but the information provided is rather limited, and therefore it's not that simple to provide a meaningful advice. Instead of writing the same requests for additional information over and over again I thought I put together a post that describes how a "useful" post for such a request should look like and what information it should cover.
I've also prepared very detailed step-by-step instructions how to obtain that information on my blog, which can be used to easily gather the required information. Execute Stored Procedure SQL Statement with Parameter from Cell

I would like to know if there is a way to pass the parameters to SQL Statement of Power Query. For example, I have a SQL Statement as follows:

I would like to know if it is possible to pass the @Report, @Year, @Period values from cells in the workbook, preferably without vba.

Some notes:
You have to reference the excel query from another step in the query or you will get the following error:
Formula.Firewall: Query <>something<> references other queries or steps and so may not directly access a data source. Please rebuild this data combination.
I only did the parameter for one value.

SQLException: Closed Connection, SQL state [null]; error code [17002]

Hello All,
I am supporting a Java 5 project on Tomcat. We've used Spring and Stored Procedure in the project.
Recently we deployed our application in a GoLive environment and have started seeing Timeout errors in log files. After around two days we also have to restart Tomcat as users are no more able to login to access the application.
Same application runs fine without any timeout issues on another environment.
The only difference between two environments is that the Go-Live env has a firewall between Tomcat and Database and the other environment hosts both Tomcat and Database on same machine (i.e. no firewall).
For GoLive env the only port open on firewall for JDBC connection is 1521 and is used in the connection string url for obtaining the connections.
When there is a Timeout error, the N/w admin guy observed that the JDBC connection was not attempted on 1521 port, but on some random port which is not open on firewall, due to which the Database server logs also do not show entry for this connection attempt as it gets blocked by the firewall.
I am not sure why a randam port should be used to connect when a specific port is mentioned in the connection url? Also what can be making this port switching?
Application uses Apache DBCP with Spring to obtain connections.
Has anyone experienced similar errors?
Any suggestions/help on this issue is greatly appreciated!

Possible to do "grant" sql statement in Native SQL?

We have a need to do a grant of access from one of our systems out for various applications. In order for this to work we need to run a grant access command on the table and are trying to put a wrapper around this so we can use an abap. Below is the code I am unit testing. Two questions. First, can a grant be done via native SQL in abap? Second, if it can be done, what is the error with the logic where I am trying to put in the table name via a parameter.

Yes it is posible.
I made one program like you want. But it need very long code.
Here I explain the idea:
1. Create Screen with input TEXT EDIT CONTROL.
 This is for input SQL Statement.
2. Get SQL Statement from Text Edit Control using method get_text_as_r3table.
3. Now we need to separate SQL Statement into different table.
 We Separate SELECT, FROM, WHERE, GROUP, HAVING, ORDER, etc.
4. We need dynamic internal table to store the data.
5. Select the data according SQL statement.
 SELECT (IT_SELECT)
 into corresponding fields of table <dyn_table>
 FROM (IT_FROM)
 WHERE (IT_WHERE)
 GROUP BY (IT_GROUP)
 HAVING (IT_HAVING)
 ORDER BY (IT_ORDER).
6. Display our data using ALV GRID

Using Date objects in SQL statements

Hi, I am wondering if it is possible to use Date objects while trying to retrieve entries from an access database with fields set as "Date/Time" fields, as opposed to "Text"? If so, do I need to reformat it before inserting it into the SQL statement, or can I just leave it as a Date object, and call up the variable name?
For example - "SELECT * FROM database WHERE startDate = ' " + dateObject + ' ". And do i need quotes round this value?

I had some problems by just fetching a date and pushing it back to a MS SQL Database.
I used the following reformating step to fix it:

o is the object i receve from the select statement and ht is a Hashtable where i put my data.
To write the data back i now can use:
UPDATE table SET columnname = 'valueOfColumn'
This means i use the value i created above in Quotes to write it back.
Format of Timestamp.toString() is something like yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm:ss.xx
Format used by MS SQL (and i think by Access to) 'dd.mm.yyyy hh:mm:ss'

