[Steam] Source games freeze up X.

Hello,
I have a problem, where source games seem to crash in a random period. Sometimes they crash in 5 minutes, sometimes they crash in 20 minutes, sometimes they won't crash.
Any source game has this problem. During the crash, X completely stops working. Switching to a TTY doesn't work, any SYSRQ combinations, etc.
Things I have tried to do:
* Disable Steam In-Game Overlay,
* Run Steam without runtime,
* Try three different desktop environments,
* Use prerelease of source games,
* Downgrade Catalyst drivers,
* Dmesg, Journalctl, Xorg log, they show no errors.
* SSH works during the freeze.
* Added more swap space to see if it's a memory leak.
* Compositing off.
* Play in Windowed mode.
Steam yields no backtraces during the crash, total freeze.
Neither of these things worked. I reported this in the Valve bugtracker, but the problem doesn't seem to occur in Mint, which I have installed alongside Arch today. So I am thinking it would be more approriate to post it in here.

I had the same (or at least a similar) problem with Catalyst beta versions on my HD 7870 Ghz. I don't remember trying SSH, but otherwise your problem is what I remember. Immediately before the crash, TF2 would start to stutter, and eventually the system would be locked up.
I fixed the problem by downgrading to the stable version of Catalyst, which was, at the time, 13.4. I don't have any problem with the current stable version, 13.12, either. What Catalyst versions have you tried/downgraded to?
You can also try asking in The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill if downgrading to the [catalyst-stable] repo doesn't help.

    My system is 64bit Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3210M CPU @ 2.50GHz with Nvidia G635M  on my lapton. There are a lot of post in Internet saying that Left for dead 2 in Linux has more fps than in windows. But for me on Windows everything is smooth, but on Linux game freeze for a second sometimes, game video settings is the same on both systems.

    Hello!
    My system is 64bit Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3210M CPU @ 2.50GHz with Nvidia G635M  on my lapton. There are a lot of post in Internet saying that Left for dead 2 in Linux has more fps than in windows. But for me on Windows everything is smooth, but on Linux game freeze for a second sometimes, game video settings is the same on both systems.

  • Cannot run Source games under Wine

    Hello, I remember when I used ubuntu I had the ability to run Source games (although they looked... weird, I couldn't place my finger on it) under wine, however I have yet to get any source games to run. When I try to run them the text comes out all messed up, and the textures are screwed up beyond belief.

    I use FGLRX (the beta version with Xorg 1.9), Gnome, Compiz-Fusion (doesn't work under metacity ether), and Arch Linux AMD64.

    i have not tried team fortress, in a few days when the month rolls over and i get my broadband speed back i can try installing it. I have only minor problems running left4dead and halflife2 under the latest wine. but i cannot get the games to run if i install playonlinux. maybe theres something special you got to do to get playonlinux to work but i prefer to not use it.

    if your using 64 bit arch then shouldnt wine be using c:\Program Files(x86)\

  • Program and source monitors freeze go black

    My program and source monitors freeze, then go black and eventually white but audio keeps playing. My reference monitor keeps updating like it can see the video.
    I'm useing PP CC. Updated my video driver, but it still happens.
    No problems with any other video playing app.
    This is what happened when I tried to re-size the monitor.
    Update: monitors work with CUDA off. GTX 460 1gb

    As a footnote, I opened the project on my laptop (newer CPU and video card) in PP CC and it plays perfectly. My laptop has 3GB video RAM and the desktop has only 1GB. I wonder if that could be the problem. There were some big stills, maybe CC needs more video RAM?

  • Program and Source Window Freezing :/

    Have been opening up a large project in Premiere for the first time in a around a month and am having major problems with the program and source windows freezing. I don't know what's happening and am in major need of help as deadlines are incoming. I REALLY want to speak directly to an Adobe representative but this website is making that more difficult than it needs to be. Has anyone been having similar issues on feature length projects within Premiere like this and are willing to help?   • All 3d games freezes after few seconds of playing

    Bah, the day is hot but is getting hotter inside my head cause of problems with the "pc from hell".
    Ok this is the deal. My pc has been working fine for over a year then suddenly out of nowhere all my 3d games stopped working. I start the game and when the "3d card kicks" inn the game freezes and the pc reboots. 
    One question before I start : I’ve installed a “old” ide disk and I have read  that it can be a problem on Nforce4 boards (sata) . But I’ve tried without the ide disk also.
    To save you wasting the time writing good solutions which I already have tried i will summate what i have tried so far :
    Partition and formatted the boot disk
    Reinstalled windows xp sp 2
    Installed newest nvidia drivers

    Hi:
    What that means is there is some process running in the background.
    Check your resource monitor to see what is happening when you are seeing this.
    You can also hit the cntrl + alt + del keys to launch the task manager and look at the processes tab to see what is going on.
    Some process is eating up a lot of your memory causing that lag.

