SSRS 2008 R2 Problem understanding View State Validation steps

Hi,
Sorry, but I have some problem understanding this steps. Please help me to understand this.

How to Configure View State Validation
To run a scale-out deployment on an NLB cluster, you must configure view state validation so that users can view interactive HTML reports. You must do this for the report server and for Report Manager.
View state validation is controlled by the ASP.NET. By default, view state validation is enabled and uses the identity of the Web service to perform the validation. However, in an NLB cluster scenario, there are multiple service instances
and web service identities that run on different computers. Because the service identity varies for each node, you cannot rely on a single process identity to perform the validation.
To work around this issue, you can generate an arbitrary validation key to support view state validation, and then manually configure each report server node to use the same key. You can use any randomly generated hexadecimal sequence.
The validation algorithm (such as SHA1) determines how long the hexadecimal sequence must be.
Generate a validation key and decryption key by using the autogenerate functionality provided by the .NET Framework.
(Well, how to generate Validation key using .Net Framework?) In the end, you must have a single <machineKey> entry that you can
paste into the Web.config file for each Report Manager instance in the scale-out deployment.
The following example provides an illustration of the value you must obtain. Do not copy the example into your configuration files; the key values are not valid.
<machineKey validationKey="123455555" decryptionKey="678999999" validation="SHA1" decryption="AES"/>
Open the Web.config file for Report Manager, and in the <system.web> section paste the <machineKey> element that you generated. By default, the Report Manager
Web.config file is located in \Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSRS10_50.MSSQLSERVER\Reporting Services\ReportManager\Web.config.
Save the file.
Repeat the previous step for each report server in the scale-out deployment.
(Do I need to repeat all 3 previous steps?)
Verify that all Web.Config files in the \Reporting Services\Report Manager folders contain identical <machineKey> elements in the <system.web> section.
Thanks

Jerry,
Thanks for the reply.
From the above View State Validation Steps,
For 1st step , how to generate validation key using .Net Framework?
for 4th step, Do I need to repeate all 3 previous steps?
Thanks

    Hi SQL_Help:
Per my understanding that you have some question with the steps descript about "How to Configure View State Validation", you don't know how to generate Validation key and also not clear if all the Web.Config files will add the same
    code, right?
We have many method to generate the validation key, details information below for your reference:
Generate either from the machineKey generator utility from
http://aspnetresources.com/tools/keycreator.aspx or  your very own utility or from this link: http://www.eggheadcafe.com/articles/GenerateMachineKey/GenerateMachineKey.aspx
We can add some code to generate the key, details steps and sample code in article below for your reference:
How to create keys by using Visual C# .NET for use in Forms authentication
We should add the same code which include the generated key in all the web.config file in each server node.
More Details information you can reference to the rticle below:

I am no sql expert, so any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you in advance.  I want the user to enter in loan numbers they would like to reflect on a report in ssrs 2008.  The loan number field is a text field.
My sql looks like this, and the user will enter in loan numbers like ( 0001,0002,0003) - comma separated.  However, Visual studio does not like the format.  I know it must be something simple, but I can't figure out the correct syntax.
    select * from dbo.vwEscrowHistoryLoan

    Hi guys,
Does anyone knows how I can to render SSRS-2008 reports in DMP 4400 standalone and its browser(tvzilla = Firefox 2.0.0.18) ?
My frimework version on DMP is 5.4.1(lastest)
I google for it and found something like an answer, but it seems to be mostly for Safari and Chrome...

    Thank you in advance !
    Regards,
    Hristo.

