SQLDeveloper stubbornly refuses to see my tnsnames.ora changes...
Win32 x86 32-bit running SQLDeveloper 2.1.1
Previously, I had a tnsnames.ora file in place with several hundred entries. SQLDeveloper worked fine.
Then I deleted that file and created a new tnsnames.ora file with only one entry.
When I try to define a new Database Connection (Connection Type: TNS), I still see all the old entreis under Network Alias. (Yes, I've quit and restarted SQL Developer).
I do not have a tnsnames.ora file in my home directory...in fact, the only one on the whole box lives in $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin (I searched ;-) I have setup a TNS_ADMIN environment variable...no change.
I suspect there is something cached somewhere, but I did a registry search for "TNS" and didn't find it.
I've since uninstalled the client and reinstalled it, and ran a fresh copy of SQLDeveloper...and it's still showing the old entries!
What am I missing? Some preferences/properties cache file somewhere? Is there a way in SQLDeveloper to say "go refresh your list of tns entries"?
Half progress...I found a small typo in the new tnsnames.ora that made it invalid. Fixing that made it load into SQL DEveloper and I was able to connect to the DBs in that tnsnames.ora.
BUT...it still shows all the old entries. My new entries are mixed in alphabetically with the old entries, despite the fact that my old entries are no longer in the current tnsnames.ora.

TNS_ADMIN not respected, or how do I get sql developer to see my tnsnames
When I installed sql developer at home with a 'static' tnsnames.ora file, sql-developer picked it up right away, and I was able to use the 'connect identifier' pull down menu.
However, at work, all of developer's computers have a TNS_ADMIN registry set pointing to a network share. Sql developer fails to recognize that. The purpose of this is central administration of the file (changes happen at least once a month)
Is there are a way to make it see our tnsnames.ora file? Is there are some kind of workaround (besides copying the file locally)
Thanks.Unfortunately, because SQL Developer is set up to allow an install without any local Oracle client, it is not wonderful at picking up some things from the local Oracle client when it is there - such as the TNS_ADMIN setting.
Assuming you are on an Windows box, rather than having your TNS_ADMIN set in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Oracle registry 'directory', you need to have a Windows environment variable set for TNS_ADMIN (it doesn't matter if this is a User environment variable or a System environment variable). I assume (but don't know) that on a Linux based version you need a Unix environment variable set.
For example on Windows XP, right click on My Computer and select the Properties menu option. On that page, select the Advanced tab and then the Environment Variables button. Then click on the New button (in either the System or User section) and enter the variable name TNS_ADMIN and the variable value that you are using in the registry (ie z:\orant\network\admin). -
SQL Developer can't see tnsnames.ora
Hiya. I hope someone can help with this. I installed Oracle instant client (basic lite) on my new Windows 7 machine (32 bit) - yeah, I know Windows 7 is not supported, but my gut feeling is that this isn't the issue I'm having.
I've put my tnsnames.ora file in the same folder as instant client (C:\program files\oracle\instantclient), have created a system environment variable TNS_ADMIN which points to that folder, and have added that folder to the system "path" environment variable. That should do it, right?
When I try to create a new connection in SQL Developer 2.1.0.63, and change my connection type to "tns", I don't see any database connections.
Troubleshooting ideas? Other ways to test that the needed Oracle files are installed properly?
Thanks! Here's how to debug where it's looking:

SQL developer cannot see connection info from tnsnames.ora file
Greetings All,
I have been using sql developer for a while. Currently on 3.0.04.34.
I have 16 database connections.
Everything was working fine until yesterday.
Today when I tried to connect to a database from the list of connections I am getting following error:
Invalid connection information specified. Verify url format for specified driver.
When I pull up the property for this connection -connection type is still TNS, Netwrok Alias is now greyed out and what was in Netwrok Alias has shifted to Connect Identifier.
When I try to create a new connection I do not see entry from tnsnames.ora file for the databse I am trying to connect to in the Network Alias drop down list.
I can connect to this database from sqlplus.
Has anyone seen this behavior? Does any one know the fix for this?
Thanks.Hi,
Maybe your preference settings got corrupted, or the Tnsnames.ora file got moved to somewhere SQL Developer can't find it.
Are you using either:
1. Tools|Preferences|Database|Advanced|Tnsnames Directory, or a
2. TNS_ADMIN environment variable
to point to your Tnsnames? Having one of those should enable the Network Alias drop-down list to get populated. Otherwise, if the values moved to Connection Identifier are correct, then you won't be to connect in that mode without also having an Oracle client installed with an 11.1 JDBC thick driver (ocijdbc11.dll).
If there is no issue with the Tnsnames. ora location, it might be a good idea to use Export Connections to make a backup of your connections. Then you can try deleting the connections from SQL Developer and re-importing them. Even if that doesn't fix the problem, you should be no worse off.

