SSLSession.getAppBufferSize is Huge.  Do we have to use it?

SSLSession.getAppBufferSize and SSLSession.getPacketBuffer size are both 16K. Breaking this down to
1. 16K for incoming encrypted packet buffer
2. 16K for outgoing encrypted packet buffer
3. 16K for incoming packet data
4. I only have 2K for outgoing packet data since I know my packets are not larger than 2000.
This seems huge resulting in 3 Megabytes of memory for 100 connections to my server. Do I have to use an app buffer size of 16K?
I can understand having to use packet buffer size of what it says for the handshake, but I don't get having to use a big app buffer size.
Also, why is the packet buffer size so huge. The biggest handshake message i saw in my case was 1.2K, not even close to 16K. What is going on and how can I trim these numbers down?
thanks,
dean

The SSLEngine doesn't know what's at the other end of the wire and it has to be able to decrypt the maximum SSL message payload which is a touch over 16k depending to a certain extent on cipher suites. You can use less if you know what you are doing at both ends. OTOH 16k isn't so much these days, I would have worried about in 1976 or even 1986 and maybe 1994 but not since.

  • I have had to buy an GRAID 4TB to back up my images as I am a photographer and have huge files.  Can I use my old timecapsule 2TB as storage for say 4 years of photography.  My imac is getting full.

I am a photographer and have huge files so  have had to buy a GRAID 4TB for backup and now have an old 2 TB time capsule not doing anything. Could I use the timecapsule as storage and transfer say a few years of images over to that and free up space on my imac.  I do have the images copied onto other hard drives but feel I need more copies in case of external harddrive failure.

Could I use the timecapsule as storage and transfer say a few years of images over to that and free up space on my imac.
Can't give you a definite answer as I don't use a Time capsule, but if it is not being used for anything, why not try it out? My guess is you could use it for miscellaneous storage if you wanted to.

I fiddled with hotspot for a bit and it fixed it.
(It can't have been a coincidence as I'd tried lots of other things to no avail beforehand - and it's something I'd never have thought of)
    VERY much appreciated

  • Turned on computer email said i needed new account when I have been using for years (no mail, drafts, sent)

Turned on computer email said I needed new account when I have been using for years (no mail, drafts, sent). I filled oyt new mail setup and it only found my mail not drafts and sent ... I use drafts to store documents and sent in a leser capacity - Ihave huge data in drafts.  Tried to restore using time machine (never had to before). The backups are there but the restore button does not highlight??? So when you clickit nothing happens.

Restoring Mail is complex. Luckily, the late James Pond left us an illustrated guide:
You can restore the Mail messages and indexes to the way they were (provided you have a Backup from around that time)

  • LiveCycle Designer 8.0 is the biggest piece of crap I have ever used.

I have been digitizing some forms for a customer, and this is my first experience with this product. It has not been a good one. I have been using the 30-day trial, and really don't want to buy it now. Here is my list of problems:
    1. When you copy and paste, or move and object, there is a fade effect. On some of my machines, this is not noticeable, but on some, it is very noticeable. There is no way that I have found to turn it off.
    2. When you copy and item, you are moved to a seemingly random place on the page. Why does the page even need to move when you copy something?
    3. When you move an item, you are moved to a seemingly random place on the page. Shouldn't it center me on the item, or at least do something that makes sense?
    4. When you paste an item, you are moved to a seemingly random place on the page. Wouldn't it make sense to paste it in the center of the page, or even close to where it came from.?
    5. Inability to group text / numerical fields. When I am making a form with over 200 individual fields, it would really help to be able to group them in some sort of logical order.
    6. The interface is not standard, like most of the other Adobe products are. Shouldn't it be the same across all products by one manufacturer?
    7. Why not have discreet horizontal/vertical guides, instead of crosshairs? At least give me the option.
    8. When aligning something to a guide, why does it line directly on the guide for the top and left sides, but aligns one pixel in on the right and bottom?
    9. Why do I line up to text fields, and then later those fields are not lined up anymore?
I have used a lot of Adobe products in the past, and haven't used one this bad since PageMaker 6.5. Come one Adobe, you have a lot of good products...
This is definitely not something my company will purchase.

