SSRS Report Model Supported Data Providers

When trying to create a report model in Visual Studio 2008/BIDS, I see from the data providers list that Sql Server and Oracle are the only ones listed.  My boss is wondering if that is a firm list, or can it be extended through some registry process
or utility. We have a non-Sql, non-Oracle data source which we would like to use as a report model in SSRS ad-hoc reporting scenarios.  We have configured a OLE DB data source for it, so in designing reports in VS, we can connect to it, and it works fine,
but we would like to give users Report Builder, and they would be able to point to this report model for ad-hoc reports, and thus, would get the Query Designer.
Just curious...
Thanks.

  • Publication for Deski report with multiple data providers

    Hi,
Has anyone been able to get a publication working that uses a Deski report with multiple data providers as the source? I'm trying to get a publication working that uses dynamic recipients and personalization. When I try to schedule the publication, I get the error "Object not found".
    Thanks,
    Debbie

    Debbie,
    That's standard.
It's useful for emulating outer joins in reports.
Say you've got a sales report where you want to display all 12 months of the year in a crosstab whatever month you run in.
We're only in May at the moment though. With one data provider (SALES), you'll get a crosstab with just up to May for your months.
If you create a separate data provider called MONTHS to return the months in the current year, you will then have a merged dimension of YearMonth in both.
In your crosstab if you just use YearMonth you'll get just the five months. If you qualify it with its data provider name (in our case MONTHS), you'll see the full twelve months shown.
I hope that clears it up for your.

  • SSRS Report is missing data when exported to Excel via a subscription

I have an SSRS report on a daily subscription that creates an Excel attachment and emails it  to a number of users. Some of the users are reporting that they cannot see all
of the data in the Excel attachment.
The report has a date column and 6 numeric columns, and the affected users cannot see the numerical columns - the fields are empty. The date column is displaying
correctly along with all of the column headers.
If however I change the format to XHTML, all data is displayed for all users.
What's weird is that it is not affecting all users - for the affected users, the file size of the attachment is considerably smaller so it doesn't look like the
issue is with their PC's - the data is not there to begin with.
I've tried setting the DataElementOutput property on each of the fields to Output but no luck.
I am using SQL Server 2008R2.

    Hi Wolfmeister,

  • SSRS report not displaying data in correct order

    Guys,
I have a SSRS 2012 report not displaying returned records from SQL in the correct order.  Running the stored procedure in SSMS and supplying the parameter values returns the data correctly and running Query Designer in SSRS using the stored procedure
on the dataset in question, likewise returns the data correctly.  Only when I run the actual report does the data display incorrectly(always last name order).  I've done similar reporting using very similar stored procedures and I've never had this
problem.  Below is the stored procedure.  "@SortBy" is the parameter with the sorting value. 1=Due Date; 2=Denial Amt and 3=Last name and is passed by SSRS to SQL.  Wish I could supply screen shots.

    Hi DaveMac1960,
According to your description, when you render data in report, you find it always shows the data with unexpected order. Right?
In Reporting Services, if we don't set any sorting in tablix, it will order the data as your query in SSMS or Query Builder. In some scenario, for example, we add parent group for data rows, it will have the rows sort by the group on data field by default,
and the "order by" in your query will be ignored. So please check the Sorting tab in Tablix Properties, in this scenario, we suggest you delete any sorting in the Sorting tab so that the "Order By" clause can work.

  • What is the best way to create a SSRS Report with Header Data and its associated child data

So I have Member Information...Member ID...Member Addressing...etc.. I want to display this in the top part of the report like...
    Member Name:
    Member ID:
    Member Address Line 1:
And then below I want to report on all the claims associated with a Member ID that is chosen by the Parameter. Obviously the Claim Data will be in Table format. Do I necessarily have to associate the Member Information with the Claim Information or simply
use the same parameter? And what is the best Toolbox item to use to display the Member Information on top?
Any help or guidance is greatly appreciated by this newbie.
Thanks for your review and am hopeful for a reply.
    ITBobbyP

