Start up tone

Hi all, does anyne know if it's possible to turn off the 'DUUUUHHHHHHHH' that the MBP emits on start up? It is off or reduced if I had the speakers on mute or low before I had last switched it off.

You can use the freeware StartupSoundPrefPane11b2 - VersionTracker or MacUpdate. It can mute or reduce the volume of the startup chime.

Hi there, I bought a Nokia 302 last week and generally am pretty happy with it, but i want to be able to turn the start up tone off all together, its driving me potty! Ive tried the live chat facility here and the usual trouble shooting stuff but nothing doing.
Live Chat suggested I go to Settings, then Phone settings, but this model has Settings then Profiles and no option at all for Start up Tone. Any help!? Id be so grateful. thanks

hey..yeah i have the usual: themes, tones, lights etc but not one of these has an option for start up tone! Arghgh!! Lol

  • Fans & hard drive spin, no start up tone or display... help?

I just sold my old G4 tower on ebay, and the buyer tells me there's no start up tone or anything on his monitor, but the hard drive spins and so do the fans. The CD drawer opens but holding "c" and booting from the software disk doesn't work. He's tried resetting the pram, pressing the cuda switch and removing the battery. I of course made sure the computer ran before I shipped it, and in fact this computer has never given me any problems whatsoever. Does anyone have suggestions for what to do from here? Or even a guess as to what happened... I'm confused because there must have been some damage during shipping, but the box was fine and the computer was fine inside as well. On top of that, I'd expect some kind of an impact to affect moving parts like the hard drive, but that spins with no problems, and if it was just a hard drive problem booting from the software disk should work.

Hi, Alex, and welcome to the Discussions!
Any chance that the new Mac owner might join the Discussions and get an independent review and advice from the Members? We'd be happy to help him try to get up and running, as long as it's kept independent from this particular topic (since this really isn't a place for a potential buyer-seller dispute...)
What model Mac are we referring to here?
As previously referred to, the startup memory settings are commonly lost when one has a weak, dead, or defective battery and the Mac is then disconnected from an AC power source for a period of time. Oftentimes, the Mac can be restarted by removing the battery completely, doing a PMU reset, hooking up the power cord, and restarting with the battery removed. This might confirm that the Mac is indeed okay, perhaps maybe just needing a new battery (which he can test with a voltmeter, per Texas Mac Man's Tutorial).
You didn't mention whether or not the owner is using your original monitor, mouse and keyboard. This could be pertinent information in troubleshooting this, if the PMU reset/battery doesn't correct things.

  • HT1270 Used the right memory, both for my iMac and MacBook Pro, iMac worked, MacBook Pro didn't start (warning tone). Any idea?

Used the right memory according to page, both for my iMac and MacBook Pro, iMac worked, MacBook Pro didn't start (warning tone).
    Any idea?

I suggest you buy your memory from OWC or DataMem. Both guarantee the memory works or will replace it if it does not, no questions asked, within their 30 day return period. I've used both for over 20 years, and no complaints.

  • Grey screen only after start up tone

Have a 2008 Mac Pro, when I start it up, I get the start up tone, then it just goes to a gray screen.  A few times yesterday, the Apple logo would show up with the spinning wheel...even once got the "No Entry" sign.  Is this a power supply issue or a drive issue or something else?  Is there any way to get the info of the drives?

The chime is generated in software after millions of instructions have been executed. It indicates that if an appropriate Boot device can be found, booting is likely.
The gray screen can only occur after the software initializes the display.
The Gray Apple is loaded off a Boot device -- it is not present in the ROM code available at Startup.
In summary, you have progressed far beyond fundamental problems like power supplies. This article address the "No entry" sign:

  • Start up tone disable?

    Hi.
Does anyone know how to disable the start up tone? The only way I can do it is to have the mute button on when I switch the mac off. It won't do it then when I turn it on next. All a bit fiddly so I was wondering if there was a way to just disable that.
    Many thanks.

  • Start up tone echo

My Black Mac Book is running fine. However, it has recently developed a disconcerting habit. Upon start up here the open tone like normal. Then in about 5 seconds I hear a short, soft echo of the tone. Five seconds later I hear another short, soft echo. Then it starts up normally.
Like I said, the MacBook otherwise runs normally, but I have always heard alterations in the start up tone can help diagnose problems.
Do I have a problem and how do I solve it.
    Thanks in advance.

Try resetting your PRAM. If that does nor work, do an Archive and Install.

  • Freeze after start up tone

I'm looking for some tech advice.
My MBP was working fine. The next next day I started it and immediately after the start up tone, I received an error message and it asked me to power down the computer by holding down the power button.
The error message can be seen in the screen shot attached. If more info is needed I can add a better screen shot.
I tried rebooting in safemode by holding down the shift key directly after the start up tone, but I received the same error.
    Any thoughts from the community?
    OS X 10.7.2 MacBook Pro 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4GB SDRAM

I wiped the hard disk and then made a restore via Mac OS X Utilities. About 20% of the time needed into the Time Machine restore, a error message popped up saying it wasn't possible and that I have to restart my MacBook Pro.
When I restarted the MacBook Pro, it goes directly to Mac OS X Utilities. I tried the Time Machine restore and I the same thing happened again, "About 20% of the time needed into the Time Machine restore, a error message popped up saying it wasn't possible and that I have to restart my MacBook Pro.".
I restarted again and tried to reinstall OS X Lion. After I sign into my apple account and verifies that I purchsed Lion in the past, it say it will download and the application and then restart. The amount of time this takes is extremely slow....something like 14 hours. Neverthless, it completed....but when it restarts it goes back to the same Mac OS X Utilities screen.
I have run out of solutions on how to fix my Mac Book Pro. Thoughts?

  • 6700 slide - messages and start up tone

    Hi,
I've got a flashing envelope on my main display screen but I've not got any messages - help!
Also, how do i get rid of the start up tone when I switch my mobile on?
And I thought I'd bought a really simple mobile.
    Thanks in advance.

For the flashing envelope do this:
Menu > Messaging > Options > Sim Messages > Delete all of the old messages you see in that menu.
The startup animation cannot be disabled but you have a few options for the sound:
    1. Put the phone in silent mode before you switch it off.
    2. Press any key (or maybe the end call key) just as the tone starts to sound. Sometimes pressing just before it sounds works too.
    3. In your current profile disable the warning tones. This may stop the sound but will also stop the sound in some games and system notifications.

  • Silencing Start Up Tone

Is there an option to silence the start up tone? I'd like to start up silently!

    Shepherdess,
    Silence.
    ;~)

  • How do I turn off the "bong" start up tone without turning off all other sounds?

How do I turn off the "bong" start up sound without turning off all other sounds?

The start up tone is an important part of the start up sequence however if you want turn it off there are utilties that will do that. You can use Google to find one.
    BTW, if you look in your owners manual it says;
"If you‘ll be away from your iMac for less than a few days, put it to sleep. When youriMac is in sleep, its screen is dark. You can quickly wake your iMac and bypass thestartup process."
My recommendation, follow the manual and don't shut the computer down.

  • G4 not starting, no tone.

What does it mean when the computer fails to make the startup tone and the screen remains black? I tried starting up with the startup CD by holding down the "C" key. That doesn't seem to work? I have been having problems for a while. Today it hung in the middle of a backup from one exterior drive to another. I replaced the hard drive and backed everything up recently.
Is there an interior restart button? My husband claims he fund one on his computer.
    Thanks,
    Mari

In some cases, a third party card to support drives or ports, may not be
correctly seen by a computer whose original configuration did not have
these items; so it would be possible a problem that appeared to be in
conjunction with troubleshooting an issue may not be correctly seen in
the light of the hardware not being original. If you see where a meander
    is trailing off to here.
In Target Disk mode it may be that some cards or PCI items could be
invisible, since only ATA/IDE items should appear if they are on the
correct system bus. Some card upgrades may appear properly in this.
So, there may be yet another issue going on in that computer's config-
uration & finding out what that may be (given the upgrades past stock)
makes this a bit more difficult. In some cases, where a person would
have the original and presumably still working original parts the Mac
had when new, to re-fit them to see if the logic board, processor, &
original circuits & power supply were OK; then you could -maybe test
the configuration as you re-introduced the upgrade third-party parts.
While that can sound delusionally simple, the reality may also be of
nightmarish proportions. If you had a similar working all-original Mac
and then used it to test the upgrade components, then you could see
if the one you have now is at fault, or one of these add-on newer parts.
There probably is a better if not easier way; hopefully someone whose
experience has been in upgrading a tower to at least that extent will
find your post here and kindly offer a few better ideas on dealing with it.
{Oh, in making hard-breaks in sentences, count the words if not sure
and depending on the size of the box they would end up appearing in,
you could guess if you wanted them to include hard-breaks or none at
all; since you get Automatic Text Wrapping if you do not hard-break, in
some sites. This is one of those. I hard-break in forum pages where the
text box is extra wide and when those text-wrap to make long continuous
    sentences that take too much effort to move & read that way.}
I see in here you have hard breaks that appear more random; so none at all,
except to indicate a full paragraph, may work better for you in these pages.
For older computers that can only run certain now-vintage OS versions,
you would have to stick to disk utilities that clearly support them, since
many are not backward compatible from the newest to an earlier OS X.
Buying TechTool for an older (tiger is two steps behind) may be OK if
you can get the correct one for the OS you intend to run it on. Also, if you
get DiskWarrior, Drive Genius, or other third party utilities, be sure they
can really work on the OS X version you have. These have their limits.
Given information from MacTracker on what Apple Hardware Test your
computer should have, that may help you in finding one; since the item
has a version number and there may be an old original software packet
out there for sale cheap that includes the correct disc. (A gamble, as is.)
If you can find a good technician who can spend a little time, who is
aware of the upgrade issues you face, that person may be able to
find some hardware cause given those pros should have more test
tools and software available to them. Trouble with that is 'by the hour
troubleshooting' is not cost effective on older depreciated hardware.
Getting a duplicate, stock, computer of the kind/type giving you trouble
may be a path to consider; one that works. Or a better one, since the
prices have come down. Read through some of the historical LowEnd
Mac site items and other places to see what info there is on the most
reliable of some newer models; or be on the lookout for some of the
last dual processor 1.25GHz G4 towers in good shape on the cheap.
Someone at a mac user group near you may have some ideas; or a
friendly tech at some smaller shop where they may also want your
business (and one you may find worthy of revisiting & trusting) could
be helpful if other conditions lend themselves to that kind of path. I
see some items in craigslist, that may be OK; but only if they run &
are inexpensive, given their lack of any recourse after buying stuff.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Mac OS X start up tone - Still chimes with headphones in

    I've just purchased a new Macbook and on my old Powerbook I put the cable from my JBL speakers in so the start up chime in Mac OS X would not be heard. However, with the new Macbook I can still hear the tone. Is there either;
    1. Any way I can get around this problem, or
    2. Any way to disable the chime completely

Yes, this happened as soon as I got the MacBook. I don't think this is a problem though, and is supposed to be doing this. Look at this post.
    Particularly this part:
    "Huy,
not in front of my MacBook right now, but funny thing, I noticed the startup chime as well when I restarted last night after doing the Quicktime/iTunes update-I had headphones plugged in, but the startup chime came from the internal speakers anyways."
