Stealth Printer

A friend has asked me to 'assist' with his Power PC G4. Running 10.3.9 and OS 9.2.2 Classic ver 1.8.3 build 168.9. I have changed to a 'newer' Canon Mp 530 printer via USB. All the OS X apps print. But he is still running MS Office 98 ( I know, I know) and Quickbooks under Classic. Neither of these see the printer.
The chooser does not list it in order to select it. The system profiler reports: "USB 0 No devices Found"
How do I 'make' the classic apps see this USB printer?
Thanks in advance.
Chuck

There are at least tens of thousand of those articles. Browsing without some focus is out of the question.
The main search is off the page accessed by the large "Support" tab that appears on the top right throughout most of the Apple site. Type important words or phrases into the search box at the top and anywhere from ten to thousands of articles, manuals, download documents, popular discussion threads, and other items will appear in a list below, and on the pages that follow. Really old stuff requires the "Include Archive" button as well.
"Classic" is still supported in 10.4. If you have OS 9 on the same Volume, you can just Install the purchased, pressed, black DVD (the five-CD set is rare and expensive) with a large silver-white X. Not "Upgrade" or "CPU Drop in" or "Not for Sale" or other goofy special discs. Not gray discs unless they are for EXACTLY your Mac.
If you have broadband access, then do the Software Updates. You do not need to remove OS 9 until you find you need its space (typically under 1.5GB) more than you need its capabilities. No jump into the abyss without a net is required.
10.4 has are a whole raft of software updates for Java, and once those are installed, you can move up to Safari 3. If you choose, you can download Safari 4 which is said to be faster.
What is not supported in 10.4 is File Sharing using only AppleTalk protocol. But unless you have an old Beige Mac that cannot run OS 9 ever, this is of no consequence, as it has File Sharing using standard IP protocol and SMB/CIFS Windows protocols.

  • Open port issues with Direct Print functionality

Hi, I have been fighting with HP call support about the Photosmart 7525 printer.
Originally I setup and had performed all the functions to enable both web support and WIFI.
Within an hour the printer would not respond to wireless communication, though it had its wireless indecator showing it was connected.
I was told by HP support that the issue will be resolved in March, as there will be a firmware update to fix the issue.
Now that I had the printer install the new firmware I still get the issue.
Though I found through some sniffing, that there are a number of ports enabled and open that are over and beyond print requirements.
Funny thing I can send my printer into instant lockup with all lights flashing with a simple UDP ping sniff. I would think I can do this with other new HP printers using Eprint functions. I will find HP web based printers that are open for public printing and test my theory that HP Eprinters are open to hacking and denyal of service attempts.  My Hp print app on andriod list three in my area, and one is at my local Walmart. This would be cool to find this, as I am usually not the first to point such matters out.
I assume some are for Apple devices to print.
    Here is my sniffing report:

OK now I am able to run a full scan on TCP ports without causing a lock up of the printer.
I found that having the printer connect to a router that has been setup to use channel 5, 6 or 7 will cause port scanning issues with the printer.
It is obvious that there are 18 ports that are seen as open, whether they are used or not. Two of which are active but have no service connected to them. Some are just dead like port 25, but over half are active enough to recieve data and lock network connectivity within the printer.
As the firmware states some other laser jets may be affected depending on how the configuration can be set.
I moved my routers channel to channel 1 as it is the only other option I have in a highly congested location. It is not as good as channel 6, but the printer seems to have channel 6 locked in for direct printing.
Here is the latest full scan with UDP enabled, it is the furthest and most complete scan I am able to complete, with UDP ports enabled. The TCP port scan has a bit more and I have placed a simple list below the information given here:

  • HP printer does not show up as part of the neighborhood in printer utility

Hi Everybody -- I am trying to connect to a shared HP printer connected on my XP machine. It works fine when trying to connect to it from other pc's, however, when ever i try to connect to it from my MAC, the pc name and printer does not show up as part of the neighborhood in the printer setup utility (which is weird).
I do have the drivers installed for that particular printer and it works fine with USB connection (HP6110). I know this is not a firewall issue becuase I tried connecting to the printer while disabling the firewall.
Appreciate any help on this matter.