    Hi ITBobby,
According to your description, you want to display all Claim Data for each Member. Right?
In Reporting Services, we can use a table to display those Claim Data and make them group on Member ID. If you want to display the Member Information, we can put the data fields on parent group level. Then we can use create a parameter to filter the Member
ID we need. We have tested this scenario in our local environment. Here are steps and screenshots for your reference:
    1. Create a DataSet(DataSet1) which contains the data fields of Member and Claim.
    2. Create a table and drag the Claim data into the table.
    3. In Row Group. Right click on Details and add a parent group.
    4. Select Member_ID in Group by.
    5. Right click on the textbox of Claim data. Select Insert Row->Outside of Group-Above. Drag the MemberName into the inserted row.
    6. In Report Data, right click on Parameter-> Add Parameter.
    7. Type Member_ID in Name and Prompt, select allow multiple values.
    8. In Available Values, select get data from a query. Choose DataSet1, select Member_ID in values and label. You can also set this in Default Values if you need.
    9. Save and preview.

  • Unable to show all fields from a table\view within a SSRS Report Model for user selection

I recently added a new view with a simple SELECT (with 3 fields) statement to our existing Report Model DSV. I then went ahead to the report model (.smdl) file proceeded with the auto-generation of the new attributes which of course ran with no issues.
I was seeing the three new fields as attributes. But when I went within the existing Perspective to add the newly added fields so that the users see them, one of the field is missing. It is just a VARCHAR field. What would it cause this field to not show up
    within a Perspective?

  • SSRS report connecting SSAS 2014 cube not returning measure value

Recently we migrated SSAS from 2008r2 to 2014 in Dev environment. when we are testing  SSRS reports which are connecting to that cube is having issue. the measure value is returning as [Measures].[LSM Count] instead of numeric value.

    Hi Surendra_Thota,
According to your description, there are SSRS reports with SSAS data source, after you migrated SSAS from 2008 R2 to 2014, the measure value returned string instead of numeric value.
I tried to reproduce the issue in my local machine of SQL Server 2014, but it works fine for me. As a workaround, please modify the query like below:
    SELECT

  • Report model dynamic connection string

    hi
I'm trying to build a report model, which has to connect to different database
    For ex:
I've 10 different customers, and i need to connect the selected customer database,
Any thoughts how to proceed in this
    Thanks
    Chezhian

    Hi Chezhian,
As per my understanding, I would try the two methods to achieve your requirement: create one report model which contains those databases or create 10 report model, the data source can connect to the corresponding model based on the user. In Reporting Services,
a report model can only map to a database. So the first method doesn’t work. If we want to connect to a report model, we should browse to a report server or SharePoint site and select a published model. We don’t need a connection string to use a report model
as a data source. So the second method still doesn’t work.
To work around the issue, I think we can create 10 report model, each report model corresponding each user’s database and named the user name. Then set Item-Level Permissions of each report model based on the user on report manager. Each user can only see
his own report model on the report server.
Or we can create a data source with dynamic connection string, the blog below is for your reference:

  • Updaing SQL 2005 Report Builder Reports (based on Report Models) to SQL 2012 Report Builder Reports?

We are upgrading from SQL 2005 to SQL 2012 directly (no SQL 2008 to be installed).  We have many SSRS Reports written in Report Builder 1.0 against Report Models generated from an OLAP datasource.  In SQL 2012, Report Models can no longer
be created or edited.  I have found many posts on this topic, including this:
http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/896522da-45c3-46c0-848a-16f8f02ab051/how-to-upgrade-report-models-from-report-builder-1020-to-30. which the 'answered' response states:
SQL Server 2012 Reporting Services does not include tools for creating or updating report models. Although you can continue
to use existing report models as data sources in SQL Server 2012 Reporting Services reports you should consider updating your reports to remove their dependency on report models.
But I cannot locate any instructions/documentation, etc. on how to go about "updating your reports to remove
their dependency on report models.".  How do I take existing Report Builder 1.0 reports that point to Report Models and upgrade them to the new SQL 2012 without Report Models?  Is there a way to convert them?  Or, do they need to be rewritten
from scratch?  If there is a link to these instructions, please post as I cannot locate it any where.  Thank you.