funny... i am currently working on a bunch of forms in LiveCycle and I am sooo incredibly peeved at this application that I searched for "LiveCycle is a piece of crap" and found this post. =)
Yes, i know the that this post is from over a year ago, but it is obvious they havent made any improvements to the software.
I'll ditto what Jeff said and add
10.the debugger constantly disappears (yes, I followed the directions in the "help" file). I have to constantly flip between Acrobat Pro and LiveCycle, close Acrobat Pro, come back, stand on my head, while balancing a banana on my nose to get it to stay. Seriously, I feel like I'm dealing with a set of old-school TV rabbit ears trying to tune in a distant station
    11. the debugger is two lines off in its error reporting. If it says you have an error at line 39, the error is REALLY at line 37. Took me forever and a ton of messageBoxes to finally figure this out.
    12. The debugger doesnt actually support breakpoints, watches, etc inside of livecycle. You can set a breakpoint, but your code isnt visible while you are in preview mode, so what good is it? What good is stepping into your code if you cant SEE your code?
    13. If I have two documents open, and select an object from one via the Hierarchy palette, the view of that document jumps to the beginning of the document.
    14. Why cant you drag and drop objects from the hierarchy palette from one open document to another??
    15. Why isnt there a keyboard shortcut to flip between open documents?? It SHOULD be Ctrl+Tab (following what 90% of other programs use), but instead that flips between the document's different view tabs.
    16. Why cant you click+hold+drag from the lower-right to the upper left to select multiple objects at once?
    17. When you paste in a subForm with its objects, it makes the subForm area on the page HUGE, even if the objects in the subForm are fairly small
    18. When you create a new subForm in the hierarchy pallete, the view in the palette jumps to the very top object, and you have to scroll all the way back down and find your unnamed subform
    19. Why are pdfs produced in LiveCycle not compatible with Acrobat Pro's Accessibility Checker? This one is HUGE. I spent over a week with our Adaptive Computing department trying to figure out why my pdfs were failing the accessibility checker when I had followed every known guide available on producing accessible pdfs. Even more frustrating, despite all the errors Acrobat Pro said were there, JAWS and all the other accessible technologies were able to use my pdfs just fine.
    20. Why do you have to manually add in a guide line via measurement first and then drag it to where it really needs to be? Why cant you just grab the ruler and drag a guideline where you want it like photoshop? Yes, I know I can drag from the upper left and get both a vertical and horizontal line, but if i only need one, then I have to drag the other one back off the document.
I could keep going on and on and on....

  • I have a mid2009 MacBook Pro for which I have been using a USB WD HD for Time Machine.  I'd like to get a wireless HD  and start a new Time Machine backup for this Mac and retire the 5  year old WD drive.  Can I start over?

no archive/ backup is perfect, HD clones can be set to make incremental additions, same as time machine however, though they are more time involved in doing so.

