STARTUP MANAGER NOT OPENS

Hi,
A few days ago, I formated my MBP ( and installed Snow Leopard). Then I mentioned that the Startup managager (in order to boot windows xp) does not open.
I tried both "option" keys but with no result. What happened ?? What can i do now in order to fix this issue..?
Please hepl!
Thank you for your time!

Three more experiments.  Try each one to see if the problem gets fixed.
1. In your home directory's Preference folder move com.apple.systempreferences.plist to the desktop.  See if startup disk preferences works now (a new plist will be created).
2. Again in Preferences move com.apple.finder.plist to the desktop.  The force quit the finder (apple menu, force quit).  Finder will relaunch and create a new plist.  Try system preferences again.
3. Reboot in safe mode.  Try the system preferences.  Then reboot normally.

  • ? mark folder, Startup Manager not finding HD

Ok, so yesterday I purchased a used G5. When I plugged my SATA HD into the bay, put the installation DVD into the DVD rom, and started up the computer, I recieved a folder with a question mark in it. I tried the numerous suggestions, but nothing has worked. I held the C key down, and the DVD didn't start. Everything is plugged in, and yet nothing happened. In fact, it went to a grey screen, and then to the question mark folder. When I run the Startup Manager, it shows no volumes to select. No DVD, no HD, nothing.
Now, at the time the HD had WinXP on it. I formatted it, and still nothing. So, I went out and bought a new SATA HD to run, and it still does not work. I run the Startup Manager, and still nothing shows up. I run the open firmware, and it sees the DVD, but when I try to boot, it gives me a "Load Size Too Small" error. I try to use the dir command, and I still get nothing. I have tried an external DVD rom, and still nothing. It cannot be my HD, because the second one is brand new. The DVD is brand new as well, so I am at a loss. I have tried everything. Can anyone help me?

Hi LCLCoM, and a warm welcome to the forums!
When I run the Startup Manager, it shows no volumes to select.
The HD won't show unless it recognizes an OSX Install on the drive, so that one is understandable.

  • Download Manager Not Opening In Web Browser

    Operating System:
    - OS X (10.4.8)
    Web Browser(s) Affected:
    - Safari v2.0.4 (419.3)
    - Mozilla Firefox v2.0
    Description of Problem:
When attempting to download a file, the download manager fails to open and the file is instead sent to the browser as a URL.
    Example:
When clicking on http://www.website.com/foobar.dmg instead of download manager opening and transferring the file to the local drive, it is instead opened in a new browser tab/window as a URL and is never downloaded.
It does not matter whether the file is dmg, tar, zip, etc. This happening in both my Safari and Firefox browsers (which makes me think it's something OS specific).
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    SoulGrind

    Hi SoulGrind,
It does not matter whether the file is dmg, tar, zip, etc. This happening in both my Safari and Firefox browsers (which makes me think it's something OS specific).
Or possibly plug-in specific? Did you happen to install SpeedDownload at some point as this sounds like the symptom of a bad install.
Try uninstalling SpeedDownload via the installer file over at http://www.yazsoft.com/sitepages/download.html - it has an uninstall option. To download it, you should be able to right click/control click on the file link to obtain the file.
    Good luck!

  • Firefox Profile Manager not opening (V20.0.1)

I'm trying to open the Profile Manager in order to create a 'developers' profile. I was originally following this blog's instructions using the Run command.
    http://blog.mozilla.org/addons/2009/01/28/how-to-develop-a-firefox-extension/
The problem is that it's just opening up a new Firefox window, and nothing else. I then went to get more updated documentation, here:
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles?esab=a&as=aaq
And alas the same results. Here are the commands I have tried:
    firefox -p
    firefox -P
    firefox -profilemanager
    firefox -ProfileManager
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -p
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -P
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -profilemanager
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -ProfileManager
They all return the same result, which is just opening a new Firefox window.

Gah sorry about the mess of the commands. Here's my reattempt.

  • MacBook Pro flashes file folder with question mark and startup manager will not run

My son's MacBook Pro won't boot (gets the flashing file folder with question mark).  When I try to open startup manager (holding "option" key during boot does not do it).  Other posts suggest inserting the install disk, but I am pretty sure that for Lion, there was no disk, it was just off the website through the App Store.  Any further suggestions?