Date format in SQL statements

Hi there !
Please, can anyone help me find out what is going on with date format in my SQL Statements ?
While in development, the date format in SQL statements were:
SELECT DATA_FIELD FROM TABLE WHERE DATE_COL = '10-DEC-2004'
And works fine.
After deploy to production server, we get ORACLE error: not a valid month
So we change the format to
SELECT DATA_FIELD FROM TABLE WHERE DATE_COL = '10/12/2004'
And it gets to works again.
Yesterday, the net administrator updated the JAVAC / JSDK run-time with Java update tool, and AGAIN we get ORACLE error: not a valid month
So we change the format AGAIN to
SELECT DATA_FIELD FROM TABLE WHERE DATE_COL = '10-DEZ-2004'
And it gets to works again.
What is going on ?
JAVAC running on Windows2003.
The application access the ORACLE DB directly through JDBC.
There is no APPLICATION SERVER, like TOMCAT.
The regedit (windows registry) ALWAYS was and are now :
NLS_DATE_FORMAT = DD-MON-YYYY
NLS_LANG = AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8ISO8859P1

Somewhere, I'm willing to wager your NLS_DATE_FORMAT was/ is being changed. This is a client-side setting. Are you sure that the setting is the same on every client machine.
This is one of the reasons that it is considered bad form to rely on implicit conversion. If you wrap your string literal in a TO_DATE, use the JDBC escape sequence {d }, or use a Date bind variable, you don't have this problem. The bind variable approach will also play much more nicely with your database's shared pool.

SQL Issue with MS Access

Hello;
I have an SQL query:
Select year, sum(group1) as A from table1 where name in ('test1', 'test2') group by year;
When I run it through SQL editor in MS Access it returns the years and sum and a total of 5 rows.
When I pass this command through Java: Connection.createStatement and executeQuery
I can print the values and it prints 5 rows but after printing it hangs.
When i get the size of result set :
while(rs.next())
resultSetSize ++;
System.out.println(rs.getInt(1) + "\t" +resultSetSize);
It shows the result set as size of 10, when i print the values it stops at 5. I am not sure where the issue is.
I think since my where condition is have 2 values it might be causing problem.
If I just put 1 value after my where condition, then the java code runs fine.
Can anyone tell me what the issue is here or where am I going wrong?

Thanks for the suggestion. I checked the code. Indeed I was not printing an exception. When I printed the exception this is what i get:

SELECT is an Open-SQL-statement for reading data from one or several database tables into data objects.
The select statement reads a result set (whose structure is determined in result ) from the database tables specified in source, and assigns the data from the result set to the data objects specified in target. You can restrict the result set using the WHERE addition. The addition GROUP BY compresses several database rows into a single row of the result set. The addition HAVING restricts the compressed rows. The addition ORDER BY sorts the result set.
The data objects specified in target must match the result set result. This means that the result set is either assigned to the data objects in one step, or by row, or by packets of rows. In the second and third case, the SELECT statement opens a loop, which which must be closed using ENDSELECT. On the application server, the data are transferred to the ABAP program´s data objects in accordance with the data specified in the INTO and APPENDING additions.
System Fields
The SELECT statement sets the values of the system fields sy-subrc and sy-dbcnt.
sy-subrc Relevance
0 The SELECT statement sets sy-subrc to 0 for every pass by value to an ABAP data object. The ENDSELECT statement sets sy-subrc to 0 if at least one row was transferred in the SELECT loop.
4 The SELECT statement sets sy-subrc to 4 if the result set is empty, that is, if no data was found in the database.
8 The SELECT statement sets sy-subrc to 8 if the FOR UPDATE addition is used in result, without the primary key being specified fully after WHERE.
After every value that is transferred to an ABAP data object, the SELECT statement sets sy-dbcnt to the number of rows that were transferred. If the result set is empty, sy-dbcnt is set to 0.
Notes
Outside classes, you do not need to specify the target area with INTO or APPENDING if a single database table or a single view is specified statically after FROM, and a table work area dbtab was declared with the TABLES statement for the corresponding database table or view. In this case, the system supplements the SELECT-statement implicitly with the addition INTO dbtab.
Although the WHERE-condition is optional, you should always specify it for performance reasons, and the result set should not be restricted on the application server.
SELECT-loops can be nested. For performance reasons, you should check whether a join or a sub-query would be more effective.
Within a SELECT-loop you cannot execute any statements that lead to a database commit and consequently cause the corresponding database cursor to close.
SELECT - result
Syntax

Effect The data in result defines whether the resulting set consists of multiple rows (table-like structure) or a single row ( flat structure). It specifies the columns to be read and defines their names in the resulting set. Note that column names from the database table can be changed. For single columns, aggregate expressions can be used to specify aggregates. Identical rows in the resulting set can be excluded, and individual rows can be protected from parallel changes by another program.
The data in result consists of data for the rows lines and for the columns columns.

