Startup of a newly installed Database

Hi,
1. If I use startup command with no further clause to specify pfile location, I got error like this:
ora-01078: failure in processing system parameters
LRM-00109: could not open parameter file '/opt/oracle/920/dbs/initMY_ORACLE.ora'
2. So then I followed the Administration Guide document to try specifying the pfile location. I found one in admin directory. So I entered:
startup pfile = /opt/oracle/admin/(DBNAME)/pfile/init(SIDNAME).ora.9202006221750
Then I see the instance was started, but followed by error:
ORA-01990: error opening password file ''/opt/oracle/920/dbs/orapw'
ORA-27037: unable to obtain file status
Linux error: 2: No such file or directory
Additional information: 3
In the dbs dirctory there is a file called orapw(SIDNAME), but I cannot use Text Editor to open the file.
3. I then tried setting pfile = /opt/oracle/920/dbs/spfile(SIDNAME).ora, but got this error:
LRM-00123: invalid character 0 found in the input file
ORA-01078 failure in processing system parameters
4. I also tried setting pfile = /opt/oracle/920/dbs/init.ora and saw the instance was started, but still with error:
ORA-00205: error in identifying controlfile, check alert log for more info. So I went to check them in /opt/oracle/admin/(DBNAME)/bdump. There are two files: alert_MY_ORACLE.log and alert_(SIDNAME).log. The first one has the current info listing my startup actions 5 minutes ago. The second one lists the installation actions 3 days ago. I think this is strange because was the default SID name or the DBName during installation and I did changed it to my own (SIDNAME). I assume the most recent actions should be in alert_(SIDNAME).log, not alert_MY_ORACLE.log file.
So, what is wrong? Or what did I do wrong?
In the item 2 above, is it possile to change oracle's default path for the password file from '/opt/oracle/920/dbs/orapw' to '/opt/oracle/920/dbs/orapw'(SIDNAME)'?
For item 4, does the fact that Oracle write to alert_MY_ORACLE.log instead of alert_(SIDNAME).log mean somewhere in the system got the DBNAME or SID name confused? If so, how can I fix it?
Sorry for being so long ...

a). where do I find other commands such as"$ORACLE_HOME/bin/dbca" to launch the GUI
interfaces?
In $ORACLE_HOME/bin directory.Sorry I wasn't specific or clear enough. I meant where I can find more info to learn similar commands to launch other GUI. In other words, if I can use $ORACLE_HOME/bin/dbca to open Configuration Assistant, what kind of documentation would list all such commands so that I can learn to launch other things such as Net Manager, etc. I know I will first read the Admin Guide doc you posted earlier.
b). what is $ORACLE_HOME variable defined? Is it alinux system variable. If so, is there another
example, such as calculator or any other programs?
Since I did set SID to a certain value other thanMY_ORACLE, it seems strange to me that the working
log file is still using MY_ORACLE in its file name.
The other log file that is named after the real SID
only has installation records.
Can you post me the exact steps that you used for
change of ORACLE_SID?When I installed the DB a couple of days ago, there was a screen that prompts me to enter Global Database Name and SID. Today, when I used your command $ORACLE_HOME/bin/dbca to launch DB Configuration Assistant, I saw that window again, except this time (if memory is accurate) SID is defaulte to be the same as the Global DB Name. I guess the first time a DB was created?
When I am writing this the new DB is still under creation.
such as calculator or any other programs? If you are using some Windowmanager or command line?
If windowmanager then look at menu (Gnome and KDE
window managers has start menu similar to windows
GUI).
Executables are usually installed in /bin /usr/bin
and /usr/local/binThanks and I am puting it in the notes.
I did set them different during installation.AFAIK, DBNAME could be set only during DB creation.
According to message that you got I belive you didn't
create the database.I thought a DB was created during installation, although not anyone that I design. What is AFAIK?
Yep, it's in my bookmarks. If you will read it, you will find all answer that
you looking for...Shame on me to be a slow reader, or an anxious trier.

