SSD Maintenance

  How Trim Works -
The OS sends a TRIM command at the point of file deletion
The SSD marks the indicated locations as invalid data
TRIM Features:
► Prevents GC on invalid data
► Increases the free space known to the SSD controller
TRIM Benefits:
► Higher throughput – Faster host write speeds because less time writing for GC
► Improved endurance – Reduced writes to the flash
Lower write amplification – Less data rewritten and more free space is available
The OS tracks what files are present and what logical blocks are holding the files
SSDs do not understand the file structure of an OS; they only track valid data locations reported by the OS
When the OS deletes a file, it marks the file’s space in its logical table as free - It does not tell the drive anything
When the OS writes a new file to the drive, it will eventually write to the previously used spaces in the table
An SSD only knows data is no longer needed when the OS tells it to write to an address that already contains data
All SSDs will have some form of GC – it is not an optional feature
NAND flash cannot directly overwrite a page with data; it has to be first erased
One full block of pages has to be erased, not just one page
GC starts after each page has been written one time
Valid data is consolidated and written into new blocks
Invalid (replaced) data is ignored and gets erased
Wear leveling mainly occurs during GC
Garbage Collection (GC) is the process of relocating existing data, deleting stale data, and creating empty blocks for new data
TRIM SSD and GC
The SATA 3.1 specifications Queued Trim Command - allows SATA SSDs to execute Trim without impacting normal operation...
http://www.sata-io.org/technology/6Gbdetails.asp
Wikipedia SSD:
"includes support for the TRIM command to reduce garbage collection for data which the operating system has already determined is no longer valid. Without support for TRIM, the SSD would be unaware of this data being invalid and would unnecessarily continue to rewrite it during garbage collection causing further wear on the SSD."

Russ Arcuri - Macintouch commentary
RE: Michael Diehr's commentary about TRIM.
I can only assume Michael was not around for the previous discussions about TRIM here, during which each and every objection he raises was hashed out.
So-called "sophisticated" or "advanced" garbage collection only exists because TRIM-like technology didn't exist already, being unnecessary for use with spinning magnetic media. Something had to be done to allow SSDs to work properly with drive interfaces, filesystems and operating systems that were optimized for use TRIM directly addresses the shortcomings of having only garbage collection available. SSD controller manufacturers and designers (including SandForce, the controller manufacturer for OWC's SSDs), recommends that TRIM be used with their products. So does Samsung.
For example, here's a 2011 article from OWC describing how you don't need TRIM on their SSDs and how it can in fact hurt performance or reliability.
That article has been discussed here on MacInTouch before. In my opinion it's bad advice, and inaccurate in some of its assertions. It also ignores the recommendation made by SandForce to use TRIM with their SSD controllers. But even if one were to take that article at face value, applying that advice to SSDs other than OWC's makes little sense.
The reason I'm advising against TRIM is simply that it's yet another driver-level modification of the OS, and these always carry potential risk (as all the folks with WD hard drives who lost data can attest to).
Apples and oranges comparison, for a variety of reasons. The short of it is that TRIM is supported natively in all recent versions of OS X. The tools used to enable it for third party SSDs do not add a new kernel extension; they change the setting to allow Apple's native TRIM implementation to be used with SSDs other than those factory installed by Apple.
This shows that the 840s do work slightly better with TRIM than without, but the differences are (in my opinion) trivial, a 9% increase at best.
One of the major reasons for the skepticism that exists about TRIM is that so many people, the authors of both articles you linked to included, don't understand it.
TRIM is not, strictly speaking, a performance-enhancement technology -- though it is plainly obvious that most people think it is.
Though it can, in many circumstances, improve performance, there are also circumstances under which it will provide little or no noticeable benefit. Not coincidentally, a new SSD tested fresh out of the factory packaging is unlikely to show much (if any) benefit. Or rather, TRIM is providing a real benefit for new SSDs, but that benefit doesn't become measurable in terms of benchmark performance testing until every memory cell in the SSD -- including many gigabytes of cells hidden from visibility by the SSD controller -- have been written to at least once. Writing 128 GB of files to an SSD with a nominal capacity of 128 GB won't do it, as there are several gigabytes (exact number varies depending on the model) still unwritten.
Under real-world use conditions, having TRIM disabled means eventually having noticeable write performance degradation due to write amplification. It is far greater than "9%" -- it can be a 50% or greater drop in write performance, depending on various factors. Defining "eventually" is difficult because it depends on how the SSD is used. But given enough time and write cycles, it can happen to all SSDs used without TRIM, no matter how sophisticated their garbage collection algorithms are.
Under those same real-world use conditions, having TRIM enabled means that the SSD should almost never reach a state of having noticeable write performance degradation, as it should almost never get into a state where write amplification is happening.
I will concede that it is possible to design a lab test in such a way as to defeat the benefits provided by TRIM, but such tests do not reflect any real-world usage scenario I can imagine. Furthermore, those same contrived tests would put an un-TRIMmed drive into an equally-addled state even more quickly.
I would suggest reading through the rather lengthy previous discussions about TRIM. Here are a couple of my past posts that are most relevant to the current discussion:
A description of what TRIM is here.
I addressed some of OWC Larry's comments about TRIM use with OWC/SandForce SSDs here.

