Startup problems. Grey screen. Disk0s2 i/o error

Hi everyone!
I have a Macbook Pro from late 2011. Some time ago I had some startup issues. The computer kept frozen in the gray screen. I tried starting in single user mode, and running fsck and it said disk0s2 i/o error. Even with the Disk utility in the recovery HD, couldn't solve the problem.
Then I changed the Hard drive. Now I had the new hard drive for less than 1 month, and I have exactlly the same problem!! Is it possible that my laptop is burning all the Hard drives I put in it?? Is very strange that two different hard drives, diferent brands, have exactlly the same fail. And one new hard drive with just one month use!
Anyone can help me?

am i going to be able to get it back with an installation disk?
You won’t know unless you try. Booting up from the Installer DVD, launch Disk Utility, select your hard disk, and click Verify Disk.
If there are any errors, click Repair Disk. You may need to repeat it until Disk Utility reports there are no problems.
If, however, there are still problems with your disk, you may need something like DiskWarrior, which is a much more powerful tool.

  • Encore CS6 Flash Export problem, Grey screens

    Hi everyone,
I am having a problem with my encore CS6 flash exports, they are not behaving as expected online (seems to be like a loading issue).
I've tried exporting FLV and F4V and the problem is the same. The same project exported from CS5.5 does not produce this undesirable
problem. It may be important to say that the project was started in CS5.5.
I have a button that links to another menu, and I am using videos as 'transitions'. The videos are dynamic after effects compositions.
When it's online, and you press the button it fills the canvas with a  'grey screen' before starting the video transition. This totally breaks
the experience and feels like an authoring error. It would be important to note, that this screens only appear the first time you see the flash.
Somehow the next time you press it doesnt show it.
I would happily go back to CS5.5 but I started using auto-activate buttons that are only available on CS6 flash exports.
Any ideas what has changed between this versions flash exports?
    Any help would be appreciated..
    Thanks in advance,
    Cris

    Encore CS6 6.0.2.004, IE9, Win7
Simple project, DVD NTSC, One menu with one button. One timeline. Menu first play, button linked to timeline.
Output flash with flv (and again with f4v - same results), No template, keep with flash swf rather than streaming.
Open index.html locally, must manually enable active content. Menu opens, movie plays. No grey screen.
Copy entire folder to USB, same result; USB plays on a different PC also.
Upload to web site; same result.
Am I doing soething differently from either of you? Are you using templates?
Factors related to flash security (for local and probably USB playback) can be problems. Various server settings can be problems for on line.

Any ideas on what I can try?

  • Macbook wont show any startup disk, grey screen

Hey there! Here is what I did, and what I get.(Sorry for my bad English) I wanted to have 3 partitions for my macbook, one for msc osx, one for windows, and one for shared data. I've started with bootcamp. I've created partition, then canceled installation of windows 8. then I've added third partition from disk utility, then I've restarted computer, started installation of windows 8. I've noticed that third partition is showing as unlocated memory,(but it's shown in mac os x) during installation of windows 8. After finishing installation of win 8, I've gone through disk managment from control panel, and created local disk from that third unlocated memory, then from my computer I saw that my third partition isnt accessable.. then I've removed it from disk managment, so its again unlocated memory. Then I've restarted computer, but computer didnt started anumore.. it's shows grey screen, then after about  15 seconds, it's showing black screen, then trying to start windows 8, then it's shows blue screen with icon, then restart again, and again.. on start when I'm pressing option key, nothing happens, also nothing happens when I'm pressing option + s. I've tried to start recovery mode, by option + r. that one worked, in disc recovery left part I can see my 3 partitions.. but I cant do nothing with them, I've tried to erase third partition, but I got error, about partition map.. I've tried to use reinstall os x, but when I need to select partition to install, there is no any partition, also when I'm trying to select startup disk, it didnt show anything,( mac os x, windows..). Any idea what to do? It's my first time using mac, and soooo disapointed.. any help? Thanks in advance.