Look over the printer sharing articles on iFelix Tech Notes.
In addition, check the Mac's System Preferences> Sharing> Firewall tab> Advanced button and uncheck 'block unwanted UDP traffic' and "enable stealth mode". On the WinXP computer, go to Control Panels> Administrative Tools> Services and set 'Computer Browser' to manual from automatic.

  • Ipfw: Stealth Mode connection attempt to UDP...

    Hi all,
I recently encountered internet slow down at home. I connect to internet using a wireless router, which has been used for almost a year without any problem. The router has WEP setup and MAC address filter enabled.
When I open the firewall log, I found that my router is keep using different ports (from 6355 down to 2063), trying to connect the port 137 of my Mac Mini. I have checked that port 137 is related to NetBIOS. The following is extracted from the firewall log (with my host name masked).

The IP address of my router is 192.168.2.1 and my Mac Mini is 192.168.2.2. I have checked from the router administrative page and can't find any other machine in my wireless network. I have no idea what's wrong with my router. Any idea please? Thanks for any advice in advance.

    Hi Rick,
    Thanks also for your response.
Do you have a network printer? (make, model, please)
Any other network devices on this LAN (Xbox, printer,
    PC :o
I don't have a network printer. The little network only consists of the router and the Mac for the time being.
Do you have uPNP enabled on your router?
What make/model of router? (there may be something
    common to this mfr)
No, the uPNP is never enabled. My router is Belkin Wireless G Router (F5D7230-4), which is supposed quite Mac-friendly in the market...
You say you still get the logging, even when the DSL
    modem is disconnected. Weird.
    Yes, it is weird.
StealthMode has been known to cause more paranoia in
some users. This 137 port scanning might be coming
from a printer or other network device on the inside
of your little network...with stealth disabled,
things would just work the way they're supposed to --
quietly. Your mac is probably secure. Your router is
probably secure (especially if you changed the admin
password when you set it up. If you've been using the
default admin password, then shame on you <wink>
I have enabled Stealth mode in my Mac. Sorry to let you down (^^V) that I am not using the default password before the discovery of the port probing mentioned and have changed to another one after reset and firmware upgrade as advised by the other poster.
    Am I off-base here, fellows?
Nope, you're appreciated for any idea trying to help.
    TC
(P.S. I found that the "Helpful" is used up. Sorry that I can't give you one...)

  • Wireless printer problem w new canon driver

I have a Canon Pixma MP980 connected that I access through wireless connections fro two computers. It worked fine until the recent Canon driver update. Now every time I try to print a dialogue box pops up asking if I want to allow incoming connections. It goes away after a few seconds. If I do not move fast and click yes, printing fails because communications between the printer and driver are cut off - at least coming back from the printer. If I do click yes, then it works fine.
I have seen the "allow incoming connections" dialogue when using new programs for the first time, but once I click yes or no, it does not ask again and works appropriately. With the Canon diver, I am asked every time I try to print.
In the security>firewall  preferences printer sharing and all Canon entries are set to allow incoming connections.
The computer that does not have the "updated" driver continues to work fine.
Is there a cure or a way to undo the driver update that Software Update just installed? Reinstalling the driver that came with the printer is a real pain that I would like to avoid.

