Standby Database implementation in Apps
Is there any points to be consider while implementing Standby database in Application 11i ?
Go to sourceforge.net and search for java and database. Their is an all Java database engine over there in development and functioning. its opensource and you should be able to get good discussion on this issue in their Forums.

Physical standby database implementation
Hi!
I am trying to implement a Physical standby database, I have already done it with both the primary and secondary in the same server and successfully shipped the logs and have it configured using Data Guard.
But Now I am trying to implement the Physical standby in a separate server, but the logs are not getting shipped, I am using Oracle 9i Enterprise edition. I have checked all the steps, but not able to find the reason, why the logs are not getting shipped to the standby.
Also I am not able to discover the Primary node from the Standby and I have Windows 2003 server in my standby and Windows XP Prof. in the Primary, Is this the reason, why my logs are not getting shipped?
Please help. Thanks in Advance.
RadhikaHi!,
Thanks for ur response, I am posting my alert log here... can u please help me... I probably think it is the OS issue too... Your inputs are greatly appreciated...
Thanks
Radhika

Implementing Oracle StandBy Database - Suggestion & Tips needed Pls.
Dear Sir,
With rerefence to high availability of our database, we would like to implement a standby database. Regarding this, i have few doubts and request all you expert to pls. help me out. This goes like this:
1. What is DataGuard.? Is it Separate product in Oracle or Part of Oracle Database Server - Enterprise Edition.?
2. Is standby database implemented / created ONLY using DataGaurd?
3. Do we need to buy another license for Oracle Database when i go for implementing StandBy Database.?
Basically we want if my main production server is down, it should automatically go to my StandBy database and does not stop my application. This is possible i feel by implementing Standby database. And we are thingking to do it. In that respect, we have above query.
I would request if somebody could be guide us and help.
Thanks.
Regards,
Kamesh Rastogiyou can get DATAGUARD in Oracle Database Enterprise Edition !!
this is script for Craeting Standby DB!!
Creating Standby Database
Primary Server Configuration
1.In the TNSNAMES.ORA of Primary DB add the entry of the Standby DB
IRCSSTDB(This is the service name in Primary DB to connect to Standby DB) =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = IRDBACK)(PORT = 1512))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVICE_NAME = IRCS(This is the actual INSTANCE name of Running DB on Standby DB)
2. There is no need to Make any Changes in the Listener.ora of PRIMARY DB
Keep LISTENER.ORA of Primary as it is
Copy Listener.ora from Primary DB to Standby DB and make following changes
Delete All the Extra Existing listeners.
(These Modifications are for the STANDBY DB)
LISTENER =
(DESCRIPTION_LIST =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = IRDBACK)(PORT = 1521))
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC))
SID_LIST_LISTENER =
(SID_LIST =
(SID_DESC =
(SID_NAME = PLSExtProc)
(ORACLE_HOME = /ora01/app/oracle/product/9.2.0)
(PROGRAM = extproc)
(SID_DESC =
(SID_NAME = IRCS)
(ORACLE_HOME = /ora01/app/oracle/product/9.2.0))
3.In the INIT.ORA of Primary DB add Following…
log_archive_dest_2 = "service=STBY optional/Mandatory scope=BOTH"
log_archive_dest_2 = Enable
log_archive_min_succeed_dest = 2
We can skip this & Dynamically add with the SQL*PLUS..
Standby DB Server Configuration
1.In the TNSNAMES.ORA of Standby DB add the entry of the Primary DB
primary1(ISSL)(This is the service name in Standby DB to connect to Primary DB)=
(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp) (PORT=1521) (HOST=PRIMARY MACHINE NAME))
(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=IRCS(This is the actual INSTANCE name of Running DB on Primary DB)
2.Copy Listener.ora from Primary DB to Standby DB and make following changes
Same as Above
LISTENER =
(DESCRIPTION_LIST =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = IRDBACK)(PORT = 1521))
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC))
SID_LIST_LISTENER =
(SID_LIST =
(SID_DESC =
(SID_NAME = PLSExtProc)
(ORACLE_HOME = /ora01/app/oracle/product/9.2.0)
(PROGRAM = extproc)
(SID_DESC =
(SID_NAME = IRCS)
(ORACLE_HOME = /ora01/app/oracle/product/9.2.0))
3. Connecting to an Idle instance..
1.C:\ oradim –NEW –SID ircs –INTPWD pwdfilename –STARTMODE auto –pfile E:\oracle\oradata\pfile\init.ora
2. C:\ set oracle_sid=IRCS
3. C:\ sqlplus /nolog
4. SQL:>connect sys/ircl as SYSDBA
5. SQL:>startup nomount pfile= E:\oracle\oradata\pfile\init.ora
6. SQL:> alter database mount standby database;
7. SQL :> ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE;
4. we can also add these parameter in INIT.ORA of Standby DB
1.standby_archive_dest= /u00/app/oracle/admin/sec/arch (Same path as in
(log_archive_dest_1) in init.ora
2. Fal_client=standby1 (Service Name)
3. Fal_server=primary1 (Service Name)
Troubleshooting….
1. Check Init.ora of Primary DB
2. Try to open Standby Database in normal mode try to connect it with normal user from different Machine.
3.check *.logs file on Standby Database
4.Check v$archive_dest on Primary DB
5. lsnrctl services <listener name>….For Checking Listener, for service -
Implementation of ORACLE9i RMAN physical standby database`
Sir's,
How to implement RMAN in the physical standby databaseHi Ashu Goel,
Can u let me know any thing abot the prerequistw of implementation with the configuration settings of the above said.If I understand you correctly you want to use rman to backup an already existing dataguard setup.
Doing this would be very similar as a normal rman backup with the limitation you have to stop the recovery during the backup window and run the backup in mount mode.
To make a consistent backup of the standby database, make sure that the last shutdown of the standby database was clean and that it was not placed in recovery mode after that time, and then mount the control file. For example:
sqlplus SYS/oracle@sbdb1 <<EOF
SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE
STARTUP NOMMOUNT PFILE=initSTANDBY.ora
ALTER DATABASE MOUNT STANDBY DATABASE;
EOF
You can back up the standby database when it is in any other mode, but the backups will be inconsistent.
Start RMAN and connect to the standby database with the TARGET keyword (not the AUXILIARY keyword) and the recovery catalog database. You must be connected to the recovery catalog. For example, enter:
% rman TARGET SYS/oracle@sbdb1 CATALOG rman/cat@catdb
If do not have automatic channels configured, then manually allocate one or more channels of type DISK or sbt. Note that you are connected to the standby host, so the backups are made by server sessions on the standby (not the primary) host.
This example backs up all the standby datafiles as well as the control file and archived logs by using automatic channels:
BACKUP DATABASE PLUS ARCHIVELOG;