    Have you tried Internet recovery?
Hold the command and option and r keys down on a wired or built in keyboard. Boot the machine and you will see a globe spinning as IR loads.
Next select Disk Utility and the disk0. Click Erase and if there is a slider, move it one or two spots to the right for a 0-3x secure erase and mapping off of bad/damaged sectors on the boot hard drive (SSD no need).
Once finished, check Partition that Option:GUID and Format is OS X Extended Journaled and the name is MacintoshHD or else make it so and click Apply.
Quit and install the OS X version that is provided with Internet Recovery, it depends upon what originally came on the machine.
(taken from advice of ds store. Thanks)
You can then migrate your data back from your backup.

  • Startup hang: grey screen, spinning wheel, then automatic reset to same

Brand new imac, installed 10.5, updated to 10.5.1, ported over a few dozen applications, utilities and preferences, plus 20,000 files from G4 running 10.3.1, using the "migration assistant."
Took the obviously useless/ redundant apps and utilities out...plus some light, but possibly ill-advised pruning of what seemed like way outdated library items
Killed the automatically generated new user in favor of the migration-assistant ported over and updated G4 identity...(or was this where I went wrong?)
did some more house cleaning, including installing new versions of several pieces of software, including sheepshaver, and (last thing done) parallels with windows XP.
    Everything working hunky dory...woo hoo, fast new computer ready for biz mon...but no;
After shutdown, it won't start up; hangs on grey screen with spinning clock, then resets...
Restarts fine from install disk, did disk utility/repair disk, no problems found, same issue on startup
    My plan is to
    1) repair permissions, try starting up
    2) re-install system, with old system archieved, try starting up again
    Any insights most welcome...

    UPDATE:
First, forgot to mention that I'd globally changed permissions to read/write all around on the whole drive.
Second, I'll be darned if the Disk Utility/ Repair Permissions thing didn't unhang it...so much for the doubters I saw on some other forum post who said this is mere voodoo...
After a few hours of permissions repair, on a successful restart, it identified a bunch of startup item issues, which I fixed or deleted, and now all but parallels works. We'll see what happens after I reinstall parallels...

  • Booting problem (grey screen with spinning wheel) PLEASE HELP!!

I have and ibook G4, i shut it down the other day and whent to school, when i got home, i tried booting it up, but its just goes to the grey screen with the apple logo and the spinning wheel, and doesnt go any further. i can hear the computer thinking, it that helps at all, but the weel just keeps spinning and it never gets to the login screen. Whats the problem? What can i do to fix it? somebody please help!!!

    Hi,
Try starting in Safe Mode by holding the shift key as you start. Release it when you see the logo and spinning progress indicator. If successful restart normally.
If that doesn't work please post the version of OS X you are using (Panther,Tiger,Leopard) for more trouble shooting suggestions.

  • MacBook Pro freezes at startup on grey screen with apple and spinner

I was on Firefox and suddenly the screen froze. 10-15 minutes later i still couldn't do anything on it so i had to force power my laptop off by holding down the power button. Normally when I have this sort of issue, this will solve it. But when I try to turn my laptop back on it gets to the grey screen with the apple logo and little spinner thing and just stays on that screen forever. I'm not really sure what to do now. A couple articles suggested "reseting the PRAM" and I tried that but it didn't help. If you have any suggestions if really appreciate it. And I'm not really sure if i have everything backed up and I really don't want to lose all my pictures so if you could keep that in mind if you have any ideas I'd appreciate it. thanks!

Could be problems with the boot drive, corrupted system and or a incompatible/old outdated third party kerenel extension file..
Run through this list of fixes, it's systematically designed to narrown down your issue.

  • MacBook Pro (early 08) startup problem - gray screen!