  • Having trouble transferring large files from SSD startup disk to newly installed internal HDD

Have just installed an additional 2TB Samsung HDD in place of my optical drive on my late-2011 MacBook Pro.
    Specs:
    MacBook Pro 15inch late-2011
      Model Name: MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier: MacBookPro8,2
      Processor Name: Intel Core i7
      Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
      Number of Processors: 1
      Total Number of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
      L3 Cache: 6 MB
      Memory: 8 GB
      Boot ROM Version: MBP81.0047.B27
    Hard Drives:
      Startup = 120GB SSD
      New HDD = 2TB SATA Samsung M9T
    OS: Yosemite 10.10.1 (14B25)
    Issue:
Installed my new 2TB SATA drive and it appeared OK in Finder. I was able to navigate to it and create new folders and move small files into it (under 100MB maybe)
Really want to move my iPhoto library onto the 2TB disk to free up space for Apps on my SSD, but when I try to copy/move it over it only does the first few MB then freezes and appears to timeout as the new HDD disappears from Finder and ejects itself. I'm surprised that the eject stuff shows for an internal HDD but that's a side issue.
Have read about similar issues in other OS versions, especially around external HDD and have tried the following already:
    *  Looked at power management of the hard disks to stop them going to sleep
    *  Have told Spotlight not to index the new HDD to prevent the indexing task causing issues
    *  Both SSD and new HDD are formatted using MAC OS/X Extended (not FAT)
    *  Have tried fixing permissions on both disks as I believe there can be issues in Yosemite
I'm still having a problem  despite trying the above. Struggling!
    Any help much appreciated.

Open Disk Utility. By selecting one of the two entries for the HDD please determine how it is formatted and what partition map it is using. I suspect you did not partition or erase this drive before use. If that's true, then do this:
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
Now you can try your file transfers again. However, before you do I recommend you clone your SSD to the HDD so the latter could be used as your boot drive should it be needed. That will also create an Home folder on the HDD with the files you wish to move to it. You can then simply remove those files from the SSD to free up the space.
Clone Yosemite, Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new HDD. Source means the SSD startup volume.

  • Tried to configure APEX in newly installed database 11.1 but failed.

    Hello,
I have followed the steps in the Post Installation Tasks for APEX but I cannot access the Admin login page. I tried using the following URL: "http://localhost:8080/apex/apex_admin" but I get a "Page not Found" error.
For the HTTP Server I chose the "embedded PL/SQL gateway" and NOT the "Oracle HTTP Server and mod_plsql." In other words, I followed only the steps pertaining to configuring the embedded PL/SQL gateway.
Here is a summery of the steps that I took to configure APEX in database 11.1:
    1) Run apxconf.sql
    2) When prompted, set port to "8080" for the Oracle XML DB HTTP server.
    3) unlock the ANONYMOUS account
    4) Enabled the Oracle XML DB HTTP Server
    5) I skipped "Configuring Oracle HTTP Server in a New Installation."
    6) I skipped "Configuring Oracle HTTP Server Distributed with Oracle Database 11g."
    7) I skipped "Copying the Images Directory."
    8) I DID do "Enabling Network Services in Oracle Database 11g - Granting Connect Privileges" and successfully ran the script provided.
    9) I did not do "About Running Oracle Application Express in Other Languages."
    10) I did not do "Managing JOB_QUEUE_PROCESSES."
    11) I did not do "Obfuscating PlsqlDatabasePassword Parameter."
    12) I could not do this step "Logging In to Oracle Application Express."
When I had previously upgraded APEX 2.0 to 3.0 using the XE database, I distinctly remember "Copying the Images Directory" and other HTTP Server setup related steps.
Can I use the embeded PL/SQL Gateway on my laptop running windows XP or do I have to use Oracle HTTP Server and mod_plsql?
Please let me know what I should do.
    Thank you in advance.