Katherine thank you for helping with this.  Here is what I have tried:
On the Report Manager (2012) site, I created a new OLAP data source.  And when I test the connection, I get the pop up "Connection created successfully."
I then pointed my Report Builder (v1.0) report to this new Data Source (from Report Manager site, selected 'Manage' for the report, from Data Sources, selected Browse and drilled down to the new Data Source I created and selected Apply).
Now when I try to View the report, I receive the following error:
An error has occurred during report processing. (rsProcessingAborted) Query execution failed for dataset 'paramDataSet'. (rsErrorExecutingCommand) The SemanticQuery element at line 7, column 279 (namespace http://schemas.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2004/10/semanticmodeling)
    cannot appear under Envelope/Body/Execute/Command.
I then exited IE and reopened the Report Manager site.  I opened Report Builder 3.0,, selected Open and opened this same report.  Idrilled donw to Data Sources and  right clicked on dataSource1 (the only one listed) and selected Data
Source Properties.  I kept the same name, but selected the new shared datasource I created (New DataSource), and selected OK.
Next, I drilled down to Datasets.  There are two listed, dataSet and paramDataSet (yes, this report has parameters).  I right clicked on the dataSet and selected dataSet properties, and see that it points to dataSource1 (which is the dataSource
I just pointed to my New DataSource).  I cancelled and checked the Data Source for paramDataSet, and it also points to dataSource1.  Selected cancel and went back to the main dataSet.
So both datasets point to the new DataSource I created.
If I select Run, I get the following error:
I select OK and right click on dataSet and select Refresh Fields and get this error:
Can you (anyone) please explain what I am doing incorrectly?  Thank you.

  • SSRS- report builder showing recent sites and server as blank

    Hi All,
A client of ours when executes Report builder is not able to see Report models as report builder just gets open but do not create connection to server.
We have done the following settings for same:
Used both name and IP of system and added the same to Trusted Sites in IE settings
Also we have used port number along with URL for report builder.
We have given all rites to user on reporting services (SQL)
But it is still not showing report models.
Kindly help us.  It is very urgent.
    Thanks in advance
    -Regards
    Kumud

    Hi Kumud,
According to your description, your client can't see the created report models in Report Builder. Right?
In this scenario, the reason why the client can't see the report models because he doen't connect to report server. Please click the
Connect at the left bottom of Report Builder and type the report server url manually to reconnect the report server.
If the connection is failed, please check if there any process on client side which occupies the port for report server URL. Here are two articles for your reference to do troubleshooting.
Report Builder 3.0 error : Connection Failed. Unable to connect to the server that is specified in the URL
    Connecting to Report Server
Since the Semantic modeling language (SMDL) report models are deprecated. Although you can you continue to use existing report models as data sources in SQL Server 2012 or later version Reporting Services reports you should consider updating your reports
to remove their dependency on report models.

  • Excel Services Reports v/s SSRS Reports Performance

    Hello All,
I have used SSRS Reporting services to render Dashboard in PWA.
I have added the Report directly to the web page and then navigating to various SSRS reports with multiple data queries to multiple datasets.
This is making my Dashboard extremely slow.
So my question is that, If I use Excel Services Reports in the Dashboard instead of SSRS Reports, will it be any faster ?
Also will it speed up if the reports are added to Performance Point services instead of directly adding to the webpage ?
Please let me know if anybody had tried this.
    Thanks,
    Shanky

    Hello,
It might be quicker it might be slower - it is probably the SQL queries that are running. Are you using Stored Procedures to get the data or just T-SQL queries in the SSRS Report? How long do the queries take to return the data directly in SQL Server
    Management Studio?

  • Cascading Filters in Report Model

    Hi
I have created a Report Model for Adhoc Reports, we are using Report Builder 1.0 as Adhoc tool. Now the issue is when the user filters the data. First, user applies filter on Product Catogery Table (ProductCatogery_ID = 1) , now when trying to apply
filter on Product Sub Catagory Table, in the filter drop down it is showing all the Sub_Catagory_IDs, but the user wants to see only those Sub_Catagory_IDs related to (ProductCatogery_ID = 1). How can we acheive this in Report Builder.
    Royal Thomas

    Hi Royal Thomas,
According to your description, you created an Ad-hoc report with report model as data source in Report Builder 1.0. You want to create a cascading parameter, after ProductCatogery_ID is selected, the list of values for Sub_Catagory_ID will be displayed depends
on the value chosen in preceding parameter.
I tested the issue in my local machine, I can add a filter by dragging an entity or field name to the filter area and specify a comparison operator and criteria. But I’m afraid we could not create cascading parameters achieve that in Report Builder 1.0,
as a workaround, we can achieve Cascading Parameter in Report Designer and in Report Builder 2.0.
For more information about Add Cascading Parameters to a Report, please refer to the following document:

  • SSRS report with tabular model - MDX query to filter parameter data based on Tuple value.

