Start-Up Volume Is Ear-Shattering

Everytime I boot up my Powerbook, the volume is turned up to the max, scaring the crap out of me with each boot. I always turn it down to normal, and make sure it's normal before powering down. But it still starts up with max volume.
Any tips?

Hi, Vlade - You really should be able to control this by setting the volume, but for some reason, that doesn't always work. I know I experience this issue when I reboot after having booted into a clone or Disk Warrior or another secondary startup volume. I understand you only need to press the mute button on startup to disable the chime--never tried that, but if nothing else works, there are a coupe of freeware utilities that can help:

  • Mail's Account Directory - accessible from a different start-up volume?

    I have two internal hard drives in my PowerMac G4. One volume has Tiger 10.4.11 installed; the other had Leopard 10.5.6. I have not yet fully transitioned from Tiger to Leopard, but I want to do so. However, before I do so I want to know if I will be able to:
    (1) run the applications which reside on the Tiger volume when I boot up in Leopard (so that I do not have to waste hard drive space by installing the same applications on two different internal hard drives; and
    (2) access the email messages that reside on the Tiger volume when I boot up in Leopard (so that I can keep all my mail in one place, and so that I can access my email no matter whether I boot up in Leopard, or in Tiger, when I need to use older applications that may not be Leopard-compatible and which I do not wish to spend more money on upgrades).
    Since this forum addresses Mail and Address Book issues, I would like to get a definitive answer to the second inquiry, namely, if I boot up in Leopard, can I access the mailboxes and email messages that reside on the Tiger volume, or must I absolutely (somehow) bring all those messages into Leopard and be compelled to use only one Mac OS to access the Mail application on its associated start-up drive.
    In trying to figure this out myself, I notice that, in the Mail preferences panel, on the Advanced tab of the Accounts button, there is an option called "Account Directory:" that lists "~/Library/Mail" as the path to the directory where email messages are stored. While there is a "Choose" button next to the file path, both the pathname and the button are shadowed out, and I can see no way to activate that option.
    I am a little bit confused here, because the appearance of that option implies that one might be able to actually direct the Mail application to store email messages on a volume other than the start-up volume. However, the fact that the "Choose" button and the actual path name are shadowed out appears to cancel out that capability.
    Can anyone shed light on this mystery? Is it possible to access email that resides in Library of another volume other than the one used to start-up the Mac, and, if so, how is that accomplished?

    yes, you must transfer all your Mail to the leopard partition and use it from there. yes, you are compelled to do so and no there is absolutely no way around it.

  • HT4848 How do I create a Recovery System on my start up volume/hard drive?

    So i discovered the article about using the Recovery Disk Assistant....but, I noticed it says that in order to create a Recovery on an external HD that it requires an existing Recovey System on my start up volume...I assume this means a Recovery partition on my startup hard drive? If someone could explain to me how to create one or if I already have one, I would great appreciate the help...
    If its relevant I am using a
    MacBook Pro Mid 2010
    Core 2 Duo 2.4 Ghz
    4GB RAM
    Intel 120 GB SSD 320 Series

    Hopefully you already have it.
    The only time a recovery partition can be created is during installation from mac app store, it's automatic and cannot be done manually.

  • Ringer volume with ear-bud.

    It seems that my iPhone 3gs remember the music and On-call volume for headphone and speaker separately.
    However, for the ringer volume, iPhone does not remembering separately and just uses same level for headphone and speaker. -_-;
    When I adjust the ringer volume with ear-bud attached, volume control pop-up displayed as 'ringer(headphone)' and 'ringer' for the speaker.
    But, the volume level is shared between them.
    I had done 'reset all settings' from iPhone and the problem is still remain.
    Do you guys have any ideas?

    Why not control Ringer Volume with the hardware volume control keys vs. finding a touch screen based Ringer Volume?