  • Installing three SSD drives on Mac Pro

    Hello,
I followed the advice given here and bought 3 Samsung 840 SSD drives for my Mac Pro. Two of them are 120GB and one is 250GB.
I also purchased a Tempo SSD Pro 6GB/s SATA PCIe Drive. Only one of them (that holds two SSDs.)
    I plan on using:
         • one SSD for the OS and APPS
         • one SSD for a PS scratch disc
         • one SSD for the photoshop, premiere pro, and after effects files I'm currently working on.
I figured I'd keep the 1TB HDD currently used in the computer to store all my other files.
I also have a 1TB seagate extrenal HDD that I would like to set up as a back up or time machine.
    Does this sound good?
If so, which SSD do I install in my regular sliding drawer bay? I have 2.5" - 3.5" adapter.
Which two do I install on the PCIe card?
Which on do I use for what?
As you can see I'm clueless. Lol
Here are my specs before adding the SSDs.
    Mac Pro
    Mid 2012
Processor  3.33 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory  48 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 ECC
Graphics  ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.4 (12E55)
Storage  1TB Sata disc (423.26GB free),
1TB External USB Disk freeAgent GoFlex Drive (988.58 free)
P.S. I'm unsure about being able to install my current O.S. on the new SSD. When I bought the Mac Pro it had an older version of OS on it with a free download of the new OS. So the disc will only have the older version. Will I have to pay for the newer one or can I somehow copy it from the current HDD drive it's installed on?
Thank you so much. You have already been a HUGE help in the past posts and look forward to your wisdom.  8 )

Clone the system to the SSD you plan to use for system.
How much disk space is your system using now? w/o incl. anything in /Users, so just system.
If your system uses 60GB you want to use the 240GB SSD.
I think 120GB is on small side for scratch alone.
move projects to scratch array when you want to work on them:  "Work disk + scratch" is fast. Then move them off the array, erase the array, and start a new project.
I would try the 2 x 120 SSDs on PCIe 6G as scratch and see how it feels and works.Try and test.  No harm. I think that is what most people do, they experiement and try out different setups to find the one that works best for them.
Important: Have a clone of the system and be ready to restore or move it around as needed.
    Install TRIM Enabler of course.

Samsung recommends setting aside 10% for over-provisioning.
Their Windows utility, shame there isn't a Mac version.
#2: Try system on 120GB in drive bay with an adapter
With that then use the other two on the Tempo.
Those could be one large 360GB volume JBOD.
You will have to see how much your scratch space gets used.
    I would have argued for 3 x 240GB SSDs. More flexible. Better SSD design - slightly. Adds $140 to the price, even if you had to wait to get 3rd one;
#3  get 2 x 240GB for scratch and projects and 1 x 120GB for system (if your system is less than 50GB)
I doubt you will find the difference of the system on the Sonnet Tempo a deciding factor.
The Sonnet Tempo Pro is for higher I/O RAID, both Tempo cards support 2 x SSDs (I have the cheaper one)

PS: You have Mountain Lion. Buy Carbon Copy Cloner and it will clone the system and create the recovery volume also so you should not need to redownload 10.8.x - and you do not need the DVD with 10.6.4 again.