    Hoang,
In SSRS 2005, white spaces are automatically ignored. But in 2008 this behavior gets changed and by default whitespaces are not ignored.  But, There is Report property
ConsumeContainerWhitespace which is set to False by default. We can remove blank space at end by setting
    ConsumeContainerWhitespace to true.
The logic to prevent the unnecessary pagebreak is
    - ReportBody width should be less then Pagesize(width) – Left Margin – Right Margin
    - ReportBody height should be less then Pagesize(Height) – Top Margin – Bottom Margin – Header height – Footer height

  • View states for components

Hi hoping someone could help. I understand view states and can use them. However in this situation I want to have a view state for a control bar but I already have 2 view states for another component (a panel component) in my Flex app and want to separate the control bar view state from the panel view state.
Therefore when I set the currentState = 'showBtn' it's affecting the panel view state and I don't want it to. I've tried putting the <mx:states> tag in under the component i'm trying to add the button view state to but i'm getting an "Initializer for the property 'states' is not allowed here" error.

i've tried that... when i start using the id of the component like myPanel.currentState = "whatever" it tells me the currentState whatever is undefined. it only seems to work if i do currenState = "whatever". here is some of my code to help you see my problem:

SSRS 2008 R2 is extremely slow.  The query runs in less than a second in the dataset designer but if you try to view the report it takes over 10 minutes.  I have read this is a bug in SSRS 2008 R2.  We installed the most recent patches and
service packs.  Nothing we've done so far has fixed it and I see that I'm not the only person with this problem.  However I don't see any answers either.

    Hi Kim Sharp,
According to your description that when you view the report it is extremely slow in SSRS 2008 R2 but it is very fast when execute the query in dataset designer, right?
I have tested on my local environment and can‘t reproduce the issue. Obviously, it is the performance issue, rendering performance can be affected by a combination of factors that include hardware, number of concurrent users accessing reports, the amount
of data in a report, design of the report, and output format. If you have parameters in your report which contains many values in the list, the bad performance as you mentioned is an known issue on 2008 R2 and already have the hotfix:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2276203
Any issue after applying the update, I recommend you that submit a feedback at https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/
If you don’t have, you can do some action to improve the performance when designing the report. Because how you create and update reports affects how fast the report renders.
Actually, the Report Server ExecutionLog2  view contains reports performance data. You could make use of below query to see where the report processing time is being spent:
After you determine whether the delay time is in data retrieval, report processing, or report rendering:
    use ReportServer
    SELECT TOP 10 ReportPath,parameters,
TimeDataRetrieval + TimeProcessing + TimeRendering as [total time],
    TimeDataRetrieval, TimeProcessing, TimeRendering,
    ByteCount, [RowCount],Source, AdditionalInfo
    FROM ExecutionLog2
    ORDER BY Timestart DESC
Use below methods to help troubleshoot issues according to the above query result :

  • Ssrs 2008 r2 error-Forward pointing dependencies are not valid

In an existing SSRS 2008 r2, report, I am attempting to add a parameter called 'Customer_Category'. I am getting the following error message:
The report paramter 'CustomerNumber' has a DefaultValue or a ValidVaue that depends on the report parameter 'Customer_Category'. Forward pointing dependencies are not valid.
I am trying to determine how to fix this error. The 'CustomerNumber' is a parameter value that is obtained by reading from a dataset. In this dataset there are existing other parameters called 'Customer_Type' and 'Customer_Preference'. Both of these parameters
obtain there values from selections that the user makes when the SSRS report is executing. There are no default values.
I am trying to have the 'Customer_Category' be the same way where there are no default values and the user must select the parameter value when the report is executing. There should only be one value that the user can select from.
The new parameter called 'Customer_Category' is the last parameter in the list of parameters. Does the order of parameters make a difference? If so, how can I move the 'Customer_Category' parameter in front of the customer_number parameter?
Here is the sql that is used from obtaining a list of customers from the dataset for customer_number:
    SELECT   Distinct CustomerNumber
    FROM   BridgeUserCustomer
     WHERE
             Type =  @Customer_Type
      AND Preference = @Customer_Preference and Category = @Customer_Category
     GROUP BY CustomerNumber
Would you tell me what is wrong and what I can do to solve the problem?