    Canon Pixma MX868 Scanning Issues
Interesting, I am using Canon MX868 printer with Driver 10.67.1.0 (latest driver from canon for OSX 10.8.2) and have the same problem.  When I initially installed software all worked fine but when I activated the firewall and removed the “Canon IJ Network Scanner” from startup (login) services I started getting the error message
I am not convinced that removing exceptions from firewall will make problem go away (as they are needed for firewall to work and will be added back in by default next time you allow permission). Nb Pahu was not using apple firewall
Anyway here is what I did to cause and then resolve the problem
I updated the driver and software to use Canon MR Navigator Ex 2.1 scanning software.  I prefer the canon software as I can scan from printer by pressing buttons with more advanced scanning PDF JPG features (than basic bonjour scaner which creates big files and is clunky to use).
After reviewing above, I removed exceptions from firewall (see below).  However every time I restarted the computer or restarted the Canon MR Navigator Ex 2.1 scanning software I still got the "allow incoming connections" window and scanner would not work until I allowed this.
Here are the changes I made to Firewall Settings (the firewall options is under System Preferences / Security & Privacy you will need to press unlock button and use admin password to show firewall options):
    -   block all incoming connections - not ticked
    -  automatically allow signed software to receive incoming connections (ticked)
    - enable stealth mode - unchecked
    - I kept then removed all canon utilitiy permissions in firewall (nb if you remove but then "allow incoming connection" the exception  will reappear in the firewall exceptions), also if you remove other apps exception permission eg iphoto you will need to add permission back in)
After I had done above and restarted a few times to test (unsuccessfully) I tried adding the Canon IJ Network Scanner app back into the login items (login items under system preferences/ User & Groups). When I restarted it asked for permission once more and from then on the Canon IJ Network Scanner loaded and allowed full scanning from computer and from printer buttons
To add the Canon IJ Network Scanner app to login items, press “+” button then browse to the following file under the Main Library of  Mac HD:   /Library/Printers/Canon/IJScanner/Utilities.  Nb the main library has  full range of apps where as the User Library (located under your User profile /Users/[USERNAME]/Library) does not have the “Canon IJ Network Scanner app” (this confused me for a while)
Another way to resolve the problem was to turn the firewall off (but I prefer it on)
After several restarts with Canon IJ Network Scanner running in login items with out problem, I rechecked enable stealth mode and selected “allow applications downloaded from” “,mac store and identified developers” (under General Tab). The scanner and network tool still worked fine with no error messages

  • Stealth mode logs in ipfw.log

Every so often I get logs like this in my /var/log/ipfw.log:
Jan 20 08:41:33 PowerBook ipfw: Stealth Mode connection attempt to TCP 10.0.1.x:53725 from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:80
These log entries do not show an ipfw rule number. So how can I tell which rule from ipfw is causing them to be logged? Are they being logged before matching any of the rules you see on the command sudo ipfw show?

    Hi Rick,
    Thanks also for your response.

  • Canon MG6220 Printer and it has suddenly lost wifi connection.

The printer can find my wireless connection but my computer can't find the printer.  I have tried both the Wireless process and the USB process with no luck. When I have printed out my Network configuration page and went thru the USB process and it still wouldn't find the printer on my network and I was given the manual connection I noted that the IP address was 192.168.1.66 but the IP address on my wireless router is 192.168.1.254?  Is this causing a problem.  I have been printing fine for the last 4 years since I bought the printer and it just so happens I had to buy a new modem and I'm wondering if it is something to do with the new set-up.  Would love some help as I am screaming!!

I was having a similar problem to many of you. Under Windows 7, no issues with printing or scanning. Just upgraded to Windows 10 and whilst I was able to scan (MG7550) was unable to print but could see printer. Found that the issue wasn't with the printer software or drivers, but with my firewall. In my case it's Bitdefender. The solution was/isOpen BitdefenderGo to FirewallGo to Adapters - make sure adapter has the Network type set to Trusted, Stealth mode set to Off, Generic set to On Can't talk about other AV products, but perhaps have a look at what's happening with the firewall side. Anyways, hope this helps some of you.