Newly installed Premiere Elements 12 quits repeatedly at startup. Mac OS 10.9

    pastorok
Please refer to your other thread on Adobe contact information for my comments on that.
It might be a good idea to contact Adobe via its Adobe Chat to discuss "Downloading, Installing, and Setting Up". This does not prohibit you from continuing your Premiere Elements 12 issues here. The positive part about the Adobe contact is that, with the latest version, it may offer the opportunity for remote troubleshooting of your computer and the issue; whereas that is not possible in this user to user forum.
Lots of avenues to pursue...the usual drill...
    a. Problem antivirus and firewalls disabled?
    b. Running program from User Account with Administrative Privileges as well as Run As Administrator (from right click of desktop icon and Run As Administrator selection)?
    c. Latest version of QuickTime installed on computer with Premiere Elements 12?
    d. Have you ever gotten the program opened long enough to update it from 12 to 12.1?
    e. Video card/graphics card driver up to date according to web site of manufacturer of the card?
Please update us on your progress when you get the chance.
    Thank you.

  • How to move the photos from my boot drive to a newly installed hard drive?

    - regarding iPhoto's storage, etc.... Where is the iPhoto library located anyway? And - how to transfer it to the brand new hard drive?
I want to add a ned hard drive just to keep the media there, so I would like to transfer all the GBs worth of photos (the whole iPhoto library or - what folder, really?).
What do I need to do in order to accomplish this task?, and assuming that there is no problem moving all the photos (as I understand it would mean Originals, Modified & Data) - can I then just delete the original iPhoto Library (but from where?) somewhere on my boot drive?
Basically - I want to move all the photos from my boot drive to the newly installed hard drive, and after a successful move, I'd like to delete all the same photos from its original location (the boot drive).

One addition to Larry's steps: make sure the external drive is formatted OS X Extended (journaled) and have it set to ignore ownership as seen here:
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Service of newly created database won't start if XE service already started

    Hi all,
I install OracleXE 10g on WinXP SP1 and the default database (XE) is running well. Then I created a new database through TOAD but its window service won't start if XE service already started. If I shutdown the XE service than I can start the service of newly created database. This happens vice versa. When I forced to start the service of the new database with XE service already running windows told me to refer to service-specific error code 183.
But even if I'm able to start the service of the new database when I try to login using SYSTEM sometime it throws 'Oracle not available' and sometime 'shared memory realm does not exist'.

  • SQL Server 2012 express istallation failing to install "Database Engine Service" and "SQL Server Replication"

I ran SQL Server 2012 express setup as user with administrator privileges and still it's failing to install "Database Engine Service" and "SQL Server Replication".
Any and every ideas on how to resolve this issue is greatly appreciated.

Three weeks passed and I am yet to find a fix for the the failed installation of the database engine on sql server 2012 express installation. I have tried various work-around including uninstalling, deleting all the directory paths, and reinstallation. Still
not able to successfully install sql server 2012 express.

  • Oracle EF on SaveChanges doesn't return identity on newly installed compute

    Hi,
I'm having a weird problem ... I'm using EF with my C# project . It's all working on my developer
computer and my laptop computer... but when I tried to run the app on another newly installed computer (virtual server), the identity is not returned any more ...
I've checked that EntityKey has Identity in designer and in the xml code of the model .... so everything looks ok ....
And when I run it on my machine I get back ID as expected ..... but on new machine I get 0 instead of correct ID number ...
SO it all looks like there is something other then my code influencing the behavior of the model ...
I've installed the latest ODAC and the same version on all developer machines and the same version but without VS support on new machine.... the only difference I can see is in Oracle 11g version.
Anyone had any similar problems ? Any hints where to look ?
    Thanks,
    Kris

    Hi,
Thank you for your suggestions .... as I said ... it was working on my two computers just fine ...
I've found the problem.... ok I still can't explain why did it work on my computers and not on customer's.... and if this is really the solution or not , but it's working now :)
    Here it is ....
When I first created a new entity model so edmx file .... I didn't change the default setting cause I've always updated my edmx file with an update from database ...
So what needed to be changed is two property field under 'database script generation' cause they were set to MS SQL by default ...
    So by changing :
    - Database Generation Workflow property - > Generate Oracle via T4(TPT).xaml
    - DDL Generation Template - > SSDLtoOracle.tt
Why is property for 'database script generation' infecting identity stuff I don't know, but maybe someone else does. Bottom line, it's working :)
    Thank you,
    Kris

  • I have changed computers and installed iTunes on my new computer. I want to sync my iphone now but the "sync" program indicates that it will remove all data on my phone and replace it with the newly installed itunes that does not have my information.