Gary

Tnsnames.ora file does not seem to load in SQL Developer
I've really tried my best to figure this out on my own ... through the Help, this forum, and Internet in general. I apoligize in advance for having to ask this, since I'm sure this is a common issue. This particular form entry was really close:
Database Connections will not load tnsnames.ora
But, I just can seem to figure out why, or where entries from my tnsnames.ora file are loading into SQL Developer.
- I have the TNS_ADMIN system environment variable defined to the directory where tnsnames.ora is stored - C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\client_1\NETWORK\ADMIN.
- I do not see a TNS tab as the forum entry above indicates anywhere in SQL Developer - This may be my problem.
It seems that this issue could be cleared up with better directions on how to import tnsnames.ora entries into SQL Developer. Is there any specific direction on how to get your tnsnames.ora file setup correctly with SQL Developer running on Windows XP - Besides the Help which mentions the setup of TNS_ADMIN, but doesn't really tell you what the expected result is, or where the entries will be, or how to verify this is working?
Any help would be most appreciated.
Thanks,
Dave

After testing in our environment, it appears that SQL Developer 1.5.1 (5440) does in fact ignore the TNS_ADMIN environment variable and ONLY looks in the Oracle Home directory (network/admin). We define a central network location for our tnsnames file and have the tns_admin setup to point there instead of locally for our users.
When selecting to add a new connection (in 1.5.1, it works in previously releases... meaning 1.2.something) and selecting TNS, the drop-down remains empty. However, if I exit SQL Developer and then copy the tnsnames file to the local network/admin directory I can then re-launch SQL Developer and the drop-down is populated. Exiting SQL Developer again, deleting the local copy of tnsnames, and then launching SQL Developer yet again results in the drop-down being empty.
All other Oracle-related applications function as expected (as they have for years) using the TNS_ADMIN environment variable.
Any suggestions/ideas? -
Not all the connect strings are shown from tnsnames.ora
Hi Guys,
I am having a very strange problem. While trying to create a new connection in SQL Developer (I am using Version 1.1.2.25), and choosing " TNS " as connection type, I am just able to see 15-20 database entries, where my tnsnsames.ora contains more than 100 entries. And these 15-20 connect strings seem to have been picked randomly. So its like I am seeing the 1st entry, 4-8th entry, 20-24th entry from the tnsnames.ora.
Any idea what needs to be done?
ThanksmHi there,
I found what was wrong and would like to update it for the benefit of others. The tnsnames.ora was read upto all the entries which was in correct format. All the entries after the first incorrect entry was being ignored.
E.g. if you tnsnames.ora is having 100 entries and entry number 50 is in wrong format, then SQLDEVELOPER will only show entries upto 49. Entry 50th onwards will not be shown.
Hope this helps.

Cannot find tnsnames.ora error message
We are using oracle 10.2.0.1 via Toad. I get a cannot find tnsnames.ora file error message and see only a tnsnames.ora file in the sample file under the c:\ORACLE\product\10.2.0.1\NETWORK\ADMIN\ directory.
Do I need to create this file, and if so how do I do this?
Thanks in advance for your help

Connecting to Oracle database in Java using TNSNAMES.ora
I have a program that can connect to both MSSQL and Oracle databases. It works fine when a user has defined an odbc connection, however if the user only has a tnsnames.ora, I don't know how to code the program in Java to connect to the database. I can't hard-code the server name because I don't know the database up front - I need to be able to read tnsnames.ora to get the information instead. How can I get this information? So far, the object OracleDataSource seems to be getting me the closest, however I am still failing to connect.
In 10.2, JDBC-Thin supports TNSNAMES entries lookup in tnsnames.ora, resulting in a much simplified and driver type independent Oracle Net descriptor. You must set the system property oracle.net.tns_admin to the directory that contains your tnsnames.ora file.
See the Oracle JDBC 10.2 doc.
Here is a code fragment from my book (see my blog below)
java -Doracle.net.tns_admin=$ORACLE_HOME/network/admin
or:
System.setProperty("oracle.net.tns_admin", "c:\oracle\net\admin");
OracleDataSource ods = new OracleDataSource();
ods.setTNSEntryName("tns_alias");
ods.setUser("scott");
ods.setPassword("tiger");
ods.setDriverType("thin");
Connection conn = ods.getConnection();

Location of tnsnames.ora for Tora and Oracle XE Client
I Googled far and wide and did not see a CLEAR answer to my question, hopefully this will help others.
I have installed the debian oracle-xe-client and tora packages (tora rebuilt for oracle) on Ubuntu 8.04.
However, I did not know where I was supposed to place the tnsnames.ora file for my databases. I have tried running Tora with the environment variable of TNS_ADMIN set to the file where I placed my tnsnames.ora, however that did not work as Tora did not 'see' the file or its entries apparently. I know this works because I copied it from a Debian Etch box with the client and server installed.
I had even added a 'network/admin' directory structure to the //usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/client (ORACLE_HOME) with the tnsnames.ora but also with no success.
Now for the solution:
Simply remember that TNS_ADMIN points to the directory where the tnsnames.ora is and it will work. :)
I do have a suggestion that both Tora and sqlplus use a config file to set these directory(s) in addition to the overriding ability of the environment variable, TNS_ADMIN as is usually the case with UNIX apps (and thus expected).
Thank you,
JasonThe ODBC Instant Client Readme that is included in the install also indicates that %ORACLE_HOME%/network/admin/tnsnames.ora is the correct default location. What about OCI?

DNS vs. Oracle Name Service vs. tnsnames.ora
Can anyone shed some light on this?
I heard that Oracle is going toward a DNS solution and going away from
tnsnames.ora and the Oracle Naming Service. Is this true?
We are looking to place a naming solution in our environment and I want to
know which direction to head in. Also, if possible, I would like users to
only see the databases they need to see, which is the main problem we have
right now using a global tnsnames.ora file. Limiting users' views to only
what they have a business need to see is an important step in many steps to
secure the environment. I don't see how this would be accomplished using
DNS.
Comments?
Thanks,
Paul
nullBecause of your sqlnet.ora (In the same directoty than the the tnsnames.ora).
In this parameter file, you find the "NAMES.DEFAULT_DOMAIN" (Default value = world) wich is used by Oracle to complete your input.
The default value "World" is also in the sample init/pfile as the default domain. -
Problem with TNSNAMES.ORA (urgent)
Dear Freinds,
I am trying to run my Forms(6i) on the Form server , but as I try to login to the database to run the form I am getting an error 'ora-12154 : TNS could not resolve the service names' . I have checked the local TNSNAMES.ORA file and it has the entry for my Oracle SID , (my local machine registry has also been changed).
Please tell me if I am missing to set anything .
Thanks in advance .Hellow There,
Go to services,i.e: Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Services.
There is a service nam:
OracleTNSNames80
Right click on it and then click "START".
If this could not solve, then go to Oracle Net8 and try to configure "Database location" and/or "Listener Location" and see what happen in the Listener node.
If this did not help, you would go to www.Informit.com -> Free Library.
and navigate through the Library to a free electronic book:"teach u r self Oracle8 in 21 days" .. good book.