    Hi there,
Im new here on this forums so excuse me if solution of this problem is somewhere here, bud I didn't find it. So what going on...
My MBP (early 08) randomly froze about three time last week. Each time after reset was every think okay. But this time it froze and after that I cant startup it. After pressing power button computer seem to start up HDD, optical drive etc., but screen remains black after about 30 sec appears gray screen but without Apple logo. And thats it, this is all I get no starup sound nothing.
A tried to reset PRAM, EFI, SMC but nothing happened. I also put back original RAM modules but still nothing.
Do you guys have any idea how to solve it? Unfortunately Im from Europe (Czech Rep.) so we do not have hare any retail store or something like Genius bar.
I hope this is just silly motherboard problem, 'cause I do not want do visit authorized repair center here. Thanks so much for your advice.

If it is a "silly motherboard problem" you'll be visiting the repair center. Boot from your OS installer disk, select your language and from the menu select Disk Utilities. Run Repair Disk. Post back with the results.

  • Startup problem, home screen won't load after password is typed in

    i have a MacBook
after the password is typed in the light on the keyboard doesnt shine anymore and It doesn't load
is there a problem with the charger or my laptop

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203176I would not say it's a.charger problem. Are you saying that after logging in the screen goes black? First try a pram reset. Command/Option/P/R  keys for three chimes at startup. Then try a safe boot by holding down the shift key at startup. This will not load all extensions, but you can access your files and apps and run safari. Do you have The install dvd as you show snow leopard as your operating system. You can also boot to that and run disk utilities to check and repair the drive and permissions. If no dvd you will have to use single user mode to run a check and repair.https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

  • G5 freezes at startup, get grey screen with logo, but no spinning gear

As subject says, I get the Grey Startup screen with aple logo, but no spining gear.
do i need a new install of OS X? Or ???

Hi wampaskitty, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
If that doesn't work, Boot off your original G5 Install Disk while holding down Option/alt key to select AHT, then run the extended Apple Hardware Test.

  • Weird startup problems - white screen - USB/Firewire?

Not even sure where to start on this one...
I've got an Intel Dual 2.0ghz 20" Imac. 3 gb of RAM. I have AppleCare, but not sure this isn't peripheral related, so don't want to start down that path just yet.
I've got two Western Digital MyBook drives: a 250gb connected through the firewire 400 port, and a 500gb drive connected to the 800 port. An Eyetv 200 DVR is connected between the 250gb drive and the computer. Multiple USB devices (Treo 680, CanoScan LiDE500f, Epson Stylus Photo R220, Ipod) through an externally powered Belkin 7 port hub. Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.
About once out of every 10 boots, the machine only comes to a white screen. I have discovered that I have to disconnect all cables from the back of the machine to continue the booting process. Sometimes the boot continues when the firewire plugs are removed, sometimes with the USB. I also have the issue, documented elsewhere, with the WD drives intermittently unmounting.
I've had other, possibly related, issues with Missing Sync hanging (whether syncing with the Treo or not). Curiously, when this problem manifests, Console also hangs in the same manner. Not sure what clears the problem, but after a few reboots, logouts, and resetting the power manager, it generally goes away.
My hunch is that the USB/Firewire buses are underpowered or overstressed. The problems have so far resisted my trying to narrow them down further.
Another oddity: After problems booting, the display brightness is often reset to its lowest (dimmest) setting.
The most frustrating part of all this is that I use my EyeTV device to record TV programs when I'm away. Obviously, if the machine doesn't boot consistently, I can't depend on this.
    Anyone have any better hunches?
    thanks!

Perhaps I'm on the path to finding the cause of this problem. I took your advice, and using a Firewire 400 cable, connected the 500gb drive in line with the other Firewire devices. After rebooting, I immediately had the same interrupted startup process.
I noticed when connecting the 500gb drive, that it also has a USB port. I have now taken this drive out of the Firewire chain and connected it via USB. I haven't tested very long, but so far so good. I'm beginning to think that the Firewire bus on my 500gb WD drive is bad. I already knew that the 800 port didn't work. Lets hope the USB works. This is solely a backup drive, so USB is fine (unless I need to boot off a backup, in which case I know that the FW 400 will work in a pinch). I'll keep you updated.