  • Mac Pro Missing Serial Number after SSD install

After installing a new SSD in an unused bay in my Mac Pro (OS 10.8.4) and setting it as my start-up disk with only System, Apps, Library and Users Folders on it, I have had a remarkable improvement in performance - things simply snap open now & I have not seen a spinning beachball/cogwheel until....
Messages will not work now - on opening, the program asks me to enter my Apple ID & Password but will not accept the entries (which I have double-checked & confirmed on my Mac Book Pro, iPad & iPhone) - I get a prolonged spinning cogwheel & then a message that it could not connect and I should check my Network Connections - I did & they are all working fine for other programs.
On line sources indicate that the iMessage Registration process involves the Mac's Serial number.
This no longer appears under the About This Mac Menu item when I click on the Version 10.8.4 line (the Build Number does appear).
This 4 year old Mac Pro has never had the Logic Board replaced.
And iMessages worked great prior to the SSD install.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    ...John

you cloned the system? used Migration or Setup Assistant?
I doubt it has anything to do with the SSD.
But you might include what you did, what make of SSD even, and some brands (but not Samsung) would need firmware update.
You also need to use TRIM Enabler on any and all SSDs (unless you paid dearly and bought an Apple device).
Before you clone, install TRIM Enabler!
And after you clone, run Disk Utility's REPAIR DISK on the SSD -- just to be on the safest side.

try creating a new user account. I doubt it is the SSD, or you, though it could be your OS install or just the common issues with iMessages. Is there not a forum for it? I'd think there would be.

  • SSD's which are OK for updating firmware on a Mac?

I'm looking at a couple SSD's for a MacPro, any thoughts on which are OK with updating firmware on a Mac? Probably better to ask now before I need to..
Crucial M500 or Samsung 840 Pro?  I'm assuming that OWC's offerings are probably the best for Mac compatiblity, any others?
    thanks in advance.

Firstly there is a near identical question about setup of just days ago that hopefully you found and looked at in your research.
System on SSD / scratch for CS6 / projects
Lloyd's blog is full of tips: http://www.macperformanceguide.com
Start with what SSD (single) then get into multiple and setup and apps and how they are used, which really might be first thing to ask?
The Pro uses highest quality but both have much of the same controller and firmware - and it was just reviewed as to what the diference is. Find and read that.
Rick over on MacGurus setup an old working model for PS: a scratch disk + working project files is the fastest - was done with SCSI and then the first 10K SATA Raptor. Probably still holds true.
No you are not limited - I strongly suggest you set it up on Sonnet Tempo Pro RAID card and then use one 250GB 840 to start with, then add 2nd. Use one of the PCIe slots for your SSD(s). Maybe start with a 500GB.
Maybe use JBOD to combine two but not in RAID0.
The system can go on SATA II drive bay or optical bay.
Is there a one size fits all or to say this is the only way? of course not, you can though test and try and work with your budget, your Mac and move SSD to  where it does the most good.
Samsung starts mass producing PCIe SSDs with 1400MB/s read speeds
When the new MacBook Air got the teardown treatment... a new SSD.
The new drive is known as the XP941 and Samsung will offer it in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB configurations. It achieves read speeds of 1,400MB/s, which clocks it at 2.5x faster than a SATA SSD. It also only weighs 6 grams and measures 80 x 22mm. Samsung claims it only takes up a 7th of the space occupied by a typical 2.5-inch SSD.

    Samsung 840 Pro and Samsung 840 Solid State Drives Reviewhttp://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/storage/display/samsung-840-pro.html  [06/07/13 | Storage ]
Samsung currently offers very interesting solid state drives. Some boast outstanding performance, others – are built with inexpensive TLC NAND and come with a very appealing price tag. And our tests prove all of this: we are ready to discuss what we saw when we got our hands on a Samsung 840 Pro 256 GB and Samsung 840 250 GB drives.

I am sold on Samsung though and feel the 840 will do fine for me, but I would use $$ to get Sonnet Tempo SSD or Pro from OWC.

  • Can I move system from one hard drive to another?