    Hello Everyone,
I am working on SSRS report in which a tabular model is being used as a backend.
I want to filter the report parameters which are dependent to other parameters. Like, country, state, and cities drop downs.
All are multi-select parameters. I am using MDX queries to filter the parameters data.
Based on selected one or more countries, the data of states needs to be filtered.
The point is the text which is being displayed in state dropdown for each state name is combination of 3 different members.
So, I created the following Tuple for the same and can see the expected display names in states dropdown.
    "("+
    [Location].[Code 1].CURRENTMEMBER.UNIQUENAME +","+
    [Location].[Code 2].CURRENTMEMBER.UNIQUENAME +","+
    [Location].[Descr].CURRENTMEMBER.UNIQUENAME +")"
Now, when I would like filter the cities data based on selected one or more states, I am unable to pass the multiple Tuples (more than one selected Tuples) as parameter for cities dropdown.
The following is my query for City parameter. It is working well when I select only one State from the dropdown.
However, when I select multiple states, it is unable to convert the Tuple into SET in ELSE part of IIF condition specified in following query.
Can anybody help me how to resolve the error that I am getting about STRTOSET function?
    Or
Are there any other alternatives to achieve this requirement?
Any help would be much appreciated.

    WITH MEMBER [Measures].[ParameterCaption] AS [City].[City Business].CURRENTMEMBER.MEMBER_CAPTION
    MEMBER [Measures].[ParameterValue] AS [City].[City Business].CURRENTMEMBER.UNIQUENAME

  • Adhoc Reporting using Data Sources instead of Report Model

    Hi Gurus,
I'm working on SSRS 2008. I'm trying to create Adhoc Report using Report Builder 3.0. To select Data Source, both *.rsds and *.smdl are listed. I selected a Data Source which points to a SQL database. When I add New datasets, I'm able to add the fields and
it automatically detect relationships (Joins) using Primary Key and Foreign Key defined in the tables. I'm also able to edit the query. I ran the report and it ran successfully.
My question is I couldn't find any documentation regarding using Data Source for Adhoc Reporting. MS SQL documentation and forums insists that Report Model is required for Adhoc Reporting.
Please let me know if someone tried to create Adhoc Report using Data Source instead of Report Model. While I understand there are more benefits using Report Model (define entities/attributes, show/hide entity/attributes, organize entities/attributes etc.),
I just want to know if this is possible.
Are there any known limitation using this method?
    Thanks In Advance!

    Hi Ereswaran,
Yes, we can create ad hoc report using report using data source instead of Report Model. Ad hoc reports typically are used to answer a specific question at appoint in time, so consequently people don’t spend a lot of time arranging and formatting the data
in a precise way. Other report development tools are available in Reporting Services to support more sophisticated reporting requirements.
Using Report Builder, we can build a simple report that display data form a single data source as defined by a report model. This tool is most useful for business users who need access to information but lack the skills to write a SQL query. If we have full
experience of SQL query, of course we can use data source instead of Report Model.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

  • Report model to have multiple data sources

    Hi,
We have requirement to develop report model in 2008 having multiple data sources which includes SQL SERVER 2012 and Oracle database so end user can all the relevant data in one place to run in report builder. So please advise how this can be achieved.
One option I can think of pulling all the data into one database through SSIS and then build a smdl on it.
I heard it might be possible to build Tabular cube and then use Report builder on it not sure which is the best option unless any other solution.
    Thanks,

    There are multiple options
    1. If its just for need of a single report then you don't necessarily need to use SSIS and bring all data to single database for that. SSRS supports multiple heterogeneous datasources so you can simply create multiple datasources one fro SQLServer and one
for Oracle. Then you can create datasets based on these datasources and use them inside reports to display the data from the two systems.
One thing to note here is that SSRS provides only limited capability to merge fields from multiple datasets within same container through the use of Lookup, LookupSet etc functions so if you want to do lots of comparison ,manipulation of fields against two
datasources then you need to go for common database approach itself. This involves building a datawarehouse/datamart which will assmeble data from various sources and change them into format which  report expects. Then its just a matter of using single
datasource pointing to this common repository for your reports.
