Stabilization in FCE?

I asked this question as part of another post but I think it got lost in another thread. One thing I really like about iM09 is the new stabilization effect. I had that as part of iM06 with the Slick plugin. They don't seem to have it for FCE.
I have found two Stabilization plugins for FCE, Boris fx Optical Stabilizer and fxStabilizer. Does anyone have experience with either? Any others to recommend? Hopefully FCE5 will have it when ever it comes out. Thanks in advance for any info. This forum is very helpful.

I have just downloaded iStabilize to see how it compares with the stabilisation in FCP 6 and Motion.
Unfortunately, I can't get it to open, other than the license request page. All the relevant items in the menu are also greyed out.
I have downloaded again in case there was corruption in the first.

  • IMovie image stabilization and FCE 4.0

I imported some video in Imovie in order to stabilize the video. I'm so shaky without a tripod.
Anyway once all the clips have been detected for stabilization what do i do to get that into FCE? Do i have to export each file or can i do a makeshift sequence then save as an FCE file? Does it bring in the image stabilzation with it if i do it that way.

You can either export it as an XML file for use within FCE or as a separate Quicktime file. The Quicktime approach is the most foolproof, as FCE will simply treat it as another video file.

  • Using image stabilization in FCE

Can anyone help me with using the image stabilization filter in FCE. I have some pretty shaky ski footage I would like to eliminate the shake if all possible.

    Hi
If You are using FinalCut 3.5.1 the ImageStabilazion is near OK.
    Previous versions a joke.
    In FCE 4 it's omitted.
Yes in FCE 3.5.1 it works but the result isn't impressing.
You set a high contrast spot as reference (eg a candle flame, lamp etc.) and the area that it moves around in.
Then render - a hourly task - take a walk, dinner and sleep and it will eventually
    reach end.
In FinalCut Pro - There is SteadyCamera - This works more Pro like but here it
does not only calculate sequence on TimeLine but the whole material so one has to
do the Import/Capture right from beginning. eg 30 sec clip (30 min material) was
estimated to about 40 hours rendering.
Alt. is to use a Plug-in to FinalCut Express 4 - fxStabilizer™ (Google it).
also avaliable to iMovie HD 6 where it does a fairly good job - slight sharpness loss
In iMovie'09 - Well we have to see. Won't we ?

  • FCE compatibility with Panasonic PV-GS180 ?

Just wondering if anyone knows if the Panasonic PV-GS180 camcorder with work with FCE 3 on PPC eMacs, and/or FCE 3.5 on Intel iMacs with integrated video memory?
    Thank you!

I should work fine. It's a DV camera and has a FireWire out that you can connect to your Mac. Just don't try using the USB out with FCE - that won't work.
In regard to the camera, whether your Mac is PPC or Intel doesn't matter, nor does the version of FCE, nor does the Intel GMA video in the Macbooks and Intel Minis. If you have an Intel based Mac, however, you do you need to go with FCE v3.5 or higher.
It's a nice little package at a reasonable price, but if you haven't purchased the camera yet, see if you can find a suitable model with CCDs larger than the 1/6" CCDs that this one has and also optical stabilization. You will notice the difference.

  • FCE and 3D Stereoscopy

In 3D stereoscopy the post production is at least just as imprtant as the production itself. I've been using FCE with Tim Dashwood's Stereoscopic 3D Toolbox to create the video about the rig. I thought some maybe interested. 3D stereoscopy is coming with big push early next year. the web site for that is: http://www.timdashwood.com/stereo3dtoolbox/Stereo3DToolboxHome.html .
In 3D electronic or optical stabilization has to be turned off, because the differential changes between the two views provide the wrong cues and are just counter productive. I've constructed an amateur 3D rig, which works very well and is based on the Merlin. Here is a YouTube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THU5XeRIeOA. Better quality (but anaglyphic - requiring glasses) are at this site: http://www.vimeo.com/7281780 . The system is quite light and portable. The stereoscopic 3D is mostly in the "Pro" domain, and I am hoping that some amateurs will become interested as well, so that we can get more industry support.