Create independent datasets for each parameter and try once.

  • SSRS 2012: Report Header PrintOnFirstPage-problem after report migration from SSRS 2008

    Hi ,
I developed my report using VS 2008 IDE and the report header property "PrintOnFirstPage" is set to False.
The content of the header are some textboxes and lines that should show only on page number > 1.
This works fine in VS 2008 IDE in preview mode as well as with reports rendered by SSRS 2008 report server.
Recently I migrate&convert the same report to SSRS 2012 I noticed a different rendering behaviour of my report.
So in VS 2010 preview mode, the page headers content (textboxe etc.)  is not visible on first page but the headers space did not colapse as it does in VS 2008 IDE preview mode.
I checked all the report properties but unable to find a solution to my problem.
I was able to reprduce the same behaviour by creating a new report using VS2010 IDE.
    Any ideas are greatly appreciated
    Thanks
    Bodo

    Hi BodoHH,
I have tested on my local enviorment and can't reproduce the issue, the issue can be caused by many factors, it can be caused by the properties setting and can also caused by the visual studio, Detais information below for your reference:
As you mentioned that you have check all the report properties, please also check the tablix,Page Header, report body properties to see if the size are the same with that in the SSRS2008.
Please open this rdl report in the report builder to see if the print layout is correct, if it works fine, the issue can be caused by the visual studio.
Please also try to upload the rdl report to report manager to check the layout.
Please also provide the snaphot of the layout in VS2010 to let us better analysis about the issue.

  • Ssrs 2008 r2 export to csv file problem

In an SSRS 2008 R2 report, the users are going to export the data to: csv (comma delimited) and  excel.
I am using the following to display if a column is visible or not:
    =IIF(Mid(Globals!RenderFormat.Name,1,5)="EXCEL" AND First(Len(Fields!CustomerNumber.Value)) > 0,False,true).
I have set the DataElementOutput=Output for the textbox that displays the value. I have left  DataElementOutput=Auto for the textbox that contains the column header.
When exporting to csv (comma delimited) or excel, I basically want the column to be visible when there is data in the field and the column not to be visible when there is no data.
The code works for excel but the code does not work for comma delimited.
Thus can you tell me what I can do so the column is not disaplyed when the data is exported to csv (comma delimited)?

I don't think what you are trying to do is supported in .CSV files as it only saves text and values.  See the following article:
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/help/excel-formatting-and-features-that-are-not-transferred-to-other-file-formats-HP010014105.aspx
If you open a .CSV file using excel you can use formulas, but if you try and save it, it will not allow you to.  I assume this is what you are trying to do.

  • SQL SSRS 2008 DateTime Calendar Control and Oracle 10g Data Source

Hello. I am creating reports in SSRS 2008 using the calendar control for a date range. Let's say we select a start date of 3/3/2012. This parameter is sent into my SQL statement in the WHERE clause which is executed against an Oracle 10g database. All syntax has to be in SQL that Oracle understands, so no CONVERT or CAST.
The format of the date is throwing an error "ORA-01843: not a valid month" when I try to use the following:
    SELECT *
    FROM TABLE
    WHERE STARTDATE >= TO_DATE('3/03/2012', 'MM/DD/YYYY')

    SELECT *
    FROM TABLE
    WHERE STARTDATE >= >= TO_CHAR('3/03/2012', 'MM/DD/YYYY')
I cannot find a way to format the date parameter in SQL Server SSRS before it gets to the SQL to be executed in Oracle.

It works. The problem is getting the parameter '3/3/2012' into a usable format for Oracle.
Let's assume an application is sending in '3/3/2012' which will be used in an Oracle query (no PL/SQL allowed, nor can I create functions, stored procedures, etc - only straight up SQL). How can I prepare the parameter to successfully do the compare on the Oracle Date field?