Data Storage Platforms; their Drawbacks & Advantages
#1. Time Machine / Time Capsule
    Drawbacks:
    1. Time Machine is not bootable, if your internal drive fails, you cannot access files or boot from TM directly from the dead computer.
    2. Time machine is controlled by complex software, and while you can delve into the TM backup database for specific file(s) extraction, this is not ideal or desirable.
    3. Time machine can and does have the potential for many error codes in which data corruption can occur and your important backup files may not be saved correctly, at all, or even damaged. This extra link of failure in placing software between your data and its recovery is a point of risk and failure. A HD clone is not subject to these errors.
    4. Time machine mirrors your internal HD, in which cases of data corruption, this corruption can immediately spread to the backup as the two are linked. TM is perpetually connected (or often) to your computer, and corruption spread to corruption, without isolation, which TM lacks (usually), migrating errors or corruption is either automatic or extremely easy to unwittingly do.
    5. Time Machine does not keep endless copies of changed or deleted data, and you are often not notified when it deletes them; likewise you may accidently delete files off your computer and this accident is mirrored on TM.
    6. Restoring from TM is quite time intensive.
    7. TM is a backup and not a data archive, and therefore by definition a low-level security of vital/important data.
    8. TM working premise is a “black box” backup of OS, APPS, settings, and vital data that nearly 100% of users never verify until an emergency hits or their computers internal SSD or HD that is corrupt or dead and this is an extremely bad working premise on vital data.
    9. Given that data created and stored is growing exponentially, the fact that TM operates as a “store-it-all” backup nexus makes TM inherently incapable to easily backup massive amounts of data, nor is doing so a good idea.
    10. TM working premise is a backup of a users system and active working data, and NOT massive amounts of static data, yet most users never take this into consideration, making TM a high-risk locus of data “bloat”.
    11. In the case of Time Capsule, wifi data storage is a less than ideal premise given possible wireless data corruption.
    12. TM like all HD-based data is subject to ferromagnetic and mechanical failure.
    13. *Level-1 security of your vital data.
    Advantages:
    1. TM is very easy to use either in automatic mode or in 1-click backups.
    2. TM is a perfect novice level simplex backup single-layer security save against internal HD failure or corruption.
    3. TM can easily provide a seamless no-gap policy of active data that is often not easily capable in HD clones or HD archives (only if the user is lazy is making data saves).
    #2. HD archives
    Drawbacks:
    1. Like all HD-based data is subject to ferromagnetic and mechanical failure.
    2. Unless the user ritually copies working active data to HD external archives, then there is a time-gap of potential missing data; as such users must be proactive in archiving data that is being worked on or recently saved or created.
    Advantages:
    1. Fills the gap left in a week or 2-week-old HD clone, as an example.
    2. Simplex no-software data storage that is isolated and autonomous from the computer (in most cases).
    3. HD archives are the best idealized storage source for storing huge and multi-terabytes of data.
    4. Best-idealized 1st platform redundancy for data protection.
    5. *Perfect primary tier and level-2 security of your vital data.
#3. HD clones (see below for full advantages / drawbacks)
    Drawbacks:
    1. HD clones can be incrementally updated to hourly or daily, however this is time consuming and HD clones are, often, a week or more old, in which case data between today and the most fresh HD clone can and would be lost (however this gap is filled by use of HD archives listed above or by a TM backup).
    2. Like all HD-based data is subject to ferromagnetic and mechanical failure.
    Advantages:
    1. HD clones are the best, quickest way to get back to 100% full operation in mere seconds.
    2. Once a HD clone is created, the creation software (Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper) is no longer needed whatsoever, and unlike TM, which requires complex software for its operational transference of data, a HD clone is its own bootable entity.
    3. HD clones are unconnected and isolated from recent corruption.
    4. HD clones allow a “portable copy” of your computer that you can likewise connect to another same Mac and have all your APPS and data at hand, which is extremely useful.
    5. Rather than, as many users do, thinking of a HD clone as a “complimentary backup” to the use of TM, a HD clone is superior to TM both in ease of returning to 100% quickly, and its autonomous nature; while each has its place, TM can and does fill the gap in, say, a 2 week old clone. As an analogy, the HD clone itself is the brick wall of protection, whereas TM can be thought of as the mortar, which will fill any cracks in data on a week, 2-week, or 1-month old HD clone.
    6. Best-idealized 2nd platform redundancy for data protection, and 1st level for system restore of your computers internal HD. (Time machine being 2nd level for system restore of the computer’s internal HD).
    7. *Level-2 security of your vital data.
    HD cloning software options:
    1. SuperDuper HD cloning software APP (free)
    2. Carbon Copy Cloner APP (will copy the recovery partition as well)
    3. Disk utility HD bootable clone.
    #4. Online archives
    Drawbacks:
    1. Subject to server failure or due to non-payment of your hosting account, it can be suspended.
    2. Subject, due to lack of security on your part, to being attacked and hacked/erased.
    Advantages:
    1. In case of house fire, etc. your data is safe.
    2. In travels, and propagating files to friends and likewise, a mere link by email is all that is needed and no large media needs to be sent across the net.
    3. Online archives are the perfect and best-idealized 3rd platform redundancy for data protection.
    4. Supremely useful in data isolation from backups and local archives in being online and offsite for long-distance security in isolation.
    5. *Level-1.5 security of your vital data.
    #5. DVD professional archival media
    Drawbacks:
    1. DVD single-layer disks are limited to 4.7Gigabytes of data.
    2. DVD media are, given rough handling, prone to scratches and light-degradation if not stored correctly.
    Advantages:
    1. Archival DVD professional blank media is rated for in excess of 100+ years.
    2. DVD is not subject to mechanical breakdown.
    3. DVD archival media is not subject to ferromagnetic degradation.
    4. DVD archival media correctly sleeved and stored is currently a supreme storage method of archiving vital data.
    5. DVD media is once written and therefore free of data corruption if the write is correct.
    6. DVD media is the perfect ideal for “freezing” and isolating old copies of data for reference in case newer generations of data become corrupted and an older copy is needed to revert to.
    7. Best-idealized 4th platform redundancy for data protection.
    8. *Level-3 (highest) security of your vital data.
[*Level-4 data security under development as once-written metallic plates and synthetic sapphire and likewise ultra-long-term data storage]
    #6. Cloud based storage
    Drawbacks:
    1. Cloud storage can only be quasi-possessed.
    2. No genuine true security and privacy of data.
    3. Should never be considered for vital data storage or especially long-term.
    4. *Level-0 security of your vital data.
    Advantages:
    1. Quick, easy and cheap storage location for simplex files for transfer to keep on hand and yet off the computer.
    2. Easy source for small-file data sharing.