I have a new computer and have installed iTunes on it.
Now I want to sync my iphone but the new itunes on the new computer wants to remove everything on my niphone and replace it with what's on the newly installed itunes data but it does not have my data.
How can I sync the new itunes with my iphone and not have my phone data wiped out?
    Thanks,

There is no way to stop iTunes from doing exactly what it is designed to do.
The iPhone is designed to sync with one and only one computer.
If you have moved/copied your iTunes library from your old computer to your new one, then iTunes wiping your device is no problem.  You would simply sync and iTunes will put all the content back.

  • Firefox crashes for unknown reason lately, so I removed it and reinstalled it. How can I put my Favorites (bookmarks) back into the newly installed FireFox???

Firefox crashes a few times when I was on Facebook and with email, also watching dramas online. Most of the time due to Adobe Flash and I did submit crash report. Later it crashes for unknown reason while I have email and Facebook on different tabs -- when I was on the tab of email, it looks system hang and not responding. This happened to my laptop that uses Windows Vista as I noticed. I don't remember it ever happens to my desktop that uses Windows XP.
It's pretty annoying of such known crash, but before removing Firefox, I did try to update all add-ons or plugins and it looks like doesn't work out. After updating for couple times and it still crashed like that, I removed Firefox and reinstall it.
'''Now I want to know how to put the shortcuts from my Favorite folder into the newly installed FireFox's bookmarks.''' I didn't backup the bookmarks by using Firefox. I even went to Firefox help for instructions, but it only mentions how to merge/input the bookmarks from other browsers. Please note the version I've removed and inrestalled is the same -- 3.6.13.

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the sessionstore.js file and possible sessionstore-##.js files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).
You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

  • How do I get A newly installed Scanner to show up in " IMPORT "

How do I get a newly installed Cannonscan8800F Scanner to show up in " IMPORT "

What installing the twain plug-in, you mean? Go to your applications folder. Find the Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 folder. Look in there for a folder called support files, then for a folder called optional plugins. In the Optional Plugins folder, there should be a folder called ImportModules. Just drag that from the Optional Plugins folder to the regular Plugins folder.
This will be infinitely easier to do if you put your applications folder window into list view, not the default icon view. To do that, click this button at the top of the window:

  • How to create a local SLD on a newly installed PI 7.3 system.

    Hello
I wander how to create a local SLD on a newly installed PI 7.3 system.
When installing I choosed "register in existing central SLD"(other option was "no SLD destination")
On next screen I have choosen SLD HTTP host as the host I was currently installing PI7.3
For SLD HTTP  port I have used 50000 as the instance was (the default) "00"
For SLD Data Supplier User I have choosen "SLDDSUSER"
I was warned then that "The SLD Server is not reachable. Choose "Cancell" to modify managing  configuration or "OK" to continue. If you choose to continue you will have to execute the smdsetup script later on."
    I opted "OK".
if I understand I have to execute smdsetup script in order to create a local SLD
    Has anyone experience with it
    thank you in advace
    Jan

    Hi Jan,
You first need to run the wizard to setup the SLD locally.
To do this, go to the NetWeaver Administrator -> Configuration -> Scenarios -> Configuration Wizard -> Funtional Wizard Configuration UI
There tick System Landscape Directory and select "Enable Automatically".
After executing this, your SLD will be ready for use.
The SMD has nothing to do with the SLD, it's just the next step in the installation process.
    Kind regards,
    Mark
