SRDemo with application pooling disabled

Hi Steve,
We are building an ADF BC/JSF application that can potentially have a high
number of visitors simultaneously.
So i took your advice on your blog
(http://radio.weblogs.com/0118231/2005/05/09.html) and tested our search
page with application pooling disabled. Unfortunately some functions of the
search page stopped working.
Then I tested the SRDemo application (ADF BC/JSF version) with application
pooling disabled. When application pooling is disabled the SRDemo
application does not work properly either.
So I am wondering...Is there a sample application that works with
application pooling disabled? Among others, I am particularly interested how
the following scenario would work:
1. The user enters a search criteria hits the search button and retrieves a
list of rows in a JSF table.
2. The user clicks one row in the table and he is navigated to a page where
he can view the details of the row he clicked
3. He hits the browsers back button
4. He clicks another row in the table.
5. He is navigated to a page where he can view the details of the last row i
clicked
6. He goes to step 3 and repeats the process as many times as he desires.
This simple scenario works in SRDemo in one context when application pooling
is enabled. It gives a row currency error in another at step 4. When
application pooling is disabled the application doesn't show any errors but
behaves incorrectly.
I would appreciate your insight on how to make this scenario work.
Thank you
Yalim

I am testing with 10.1.3.0. The change you suggested did not make any difference. The two scenarios I described in my previous post still do not behave correctly.
However I found out that the advanced search tab functions properly even without application pooling once the token validation is disabled. By that I mean that in the advanced search tab I can go through the 6 steps I described in my first post without getting any errors.
I also did some testing in 10.1.3.1. I downloaded SRDemo for ADF BC from the check for updates option in the menu. Then I ran the application with application pooling disabled. The 2 scenarios in my previous post did not behave correctly in 10.1.3.1 either. I must mention though; the behavior of the application was different.
On the other hand the advanced search tab seemed to be functioning properly.
It seems like when application module pooling is disabled, navigating to the details of a record in My Service Requests tab does not function properly whereas the same functionality works just fine in Advanced Search tab under the same condition.

  • Testing with AM pooling disabled

We are following the following guideline: “Test the ADF application with AM pooling disabled”:
I believe this forces the ADF application to do activation/passivation of app module instances.
This sounds like a good idea and I found a couple of bugs.
Question: is there a reason not to do so?
    Thanks
PS: To disable AM pooling: right click on application module file, select Configuration and then select Edit.
Click on the “Pooling and Scalability” tab and uncheck the “Enable Application Module Pooling” check box.

  • CF11 is crashing ( application pool suffered a fatal communication error with the Windows Process Activation Service)

I have a cluster of 2 IIS web servers on Windows Server 2008 R2. They had been running on CF10 for over a year (if not two) with no problems. I upgraded one server to CF11 and now that server is crashing while the CF10 servers is still running fine.
In the Windows event log I'm seeing 4 instances of this error:
"A process serving application pool '******' suffered a fatal communication error with the Windows Process Activation Service. The process id was '4652'. The data field contains the error number."
    Then finally:
"Application pool '******' is being automatically disabled due to a series of failures in the process(es) serving that application pool.".
Looking at the application pool in the IIS admin it is stopped. Restarting will resolve but it will eventually crash.
    What could be the issue?
    -Phil

I'm seeing in the CF logs leading up to the crash:

  • Monitoring of Disabled Application Pools and Websites

So we have a SCOM 2012 SP1 environment monitoring an IIS server that's Server 2012.  The IIS server has all of the App Pools that are not in use disabled as well the Default website is also disabled.  SCOM unfortunately still picks up that these
are unavailable and complains ad nauseum.
So the real quest is, is the disabled state going to be picked up eventually? (Now two days later the server objects themselves are Healthy, so I assume I can just close the alerts but ...)