    Installed Windows, installed Ati display driver, than installed orginal Creative driver : 2.7.0008 (26. Juli 200). And then i started Starcraft 2 direct but i did not help. Because of that i think i must be a hardware problem...

    Good day to all of you. This is my first post as a member.
    So here it goes....
    I have the same problem with P40 where my games freeze when I play 3d games.
    EVerything is fine like I can watch movies, play mp3s,etc.,,
    I updated my mobo bios, video card's bios, driver, directx., etc.
    I tried disabling other devices(PCI slot w/ modem card and onboard firewire) that shares my agp slot's IRQ...and it actually worked.
    My concern now is that I won't  be able to use these other devices(PCI slot and firewire) because of conflicts with the AGP slot.
    I've read a Microsoft article of manually assigning IRQ, but you need to reinstall winxp and set HAL to standard PC so that you can change youre IRQ.
    I don't want to go that far yet...I've read about memory incompatabilities with athlon64 and I wonder if anybody of you guys can help me with this.

  • 6233 Game Freezing, Problem Or Not?

    I bought the 6233 yesterday, and the Snake game freezes every time I go on it. Is this a problem with the phone, or the game? Also, sometimes when I have been into contacts for example, it takes a while to fade from the screen once I have come off the contact list if you know what I mean.
    Any help apreciated.

    I have done the 5.10 firmware update, and it is still freezing so I have rang Nokia and they advised to return the phone as it is faulty, it shouldn't develop this after 2 days! (only got it Wednesday) So back to 02 I went and got a refund. Back to my trusty old 6230i now.

  • [SOLVED] Source Game Lighting Issue

    When playing older source games such as Team Fortress 2 and HL2 I am able to see the glow of light fixtures through walls. I don't have this issue in newer source games like Left 4 Dead 2. I am using wine 1.3.2 and have all games running with directx 9. I tried using dx8 and I had the same lighting issue. I google'd around but couldn't find anything really relevant to my issue, I might have missed something. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    edit: I have a gtx260 and I am using the latest nvidia drivers.

    On modern GPUs Half-Life 2 should be able to run in all dx-levels (70, 80, 81, 90). However there are might be some visual problems on higher dx-levels.
    Whatever "some visual problems" means
    The page also suggests:

    And well..if nothing helps I would capture a small video showing the problem and report a bug to wine. Playing around with your vid drivers and wine in other versions might help.
    That is the good and most basic thing people often seem to forget. Open Source devs are often very open to bugs you report and their projects can only get better if people report bugs.

    Yahoo games freeze up all the time and have to restart computer. this is causing me a great deal of problems. Server MSN all say it is in the java conection. Never had this before I was forced to use this program.

    When i play games like SOF2, NOLF, GTA3, UT2003 the game freeze.  I have a geforce 4 TI 4200 128Mb, AMD Athlon 800Mhz, 384SDRAM and i run with the officiel drivers of Nvidia(40.72).  The 30.82 freeze the game also.

    I am getting similar problems m8 although I wouldnt say it's on any game BUT UT2003 and it's usually wen i go online. The game crashes very rarely against bot opponents but will almost certainly freeze after abt 5 minutes online :-( Have no idea wot is causing it. My old GF2 Ultra 64MB DDR didnt have any problems but I recently put an MSI GF4 Ti4200 128mb ddr in there. I also have an MSI board and wish to ask, quite simply, is what temperature's are dangerous wen running 512MB DDR PC2100 and an XP 1800 (not o/c). My machine boots at abt 40 and i have a Zalman Flower cooler, i thought it would be MUCH lower than this! Wld anyone suggest adding more coolant, dont think I put that much on initially.
    Anyway hope u sort ur gfx card problem out m8, I am dual booting with Win98 so am gona try it in there with the 30.82 and the 40.72 drivers.