  • How can I reset my IPAD 2 to resolve the fact that Apple will not let me use the APPLE  ID and passwords that I want to use becasue they may have been used in the past year. I am very close to donating this contraption to the Good Will.

I have been an Apple User for almost two decades and have had no problems with my G4 Powerbook, my Intel MacMini, nor several other Macs as well as Windows 7 machines. However, the IPAD2 poses a problem of unfathomable disgust with the concept and implementation of the Apple ID. There is one for the computer, there is one for support, and there is one for itunes, and possibly another one for apps. There are different passwords for each. I am continually faced with notification that my Apple ID is incorrect or the password is incorrect. I have to keep an Excel spreadsheet with all of this unnecessary NANNY State protection matched only in pervasiveness by the Federal government.
I am told that an Apple ID can never be destroyed and replaced. Who dreamed that one up? I am told I cannot use a password that has been used in the past year. Why? By whose authority? I am not a walking encyclopedia that remembers every telephone number he ever dialed. Thankfully my cheap LG clamshell telephone keeps numbers and talks to Ford Sync successfully.
Bottom line is that the IPAD has become almost totally useless since I cannot change the several necessary passwords to anything I can remember because they are not novel enough. I also never seem to be able to keep the Apple IDs straight as they are too numerous to remember and I don't want to remember them anyway. Why? Even if you enventually get the ID right you have the wrong password and have to go through a merry-go-round of emails to change the password to something you have already used in the past year which is not permitted.
Has anyone out there used a competitive device with less cumberson overhead? Surely this is not the best American technology can produce.
    Thanks for your comments.

Thanks to all who responded. You are all absolutely correct. However, this Ipad was a gift to my wife who was dying of cancer in the hospital and wanted some entertainment. So I started it out with her Apple ID. After she passed away I moved from Sacramento to Austin and eventually proceeded to get the Apple ID changed from my wife's to mine. Meanwhile when she was in the hospital I opened an Itunes account in my name to buy movies for her. That was the first mistake.
Then during the move to Austin I lost track of the IPAD and later found it and tried to use support but could not remember the proper ID. Later the folks at the Apple store helped me create a new and novel Apple ID that was unfortunately unlike any other.
The botom line is that I am stuck with three Apple IDs and three passwords. I am told by Apple there is nothing they can do about this as IDs cannot be changed or destroyed. I can quit using them or start a new account but when I try to do that the system keeps remembering too many things from the past and resists.
Even if I sold this Ipad and bought a new one, the system memory is still there.
I think the real problem is that destop and laptop computers are totally owned by an individual and that individual can control logins and passwords to his liking. IPADs and similar Apple products are different in that the corporation has built in their own intrusion detection schemes because of the relation to Itunes.
One thing I thought about is to open a new Itunes account pretendding to be a new customer with my regular Apple ID. Perhaps I could do the same with Apple Support.
    Thanks for your comments.