    Yes, you can disable alerts of this specific object{Disabled application pools and websites}

  • Desktop Heap usage with 1 Application Pool running as Web Garden

We just upgraded our webserver from 2003 to 2012 R2. Originally we set it up as using 8 worker processes, which was good enough on our 2003 with 8GB memory. Since now in our new server we have 16GB, I increased the worker process to 16. It works fine until
we suddenly we got mysterious errors (NOTE: we don't change any web files during this migration.. all were working fine for 1 day, and suddenly the problem just appearing throughout the day). As a quick fix, we restarted the application pool, and we notice
strange errors in Event Viewer about Complus (Event ID 4689), which lead us to suspect it's Desktop Heap issue.
Could anybody please direct us on how to troubleshoot? We want to increase performance and use the memory more efficiently, but it will be hard if we do trial-and-error to find the good number of worker process to use.
FYI the application pool is set to use Application Pool Identity. We also keep all the registry settings as default (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\SubSystems\Windows\ SharedSection=1024,20480,768
    and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\WAS\Parameters\UseSharedWPDesktop=0)
    Thanks.

    This one might help.

I am creating console application which will check whether WCF is up and running. I am thinking of the approach whether w3wp prcoess is running for a particular application pool using some .net API. We have different website with different application pool.
I know we can use metatdata or any operation inside WCF service to test svcutil or proxy methods but i don't want that. Please help.
    Thanks,
    Dhanaji

I assume your goal is to simply provide a heartbeat to periodically make sure that a service is running?  There is no real guarantee that a service will be available until you actually try to call it.
Also please realize that you're going to impact the server's performance by doing this.  IIS is set up to idle out apps that aren't being used. If you periodically poll the service then you will prevent IIS from doing this.  The result will be
that you'll see a WCF service running even if nobody every uses it.  Is this really what you want?  Hence if you have a lot of WCF services being checked then the server is wasting resources on services that might not be needed.
IIS doesn't work like a normal application.  It hosts your WCF service.  You should let IIS handle the lifetime of your service rather than using a heartbeat.  It would take a catastrophic failure for IIS to be unable to start a service when
a request comes in.  The app pool itself may be running even without the WCF app running. An app pool is a collection of apps so if any app is running then the pool is running.  Checking the pool tells you nothing about the apps in it.
You mentioned that you don't want to use IIS metadata or a proxy but that is the only 2 options you have.  Personally I would just hit the endpoint with a HttpWebRequest and verify you get a response but the IIS metadata would be a close second.

  • Problem with Application server

    Hi All,
I'm facing problem with Application Server. When I installed the appserver and started it.. It started with the message " server has been started and some services will run at back". But when I tried stopping it using the stop default server i got the message that there is no server running but when i saw in the task manager i cud see two process running 1) appserver.exe and 2) imqbroker(something).exe so eventually I had to kill it.
Now when I'm trying to start the application server again its giving me this message "CLI156 Could not start the domain domain1" and below is the log file attached if its of any help

    Thanks in advance

The VERY FIRST message in the server log gives you a hint as to what the problem might be. The server thinks you have spaces in your PATH to the application server. Therefore, the solution is to kill the server however you need to (task manager, whatever) and then reinstall it in a path that doesn't contain spaces. That's the low-hanging fruit here; if that doesn't work, well, then we will have to find some other solution.

  • Multiple application pools for ColdFusion possible in the same IIS website?

I would like to set up a single website with CFM11 under IIS8.5
In this website there are several CFM applications, each under a different "Application" subfolder. For security purposes, monitoring and separate maintenance shutdowns per application, these would all need their own "application pool".
However, this means that these applications should run under a different application pool than their website root node. In IIS this causes a 403.18 exception:
    HTTP Error 403.18 - Forbidden
The specified request cannot be processed in the application pool that is configured for this resource on the Web server.
    Most likely causes:
•An ISAPI filter or custom module changed the URL to run in a different application pool than the original URL.
•An ISAPI extension (or custom module) used ExecuteURL (or ExecuteRequest) to run in a different application pool than the original URL.
•You have a custom error page that is located in one application pool but is referenced by a Web site in another application pool. When the URL is processed, it is determined by IIS that that it should have been processed in the first application pool, not the other pool.
•The Web site has multiple applications configured. The application this request is configured to run in is set to run in an application pool that does not exist.
All works fine if the "applications" in the subfolders run under the same application pool as the website root. However that is not my preferred setup... The behaviour is consistent over all CFM-applications that I deploy, no matter how simple they are...
    Two questions:
    - is coldfusion actually looking to "higher" folders than I expect it to? (and can that be avoided)
    - any hints or experiences on how to avoid / solve this issue?