Script has to be run from auxiliary.
Great details, but what I don't see is how you connect in RMAN.
Example
Start RMAN
$ORACLE_HOME/bin/rman target=sys/@recover2 auxiliary=sys/@reclone
Recovery Manager: Release 11.2.0.2.0 - Production on Wed Feb 22 14:50:31 2012

connected to target database: RECOVER2 (DBID=3806912436)
connected to auxiliary database: RECLONE (not mounted)Nothing in your tnsnames or listener jumps out as wrong. I copied them into my text editor and compared against my working ones.
Generally for active duplication I start the future standby on a pfile NOMOUNT.
Auxiliary Instance Initialization Parameters Needed :
DB_NAME
CONTROL_FILES
DB_BLOCK_SIZE
( add extra parameters like DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT and LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT instead of using the SET command - clean up standby spfile right after duplication )
Then start RMAN and finally run a single line duplication command.
$ORACLE_HOME/bin/rman target=sys/@primary auxiliary=sys/@standby

SCN can be differ in standby and it can be behind to primary based on the backup you have restored. Of course by performing recovery you can synchronize standby with primary database. You can use incremental backups for standby using link http://www.oracle-ckpt.com/rman-incremental-backups-to-roll-forward-a-physical-standby-database-2/

How to delete archivelog with RMAN in the Primary and Standby database?
Hello,
I am working on Oracle 10gR2.
My question is :
How could I implement a automatized and secure way of:
1) Delete archivelogs on my PRIMARY server only when these logs are successfully TRANSFERED to all my standby databases?
2) Delete archivelogs on my STANDBY server only when these logs are sucessfully APPLIED to the database?
Thanks a lot for your help!on 10G

RabiHello;
Generally for the connection to work you need to add something like this to the listener.ora file :
(SID_DESC =
(global_dbname = STANDBY.hostname)
(ORACLE_HOME = /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0.2)
(sid_name = STANDBY)
)You should stop and start the listener on the Standby after adding this. Also your tnsnames.ora must be correct on both the primary and the Standby.
Also you need an INIT for the Standby side :
STANDBY.__db_cache_size=343932928
STANDBY.__java_pool_size=4194304
STANDBY.__large_pool_size=4194304

1. New Standby start NOMOUNT on new password file. ( On Oracle 11 you must copy and rename the file from Primary server )
2. Hard coded listener on new Standby server.
3. Correct tnsnames.ora files.
4. Correct duplicate command.

Error while mounting Standby database
Hi all,
I am getting ORA-01102: cannot mount database in EXCLUSIVE mode error when truying to mount the standby database.
SQL>alter database mount standby database ;
If anyone faced the same issue please guide me.
Thanks and Regards
Salih KMThis is script for Standby..
(These Updations are for the STANDBY DB)
LISTENER =
(DESCRIPTION_LIST =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = IRDBACK)(PORT = 1521))
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC))
SID_LIST_LISTENER =
(SID_LIST =

(PROGRAM = extproc)
(SID_DESC =
(SID_NAME = IRCS)
(ORACLE_HOME = /ora01/app/oracle/product/9.2.0))
3.In the INIT.ORA of Primary DB add Following…
log_archive_dest_2 = "service=STBY optional/Mandatory scope=BOTH"
log_archive_dest_2 = Enable
log_archive_min_succeed_dest = 2
We can add this Dynamically with the SQL*PLUS..
LISTENER =

