Steps to upgrade from sql 2008 r2 se (nonclustered) to sql 2012 se (clustered)

hello,
I am currently running a non clustered instance of a sqlserver 2008 R2 SE and need to upgrade to a clustered instance of SQLServer 2012 SE. The underlying OS is Windows 2008 R2 SE. I already bought the second server with the same os online but havent installed
sql 2012 yet.
I am thinking of backing up my databases and script out all the logins and linked servers first.
Then upgrade the SQLServer 2008 R2 SE to 2012 SE. But can I upgrade it to a clustered instance directly? If yes then I can definitely add the other server to the cluster while installing sql.
Can someone point me to the right steps for this upgrade process
Thanks

Hello,
Direct  upgrade to cluster is not possible without installing SQL server in cluster aware mode. I would recommend you need to uninstall SQL server 2008 R2 and then create windows cluster between two nodes and then install SQL server in cluster aware
mode.
You are right with taking up complete backup of all databases with logins and jobs.

  • Hyper-V host server upgrade from Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1 to Server 2012 R2 Datacentre

We are about to upgrade our Hyper-V host servers from Server 2008R2 Enterprise SP1 to Server 2012 R2 Datacentre to take advantage of the latest Hyper-V features.
This only concerns the host servers and not the guest VMs running on the hosts (they will be upgraded next year).
This is what is running on our host servers:
    Host 1
    File,print & issuing CA server
    Exchange 2010
    SharePoint 2010
    Quickbooks server
    Domain controller 1
    Offline CRL CA
    Host 2
    SQL 2008
    Forefront TMG 2010
    Domain Controller 2
    Windows 7 client
With this is mind, I have drafted a rough action plan as follows:
Create a list of all file locations for VM memory, snapshots, virtual memory and Hyper-V config files
    Document all existing system settings
Gather server information, download drivers, RAID controller and other boot drivers & firmware updates (in case the in-place upgrade fails)
    Test all software media
Copy all VMs onto external data storage (NAS drive)
As part of the upgrade process we will redistribute some hard drive space i.e.
expand them to their new sizes and verify the data integrity of copied VMs by powering up each VM in a test environment
Wipe and adjust the sizes of the host partitions to accommodate the expanded VMs
Perform an in-place upgrade to Server 2012 R2 Datacenter
    Check EV, services etc
Change the default locations for VM memory, snapshots, virtual memory and Hyper-V config files
Upgrade Anti-virus and other system software
    Test the system
Are there any glaring omissions? Does anyone have any tips they can give me?

    Hi Marco,
always do a fresh Installation of your hyper-V Hosts, you could end up doing a lot of Troubleshooting with Drivers,Addons etc.. new Installation ist way faster.
Depending if you have a Cluster or Standalone Servers there are different ways to do it.
When you have installed your 2012 R2 Hyper-V Server you just can Import the VMs from the new Location.
As far as i know VMs with snapshots are not supported, so you have to remove them before doing that move and commit the changes to the vhd files, the VM need to be offline on 2008R2 to do that.
You do not Need to Export the VMs on 2008R2, just copy it, normaly you should have all Files of a VM in one Folder.
A working Backup is always your friend on such Tasks.
When the VMs are running on Hyper-V 2012R2 do not forget to Update the Integration Services.
Make Sure your Servers Hardware are still supported with 2012R2, see Server Catalog and Support Matrix of the Vendor.
And last one, where possible and supported convert the VHDs to VHDx Disks, after testing the first boot of the VM.

  • How do I migrate views from MS SQL 2008 to Oracle 11g through SQL Developer

Is there any way to migrate the views from MS SQL 2008 to Oracle 11g through SQL Developer? Please give me some detail steps. Thanks for your help.

    Hi Turloch,
When I use migrate to oracle, I got a problem, the migrate tool create a new schema for me in my case (AZTECA_KSMMS), it migrates all the stuffs under that schema (AZTECA_KSMMS). However my application need the all the Oracle data under schema AZTECA instead of AZTECA_KSMMS. Is there any way to specify specific schema (AZTECA) for target oracle database? Schema remapping is available:
First Capture (separately) then during right click convert on the captured model there is a Specify the conversion options with a Object Naming tab where the schema (and other) name changes are editable.
I have not used this recently.
Also during the migration process, when I choose repository, there is a check box for truncate to reset repository to empty state, Do I need to check that truncate Check Box so the repository will be cleared from last migration? The repository can hold multple migration attempts. Check truncate to get rid of previous attempts information. This cleans up the repository - not the destination database.
There are also online database and offline database options during the migration process, what are the difference between these two choices? After I migrated to Oracle, all my views has a red cross icon next to it. Does that mean the view migration is failed or not? Please give me your comments. Thanks for your help.offline: for big (amount of data) databases with simple data types,
uses bcp + files + scripts + sqlldr.
online: for small (amount of data) databases (easier),
    uses (Java) jdbc.
The view is likely to be broken - recompiling it may help.
The Oracle schema is created using a .sql file - see under generated in the directory you gave originally in the wizard. There is a .out file that contains the result of running this script including any errors. During conversion there are also likely to be warnings displayed on the UI.
There may be a single issue that is causing multiple issues - if viewa depends on functionb, and functionb is broken, viewa will also fail.