    Hi Bitia,
As per my understanding, after you add Item field to the report, it does not calculate total of matl group, right? If that is the case, please refer to the following steps to troubleshoot the problem:
Modify the dataset used to retrieve data, delete the fields will not be used in the report.
Run the query in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) to make sure that there is data for matl cost group.
Make sure that row group and totals are correctly added.
In addition, do you want to add Finished date to page header? If that is the case, we can use ReportItem to achieve the goal. Please refer to the following steps:
In design surface, right-click the report and click Insert, then click Page Header.
Drag Text Box from Toolbox to page header.
Right-click inside of Text Box, then click Expression.

  • Ssrs 2008 r2 display only final total amount

In an existing ssrs 2008 r2 report, I want the final grand total to appear as the last amount displayed in the SSRS report.
In the 'main' matrix of the report, I have created an outside group row below the last line of the matrix.
The expresion for this statement looks the the following:
    ="Grand Total: $"+str(sum(cdec(Fields!TransactionAmount.Value),"datasetname")).
The total amount is correct, but this total amount line appears after every control break. Basically the amount appears every
time the control break changes by date, teacher, or student number.
The extra row I added does contain grouping references to date, teacher, and student number. Thus to solve my problem:
    1. Can you tell me how to remove the grouping references to date, teacher, and student number so that the last row will be the only place the total amount will be displayed?
    2. If the above is not an option, can you tell me how to add an extra row to the 'main' matrix so the report groupings do not appear on the final total line?
    3. If the above 2 choices are not an option, would you tell me how to add the final total line in the final report footer and/or any place you believe the final total amount will appear only one time?

    Hi Wendy,
According to your description, you want to add a row into your matrix to get the total value of TransactionAmount. This can be final total value which appears only one time in your matrix. Right?
In this scenario, the reason why the total amount line appears after each break change (data, teacher..) because this total amount line is still within the parent group. I guess you didn't add the outside group row on the top parent group. So we just need
to right click on the textbox which is top parent group, insert a row outside of group. Then put your expression into the added row. Now the total amount will appear only one time in the matrix. It looks like below:

  • SSRS 2008 FIPS error

    Hello,
We've installed SQL Server 2008 and Reporting Services 2008 on a Windows Server 2008 Enterprise box. I could initially access the Report Server at the default URL, but when I attempted to access the Report Manager, I got a 500 Internal Server Error message. When I looked in the RS logs I found the following:
ui!ReportManager_0-2!a34!01/30/2009-11:08:40:: e ERROR: This implementation is not part of the Windows Platform FIPS validated cryptographic algorithms.
    ui!ReportManager_0-2!a34!01/30/2009-11:08:40:: e ERROR: HTTP Status Code --> 500
    -------Details-------
System.InvalidOperationException: This implementation is not part of the Windows Platform FIPS validated cryptographic algorithms.
     at System.Security.Cryptography.RijndaelManaged..ctor()
Once I disabled FIPS compliancy on the server, the issue disappeared and I had full access to the Report Manager. Unfortunately, for this particular project, FIPS compliancy is required, so I need a way to run the manager with FIPS enabled.
I've looked into this elsewhere and found out that a fix was released for the same issue in SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services. Is there a fix or workaround for 2008 yet? Has anyone else come across this problem?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
    RLG

    Hi RLG,
To work around this problem, change the configuration in the Report Manager Web.config file. Specify that ASP.NET use the Triple Data Encryption Standard (3DES) algorithm to process view state data. To do this, follow these steps:
In a text editor such as Notepad, open the Report Manager Web.config file which is located in the default path: <driver>:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSRS10.MSSQLSERVER\Reporting Services\ReportManager.
In the Web.config file, locate the <system.web> section.
Add the following <machineKey> section to in the <system.web> section:
    <machineKey validationKey="AutoGenerate,IsolateApps" decryptionKey="AutoGenerate,IsolateApps" validation="3DES" decryption="3DES"/>
    Save the Web.config file.
If you have any more questions, please let me know.
    Thanks.