1.2.0 reads TNSNAMES.ORA file multiple times and duplicates values in Alias
Since upgrading to 1.2.0.29.98 (clean install on Win XP SP 2), I have noticed that SQL Developer appears to be reading the TNSNAMES.ORA file multiple times. This results in the Network Alias pop-list on the TNS connection type to have duplicate values, although the number of duplicates for each entry varies widely - from four for the least that I saw and 252 for the most (assuming I counted that right :) ). We have approximately 270 entries in our TNSNAMES.ORA and the first entry in the file appears in the Network Alias list four times and the last entry in the file appears in the list 48 times.
To be honest, I switched to Basic JDBC connections with 1.1 and only noticed the problem because of some network performance issues - I thought that SQL Developer had hung and I switched on the debugging and could see that it was looping through the TNSNAMES.ORA file. Now that the network performance issues have been resolved, it still takes a little while to open the new connection window, but it is liveable, so I don't know whether the problem is 1.2 specific or not.Sue,
I assume from a bit of testing, that "each tns file on the system" means each file in the TNS_ADMIN location that starts with TNSNAMES.ORA.
I set my TNS_ADMIN to a local location and copied the current TNSNAMES.ORA from the network location (and chopped it down to a handful of entries). When I restarted SQL Developer I only had a single copy of each alias. If I copied TNSNAMES.ORA to "Copy of TNSNAMES.ORA" I still only had a single copy of each alias. If I copied TNSNAMES.ORA to TNSNAMES.ORA.TXT I then had two copies of each alias.
Unfortunately, I don't have any say in the maintenance of the network TNS_ADMIN location and it has almost 200 backup copies of the tns file, typically named TNSNAMES.ORA.YYYYMMDD.
My TNS_ADMIN setting is done as a Windows environment variable. I do not have any TNS_ADMIN setting in my registry. -
Import tnsnams.ora in SQL developer on Mac OS
Hi, I am moving from PC to Mac and am installing SQL developer on Mac OS. I want to import tnsnames.ora ( that I used in toad ) to SQL developer. I looked it up and everyone seems to say drop tnsnames.ora to /etc, sql developer will pick it up. However I don't have root access to /etc directory.
What can I do to import tnsnames.ora
Thanks! You can put tnsnames anywhere you like and specify it via the TNS_ADMIN environment variable (though the next problem you will have is ensuring that the SQL Developer process can see that variable). The standard location is in network/admin under your Oracle Client installation. The reference to '/etc' is to do with database servers. You can put your own files in /etc if you want using sudo (it's your Mac), but I'm pretty sure that would not help here.
However it's news to me that SQL Developer can even use TNS name resolution. I thought it was all JDBC. Are you sure? -
DBA studio: Error add/connect database "Failed to parse tnsnames.ora file"
I have Oracle (version 8.1.7) installed in my XP machine and when I try to (having chosen "Launch DBA Studio standalone") to open a connection I get:
"Failed to parse tnsnames.ora file
ERROR: 100 -- NLNV-NLNV String Format Error".
Also got this when I tried to manually add a database to a tree.
I can access the databases listed in my tnsnames.ora using SQL Plus with no error.
This is my tnsnames.ora.

Does anybody have any idea what is wrong? Thanks a lot. ChangsongJust found out this IS a string error in my Tnsname.ora. What i did is deleting all the entries in my tnsname.ora, and start adding each one back. I found one particular entry is responsible for the error. This is the old text
serv32.xxx.ge.com =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (COMMUNITY = TCP)(PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = sevr32.xxy.ge.com)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA = (SID = atmo32))
just looking by itself I can't see anything wrong. I just formatted it a little, making it looked like the other one that is working
serv32.xxx.ge.com =(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS =
(COMMUNITY = TCP)
(PROTOCOL = TCP)
(HOST = sevr32.xxy.ge.com)
(PORT = 1521)))
(CONNECT_DATA=
(SID = atmo32)))
and now it works fine. I Really can't tell the difference, except that some words were moved to the other line. What puzzled me is that the same old tnsname.ora worked in almost all the other circumstances, like sql plus, and other database enginee. But it is just not good enough for dba studio?
I admit I probably should have used the network utility to add a connection to avoid this type of format error.
Anyhow, I'm glad it is solved. by the way, the symjct.dll mentioned in the previous post should be symcjit.dll. I guess he mispelled the name. I renamed it to symcjit_old.dll and now the java error was gone. So that is another gain from this post. Thanks Joel for all the information. -
Should dbassist create an entry in my tnsnames.ora file?
I just created an instance on Solaris with dbassist and the sample minimal.rsp response file (8.1.7). I was surprised to note that no entry was created in the tnsnames.ora file as I would expect (it does create an entry on Windows platforms). Is this typical behavior? I did not see any option in the response file to do this. Another thing I notice was that it created an entry in the oratab file with the auto start flag set to n. Is there a way to make dbassist set that flag to y during install or am I going to have to sed it afterwards?
Thanks,
John1. Do I have to use the external IP address in the LISTENER.ora
file if I want clients external
to the firewall to connect to my database? No, you should simple use the internal address - there's no need
to use the external address. The packets that reach the server
do not contain the external address by the time they get to the
server. The firewall performs NAT on the external address
translating it to the internal address on the way in and
translating the internal address to the external address on the
way out.
2. If I change the entries in the LISTENER.ora file from
<production> to <172.168.0.101>, then
clients cannot connect to the database. Is this a normal
thing? I remember that I could use
internal IP addresses in ORACLE7 and 8 in the LISTENER.ORA
file. There must be something wrong with your DNS. If you run the
command "ping production" what address do you get? The external
address? If you attempt to ping 172.168.0.101 from a client that
can not connect, what do you get? What if you run the
command "tracert production"? What path do the packets take to
the server.
There sounds like there is some network topology issues in that
the clients can't get directly to the internal address but are
instead going through the firewall to get to the database. I
would suggest using a sniffer on the database (with the
appropriate authorization) to see what's going on and get a
network admin involved.