I used the Stereo3D Toolbox plugin referenced in the original post. There are several tutorials on it's use. The rest is pretty much standard FCE use. Unfortunately, due to the nature of combining two streams, there is a LOT of rendering. I combine/process individual clip pairs into side-by-side paired sequences, then re-import them and treat them as clips for actual editing (clipping, re-ordering, transitions, audio, etc.), and if necessary, re-apply the plugin and change the output mode (FCP has nesting on the menu, which is explained in the tutorials, but I could never figure it out in FCE). Look over the tutorials or search for them on YouTube under Stereo3D Toolbox. Then, if you still have questions, feel free to message me either here or on YouTube. Here is the YT link, which you can see in HD: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZdlYm3zcTY&feature=player_embedded . It is little different in FCE, but it works with little improvisation.

  • Motion Stabilize vs Shake Smooth Cam

    Hello all,
I am a Final Cut Express user that is looking to take some camera jitter out of a few clips I've taken. I know that FCE has and image stabilizer filter but for the life of me I can not seem to get good results by using it. This may or may not be operator error but in my defense I have done some research on using it. I also have access to Motion as well as Shake and in my research I've discovered that these apps also have tools for image stabilization.
I've also discovered iStabilize which is much more consumer based (probably a good thing based on my sklills) but it would require purchasing it and it mostly likely will not provide the results of Motion or Shake (if I can figure out how to use them).
To remove the video camera shake, which app will most likely produce better results and what additional considerations should be noted?
Keep in mind that I have a decent background with FCE but virtually no background in Shake or Motion. I have however reviewed the manuals and watched a few demos. I've also launched both apps and have taken a stab at both (again with limited results). In motion I was able to apply the Stabilizer behavior and actually export the clip but I'm pretty confident I'm not utilizing it to the fullest as my clip is still very shaky. In Shake I was able to start a new script and add the Smooth Cam node but I could not figure out how to export the clip. Can I export as a quicktime file so I can easily put it back into my FCE project?
So I guess my main questions are:
Which app will remove camera shake better?
How do I actually do it?
Before I switched to Mac I used a very basic app for image stabilization. It was not a pro app but it was easy to use and produced decent results. I liked the fact that it had a split screen view where I can compare the clip before and after. From my poking around in Motion and Shake I can't seem to find a similar view.
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated!
ps. Here is an example of the videos I make. Its non-professional but I do like my projects to look decent. If I can learn a little about Motion or Shake and successfully have a good workflow for removing camera shake I will be thrilled. Thanks!

    hi,
I'm not a big Shaker user but i believe you have to apply an Output node in order to render stuff out. However Specialcase is correct since Motion and Shake use the same technologies the results should be pretty similar. Motion is obviously easier to use. Just play around with the settings you'll get there. Motion doesnt have the split pane view, but you can just toggle the filter on and off to compare.
Had a look at your film, and it looks very nice, the images are really stunning, well shot. Does that have camera stabilization in it. Looks pretty good. But did you know that the music track is only coming out of one channel?
    Keep at it

    YOU DA MAN captain mench!
That was just the type of thing I was looking for. It really helped bring the pre-existing knowledge I've gathered from my readings and 1st attempt into scope. I've now got the motivation and confidence to get back into shake and try it again. Thanks!
In regards to the camera and video. Thanks and glad you liked it. I shot it with the Canon HV10. The video I posted wasn't so much an example of the camera jitter as much as it was just an example of what I do. Thanks for the advice either way. I'm looking forward to doing more color correction in my projects too. Up until now I've settled for less. As I learn the apps I'm more interested in making the absolute best I can. I'm sure I don't have to tell you it's a work in progress.
Thanks again. I'll be back if I need more help.
ps. Does color correcting the clip first have any effect on how well Shake and SmoothCam will remove jitter? Also, when I send from FCP to Shake does it remove the interlacing? I noticed that SmoothCam only works with de-interlaced footy. Thoughts?

  • Buy FCE? Mixed formats? Mixed bit-rates?