I am using 10.6.8 on a Mac Pro dual quad core. My hard drive is failing and I want to put the contents including applications and system components on the new drive. I think I have Lepord disks and thought I had Snow lepard disk, but cannot find those. What do I need to do???

Clean install? you need the DVD.
Clone the system: you are fine and you can break it up like most here - system on one drive, data on 2nd
And... you need backups. Clone the system. Use TimeMachine. Have a strategy and redundancy so more than one place and copy. And rotate and buy new drives before they go and have backup and spare on hand.
Consider an SSD for the system, best $104 investment with return on performance.
    Clone
Disk utility has RESTORE which will also clone your system but not the Lion Recovery partition. Oddly  Apple did not 'endorse' making bootable clone of the system which works too but most choose Carbon Copy Cloner - it works more consistently; it allows for smart update of the backup volume. Both can backup to a sparse disk image if desired.

  • Aging Mac Pro constantly rebooting

My aging early 2008 Mac Pro is constantly rebooting, almost always when I'm away from the computer. When it reboots, I have to reset audio, which has defaulted to my MOTU Audio Express. The Mac Pro is exhibiting other odd symptoms: Occasionally, upon resumption from inactivity, the keyboard and mouse will have quit working. The Bluetooth Apple Magic Pad continues to function. A restart is the only fix. Also, occasionally, the Mac Pro will refuse to wake from sleep. Sometimes I must do a forced restart to get out of that. Other times, it will wake up on its own after a period of about 30 seconds.
It also seems to go into a harder sleep — rather than the monitors just lighting up as they usually do, it will hesitate a moment and the fans will cycle up loudly.
I was having similar issues months ago. I installed an SSD drive about six months ago, did a clean system install and migrated files over, and everything was working smoothly until the last week or so, and all the problems have resurfaced, with a vengeance. I reinstalled Mountain Lion, but that didn't help. I've considered another clean install or a Time Machine recovery from a month ago, but I really don't want to have to go through that every six months.
Any ideas? I'm half considering buying a new Mac Mini and using the pro as a file server or something.
Here is a copy of the report I get after the machine reboots.

Do you have TRIM Enabler? what SSD? how much free space? Have you ever done a secure erase and restore on the SSD? When you repair, are you booting from ML Recovery or from a full working system, a clone of your current system?
You might want a small 100GB volume somewhere with another clean install of ML 10.8.3 and with TRIM Enabler - I use my TimeMachine drive which has 800GB free. Also a 60GB sparse disk image of the SSD.
Putting your SSD on a PCIe 6G controller can help, though some have been known to cause corruption.
Repairing only touches the directory so it doesn't tell you if the entire file structure is okay.
A Safe Boot after repair is a good idea to do, then restart again.
How much faith do you have in the 8800GT? think it is time to replace and upgrade to a newer card, from Apple ATI 5770 or higher end AMD 7950 Mac Edition even.
Do you monitor system temps with something? how old are those FBDIMMs? Are they running 65* or less?
You should really have a clone and do a restore every 3 months or so. No need for TimeMachine method. Takes under an hour. And of course all your data is not on the SSD (well, the home library should which is  ~/Library where all mail and web and prefs are stored. But all data is not on SSD at all.

No reason or need for a Mini. Unless you want. Should be fine, though the 3,1's have been the most tempermental with Mountain Lion up until 10.8.3. And you might regret moving to mini if a new Mac Pro were to come out.

  • Please help - CPU trouble (mainly in Logic Pro).

    Hi,
I've had my Mac Pro for 3 & 1/2 years. It's a Quad-Core Intel Xeon 2.66 GHz with 12GB RAM and 3 640GB HDs. I know this spec is nowhere near the scale of other people's machines at this point in time, but it doesn't justify the speed mine runs at. I primarily use my Mac for music production, mainly in Logic Pro 9 and Sibelius 7.
Although it generally seems to be running quite slow, my biggest problem is when using Logic. I mainly compose orchestral music, using Eastwest Symphonic Orchestra Gold, Spitfire Albion I (via Kontakt), Ivory Synthogy Grands II and Spectrasonics Omnisphere. For the sake of this thread, I'll use the track I'm working on currently as an example...
I have 40 tracks with separate instances of Play (for Eastwest Gold) and Kontakt (Albion I) running. (I've tried multi-outputs, but the inability to Freeze tracks is rather obstructing.) There are also a few auxilliary tracks with Logic's compressor & Eastwest Spaces running - no more than 8 separate instances. I also have a 14-minute video running. Currently, I don't have many tracks recorded, but as they begin to build up, Logic just can't handle it - and that's running on 512 samples I/O buffer size and a 'Large' Process Buffer Range. What's more, if I load a single instance of Ivory Grands II in, about 1/7th of my CPU bar is consumed simply when it's idle. I hope this covers all bases, but you get the idea...
I've researched so much and tried it all - using Freeze tracks extensively; hardware test; disk utility; clearing my system HD, including moving my sample libraries to my other HDs (my main HD is currently at about 20% capacity); and probably a myriad of other things that I can't think of right now. As you can imagine, I've spent a lot of money on this system, and to be behaving like this after 2 years (this has been an ongoing problem for quite some time...) is extremely frustrating and upsetting.
Any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated — thank you.

He, the OP, does not appear to have a 3,1 Early 2008 at all.
Processor upgrades for those are fewer and harder to find and he would already have 8-core.
A copy paste of the system profile, minus serial number, helps.
Three SSDs, one for system, and two on Sonnet Tempo Pro PCIe SSD, would go a long ways.

For best performance on Mac Pro, install memory in risers symmetrically
The Mac Pro comes with two memory riser cards, each with four DIMM slots. With a total of eight slots, you can add up to 32 GB of memory.
Note: DIMMs must be installed in pairs of equal size from the same vendor. For instance, you must not have one or three DIMMs on either riser at any time. Additionally, two DIMMs from different vendors should not be combined and used as a pair.
Other configurations of DIMM pairs are still compatible with Final Cut Studio, but may not achieve the same performance levels as when DIMM pairs are installed on both risers evenly.

I was told that it takes about 10 years to outdate a MAC desktop, which I think is the case, but I have ran out of storage.  What is the best option?

There is no one best for everyong.
For most though: a dedicated boot drive. $105 Samsung 840 SSD is best in that category
WD Black in 1 to 4TB (1-4 drives) for up to 16TB of storage.
Sonnet Tempo Pro PCIe SSD card to boot from and boost SSD speed, as well as free up your drive bays for the other drives.
2-4 backup sets. One or two used for TimeMachine. Two or three clones of your system. Even clone your critical data.
And then there is external storage of unlimited size, capacity and expansion.
Upgrade your system drive every year or two and move the current drive to use as a backup set.

  • Mac Pro HD and Startup Woes ... AGAIN!

The latest in this saga has led to a real problem. Nothing happens after the chime!
After not using the machine for a month and having reinstalled a new hd, OSX etc the machine was taking forever to start up, shut down etc - as in several minutes!
And the Spinning Ball would appear every few seonds and linger forever. Now after doing a PRAM reset the machine will not start at all. NO keyboard commands do anything and I am stuck with a black screen after the chines.
Cannot access other OS's, (Option-CMD), Safe Boot, or any other keyboard commands at all. I can hear a drive spinning but there is just zero connection between the keyboard commands at all.
Before the latest problem I had used Activity Monitor and while I am no expert, there was no evidence of any real issues there - lots or RAM, little CPU hogging, low network activity, etc
Any magic bulltets to kick start this sucker into life?
    Thanks a lot
    Geoff

  • No clear explanation on multiple hard drive software configuration?

Sorry if there is already a thread on this, but I couldn't find a clear answer on it.  I just put a 60GB SSD in my bay 1 and put my 1TB in bay 2.  I want to use the SSD for apps and the OS and of course the 1TB for files.  Putting the apps on the SSD is already done, the only problem is none of the files are showing up when opening them.  I can still open the 1TB and all my files are there, but if I launch an application from it it still doesn't have the files.  I'm guessing I'm going to have to reference the other drive somehow (this is the part that wasn't explained clearly at all).
Or if anyone knows of a good video on how to do this its greatly appreciated since all youtube pulls up is installing two MacBook Pro hard drives.

Most apps have a preference for their media library.
    Alias and symbolic links work
you could relocate the home account.
60GB is small and cutting it short, even though you only used say 25GB
you willl need to use TRIM Enabler of course. 10% should be allocated to over provisioning also.
the free space should equal how much is written in the course of a month.
and be ready to erase and restore as needed, always have another drive with TRIM Enabler and have a disk image or restore image of the SSD handy.

To successfully relocate your operating system, user accounts and data from one storage device to another, meet the following conditions:
The destination storage device (SSD drive or hard drive) you are migrating to should be physically located in the same computer.  Moving operating system files from one computer to another computer using software not specifically designed for that computer can cause issues due to software, hardware, and firmware version mismatches.
Always back up your storage device with Time Machine or Disk Utility before you start.

  • X58A-GD65 for SATA III 6GB/s - MARVELL OR JMICRON?

    MSI and Forum members,
    (spec in sig)
Currently, have my SSD and a Hitachi HDD on the 2 SATAIII ports
There is no Storage controllers listed in my Device Manager.
I guess it's defaulting to IDE mode despite settings in BIOS?
SSD is running good and at speeds advertised and boots.
    HDD runs fine.
Was thinking if i should load a controller?
(i did before, and pretty much no noticeable difference)
If i load controller, which one should i load?
i've had instances of both on there and since have reloaded Windows 7 yet again.
Im not using RAID (obviously) on these 2 SATA ports at the moment,
but may try to in the future.
Welcome anyone's RAID experiences with either controller... as
it's more than my 0 ... just like my SATAII setting (hopefully will
be changed in the near future to 4xhdd RAID 5)
    Thank you for your time.

    Hi everyone...
THANKS A BUNCH For your replies...
learned a few things, but actually, some of this seem to conflict with what
i've read. so... now i got more Q's~!
Q1. How do i see if TRIM is working?
Q2. can i manually turn TRIM On/turn it Off ?
For SSD maintenance/preservation, every two weeks or so, i do
    - full backup with win7,
    - Clean All on my SSD drive
    - just restore my SSD drive only from the backup
(This way, if TRIM isn't working/isn't working well/cant tell what does or does not work
only on Sundays and sometimes on Tuesdays, i still remove the garbage.)
    Q3. Does this really work?
Quote from: Bas on 10-July-11, 09:35:25
AHCI is a bad setting for SSD, it makes it slower and it produces more commands on the BUS.
In fact the only thing AHCI is good for is hot-plugging, else don't use it if you don't need it.
    - following two questions are in reference to this quote
Q4. How come people keep saying to move the SSD off the SATAIII ports onto the SATAII ports?
(maybe this is just myth/hype? or maybe that is solution only when the SATAIII ports are not
    giving full performance?)
Q5. Does this AHCI "problem" also apply to regular HDD?
(I have a hot plug ready 3.5" drive bay for a 2.5" drive i can use at anytime so i set my SATAII ports to AHCI.)
Thanks AQUALAB for pointing out the Box and in conjunction with what Bas said about
    the AHCI/IDE setting
Quote from: aqualab on 10-July-11, 01:11:12
    from MSI :
    - Supports one SATAII port by JMicron® JMB362 (SATA9)
Q6. So i should probably connect my Hot Swap to this SATA9 port instead of one of my
    regular SATAII ports?
Q7. If i change my SATAII ports back to IDE ... will it break my RAID setup?
(this is not big deal at the moment. it was my boot drive for about 3 weeks, but right now,
im just running a few apps left on there after reloading win7 back onto my SSD but
im thinking about breaking it and setting up a bigger RAID5 and would like to have
at least all the BIOS part ready)
NOTE: if an admin wants to re-title my thread to "X58A-GD65 SATAIII-6GB/s: controllers/SSD/HDD questions" would be ok too
Thank y'all as always, i end up getting more answers here than out there in NeverNeverLand.

  • How do I perform maintenance  on my iMac SSD Drive so I can extend it's life

I recently purchased a Mid 2011 27" 3.4GHZ i7 /16GB Memory iMac and would like to know how do I perform maintenance  on my iMac SSD Drive so I can extend it's life, Does apple now support Trimm or is there some thing else I need to do? Defrag?  I do not store anything thing but OS and APPS on the drive
    thanks

There is nothing you need to do to the SSD. Do not attempt to defrag an SSD as there is no need and uses the device excessively. TRIM is supported only if the SSD is an Apple device so if you reformat the SSD there's no need to Zero Data for garbage collection.