  • HT5622 I have been using one apple ID for my family as it makes it easier to manage itunes purchases/rentals on all of our devices.  Now that my kids are getting old and my wife has recently purchased an Iphone, I can see that I need to change my strategy

I have been using one apple ID for my family as it makes it easier to manage itunes purchases/rentals on all of our devices.  Now that my kids are getting old and my wife has recently purchased an Iphone, I can see that I need to change my strategy. I plan to add a few more iphones to the family very soon.  What is your recommendation to manage all of our devices (iphones, itouch, apple tv) for my family?  Can I continue to function with one apple ID or is it time to take the leep into attempting to manage multi-apple ID's?

There's a few ways of managing multiple devices on a single computer (and keeping seperate content on each). The following document is worth checking through:
How to use multiple iPods, iPads, or iPhones with one computer

  • I have been using icloud for itunes and aps purchases, but now I would like to create a new icloud account so that my calendars sync without having to plug in ... how do I do this, as my phone won't let me change the icloud account

My husband and I have been using our iCloud account for music and ap purchases only.  I have decided that i would like to now create a new icloud account so that i can sync my calendar and contacts.  I read about doing this online and it looks simple and easy ... and yet, when i go to switch it on my iphone, there is only 1 place for an icloud account (our shared account) and it is greyed out so that I cannot change it.  How do I do this?

Whenever a menu choice is grayed out, that is because you have Restrictions turned on in Settings.  Be sure to turn it off.
You are confusing an itunes store account with an icloud account.  You two can continue using the same ID for itunes (thus sharing purchased music, apps, etc.), but you really should have separate accounts (different IDs) for icloud, since an account is intended for one user to keep his/her devices in sync.
To create a new icloud account, go to
    http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/
Then go to Settings>icloud and scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap Delete Account.  (have restrictions turned off)  That will disconnect the device from the account but will not delete data in icloud or other devices.  Then sign in using the new ID.

I have been using Elements 8 ever since it came out, and all of a sudden the cropping tool has changed: I can no longer crop horizontally or vertically, only diagonally. The up/down/side arrows have disappeared! Please help if you can, I'm no longer able to make my photos look their best. Thank you in advance.

Quit the editor (Quit PSE on a mac). Then restart it while holding down ctrl+alt+shift (command+option+shift). Keep the keys down till you see a window asking if you want to delete the settings file. You do.

  • I have been using Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 for two years. I got a new printer and installed it although I did not remove my old printer from my computer. I used this program and my new printer for quite a few months, but today I deleted my old printer

I have been using Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 for along time now. When I first used the program I had a different printer than I have now. Although I changed printers I never removed the software from my old one. Now this was never a problem until today. When I choose a printer I still had option to use the old one but always chose my new HP Envy 5530 and Adobe never had a problem printing from that new printer. However today I decided to remove my old printer from my computer and now my Adobe cannot find my new printer.  How can I make it find the HP printer?

How can I Publish to a Folder just one of the several websites I have created using iWeb?
it drives me nuts having to emove all the other websites when I want to upload one.
    Sparrow

For iWeb, I like to do only one site per domain file.  I move domain files out of the Application Support folder and place them inside project or client folders, or in DropBox. Once you duplicate a domain file and begin customizing it, it will load and behave as a separate project/site.
I publish each iWeb domain/project direct to a server via FTP. Sometime I publish to a folder, then upload via FTP manually.
iWeb is a remarkable tool, especially when you work from scratch with blank tamplates
