Ssh to iMac from my PC with graphic applications

How can I ssh to my iMac from my window PC?
I am using SecureCRT + Xming to ssh to my iMac, but I could not open the graphic applications (e.g. xv) through ssh. (I can do it when ssh to a Linux machine though).
Do I have to setup something in my iMac machine?
Is there any window software (other than SecureCRT + Xming) that can help me to do that?
Thanks.

Generally speaking, you tunnel your X11 X-Windows session by starting the ssh session using the -X (capital X) or -Y (capital Y) ssh command line option. This establishes an X11 tunnel, and on the remote system associates your DISPLAY environment variable with the remote end of the ssh tunnel. Typically DISPLAY looks something like localhost:14.0
I do not know how to tell your SecureCRT + Xming setup to export your X11 display server's DISPLAY environment to Mac OS X.
I also assume you have an X11 display server running on your Windows PC.
Note: Terminal, Unix, command line (such as ssh) questions are best asked in the Mac OS X Technologies > Unix Forum

  • IMac 2009 (iMac11,1) with graphic errors (Radeon HD 4850)

    Hi all,
I own an iMac 2009 (iMac11,1) which yesterday evening started having graphic problems whilst I was playing a casual old school game on Steam, (Multiwinia actually).
The iMac now shows vertical lines across the screen, light blue on light backgrounds and red on dark backgrounds.
    Example Image Here
After digging around in the forums it seemed to me that I was far from the only one experiencing this, but that this also seemed to be a hardware problem, which made me very depressed since I do not want to shell out ~$300 for a "new" graphic card and don't want to buy a new iMac, since this is only used for web development. (Radeon HD 4850 price example).
So far I was only able to boot up my iMac in safe mode, otherwise it would stall at the Apple logo boot screen.
But then I came across this guide: Re: blue screen after startup and system hangs
And in my desperation I tried following the steps and all of a sudden I was now able to boot up in normal mode. However the vertical stripes are still present.
So, my question is basically. Am I experiencing a hardware - or software problem?
And, if it's a software problem, how can I fix it?
I have already tried disabling LCD font smoothing, resetting PRAM, SMC, repair permissions, and to re-install OS X but neither have worked so far.
I also tried this guide although not really related to my issue, but that didn't do anything either.
    My system info is:
I hope someone out there can help me fix my old beloved iMac.

It  is likely hardware and requires service. However before taking it in you can run Apple's Using Apple Hardware Test. Run AHT in Extended Mode at least 2-3 times back to back. You need to run it back to back multiple times because AHT does not always pick up hardware errors on the first (and sometimes 2nd) pass. However if it does detect errors, the error code is correct and confirms you have a hardware issue.
    Good luck.

  • How to reboot imac from grey screen with rotating icon?

    Hi
Can anyone help regarding the rebooting of an iMac 24"
I need help with my 24" iMac OS X 10.8.4. After the screen froze it was turned off at the mains. Now it won't reboot, just the grey screen with the spinning icon.
    Please advise.
    Regards,
    M

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
         a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
    b. If Step 1a fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
    c. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    d. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
If the startup process stops at a blank gray screen with no Apple logo or spinning "daisy wheel," then the startup volume may be full. If you had previously seen warnings of low disk space, this is almost certainly the case. You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use the technique in Step 1b, 1c, or 1d to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.
    Step 3
Sometimes a startup failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 4
If you use a wireless keyboard, trackpad, or mouse, replace or recharge the batteries. The battery level shown in the Bluetooth menu item may not be accurate.
    Step 5
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
    Step 6
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can start up now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
    Step 7
If you've started from an external storage device, make sure that the internal startup volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Start up in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know the login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you start up in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, the startup volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 10. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it immediately.
If you can start and log in in safe mode, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the startup process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 8
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select the startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then restart as usual.
    Step 9
If the startup device is an aftermarket SSD, it may need a firmware update and/or a forced "garbage collection." Instructions for doing this with a Crucial-branded SSD were posted here. Some of those instructions may apply to other brands of SSD, but you should check with the vendor's tech support.
    Step 10
Reinstall the OS. If the Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 11
Do as in Step 9, but this time erase the startup volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically restart into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer the data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 12
This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a startup failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 13
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

  • Can i use a iMac from 2008 with broken graphic card as extra monitor

Can i use My Old iMac as a extra monitor.  My Old iMac from early 2008 has a broken graphic card nvidia 8800 gs. When I start it up I hear the bong and see the symbol spinning then the screen goes black from right to left the computer is running but I can't use it. I assume it's the graphic card. Can I use this iMac as an extra monitor to my other iMac.?