  • What type of ssd does yoga pro 3 have?

Is it MLC or TLC? I heard people say yoga pro 3 uses sumsung SSD, and sumsung like using TLC which i dont prefer.

Samsung or LITE-ON, per the Hardware Maintenance Manual:
    http://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/lenovo_yoga_3_pro_1370_hmm.pdf
    I don't work for Lenovo. I'm a crazy volunteer!

  • Yosemite on 13" MBP(Mid 2012) running super slow on standard configuration. Is there a rock solid way that I can make it fast? or Yosemite is designed to work only on PCIe SSDs with 16GB RAM? Missing Steve Jobs :(

My 13" MBP MD 101 / A1278 / 9,2 / Mid 2012 is still in production and it is performing like a windows pc; super slow after updating it to Yosemite.I can't afford to upgrade its HDD to SSD and 4GB RAM to 16GB.
Tried everything found on internet, nothing got successful in making it fast as it was once with mountain lion. I hope I could have Yosemite's features and leopard's responsiveness and stability.
I think Apple guys have designed Yosemite only for SSDs only. They should design OS X according to every mac's different hardware, like if I have a spinning old hard drive it should mould itself to the capabilities of it and not demand responsiveness of an SSD.
Please do let me know if anyone have brilliant new idea other than found on the internet.

  • How to upgrade your notebook to a SATA 2.5" SSD

Method 1: Use a usb to sata cable and a cloning program for the simplest way to migrate your OS to an SSD. (see the image below)
Method 2: Remove the hard disk from the notebook. Put it and the target SSD in a desktop PC in spare available SATA ports.
Cloning programs like Samsung's Magician, Paragon's Migrate OS to SSD 4.0, and Apricot's EZ Gig IV will allow you to shrink the amount of data on the legacy hard disk to fit on the SSD.
The migration is normally seamless and simple and usually finished in about thirty minutes or less. The cloning software will prep the hard drive on its own with scripted powershell commands.
Connect the SSD to the sata connector and the USB end to a USB port on your notebook. Invoke the cloning program you have chosen to use.  When the cloning procedure is complete, all that you will need to do is replace the original legacy disk with the SSD. Enter the notebook's BIOS and set the SSD disk to the top of the boot list. Save the change, boot to your SSD and enjoy the performance boost. You won't believe that it is the same notebook
Method 3: A clean install of a Windows OS. Windows XP, Vista, 7 , 8 & 8.1 to the new SSD. This can be difficult if the OS is Windows 8 or 8.1. Newer notebooks have the license activation key in the BIOS as a SLIC code. The OS should activate automatically after installation wehn the notebook is online. The SSD will neeed to be prepped by use of the Windows Diskpart utility. Connect the SSD to an available sata port of a Windows desktop PC. Boot into Windows and invoke a command prompt. It is important to use the list disk comand to ensure that the target  SSD disk has an asterisk to its left which indicates that it has diskpart's focus. Otherwise you could inadvertently delete all information on the wrong drive.

2015 Microsoft MVP - Windows Experience Consumer

    HI @KINGxENVY,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
It is a terrific place to find answers.
For you to have the best experience in the HP forum I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide Learn How to Post and More
I grasp that you would like to install a 120GB SSD as the main drive and install the original 7750 in an external casing to use as storage.
You can use the recovery disk regardless of the size of the drive. The recovery manager requires the drive to be the same size.
Although a SSD is not listed as a supported drive in the   HP ENVY m6 Notebook PC  Maintenance and Service Guide, it just  means that HP has not tested an SSD in your system.
Here are some document that I believe will be helpful.

Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 8)
During the recovery you will notice an option to backup your personal files to prevent loss.  If you have not done one I suggest you do just to be on the safe side.
Restoring Files that were Backed Up Using HP Recovery Manager (Windows 8)
I realize you are retaining the original drive and the data on it, but I would still suggest doing the backup just in case.
    I hope this helps.
