Standard Account can see into Admin Account!!

I just set up a Standard account to verify a problem and found, what I think is a serious security problem. While in the new Standard Account, when following the path MacintoshHD/Users/AdminAccountName I could see into the Desktop folder and two other folders I had created at the Home level. Documents, Music, Movies, etc all had the red stop mark on them. Logging into the Admin account and following the same path, but to the Standard Account, I could NOT see into the desktop folder - it had the red marker on it. This is the first time I have set up a standard account in a long time but I don't believe that this behavior was evident before. My system is up to date (1.4.5 and the latest security patches v1.1). Thanks, Will

Log into the admin account and select one of the folders you were able to see from the standard account; next, choose Get Info from the File menu and set the permissions on that folder to No Access for Group and Others. Mac OS X will show you the contents of a folder if the UNIX file permissions or access control list on it allow you to do so; this is the default for some parts of your home folder. Changing the permissions as described above will stop any account except for you and root from being able to see the contents of those folders; any administrator account can execute commands as root.

I just got the new itunes and I can open itunes and see my music but whenI try and go to the itunes store it just loads to a white page. I try and refresh and go to the home page and nothing happens. I can sign into my account and the tabs for the itunes store pop up like they normally would when browsing the itunes store but when I click on one of them, it is a blank page. Is there a setting I need to change? Does it just take an extremely long time to load? Please help!!

I'm having the exact same problem.  I upgraded to the newest version of iTunes on my iMac and ever since I did the store is a blank white screen.  I can get my library content but the store is a no go.  Is there any one out there with a solution?

  • How can i delete admin accounts

how can i delete admin accounts on imac running lion

Apple says that admin accounts should be only used for tasks that require them, and not for any other reason. Apple even goes so far as to say to never browse the web or check email while logged in to an admin account.
The reason is for security. When logged in to an admin account, everything you do, every program and process you run, runs with elevated admin privileges. Running with higher privileges than is necessary can be a security risk. There is no reason for your web browser, for example, to be running all the time with admin rights.
If you're currently running as admin it's easy to switch. Make a new admin account, and change your previous account from admin to standard. You can then continue using your old account as you always have.
You'll find that you rarely if ever need to actually log in to the admin account. Nearly all admin and even root tasks, like installing software, can be done from any non-admin account, by entering the admin username/password when prompted.

When I create a photo stream in ios6, everyone who is logged in to my iCloud account can see and edit my stream (on their iPhones only). Not just the email addressees that I sent the photo stream link to. Is that how photo stream security is meant to work? Is so it means my whole family can see any photo stream I set up. Hence no security? Can't share the pics with the wife then :(

The whole idea to an icloud account is that one user uses it and has all their devices synced together.  Different users need different Apple IDs to create their own icloud accounts.  Note that everyone can still use the same ID for an iTunes account (to share purchases).

If I have 3 family members sharing the same account, can we create sub accounts to seperate their log in and they have access to music already purchased?

There is no such thing as "sub-accounts".
Multiple Apple ID's can be used on a single device.
Created unique Apple ID's for each user and use those Apple ID's on the appropriate devices from iCloud and iMessage.  This will not affect the media on the device.

  • In regard to Time Machine. I have two accounts one is an admin account, the other is a standard user account. When I implement Time Machine when I am logged into the Admin account, is the standard user also backed up?

    in regard to Time Machine.
I have two accounts on one Macbook Pro running OS 10.6.8. One account is an admin account, the other is a standard user account.
When I initially implemented Time Machine I was logged into the Admin account. I allowed Time Machine to erase the drive and backup the computer. Is the standard user account contents also backed up?
Also after I completed the Time Machine backup session, I turned off Time Machine and removed the portable hard drive. I plan to return in to Time Machine after being away from the portable hard drive for approximately a month. After a short interruption of approximately one month, when the Macbook Pro is reconnected and Time Machine is turned back on, will Time Machine create a new instance of a backup? WIll the back up contain the standard user account changes?

Time Machine backs up by default all the user accounts.
When you reconnect the backup drive after one month, Time Machine will do an incremental backup and it might take a while minutes to hours depending on how much has been changed. With a gap of a month, Time Machine will have to do a lengthier than normal survey of both drives to see what has changed, so it might take some time preparing for the backup. The backup will include everything that has changed since the previous one.