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Reinstalling osx startup manager does not recognize cdrom

I have a macbook pro and It will not boot all the way it gets stuck at the blue background screen with my airport icon and gmail icon in the upper right and get nothing else. I have tried every solution I can find and nothing has worked. I wanted to try to reinstall osx but cannot boot from the cd. You may have some bigger problems, but...
Tough without the Install disc, but some things to try...
Does it boot to Single User Mode, CMD+s keys at bootup, if so try...
    /sbin/fsck -fy
Repeat until it shows no errors fixed.
(Space between fsck AND -fy important).
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Tough without the Tiger Disk problems, but try fsck...
To use fsck, you must run it from the command line. Unlike using your mouse to open an application to do something, you'll need to type a text command at the prompt (#) to tell fsck what to do. The Terminal application (/Applications/Utilities) and single-user mode are two examples of command-line interfaces in which you can type such commands. To use fsck:
    1. Start up your computer in single-user mode to reach the command line. Hold CMD+s keys down at bootup.
Note: If necessary, perform a forced restart as described in the Emergency Troubleshooting Handbook that came with your computer. On desktop computers, you can do this by pressing the reset/interrupt button (if there is one) or holding down the power button for several seconds. On portable computers, simultaneously press the Command-Control-power keys. If your portable computer doesn't restart with this method, you may need to reset the Power Manager.
    2. At the command-line prompt, type /sbin/fsck -fy
(SPACE between fsck AND -fy important)
    3. Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found:

The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK
If fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
*** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***

Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 2 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).
    4. When fsck reports that your volume is OK, type reboot at the prompt and then press Return.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.

  • Extension Manager will not open and Adobe doesn't care

Just search on “extension manager will not open” in the Adobe Forums or Google and pages of hits come up going back to CS4. This is a serious problem that Adobe is simply ignoring.
I have Windows 7 Professional 64-bit with Design Premium CS5 installed. Nothing happens when I click on Manage Extensions from within any Adobe application, nothing happens when I click on Adobe Extension Manager CS5 on the start menu, and nothing happens when I double click on a .mxp file. No error messages – nothing.
So I had a free couple of hours and decided to call Adobe. Six hours later, after talking with Raj, Peenal, Tushar, Madhur, and Sandeep (get the picture?), after noting that none of them had ever even heard of the problem, after my call was dropped during one 30 minute wait, and after a complete uninstall and reinstall of the complete CS5, I have exactly the same problem I started with.
For my purposes, Design Premium CS5 is literally useless without extensions and Adobe has left me holding a $1500 boat anchor. Do you think anybody at Adobe cares?  I don’t.
Bottom line - DO NOT BUY Design Premium CS5 if you need extensions. They very possibly will not install and Adobe won't/can't help you.

Thanks to Carl Sun and Zhiqianq Liu, my problem with Extension Manager is resolved (the problem with Adobe support is not).
I followed Carl's Sun's instructions to the letter. I created a ExManLog.YES file and then manually ran Adobe Extension Manager CS5.exe via "Run as administrator" as Carl suggested and the Extension Manager ran for the first time.
In other words, either creating the ExManLog.YES file (unlikely) or manually running the .exe file as administrator (most certainly the solution) solved the problem.
Running, rerunning, rebooting and rerunning all work now – all without right clicking on Adobe Extension Manager CS5.exe before running Extension Manager. That is, it was apparently sufficient to right click on Adobe Extension Manager CS5.exe and then run the Extension Manager as administrator one time.
Now what's diabolical about this is that my user has full administrator privileges. Still, Extension Manager wasn’t actually running as administrator until I physically located the .exe file and manually ran it as administrator one time.
And what’s doubly diabolical is that all those guys at Adobe didn’t have a clue and Carl and Zhiqianq solved it right away.
    Thank you, thank you.
Now – Adobe – if you are reading this, five of you guys caused me six hours of untold grief (case # 182188172) when the solution was actually very simple. I won’t be forgetting that anytime soon and I hope others who read this will get the message that Adobe support is seriously dysfunctional.