    No sorry.

  • IMac crashes on startup or freezes with graphical glitches

    Hi,
My early 2009 24" iMac suddenly crashed a few days ago, while browsing on the internet with no major app running. It did so with graphical glitches, like coloured dots. Since then, it would always shut down suddenly every time I restart. It shuts down right after the Apple logo and the wheel, once even reaching the user selection screen for a second, then shutting down before I could even move.
I started it in safe mode and ran all the checks, it says the volume is fine. When checking disk permissions, it did give me a few error messages but let me do the repairs. Weird thing is when I ran the disk permission verification again it showed me the same permission, as if they hadn't been repaired.
Now I backup everything and tried to reinstall OS X but to no avail, it kept doing the same thing.
So I formatted the disk, zeroed it out and reinstalled Mavericks. Same thing keeps happening, which seem to indicate some kind of hardware failure, right?
On one occasion it did start up but after a few seconds it froze, with heavy glitches (see picture attached - sorry it's upside down but it doesn't make a huge difference anyway!).
I upgraded the iMac with new RAM a year ago or so, and 2 years ago it had a hard drive failure, so I replaced the HD. Never had any problems in general, apart from when I had to replace the HD of course. It's always been very stable and well behaved.
Any idea what the problem could be? I'm not looking forward to having to fork out £1500 for a new one...

http://www.apple.com/uk/legal/statutory-warranty/ may be worth reading before you visit Apple. I don't thibk you'd be the first to argue that an expensive, quality computer ought to last more than 5 years, albeit that say, mechanical hard drives inside might need replacing.

  • Hello,  I have iMac from Oct, 2010 and have OS 10.6.7 and multiple users.  Mail icon was accidently removed along with program.  Mail 4.4 is on other users but when I reloaded software my user got Mail 4.3. Mail 4.3 did not work with latest OS. Ideas?Matt

Hello,  I have iMac Itel i3, from Oct, 2010 and have OS 10.6.7 and multiple users.
About 3-4 days ago the Mail icon in dock had question mark and was accidently removed, along with program on my user.  Oops.
    1. Mail 4.4 is on other users and works fine, but for me it does not work and tells me V4.3 does not work with latest OS X.
    2. I reloaded software from my user with original disks  (Oct, 2010) and got Mail 4.3 again. Mail 4.3 did not work with latest OS.  I am unable to load Mail.  Gives Yellow error message.
"  You have Mail version 4.3 (1081/1084). It can’t be used on Mac OS X Version 10.6.7 (Build 10J869). For more information, click the Help button."
    3. Tried to update software and look for update for mail 4.3 on Apple site to no success.
Hate to go to MS-Entorage ( I may need to learn something new and alien) mail program since contracts are in Mail/Address Book.
    Ideas?
    MattDeeds

    Matt,
I would download and run the 10.6.7 combo update.

  • My new iMac is not shipping with Lion installed. Will I be able to do a Migration from my PC to my iMac without installing Lion first?

My new iMac is not shipping with Lion installed. Will I be able to do a Migration from my PC to my new iMac? I only want to transfer photos and my music, currently on my PC (and on my iPod Touch & iPad).
Can anyone give me a list of steps to follow or let me know if Migration Assistant is available prior to Lion for PC to Mac?
Thank you so so so much!
    -SweetDee

    SweetDee,
I'd be VERY surprised if your machine was not shipping with Lion installed. However even if it doesn't when you initally install Lion it will launch into Setup Assistant, if you follow the prompts it will ask if you are migrating from another machine. You can use Pondini's Lion Setup Assistant tips for help, look for the section(s) on MS Windows migration. Also I would strongly recommend bookmarking and studying the following sites:
    Switch 101
    Mac 101

In closing remember you have 90 days of free telephone support with AppleCare. If you run into trouble they will be happy to assist or if you have an Apple Store in your area you can book an appointment with a Genius and they can usually help you out.