  • Trying to connect to a printer through a windows shared printer

I have two printers connected to a Windows machine. On that machine I have shared both printers. A Brother and a color HP 3600N. When i go into print setting and try to set them up I can see both.
I connected to the Brother Printer and it is working fine.
I tried to connect to the HP 3600N but the print driver was not available for that machine. I went to HPs web site and downloaded the driver and did the install. I rebooted and tried again. Still the HP 3600N driver was not showing up.
I tried using two other print drivers the 3500 and the 3700. With both I was able to "connect" to the printer, but the printer only printed garbage.
In order to make sure the printer was working with the Mac. I disconnected it from the PC and directly connected it to the Mac. It found it immediately and the 3600N driver appeared...the printer worked fine.
I then disconnected it from the mac and reconnected it to the PC...rebooted etc.
Then i tried to find the printer again. Once again that print driver 3600n was not available.
How can I over come this. I need to have both printers connecting to the PC for now
    Thanks
    Mark

Look at the printer sharing instructions on the invaluable iFelix Tech Notes site.
If problems persist, check System Preferences -> Sharing -> Firewall -> Advanced and if necessary clear/uncheck the options to block UDP traffic and enable stealth mode; as long as you're behind a NAT router, those options aren't essential. Windows does seem to put out a slew of UDP traffic, and I've found that blocking UDP/enabling stealth mode block my home eMac from seeing the Windows machine to which a shared HP printer is connected.

  • Cannot Access print-manager Interface In KDE

    Hello all,
First of all, I have print manager installed. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but the problem still persists. The problem is that no matter what I do, there is no option in the System Settings app on KDE to manage printers. I realise that I can just use the CUPS interface, but that leaves a lot to be desired for me.
I have spent hours scouring the web for any information on this, and it appears that the most common reason for this problem is that people don't have print-manager installed in the first place. That is definitely not the reason I'm having the problem, however.

  • Questions on Print Quote report

    Hi,
I'm fairly new to Oracle Quoting and trying to get familiar with it. I have a few questions and would appreciate if anyone answers them
    1) We have a requirement to customize the Print Quote report. I searched these forums and found that this report can be defined either as a XML Publisher report or an Oracle Reports report depending on a profile option. Can you please let me know what the name of the profile option is?
    2) When I select the 'Print Quote' option from the Actions drop down in the quoting page and click Submit I get the report printed and see the following URL in my browser.
    http://<host>:<port>/dev60cgi/rwcgi60?PROJ03_APPS+report=/proj3/app/appltop/aso/11.5.0/reports/US/ASOPQTEL.rdf+DESTYPE=CACHE+P_TCK_ID=23731428+P_EXECUTABLE=N+P_SHOW_CHARGES=N+P_SHOW_CATG_TOT=N+P_SHOW_PRICE_ADJ=Y+P_SESSION_ID=c-RAuP8LOvdnv30grRzKqUQs:S+P_SHOW_HDR_ATTACH=N+P_SHOW_LINE_ATTACH=N+P_SHOW_HDR_SALESUPP=N+P_SHOW_LN_SALESUPP=N+TOLERANCE=0+DESFORMAT=RTF+DESNAME=Quote.rtf
Does it mean that the profile in our case is set to call the rdf since it has reference to ASOPQTEL.rdf in the above url?
    3) When you click on submit button do we have something like this in the jsp code: On click call ASOPQTEL.rdf. Is the report called using a concurrent program? I want to know how the report is getting invoked?
    4) If we want to customize the jsp pages can you please let me know the steps involved in making the customizations and testing them.
    Thanks and Appreciate your patience

No, there is no conc program getting called, you can directly call a report in a browser window, Oracle reports server will execute the report and send the HTTP response to the browser.4) If we want to customize the jsp pages can you please let me know the steps involved in making the customizations and testing them.
This is detailed in many threads. Thanks

  • Printing list view in ical

I use mail and ical for everything now. Everything is fine except When I want to print the "list view" which shows my “to dos”. It displays the URL the “do to” is attached to in mail. I use notes often in mail and enter to dos in the notes so they will have URL links. The link only becomes a nuisance when I want to print, otherwise it’s very useful.
Why would the long URL paths display when in print view???!!!!! It doesn’t make any sense.
Is there anything I can do?
    Thank you

    ecernek,
There is no event list option on iCal like the one on the iPhone.
That number means that you have an event invitation. Use iCal>View>Show Notifications to choose what to do with the notification.