    Hello All,
    History:
I ran into a very depressing reality about a year ago in iMovie (9). I came to realize that the project I spent months on had dv video with mixed 12 & 16. I ended up with the most depressing sound issues. I don't want to get into the history now and here. I am very tired of people telling me that I needed to record at 16, etc. etc. I know that now but that doesn't do anything to the large number of video files I have, some in 12 and some in 16. I have way too many to export back to the dv and reimport at 16. I am not hung up on the sound quality... if its a little fuzzy, fine. I can deal with that much better that it utterly messing up my "art" and basically stopping me in my tracks from doing what I want to do.
To complicate things, I no longer use that camcorder that I bought a decade ago. I now have Canon Vixia HF S200 (Imovie 9 support says: Canon VIXIA HF S200 - AVCHD dile format - Issues w/ Memory Video stabilization limitations and Filming in Cinema or 24p mode more... ).
I have spent hours and hours perusing forums, blogs, etc trying to figure out how to deal with my dv files with mixed bit-rates. But I still have no idea what program could help me with that...
    1. First I was looking for a video converter to convert all my dv in 12 bit to 16 bit. I don't want a lesson in what I should have done... Is this possible? Can I just take my 12 bit .dv file and convert to .mov in 16? Quicktime Pro? Roxio? In FCE? I really need confirmation on this.
    2. Do I even need to do #1? Does FCE allow me to use video in Avchd, avi, mov, dv (IN 12 BIT AND 16 BIT) in one project? If not, what would one suggest? (that is for a hobbiest and doesn't need the highest quality but maybe simplest route?)
    3. I can "make do" in iMovie, but would be excited to get at least FCE for more options and expand my hobby/desire in art. I'd like ideas on how to move forward in the most effective and logical way. We are pretty slow in our house to modernize. We just got a PS3, but don't plan on burning to blu-ray, at least not yet as a lot of our family doesn't have it and I will burn to standard DVD and youtube most often. I understand that my HD camcorder might have to be dumbed down in quality (still better than what I had)? So thoughts with that might be useful before I get too far ahead of myself but also leave myself room for growth.
I hope on spending $250 to get what I want need. But if there is a much more streamline way to deal with this for $500 or $1000, taxes are coming back, and I could make it work even if it stings, a lot. And although I don't really want to (or am I able to) spend money on this, this is my main hobby and my familiy depends on my renderings as well for preservation of family history, etc. Please advise.
    Thanks in advance!

    I am neuviemmefemme too...
    When I wrote:
I don't want a lesson in what I should have done...
What I mean is each time I have gone searching and read blogs of others who have this same problem or when I have asked for help, all I had found was the response "well you should have recorded at 16 bit". Yes, gotcha. Noted. I am continually learning from my mistake because I am only learning from trial and error, self-direction, manuals, and people telling me what I have done wrong. But, if all one EVER says is "well you shuda recorded at 16 bit audio" and no constructive help on how to work with the error of having all this video with 12 bit audio and to move forward, I'm not going to get anywhere. I got it, I recorded at 12 and should have at 16. (I don't even have a camera that records in 12 bit anymore...) And yet, I am still stuck with hours and hours of digital video embedded with 12 bit audio and an extensive project that I spent months on that will be tossed in the trash if I can't figure out how to convert videos with 12 bit audio to 16 (or find out if it is even possible and with what software) so that all the video clips can co-exist in this project together (all in the 16 bit range).
So back to your constructive help - I'm finally getting somewhere. You are saying that QuickTime Pro will allow me to convert my .dv files with 12 bit audio to another video format that has 16 bit audio. (AIFF suggested?). Should I expect a loss in sound quality? (which is fine, just curious).
I do not understand when you say the iMovie captures as DV (.dv) stream and FCE cannot use that format w/o conversion. I thought that iMovie projects could go directly into FCE for further editing, etc? Will the project be prompted to be converted? I am not understanding this...
In your second point, you write that FCE works natively with DV (quicktime) and AIC. Does AIC=AIFF? In 1 you mention that I should convert to AIFF so that FCE can work with it natively?
It seems I need further understanding of the different file formats. I haven't been able to fully understand what makes the different formats names different other than some work in some and some work in others, but it doesn't make much sense to me and I'm not really sure what will work in one or the other? Is there a resource that explains this well?
And finally, FCE doesn't work with .mov or .avi? ("All other formats must be converted prior to importing into an FCE project"?)
Thank you very much for your help

  • Fx Stabilizer - iMovie 06

I am still running iMovie 06 HD, by choice, and am looking for a 3rd party image stabilizer plugin that will work with either iMovie 06 HD and/or FCE 4.
I tried downloading a Demo of fx Stabilizer on 8/20/09, and it did an excellent job.
The only downside is the edited clip shows a rectangular *BLUE BOX* showing the parameters of the edit, even when I export to Quick Time or FCE.
Is anyone familiar with the fx Stabilizer product?
    http://www.digitalthoughtsoftware.com/fx/
Am I receiving this *BLUE BOX* because I am using a Demo version of fx Stabilizer?
I emailed this company 36 Hrs ago asking for help and offering to buy their Pro version, if they can assure me this *BLUE BOX* is not there.
Does anyone out there have any feedback, or suggestions?
Please do not waste my time recommending iMovie 09.
I'd purchase it if I could export iMovie 06 to my external drive and still use iMovie 06.
I really would be very appreciative of some timely suggestions that would help me resolve this issue, as I need to stabilize 3 frames of this project before exporting to FCE 4 for final editing.
    Thanks!

yepp, that is their version of copy protection ..
downloaded the demo (and their example video..) - works as promised.
    I do own geethree.com 's Slick8 package, which incl. a Stabilizer too ..
both work same, .. both have the 'problem', not to show any preview...
you have to fly thru the dark..
I assume, purchasing a licence# from f/x will vanish that 'box'.
usually, such a watermark will NOT vanish from allready applied effects.
you have to erase the effects (click on clip, hit backspace) and apply gain...-

  • FCE vs IMove06 vs iMovie09

I've tried search the web but haven't found a direct answer to my issue.
A number of years back I did a lot of editing with iMovie6 and was happy with it. I also had a number of GeeThree Slick plug-ins. As of now all of my video is either Hi8 or DV. When iMovie08 came out aswith many others I played with it and didn't like it. iM09 is a significant improvement but as I've read doesn't play nice with DV to DVD conversions. However I really like the Stabilization and Pan/Zoom/Crop features. I have those in iM06 with the Slick plugins. But since iM06 is an orphan app I decided to finally make the leap to FCE4. However there are two questions I have.
    1) Are there any good plugins or other solutions for doing stabilization and Zooming / Cropping in FCE?
    2) What is the relationship between Clips imported into iM06 and those into FCE? Can I transfer them from one program to another? Do I have to do a conversion first?
    3) What are the best resources (books, websites) for educating myself about FCE and in particular it's relationship to iM06.
    Thanks, Alan

    1. You have crop and zoom ("scale" in FCE-speak) tools in FCE. I'm not aware of a good stabilization tool. Do a forum search, as there have been a couple of threads on that subject.
    2. Export from iMovie to QuickTime in settings that match your FCE Sequence.
    3. Apple has a number of tutorials posted on the web. There are several good training resources. My two favorites are Final Cut Express Editing Workshop by Tom Wolsky (frequent contributor to this forum) and Apple Pro Training Series: Final Cut Express by Diana Weynand. Each is $25-30 on Amazon.

  • Stabilization: iMovie9 to FCE4

I import my tapes into iMovie9 and use stabilization. Then I import the folder with the stabilized shots into FCE4. Is there anything I have to be aware of when working with these stabilized clips or can I handle them like the clips imported directly unstabilized into FCE?

Note the error that he mentions, so read carefully.

  • Unable to capture DV to FCE, apple support told me a PC is the way forward!

    Hi there
I recently bought an apple imac with a view to editing DV footage taken previously.
I had captured some of these tapes on to a PC before buying an imac. These files I was able to edit on FCE and imovie (once I had transferred them from the pc hard drive). HOWEVER although I could control my DV camera through imovie and FCE none of my old DV tapes could be captured to the imac. An error message states that the frame rate is incorrect.
I have apple care protection and have spent ages trying to get support for this only to be told by apple support that FCE and imovie will not capture my old DV tapes! The support person told me that I should go back to a PC if I want to do the job properly!
Unfortunately I have just spent thousands on this very nice looking imac (and FCE) that is apparently unable to do the most basic capturing. Does anybody have any ideas (other than going back to pc) for getting my DV footage captured?
Needles to say I have found all this incredibly frustrating as a new apple user. Are these sorts of issues common to imacs?
    cheers
    rupert

    Hey Rich,
thanks for getting back to me,
I shot tape previously (in 2000) on a sony mini DV camcorder set to SP. I have since bought a new sony mini DV camcorder (DCR-HC40 NTSC).
With the new camera and a PC I was able to capture my 2000 tapes and edit them. I was also able to edit the earlier footage I had transffered from my PC hard drive to the i-mac on i-movie and FCE.
Unfortunatley everytime I have tried to capture my old tapes directly onto the i-mac I have had the message "preview disabled" from FCE and the following from i-movie:
"The camera is sending half-sized frames, which iMovie can’t accept. Check your camera’s record mode (this is the setting that affects recording quality, which determines the total recording time on a tape). The mode must be set to “SP” or “LP.” If that doesn't help, try removing all the cables and batteries from the camera, wait a minute, replace them, and then reset the date, time, and record mode."
I have spent weeks on the support site and found a thread that recommended re-installing quicktime etc but nothing has worked.
I connect to the i-mac via firewire and am able to control the camera, capture my newly recorded miniDV's (so it is not a problem with the proprietary software application etc) but nothing seems to work for my old tapes.
Apple support told me that apple doesn't do older miniDV's and that a pc would be the only way I could capture my tapes. I couldn't believe it! Unfortuatley I no longer have access to my old pc.
Any ideas? Is there any other way of getting DV onto my i-mac?
And thanks for your interest in my problem here
    regards

  • How can I convert from color balance in FCE to color balance in FCPX?