Effect
The data in lines specifies that the resulting set has either multiple lines or a single line.
Alternative 1
... SINGLE
Effect
If SINGLE is specified, the resulting set has a single line. If the remaining additions to the SELECT command select more than one line from the database, the first line that is found is entered into the resulting set. The data objects specified after INTO may not be internal tables, and the APPENDING addition may not be used.
An exclusive lock can be set for this line using the FOR UPDATE addition when a single line is being read with SINGLE. The SELECT command is used in this case only if all primary key fields in logical expressions linked by AND are checked to make sure they are the same in the WHERE condition. Otherwise, the resulting set is empty and sy-subrc is set to 8. If the lock causes a deadlock, an exception occurs. If the FOR UPDATE addition is used, the SELECT command circumvents SAP buffering.
Note
When SINGLE is being specified, the lines to be read should be clearly specified in the WHERE condition, for the sake of efficiency. When the data is read from a database table, the system does this by specifying comparison values for the primary key.
Alternative 2
Effect
If SINGLE is not specified and if columns does not contain only aggregate expressions, the resulting set has multiple lines. All database lines that are selected by the remaining additions of the SELECT command are included in the resulting list. If the ORDER BY addition is not used, the order of the lines in the resulting list is not defined and, if the same SELECT command is executed multiple times, the order may be different each time. A data object specified after INTO can be an internal table and the APPENDING addition can be used. If no internal table is specified after INTO or APPENDING, the SELECT command triggers a loop that has to be closed using ENDSELECT.
If multiple lines are read without SINGLE, the DISTINCT addition can be used to exclude duplicate lines from the resulting list. If DISTINCT is used, the SELECT command circumvents SAP buffering. DISTINCT cannot be used in the following situations:
If a column specified in columns has the type STRING, RAWSTRING, LCHAR or LRAW
If the system tries to access pool or cluster tables and single columns are specified in columns.
Note
When specifying DISTINCT, note that you have to carry out sort operations in the database system for this.

The input in columns determines which columns are used to build the resulting set.

Effect
If * is specified, the resulting set is built based on all columns in the database tables or views specified after FROM, in the order given there. The columns in the resulting set take on the name and data type from the database tables or views. Only one data object can be specified after INTO.
Note
If multiple database tables are specified after FROM, you cannot prevent multiple columns from getting the same name when you specify *.
Alternative 2

Effect
A list of column labels col1 col2 ... is specified in order to build the resulting list from individual columns. An individual column can be specified directly or as an argument of an aggregate function aggregate. The order in which the column labels are specified is up to you and defines the order of the columns in the resulting list. Only if a column of the type LCHAR or LRAW is listed does the corresponding length field also have to be specified directly before it. An individual column can be specified multiple times.
The addition AS can be used to define an alternative column name a1 a2 ... with a maximum of fourteen digits in the resulting set for every column label col1 col2 .... The system uses the alternative column name in the additions INTO|APPENDING CORRESPONDING FIELDS and ORDER BY. .

TestStand Open SQL Statement does not support SQL's ORDER BY clause???

You've got to be kidding me...
It appears that the built-in TestStand Open SQL Step does NOT support the
"ORDER BY" clause in the SELECT statement, even though the documentation
says it does. Is this true?
I have an Open SQL Statement query:
"SELECT * FROM [MyTable] WHERE ([Batch ID]=1234)"
it works fine, returning a correct record count 120 records. If I change
the Open SQL Statement query simply by adding an ORDER BY clause, such as:
"SELECT * FROM [MyTable] WHERE ([Batch ID]=1234) ORDER BY [MyField] ASC"
it returns a record count of zero. I know that "MyField" exists in the
MyTable table and contains valid data. The
second query works fine in SQL
Server Enterprise Manager.
Am I missing something? Is it true that the TestStand Open SQL Step does
NOT support the "ORDER BY" clause? If not, what &#$!ing good is it and why
does the manual state it is supported? Is there any other way using just
the TestStand steps to order a database recordset on one or more fields?
Any help would be appreciated.

I've been doing some experimenting over the past couple of days. Simple,
one-table queries seem to handle the ORDER BY clause fine. Th
ings seem to
get messed up when I try multi-table queries with ORDER BY clause with the
TestStand database steps. I get no errors but the returned record counts
are always 0 with the ORDER BY and positive without the ORDER BY. The exact
same queries work fine in Visual Basic/ADO and the SQL Server Query
Analyzer.

Hmmm... yes data IS getting returned (at least on the two instances I just
checked), but the record count is always zero. I was not proceeding with
processing if the record count was 0.
Still... I don't know how to loop through the recordset without knowing how
many records there are an not eventually generate an error by passing EOF.
Is there another way using the TestStand database steps to determine a) the
number of records in the recordset or b) when I'm at EOF?
