Startup disk is full, but I cannot see the files that are taking up the space?

HI,
I have a 500GB server, in which less than 200 MB is available. Yet when I Get Info on the folders, the combined used of them is under 100GB. Where is the other 400GB???
The available space is going down by the minute too, even though I am not doing anything!
when I open the console it comes up with lots of references to com.apple.aslmanager?
but my biggest problem is that because I have such little space left the Force Quit Applications keeps appearing and will not let me work or look at anything!
HELP!

OK, so suddenly i have 333GB of SPACE! But I didn't touch anything!

  • My startup disk is full but I can't find out what takes up all the space..., My startup disk is full but I can't find out what takes up all the space...

Several times I tried to find out what fills up my space but I couldn't figure it out. I have pictures and some real short movies on my mac and maybe 10 word documents that's it. Is it a possibility that I have a virus or something? I'm really not familiar with these kind of things...

Don't remove the entire Application Support folder, it's very important. You may find that there are folders inside belonging to applications which you're sure you won't use - for example, Garageband tends to store a lot of loops there, so you can remove its subfolder if you don't want to use it.
For the Dropbox questions, don't delete subfolders from your Dropbox in the Finder, or they'll be removed from your cloud Dropbox. Either use selective syncing (which should delete the appropriate folders immediately) or uninstall Dropbox completely from your computer (which will retain everything in the cloud).

  • Startup disk almost full but cannot log on to delete items

when I start up my MacBook air it said "start up disk almost full" but I cannot even log on my act to get to my home screen to attempt to delete stuff... what do I do?

    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
    b. If Step 1a fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
    c. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    d. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use the technique in Step 1b, 1c, or 1d to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.

  • It shows startup disk is full but i use just only 350gb of my hd disk from 500gb.

my macbook shows its startup disk is full but i use just 350gb of my 500gb hd.

That pretty clearly shows the drive is full. So first a question: Why do you believe there's an error? How do you know there's only 350 GB in use? Second is to do the following:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Again, check your drive usage for any changes.

  • My computer says startup disk is full but it isn't.  Is there a fix?

I'm getting a message saying my startup disk is full, and I need to delete files.  However, I'm only using about 15% of my hard drive (macbook is less than a year old).  Any suggestions what might be going on?

How do you know you're only using 15% of the hard drive?
There could be a number of things going on. In the first instance, I'd run Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and use it to run Verify Disk.

  • I got a message saying that my startup disk is full and I need to delete files.   What files and where can I find them?

I got a message saying that my startup disk is full and I need to delete files.  I don't know where to fined the files I need to delete and don't understand how my disk can be full.  Can someone help me with this?

To see how much disk space is available ...
Click your Apple menu  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.
Photos, video, documents, etc. all require disk space.

I looked through some other discussions like this, and found out that all of my files are correct. Some people are saying that they needed to remove Filebot, but I can't find that on my computer. • I cannot ope PDF files that are within a web link.  Neither Safari nor Firefox will work.  If I receive a PDF file as an email attachment, I can open it with either Adobe or Preview.  I'm running 10.6.8 on an iMac.

I'm going to re-state this.  Several weeks ago, I had installed Security Update 2012-004 on my iMac.  I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.  Immediately afterwards, my Mail 4.6 was GONE.  Mail 4.2 was there, but the system would not open it.  The Apple Support Communites quickly solved my problem.  The problem lay within the Update.  Now, I cannot open PDF files that are contained within a website, i.e. a lunch menu that is on a restaurant website.  This happens on both Safari and Firefox.  If someone sends me an email with an attached PDF file, I can open the file with either Adobe or Preview.  This is happening only on my iMac.  My MacBook Pro, also running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 has not experienced either the first or second problem.  Thanks for any help you can offer.

  • Why can't I open/see PDF files that are embedded in an email or sent through the internet?

I can read/see PDF files that are attached to an email, but I can't see/read them if they are embedded in an email or sent through the internet.

I have a similar problem. I can open, read, and save PDF files, but I can't view my online bank statement on my Mac. The statement opens automatically if I use a PC, but on my Mac the page says I need Adobe Reader to view my statement. I already have the latest version of Adobe Reader. The problem seems to be that that the plugin only goes to the Libray. It doesn't get installed into Safari or into FireFox either.

  • How do I see the clients that are connected to the access point?

    Hello,
In Wireless Control System (WCS), how do I see all the clients that are connected to the Access Point? I can do a particular search that if I know the mac address. But what I really like to know is that which clients is connected to the network. That means it sould be able to show me, example, Client A is connected to AP 1. The problem in WCS is that I can't do that. Can some please advice how I am able to do this? Thanks.

    Two ways:
    First:
Under monitor, go to Access Points, then chose the target AP and click on it to open a menu, go to the Current Associated Clients tab.
    Second:
User the search tool on your upper right corner, type in the target AP name, execute the search, on the results, click view list, on the list chose you AP and then go to the Current Associated Clients tab.
    Enjoy.
    Phil.

Well, everything that you have bought with her Apple ID prior to getting your own Apple ID is forever hers. Apple will not transfer content from one ID to another. But in the case of the Mac, contact iTunes Customer Service and request that they send your issue to the Account Security Team and ask that the Mac be released form your mother's account so you may register it with your account. Then you can accept the iLife apps into your account for any future updates.