  • Starting up in a start up volume with no OS........Help

    I'm a Pc user who bought an old mac (PowerBook G4- Titanium.) I moderately liked it, until I tried to install classic using an older version of a Powerbook start-up Cd. (Dumb, I know this now, but I am still learning the differences between mac computers.) I bought my laptop from ebay and it didn't come with the original start-up disks. Being new to mac, I went and bought what I thought were the proper replacement ones- (Powerbook G3.)
    I thought I had properly installed classic, and I chose it as my system defalt volume instead of my MAC- Os 10.3.9... So I tried to start up my laptop, and now it is blinking this random question mark. I tried a few different things to start up my mac:
    1. Starting up using the old restore CD= random whirling and no results
    2. Using the install Cd
    3. Using command + alt+ p+ r- 2x;
    4. Using option =(I just got this random blue screen with what looked
    like a refresh button and an enter button)
    5. Holding Command+X= no results
    So in short, I need to change the start-up volume before my computer starts up. I tried the start-up manager; but, thus far I have had no success. Any help that you could supply would be much appreciated.

    violinist31, welcome to Apple Discussions & the Mac community.
    Using option =(I just got this random blue screen with what looked like a refresh button and an enter button)
    Pressing the Option key at startup activates the Startup Manager window. This window shows the available startup volumes (hard drives, CDs, DVDs, etc) Was there not a hard drive icon in this window? If there is a HD icon, click on it & then click on the right arrow.
    Will it boot in Safe Mode? See
    What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? (Mac OS X)
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107392
    Takes a while to run, but it usually "fixes" problems.

  • ClassNotFoundException while calling start-up class in EAR

    Hi,
    I have a seemingly strange problem while executing a start-up class in my deployed
    (exploded) EAR. As suggested in WebLogic docs, I'm using the weblogic-application.xml
    to configure my startup class:
    <weblogic-application>
    <listener>
    <listener-class>com.i2.srm.integration.utils.IntegServerStartupManager</listener-class>
    </listener>
    </weblogic-application>
    When the start-up class is executed, it configures a listener class for some JMS
    queues. But Weblogic JMS code cannot find the listener class, even though other
    classes in the same jar & package are resolved (please see stack trace below).
    Also, here is the dir structure of my application:
    <application EAR dir>
         /APP-INF
              /lib
                   messaging-sb-client.jar
                   sourcingInteg.jar
         /META-INF
              application.xml
              weblogic-application.xml
         /messaging
              /com/i2/srm/messaging/..
              /META-INF
         /test
              /com/i2/srm/integration/test/..
              /META-INF
    Both the listener class & the class 'not found' are in the same jar file: sourcingInteg.jar.

    Avi, I was just waiting for the "servlet hack".
    I really prefer the application client way, much cleaner, no servlet container needed, and could be tested outside the container.

  • Free space on 250gb wont start new volume

    hi i have a 250 GB Samsung external hard-drive but for some reason it only showed me 58.8 GB available so when i opened the disk manager it said there is 116.14 FREE SPACE so i tried making a new volume of that but it won let me it keep saying there is
    not enough space on disk to complete this operation i really need this space since im formatting my computer and i need that hard drive to take some of my stuff on the computer right now ill appreciate any help thank you

    If it is indeed showing as free space have you tried just extending your existing volume instead of making a new one?
    You can right click your existing volume in disk manager and say extend partition and just next through the wizard. It should auto set all the values to consume is all the space.
    Option 2 is to use the command line utility called diskpart. Go to start, type cmd. After the command prompt is open you will type diskpart.
    First list the disks by typing "list disk" then select the disk you wish to work with. Example "select disk 1".
    Then list the volumes, similar to disk you do "list volume". You then select the desired volume you want to extend. Select the 58.8 GB volume similar to selecting the disk. After the volume is selected you will type "extend" and
    it will grow the volume into the free space.

  • Disk is no longer start up volume

    I can no longer use my original hard drive as a start up disk. it does not show up in the system preferences.It has tiger on it. I put leopard on another drive and use that to start up, but would like to use the previous one as well for certain applications. the system folder no longer has an "X" on it. any suggestions on how to make the old volume a start up drive again.
    thanks

    Bad news... You must repair the HD, your best bets are DiskWarrior from Alsoft...
    http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/
    Data Rescue II...
    http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
    This last one would require another HD with plenty of space to recover to.
    Unfortunately, Disk Utility can't fix all that much, and the only other Apple Options are erasing the HD, or installing OSX to a second drive, then using Migration Assistant to move stuff over to the new HD.

  • Start up volume issue

    For the last while now, whenever my imac starts up (or is restarted), it resets back to the standard sound volume, even if it was lowered before being shut down. I don't remember if this happened after a software update, but I'd like to fix it. Thanks!

    I don't know about the G5s, but that has been normal behavior for an iMac Intel since they came out. It happens if there is something analog plugged into the headphone or output port. It doesn't happen if what is plugged into the port is digital or if there isn't anything plugged into the port.

  • Is TV2 suposed to recognise iTunes settings(eg. start, end, volume level)  for music videos ??

    I am trying to run music videos from iTunes to AppleTV2. But any of the settings I have made in iTunes agnats the music video (eg. Video start time, stop time, volume level) don't seem to be recognised by TV2. Is this correct ? If so, how do I control varying volumes levels when playing via TV2 ?

    I have this problem on occasion, below the song title and progress bar there are two symbols tap them 1 at a time and restart not sure witch one but one of them does this. I think the other causes the song to loop

    What is start up volume

    The bit of the hard disk drive that the computer starts up from.
    Officially called a "volume", created on a disk "partition" and, in the case of Macs, usually called "Macintosh HD". That's where the operating system, your applications and your files usually live, unless you choose to "think different".

  • Control of imported audio into the movie that starts from volume zero (sound off)

    Hello everyone!
    I have a series of audio uploaded directly into main swf, it'is an animation, like a cartoon.
    I added a volume control with a dragable "lever" that allows you to adjust the volume. But from 100%...
    What I need is that the volume, the opening of the movie is set to ZERO (0%), then the user will decide to increase it.
    I tried to assign linkage properties, but as I have done is useless ...
    The actions that I have are:
    I attach the file.
    Actions given to the movie clip containing the lever and the dynamic text (which shows the% of volume)
    onClipEvent (load) {
        min = 1;
        max = 100;
        percent = Math.floor((_x-min)/(max-min)*100);
        loop = new Sound();
        loop.start(0, 100);
        volume = 50;
        loop.setVolume(volume);
    onClipEvent (mouseMove) {
        if (drag == 1) {
            _x = _root._xmouse+offsetX;
        if (_x>max) {
            _x = max;
        if (_x<min) {
            _x = min;
        percent = Math.floor((_x-min)/(max-min)*100);
        loop.setVolume(percent);
        updateAfterEvent();
    Actions given to the button (lever dragabile) inside the movie clip
    on (press){
        offsetX = _x-_root._xmouse;
        drag = 1;
        on (release, releaseOutside){
            drag = 0;
    But if anyone knows another system that is fine!

    Welcome to the Apple community.
    If the movie fails at the same points each time and does exactly the same thing each time, I would suspect that it is the video file that has a problem.
    If the problem persists, select the content which is causing a problem and use the 'Report a problem' button in Your Purchase History.

I come back to wiki and remaped the keyboard shortcuts with pulse command, but issue continue.

    I don't think it's an XFCE issue. I use KDE with alsa and pulseaudio and every time I reboot my volume is muted as well. I just unmute it with alsamixer every time, but it'd be cool to have a better solution.
    EDIT:
    After 15 seconds of googling, I found a solution.
    Set your volume to whatever you want it to be when you boot and use the command:
    alsactl store
    This will save your current configuration and it will be the default one every time you boot.
    Solution comes from this thread.

  • Warning message at managed server start up for an EAR application

    Hi all, I have an wli <b>cluster 8.1 sp3 running on AIX</b> machines. When i deploy an <u>webservice application</u> (ear) i get an exception in the node which does not host admin server. The strange thing is that the application seems to be deployed correctly. My suspicion, about the exception, is the it's caused by the different directory structure of the two nodes. As you can see at bold words, weblogic tries to create ear at a directory that does not exist at this node. It finds the latter webbus from the path of admin server at the other machine. My question is straightforwad, Can we have different paths at cluster nodes ? In this case, Should we deploy ear (webservice application) in a different way ? <Feb 22, 2005 12:33:26 PM EET> <Info> <Deployer> <BEA-149060> <Module faxManWeb of application faxManAppl successfully transitioned from prepared to active on server wliBusServerPatmosDevel.> <b>javax.management.InvalidAttributeValueException: Unable to create path to /appl/webbus/bea/user_projects/domains/ITIC-DEVEL-WLI/adminServerDevel/upload/faxManAppl/faxManAppl.ear</b> at weblogic.management.internal.BootStrap.apply(BootStrap.java:580) at weblogic.management.internal.BootStrap.apply(BootStrap.java:474) at weblogic.management.mbeans.custom.Application.getFullPath2(Application.java:3476) at weblogic.management.mbeans.custom.Application.getFullPath(Application.java:3055) at sun.reflect.NativeMethodAccessorImpl.invoke0(Native Method) at sun.reflect.NativeMethodAccessorImpl.invoke(NativeMethodAccessorImpl.java(Compiled Code)) at sun.reflect.NativeMethodAccessorImpl.invoke(NativeMethodAccessorImpl.java(Compiled Code)) at sun.reflect.DelegatingMethodAccessorImpl.invoke(DelegatingMethodAccessorImpl.java(Compiled Code)) at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java(Compiled Code)) at weblogic.management.internal.DynamicMBeanImpl.getAttribute(DynamicMBeanImpl.java(Compiled Code)) at weblogic.management.internal.ConfigurationMBeanImpl.getAttribute(ConfigurationMBeanImpl.java(Compiled Code)) at com.sun.management.jmx.MBeanServerImpl.getAttribute(MBeanServerImpl.java(Compiled Code)) at com.sun.management.jmx.MBeanServerImpl.getAttribute(MBeanServerImpl.java(Inlined Compiled Code)) at weblogic.management.internal.RemoteMBeanServerImpl.getAttribute(RemoteMBeanServerImpl.java(Compiled Code)) at weblogic.management.internal.MBeanProxy.getAttribute(MBeanProxy.java(Compiled Code)) at weblogic.management.internal.MBeanProxy.invokeForCachingStub(MBeanProxy.java(Compiled Code)) at weblogic.management.configuration.ApplicationMBean_Stub.getFullPath(ApplicationMBean_Stub.java:543) at com.bea.wli.broker.manifest.ApplicationManager.load(ApplicationManager.java:71) at com.bea.wli.broker.MessageBroker.registerApplication(MessageBroker.java:999) at com.bea.wli.management.WLIAppListener$1.run(WLIAppListener.java:294) at weblogic.security.acl.internal.AuthenticatedSubject.doAs(AuthenticatedSubject.java:321) at weblogic.security.service.SecurityManager.runAs(SecurityManager.java:118) at com.bea.wli.management.WLIAppListener.applicationInitialized(WLIAppListener.java:290) at weblogic.j2ee.ListenerInvocationAction.run(ListenerInvocationAction.java:46) at weblogic.security.acl.internal.AuthenticatedSubject.doAs(AuthenticatedSubject.java:321) at weblogic.security.service.SecurityManager.runAs(SecurityManager.java:118) at weblogic.j2ee.J2EEApplicationContainer.notifySecureListener(J2EEApplicationContainer.java:4721) at weblogic.j2ee.J2EEApplicationContainer.notify(J2EEApplicationContainer.java:4706) at weblogic.j2ee.J2EEApplicationContainer.activate(J2EEApplicationContainer.java:2201) at weblogic.j2ee.J2EEApplicationContainer.activate(J2EEApplicationContainer.java:2146) at weblogic.j2ee.J2EEApplicationContainer.activate(J2EEApplicationContainer.java:2094) at weblogic.management.deploy.slave.SlaveDeployer$Application.setActivation(SlaveDeployer.java:2976) at weblogic.management.deploy.slave.SlaveDeployer.setActivationStateForAllApplications(SlaveDeployer.java:1751) at weblogic.management.deploy.slave.SlaveDeployer.resume(SlaveDeployer.java:359) at weblogic.management.deploy.DeploymentManagerServerLifeCycleImpl.resume(DeploymentManagerServerLifeCycleImpl.java:229) at weblogic.t3.srvr.SubsystemManager.resume(SubsystemManager.java:131) at weblogic.t3.srvr.T3Srvr.resume(T3Srvr.java:966) at weblogic.t3.srvr.T3Srvr.run(T3Srvr.java:361) at weblogic.Server.main(Server.java:32) --------------- nested within: ------------------ weblogic.utils.AssertionError: ***** ASSERTION FAILED ***** - Hi,
    The problem is that the <b>directory /appl/webbus/bea/user_projects/domains/ITIC-DEVEL-WLI/</b> does not exist at the node, because we have move it to <b>/appl/webdbus/</b> instead of <b>/appl/webbus/</b>. The question is why applications need to create adminServerDevel/upload directory and how can override it.
    Thanks in advanced