(PROGRAM = extproc)
(SID_DESC =
(SID_NAME = IRCS)
(ORACLE_HOME = /ora01/app/oracle/product/9.2.0))
3. Connect to Idle instance..
1.C:\ oradim –NEW –SID ircs –INTPWD pwdfilename –STARTMODE auto –pfile E:\oracle\oradata\pfile\init.ora
2. C:\ set oracle_sid=IRCS
3. C:\ sqlplus /nolog

(log_archive_dest_1) in init.ora
2. Fal_client=standby1 (Service Name)
3. Fal_server=primary1 (Service Name)
Troubleshooting….
1. Check Init.ora of Primary DB
2. Try to open Standby Database in normal mode try to connect it with normal user from different Machine.
3.check *.logs file on Standby Database
4.Check v$archive_dest on Primary DB
5. lsnrctl services <listener name>….For Checking Listener, for service -

Hi, I have both primary and standby database in ASM and I need to recover the standby database as it's falling behind for too long. The steps I did are:
1. backup full database on primary
2. create a standby controlfile and copy to /tmp on the standby
3. on the standby, RMAN>restore standby controlfile from '/tmp/std.ctl';
4. RMAN>restore database;
5. SQL>recover managed standby database disconnect;
However, the recovery always shuts down and I get the error:
ORA-01110: data file 1: '+W08_DATA_DG/w08p/datafile/system.295.662256331'
What's wrong with my steps?

Problem in recover physical standby database(Data Guard) by rman
Hello to all
I have created a physical standby database ,I want make backup of it by rman and when I lose it's datafile I can restore it ,making backup and restore is fine but in recovery I encounter some problem
scenarios is follow
1- In rman I create a backup of standby database by this command:
backup database plus archivelog delete all input;
2- I run this comman in rman for recover standby database
run{
2> set until scn 1392701;
3> restore database;
4> recover database;
5> }
(1392701 is extracted from this query "SELECT MAX(NEXT_CHANGE#)+1 UNTIL_SCN FROM V$LOG_HISTORY LH,
V$DATABASE DB WHERE LH.RESETLOGS_CHANGE#=DB.RESETLOGS_CHANGE# AND LH.RESETLOGS_TIME =
DB.RESETLOGS_TIME;" "http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14239/rman.htm")
but RMAN result is like this:
executing command: SET until clause

I myself have found the solution , when I recover the standby database
it do recovery but at the end of recovery it raise the error(RMAN-06054: media recovery requesting unknown log: thread 1
seq 118 lowscn 1392700) but if I begain redo apply before open the database
and I wait till all redo apply process start and communication between the
standby database and the primary database start, then I can
open the standby database and no error will raise
but if befor restarting redo apply I open the database I'll recieve the
ORA-01152: file 1 was not restored from a sufficiently old backup
ORA-01110: data file 1: '/u01/app/oracle/oradata/sari/system01.dbf' error

Creating a Standby Database with the Same Directory Structure
Hello gurus,
I am self-learning the feature Oracle Data Guard, so I am testing it on Oracle 10g R2.
At Oracle documentation there is a section F.4.: Creating a Standby Database with the Same Directory Structure*, that explains how to create a standby database with RMAN but there is something that I don´t understand:
In the standby server, I created a database with the SID equal to production database* with the objetive to have the same directory structure, but when I try to startup nomount the standby database with pfile appear this expected error:
ORA-16187: LOG_ARCHIVE_CONFIG contains duplicate, conflicting or invalid attributes
So my question is: Is possible have the Same Directory Structure on both: Production and StandBy server?
Thanks in advanced.Uwe and mseberg: thanks for your quick answers
I have a doubt: How can you have the same directory structure if you have differents SIDs?, for example if you follow the OFA suggestions you would must have:
On Production server: */u01/app/oracle/oradata/PRIMARY/system.dbf*
On StandBy server: */u01/app/oracle/oradata/STANDBY/system.dbf*
Or you created the directory structure manually on StandBy server? For example replacing the string STANDBY* to PRIMARY* before create the database using dbca.
Do you understand my doubt? Excuse me for my english.
Thanks. -
Differences in creating a Standby database in RAC
Hi All
SO...: Solaris 11 SPARC 64
DB...: 11.2.0.3.6 (64 bits)
My experience regarding creating Physical Standby Databases is restricted in only single instances to single instances. I am reading the book "Oracle Database 11g Release 2 High Availability", but, in parallel, i would like to hear from the experienced DBAs here some opinions and recomendations in how to implement a RAC to RAC solution. Below are my doubts:
1) In single instance, using RMAN Backup to create the Physical Standby, i have to create manually a static Listener Entry. But in a RAC env, the listener is a resource, so, i have to create that resource in the Clusterware manually, or there is other approach?
2) I have to create a pfile and start the instance in NOMOUNT mode, but in RAC, i have to start all the nodes in NOMOUNT, or just one node is sufficient?
3) The archives will be replicated from FRA to FRA. Is this the best approach?
My main concern is with the Listener and SCAN questions... If you have any considerations, they will be most welcome.
Thanks in advance.Following link might be helpful