Here are the steps you need to follow:
When you create connector for your ColdFusion 11 website, you get the “Jakarta” as virtual directory added under your website in IIS. If you don't then add 'jakarta' as virtual directory in your website.
You need to right click on “Jakarta” folder and click on “Convert to Application”.
Select the new Application Pool of the Application (say Test) added under website (CF 11)
    Click OK. Restart IIS.
NOTE :  You need not to restart IIS as well however if you still face the issue after following the above steps then try to restart IIS.

    Thanks

  • Is there a way to disable/restrict access to Help Restart with Add-ons Disabled or just to Help altogether?

I have students who use Help>Restart with Add-ons Disabled to disable add-ons, reset things, and go into Safe Mode. I'd like to be able to disable their ability to do so. Is this possible? I am also using a product called Fortres 101, which is a file security application. I can use it to limit file access to read only or even no access. If there are certain files that Firefox uses to allow access to these options, then maybe I can use these file names and make them read only or no access.

Note that you would only have to hold down the Shift key while starting Firefox to start in Safe Mode.
Any restriction added via an extension can easily be bypassed by knowledgeable users.

  • NLB Web Front End (WFEs)servers & Clustering IIS Application Pool between the two WFEs

    Hi All,
I have just encountered a very bad experience in my Production environment. My topology is as follows: NLB WFEs, MOSS APP server, Cluster DBs, DCs.
NLB on the WFEs is working fine. However, for some unknown reason, one of my site under the Application Pool in IIS Manager was stopped on one of the WFE and the site was down. NLB did not redirect request to the second WFE server.
My question is: How can I make sites under the Application Pool highly available? If any site is in a stopped state, there should be a mechanism in place to redirect request to the Application Pool on the second NLB WFE.
    Kindly help and advise.
    Thanks all.

    Hi Noah,
The best way of knowing whether the Application pool is down is to monitor it.
Using appcmd, i can check the state of an application under the application pool.
I want to create a schedule task which will check the status of the application pool and in case the application pool is stopped, to send me an email as alerts.
Using Powershell and appcmd, can you guide me on how to do the above i.e I want to use Powershell with appcmd to check for availability of an application pool. If the status is stopped, send me an email as alert.
    Thanks.

  • Service Bus with WCF in IIS 8 with Application Initialization Issue

I’m running service bus 1.1 on premise locally and have it hooked into a wcf service using netMessagingBinding.
I installed Application Initialization and set Start Mode to AlwaysRunning for the application pool, and set Preload Enabled to true for the site.
I also have the appropriate <applicationInitialization> section in the web config where I added the service to an initializationPage.
The message gets delivered if I hit the endpoint in my browser, and even if I do an IIS reset, it still gets delivered, however I had to hit the endpoint first manually.
If I do a clean (or edit any of the wcf code files) and build, it won’t get delivered until I hit the endpoint.
I get similar behavior when I set a break point in the service and attach to the w3wp.exe process.
If I do a clean and build and set a break point in the service code, it has the open red circle that says breakpoint will not be hit, no symbols have been loaded for this document.
When I hit the endpoint, the open red circle gets filled, and the endpoint can be hit.
I’m guessing these 2 go hand in hand with what I’m seeing with the service bus.
Setting up Application Initialization fixes the issue if I restart IIS, it can continue to receive messages, however I first need to hit the endpoint.
I just don’t know how it handles the scenario when it first gets deployed (like when I do a clean and build).
I thought the Application Initialization would of handled this but I’m probably missing something.

    Hi sir,
Form your description, it seems that you use the op-premise service bus. I will move this thread to Azure Pack forum for more helps.