  • Can't get into Admin account

I came home the other day and my computer was off, meaning the power had apparently gone out. I turned it back on and everything seemed normal when I got to the login screen. I put in the password for my admin account and it started to log in like normal but then all of a sudden the screen goes black and this white text appears. It says something about Darwin at the top of the screen and asks for a login name and password. I type in the info and it says that no folder exists for my login name and it was logging me in as "/" or something close to that. Well I managed to figure out that typing exit gets me back to the main login screen. I signed into to one of the other accounts on the computer, and it worked fine (which is how I'm typing this now). I looked in the Users folder and strangely, the 2 non admin accounts had one folder each, but my admin account had four, named Admin 1, Admin 2, etc. I searched the Apple website for similar problems but couldn't find anything useful. Any ideas?

I'm not sure how much this may help.
Problems with lost Admin account, or
    Restore admin user status.
If your admin user loses admin status for whatever reason (and it has happened to a few people), and you do not have a second admin account, then try the following:
Boot into single-user mode. At the prompt enter:
    mount -uw /
    nicl -raw /var/db/netinfo/local.nidb -merge /groups/admin users your-username-here
    Press RETURN after each command.
To restart in OS X enter:
    reboot
I recommend you write down these commands in a monospaced font. Be sure to carefully note where there are spaces in the command line.
Because of the abnormal shutdown I also suggest you do the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Added a Standard Account but now can't access Admin Account

I had one account on my PowerBook and Acct#1 had Admin privileges. Then, to test Parental Controls, I added a Standard account, Acct#2. Then, I made Acct#2 Admin and Acct#1 I changed to Standard.
Now, when I start-up, I'm only presented with Acct#1 which is Standard. Can someone please help me with one of the following?
    1) How do I make Admin Acct#2 appear for log-in?
    2) How do I give Acct#1 Admin rights again?
Right now, all I see is my Standard Acct#1 and can't manage my system. I must get back to having an Admin account.
    Thanks, Travis

  • Changed Permissions - Need Help - Can't Hide Admin Account

Help... I was trying to find a way to change some system icons, and found some commands online. The icons changed successfully but now my Administrator account shows up when I log in. Prior to this the admin account was hidden and only my user account was displayed at the login. Below are the commands used to change the icons:
    cd /System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources
    sudo mkdir BACKUPS
    sudo cp *.png BACKUPS/
    sudo chmod o+w *.png
    open .
After doing this in terminal I was able to access the icon files and modify them. But now how do I return the permissions back to the system ? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

Thanks everyone for your suggestions, for some reason the Terminal commands indicated they worked ok but did not hide the Administrator account at the login screen. What I did find on the web that worked is, in OS X there is an app called "Property List Editor" which allows you to hide and unhide accounts through a GUI based editor. This app works really well, and there is plenty of documentation regarding this app online. Also it allows you to add or remove the "Other" option at the login screen which will allow you to login into the hidden accounts, this appears very useful for security since you can hide as many accounts as you like. Hope this helps anyone else with this problem, and once again thanks to those of you who have offered suggestions.

  • Can't disable admin account

I have created a new account on my macbook so that I can make it an admin and disable the admin status on the account I have been using.
But when I go to the 'Accounts' pane, the 'Allow user to administer this computer' flag is grayed out, so I can't remove the admin abilities.
    Can anyone help?

Yes it is. Does that make a difference?
Wait a minute - is that the answer to the former or the latter question?
If the former, you can't remove this user from the admin group if the short user name is "admin". You were warned about this when you originally set up this account as an admin account.
You'll have to change the short user name to something else first if you want to make it a non-admin account.
If your answer was to my latter question, see my post of a few minutes ago at the bottom of this thread.

  • HT204370 I purchased twp movies, which I can see in my account history have been deducted.  They are not in my library!  I can't figure out how to access them!  Totally frustrated and getting angrier by the minute since the period of time I had to watch h

I purchased two movies which I can see have been deducted from my account.  However, they are not in my library after waiting a long time for them to download.  I can't access the movies I have already paid for!  They are also not in my cloud.  I am completely frustrated.  At this point I just want a refund and will never try to watch a movie on here again!

If you bought them on your iPad then they should have downloaded into the iPad's Videos app - is that where you are looking for them ?
If they aren't there then have you tried searching for them via the iPad's spotlight search screen ? Pull down the centre of the home screen in iOS 7, swipe your first home screen to the right in iOS 6 and below.
If that doesn't find them either, and they don't show in the Purchased tab in the iTunes store app for redownloading (films won't show there in all countries), then try the 'report a problem' page to contact iTunes Support (these are user-to-user forums) : http://reportaproblem.apple.com
If the 'report a problem' link doesn't work then you can try contacting iTunes Support via this page : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption
