Standby database maintenance
Hi there,
I use windows 2003 server, oracle 10.2.0.4.0.
My question is related to maintaing a standby database
1. Do we need to take RMAN full backup of standby database on a regular basis? At the moment I dont take backups of standby database.
2. I have FRA on standby database. The archivelogs from primary go to FRA on standby. I delete my archivelogs as follows:
DELETE ARCHIVELOG ALL COMPLETED BEFORE 'SYSDATE-3';Though the archivelogs are delete there are still empty folders of archivelogs that are not deleted. How to get rid of them automatically.
Regards
Hello;
Do we need to take RMAN full backup of standby database on a regular basis? At the moment I dont take backups of standby database?
No, assuming you backup the Primary. The Standby is a copy of the Primary so you are covered.
Remove empty folders of archivelogs that are not deleted. How to get rid of them automatically?
On Oracle 10 I never found a way to do this automatically, I had to write a script. But I use Linux so it won't help. In Oracle 11 this is no longer an issue.
This appears safe : ( And only uses OS commands )

How to run automated maintenance task on a logical standby database ?
Hi
I realize that i do not see any job runs for automated maintenance tasks on my logical standby database.
Which are the conditions that must be fulfilled for automated maintenance tasks to run?
Thanks
ChristophHi,
In an Oracle Data Guard environment, the Scheduler includes additional support for two database roles: primary and logical standby. You can configure a job to run only when the database is in the primary role or only when the database is in the logical standby role. To do so, you set the database_role attribute. This example explains how to enable a job to run in both database roles. The method used is to create two copies of the job and assign a different database_role attribute to each.
By default, a job runs when the database is in the role that it was in when the job was created. You can run the same job in both roles using the following steps:
Copy the job
Enable the new job
Change the database_role attribute of the new job to the required role
The example starts by creating a job called primary_job on the primary database. It then makes a copy of this job and sets its database_role attribute to 'LOGICAL STANDBY'. If the primary database then becomes a logical standby, the job continues to run according to its schedule.
More Information please cheek below link:

Oracle 11.2. I am building standby database as a reporting database.
Can physical standby database only be open read-only state? My understanding is yes, but I like to confirm it.
If I want my standby database to be read/write, only logical standby database can make it?
Thanks for the help
S.Hello again;
Do you think logical standby read-write feature can create a temp table on the fly?Yes. That should work.
Another option ( might depend upon the size of your reporting database ) is materialized views.
On some of the smaller databases this works well, and ALL write options are available. A logical Standby should work but you might think about the maintenance it requires before you decided on a solution.
Search the Data Guard forum for logical questions might help you decide too.
Kind of old but

Problem with data guard Creating a Physical Standby Database turorial
There is a tutorial of Creating a data guard Physical Standby Database:
http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/11gr1_db/ha/dataguard/physstby/physstdby.htm
I tried to install it on two servers. One for primary database second for physical standby.
I have error on C. Creating the standby database over the network, action #6:
"On the standby system, set the ORACLE_SID environment variable to your <physical standby SID> (i.e. orclsby1) and start the instance in NOMOUNT mode with the text initialization parameter file."
When I try to connect to idle instance there is an error pops up:
C:\>sqlplus / as sysdba
SQL*Plus: Release 11.1.0.7.0 - Production on Thu May 21 16:28:10 2009
Copyright (c) 1982, 2008, Oracle. All rights reserved.
ERROR:
ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error
I'v checked listener and it is runned. There is no service for database because there is no database yet.
The question is did some one installed data guard configuration using this tutorial? Is there any errors in it? What should I do to finish this installation? On Windhose for every instance a service must have been created using the oradim command.
Oracle tutorials are usually Unix-centric, as Windhose is an odd man out, so they don't discuss that bit.
'Kindly do the needful' and create the service prior to starting the instance in nomount mode
Hint: oradim is documented and has a help=y clause.
IIRC there is an option in database control (in the maintenance part) which automates everything.

Manual Standby Database not in sync with missing archivelogs
Hello,
OS: Solaris
DB: Oracle 11.2.0.1 EE
Not Using ASM or RAC
I have a Production database that is in archivelog mode and a Standby DR server.
Both servers (Prod, Standby) have exact same structure and db name/version.
We manually scp archive logs and recover them to a manual standby database via SQL Scripts "cron". (I.E. set autorecovery on; recover standby database;)
We recently got out of sync with our log files and have not been applying them to the standby. As part of Prod Maintenance, these log files were deleted and are not available anymore.
I've tried several ways to "rebuild" our standby database. I have tried to Shutdown prod, backup all the db files and scp them to standby, re-create standby controlfile and startup mount and recover standby.
Every time I try to apply a new archive log via recover standby, these are the errors:
ORA-00279: change 211077622 generated at 1/27/2012 12:18:42 needed for thread 1
ORA-00289: suggestion : /oradump/arch/PROD/PROD_arch_1_69486_736618850.arc
ORA-00280: change 211077622 for thread 1 is in sequence #69486
ORA-00308: cannot open archived log '/oradump/arch/PROD/PROD_arch_1_69486_736618850.arc'
ORA-27037: unable to obtain file status
SVR4 Error: 2: No such file or directory
Additional information: 3
ORA-10879: error signaled in parallel recovery slave
ORA-01547: warning: RECOVER succeeded but OPEN RESETLOGS would get error below
ORA-01152: file 1 was not restored from a sufficiently old backup
ORA-01110: data file 1: '/oradevices/PROD/oraPRODsystem1.dbf'
When I check v$log_history, the new logs have not been applied.
I've also tried the "Restore from incremental backup via SCN" method with same results.
Is there a way to re-create the standby clean and ensure that the log chain that is currently broken gets fixed or reset?
I would eventually like to get DataGuard in here, but that's not the case at the moment.
Thanks for your suggestions.
-Davif you are using the cold backup to create the standby database, Check that have you followed the following steps or not.
1. remove
all the datafiles and controlfiles from the standby database.
2. Create a new standby controlfile of the production for standby using the following cmd
'alter database create standby controlfile as 'Location';'
3. move the new controlfile to standby database server location as specified in initialization parameter file.
4. Restore all the datafiles to its appropriate loaction which was taken through cold backup.
5. startup nomount
6. alter database mount standby database;
7. recover standby database.
scp the archive log sequence that is asked by the database, from production.
You can try this steps. -
About Data Guard - Physical Standby Database
Dear All,
I have read many documents regading Data Guard.
I am about to setup Data Guard in our current environment but want to clear few tings.
I have a confusion between physical and logical standby database.
What I have read from different documents is:
-Physical Standby Database in (11g)
1) It is the most efFicient
2) I can be either in mount or open state
3) Select queries and reporting can be done to improve performance of the primary database.
4) Schema on primary and standby database is always the same
-- Logical Standby Database
1) You can create additional tables, indexes, etc.
2) Always in open mode
3) Select queries and reporting can be done to improve performance of the primary database
Now our scenerio is, that we have one server at the moment, OS is linux and operating system is 11g. We want to setup an other server in another country, will also be 11g on Linux in a way that it acts as standby/backup server. Schema and data is always the same. In case due to unavailability of primary server, standby server acts as the primary server (This has to be automated). The reason for unavailability could be any like maintenance work on primary server, network or hardware failure at primary server. The last and the most important thing is that users from this country where we will setup standby database will insert/update data on the primary server BUT queries and reporting will be done from this newly created standby data.
Kindly recomend the best Data Guard in this scenerio and kindly correct me where I am wrong.
Thanks, ImranA logical standby has various limitations on things like data types. It's also a much more complex architecture, which makes it more likely that something will break periodically and require attention. Applying redo to a physical standby is code that has been around forever and is as close to bullet-proof as you'll get. And you would generally prefer to fail over to a physical standby-- if you do things like create new objects in the logical standby, you may have to get rid of those objects during a failover to get acceptable OLTP performance.

How to monitor 8i physical standby databases ?
Hi guys,
It seems easy to create and monitor standby databases for 9i and 10g instances through OEM 10, but what about 8i standby db ?
Has everything to be done manually : creation, monitoring, maintenance ?
It is at least possible to monitor redo transport and applying for example with an older version of OEM ?
thanks for your help
Antoine10g EM is the first version, which really monitors (almost) the whole landscape. Previous versions don't deal with Dataguard configurations. 10g EM still can monitor an 8i (must be at least 8.1.7.4) database, but on a very basic level. Remember 8i is desupported for a long time now. 9i is also desupported, but many sites still use it, that can't be ignored by Oracle.

Purge archive logs standby database
How can I purge automaticly the archives logs in the standby database?
I have oracle versiĆ³n 11.2.0.2 with +ASM in solaris.
Thanks.My bad.
Will update my notes.
This is still there :
Applied Archivelogs Are Not Deleted On Physical Standby Site from Flash Recovery Area [ID 404338.1]
Since you have your DELETION POLICY set correctly you can also run something like this on the Standby :
run {
allocate channel for maintenance device type disk;
delete archivelog until time 'sysdate -5';

Creating a new schema in a Logical Standby Database
Hi All,
I am experimenting with logical standby databases for the purpose of reporting, and have not been able to create a new schema in the logical standby database - one of the key features of logical standbys.
I have setup primary and logical standby databases, and they seem to be running just fine - changes are moved from the primary to the standby and queries on the standby seem to run ok.
However, If I try to create a new schema on the logical standby, that does not exist on the primary, I get "ORA-01031: insufficient privileges" errors when I try to create new objects.
Show below are the steps I have taken to create the new schema on the logical standby. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Script has to be run from auxiliary.
Great details, but what I don't see is how you connect in RMAN.
Example
Start RMAN
$ORACLE_HOME/bin/rman target=sys/@recover2 auxiliary=sys/@reclone
Recovery Manager: Release 11.2.0.2.0 - Production on Wed Feb 22 14:50:31 2012

connected to target database: RECOVER2 (DBID=3806912436)
connected to auxiliary database: RECLONE (not mounted)Nothing in your tnsnames or listener jumps out as wrong. I copied them into my text editor and compared against my working ones.
Generally for active duplication I start the future standby on a pfile NOMOUNT.
Auxiliary Instance Initialization Parameters Needed :
DB_NAME
CONTROL_FILES
DB_BLOCK_SIZE
( add extra parameters like DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT and LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT instead of using the SET command - clean up standby spfile right after duplication )
Then start RMAN and finally run a single line duplication command.
$ORACLE_HOME/bin/rman target=sys/@primary auxiliary=sys/@standby

Logical Standby Database in NOARCHIVE Mode
Hi,
I have configured a Logical Standby Database for Reporting purposes. A Physical Standby Database is running for MAA. i.e. in case of Role Transition (switch/Failover) the Physical Stdby Db will get the role of the Primary.
The logical standby database is creating a lot of Archive Redologs files, nearly every minute. Redolog files are 50MB and there is no work done in db during the time. I'm NOT using Standby Redolog files.
Is there a need for logical standby database to be in NOARCHIVELOG mode? The Primary is definatley in ARCHIVELOG mode.
Thanks for any responses.
regards
Sahbahi,
well there are two things to the above:-
1. there was an archive file nearly every minute:
this is due to a db recovery. for some reason, the db was in inconsistent state, after a sudden shutdownof the OS. I was on a test environment, on windows vista, unfortunately. unimportant ... a reboot solved it.
2. Logical standby db in NOARCHIVE MODE when setup for the purpose of Reporting.
As long as the MAA configured for the primary db, such as physical standby db, and a second, the logical standby db setup purely for the purpose of reporting, which then can run with NOARCHIVELOG mode, after converting the physical standby db to logical.
logical standby db uses Streams architecture, so this method brings cost, time and performance advantages to the customer.

Sahba -

Error while trying to open physical standby database - (DATA GUARD)
Hi Everyone,
I have problems in opening the database of the physical standby in read- write mode/ read only mode. I have a primary server which is running on 2 node RAC and the standby on a seperate single server being used as DR. I recently got this server and my aim was to isolate the standby server from primary server and perform few test. As it has never been tested even once.

SCN can be differ in standby and it can be behind to primary based on the backup you have restored. Of course by performing recovery you can synchronize standby with primary database. You can use incremental backups for standby using link http://www.oracle-ckpt.com/rman-incremental-backups-to-roll-forward-a-physical-standby-database-2/

ORA-27041: unable to open fileFirst check whether those files are exist in that location or not and if file names are different other than primary then rename file locations. Also check the permissions on the folder/files.