Let me start off by saying that I've been having an issue with a project in Final Cut Express - a project I'd put a lot of time into and thought I was finished with. Before continuing on, I encourage you to take a look at my other thread: https://discussions.apple.com/message/18702933?ac_cid=op123456#18702933
Realizing that there may be no one who can walk me through fixing my project as is, I decided to download a trial version of Final Cut Pro X and see if I could replicate my project there and have more success (after all, it was only a matter of time before I switched anyway).
So, in my original project in FCE, I keyed a lot of frames with different color balances. I downloaded the Ripple Training color balance effect to do just that, but the sliders are set up differently. In FCE, they range from -1 to 1. In FCPX, they range from 0 to 1. I'm wondering how I can conveniently convert the values from FCE to FCPX. Being terrible at math has made this much harder.
Just by drawing a diagram, like the following, I can figure out the basics:
    FCE
    [-1]-----[-.5]-----[0]-----[.5]-----[1]
    is equal to:
    FCPX
    [0]-----[.25]-----[.5]-----[.75]-----[1]
Since I have very specific numbers, not all of which can be easily converted using a basic diagram like the one above, I definitely need some help here. For example, one of the values in FCE is .77. What would that be equal to in FCPX? It's probably something simple, but like I said, I'm stupid when it comes to math.
Thanks to anyone who can provide me with some help here, although I still hope that I'll end up having no reason to redo everything in FCPX.

Well, the "math answer" is .885…but I'm afraid that's not likely to be of much help. FCPX and FCE have absolutely nothing in common, including filters land color correction. So even if you sent the time comverting all your numeric values, I'm guessing you'll wind up with a mess and be very frustrated with all the time wasted in the workaround.
If I read your original FCE thread correctly, I if it were my project., I'd do a test on a short clip in X to see whether yoi can the effects and quality you expect. If you can, great.  Build you project from scratch and learn a new NLE at the same time.
    Good luck.

  • FCE can no longer read my project...

So everything was all well and good and today I tried to open an FCE file and I get the message: "This project is unreadable or may be too new for this version of final cut."
The project is using HDV Apple Intermediate Codec 720p30. There is no live action footage it was all After Effects HD renders using the Animation codec. I've never had a problem with this type of footage before.
It worked fine yesterday, and I made it with my version of final cut express. The only conceivable thing I can think of that might have messed things up is a .psd file I added to the project yesterday. I've never had a problem with that before though. If anyone knows how I can fix this or at least open the project please let me know. Thanks.

  • Unable to capture HDV with Sony HDR-FX1 in FCE 4

    Hello all,
Been using an HDR-FX1 for a while, shooting mostly DV, and today I began experimenting with HDV. I shot 8 minutes of footage with the camera in HDV mode.
When I setup FCE 4 for Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60, the capture window doesn't recognize the camera. However, if I set the FX1 to down convert to DV via firewire, FCE recognizes the camera and I'm able to capture.
How do I (or can I) capture HDV into FCE 4 with the FX1? Is there something (a setting perhaps) that I'm missing? Do I need to jump to FC Pro for this?
My system: 1.6 GHz PowerPC G5 (tower), 2 GB RAM, Sony FX1, FCE 4.0, QT 7.3.1
    Thanks in advance,
    tg

I had a similar issue with iMovie08 import using HDR-HC1... You may want to try this to see if it helps:
1> Close the import app (FCE, in your case)
2> Unplug the FW cable from the camcorder (Most important step)
3> Go into the Sony menu and re-select the HDV settings (explicit HDV, not Auto + Conv off) in the camcorder
4> Re-connect the FW cable, and restart FCE
I use these steps successfully while switching between HDV and DV imports from my camcorder using iMovie 08. Hopefully, this resolves your problem with FCE. Later this weekend, I plan to experiment (for the first time) with FCE HDV import to try and see the export quality difference between FCE and iM08 (which apparently downconverts everything to 540 lines!).