If you migrated all the info from time machine to your new MBP. The TM will usually ask to connect to the old backups.. sorry I am not sure is this what you want to do.. Personally I think you start a fresh backup.
BTW Time Capsule does not do anything.. it is a dumb hard disk in a box.. it is TM that does everything.
Look at B5 and B6 here about connecting to your backup.

  • Can't upgrade Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise to Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard

Even though the "Windows Server Installation and Upgrade" TechNet article (DN627667) claims that I can upgrade Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 to Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard, it seems I can't. I get an error message saying "Windows 2008
R2 Enterprise cannot be upgraded to Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard (Server Core Installation). You can choose to install a new copy of Windows..." What might be causing this issue? Thanks for any input! :)

    Hi,
Firstly, for retail versions, Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise with SP1 can be upgraded to Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard/Datacenter.
I assume you are running Windows Server 2008 R2 retail version, right?
In addition, it seems that in earlier version than Windows Server 2012,
once you install the server in Core or with GUI mode, you could not switch to the other. The only option was to rebuild the server from scratch.
Did you install Windows Server 2008 R2 in GUI? If yes, I recommend you to upgrade it to Windows Server 2012 R2 in GUI
mode to see if the issue persists. If it succeed and you want to run in server core, you can just remove the graphical shell and convert your Windows Server 2012 R2 to Server Core.
    Best regards,
    Susie
Thanks for replying Susie. The 2008 R2 software is the one provided by Microsoft for Action Pack subscribers, so I'm assuming it's not retail. That's another thing, I think I should be installing the GUI as my 2008 has a GUI, not just the server core. For some
reason I missed that and clicked on the server core only install!

  • Upgrade from sqlserver 2008 to sqlserver 2014, can I put software into different drive other than C: ?

Originally my sqlserver 2008 software was installed into E:, but I didn't see any drive selection options available during the upgrade steps, so now my sqlserver 2014 is installed into default C: drive.
If there are any ways to specify different drive ?
    Thanks
    Sophia Su

“Upon doing the initial upgrade, can I designate the target drive/letter”?
I didn’t see  a place to change it in the upgrade process.
I don't want to uninstall sqlserver 2008, I just want to upgrade from 2008 to 2014 and be able to put the sqlserver 2014 software into the same drive (not C:) as my sqlserver 2008 is.
If previous version was on E drive upgraded version should remain on E drive as well. AFAIK there does not comes an option to specify different drive letter when doing in place upgrade how ever if you do side by side upgrade you can install new instance
of 2014 on what ever drive you like
In side by side upgrade you have to first install SQL Server 2014 and then move databases using backup and restore then migrate logins and jobs using scripting method.
After you are sure your upgrade process is complete you can uninstall 2008 instance.
How do you check your SQL Server 2014 is installed on C drive. Please  note even if you install SQL server on some other drive(like D,E..) some binaries always go on C drive thet nature is by default , if you are looking at binaries then its wrong to
deduce that your SQL Server is on C drive.
Can you go to E drive can you see program files..Microsoft SQL Server ?

  • SharePoint 2013 Server OS upgrade from Windows 2008 R2 to Windows 2012 R2

Is it possible to have SharePoint 2013 farm to have mixed version of OS (Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 2012 R2).
We have a request to upgrade our farm servers from WIN 2008 R2 to Win 2012 R2. We have 5 servers in farm -
2 App servers - running with Central Admin, Service Applications, User Profile
3 Web Front End Servers- running web application, search and workflow manager
the database layer is separate on sql 2012 R2
We want to upgrade OS from windows 2008 R2 to windows 2012 R2 and SQL to SQL 2014.
What will be right approach to do OS upgrade in above scenario to minimize the impact of downtime.
May be add windows 2012 based servers in farm one by one and replace the windows 2008 R2 based servers from server.
    Regards,
    Kunal Abrol

Its possible, but I wouldn't recommend it.  The problem is that you can only install SharePoint 20103 on Windows Server 2012 r2 using the slipstreamed SP1 version.  I assume that you used the regular version to install on you Server 2008 r2 versions.
Even if you upgrade those servers to SP1 there are some minor differences in the builds between slipstreamed SP1 and upgraded SP1.  So although it will work it isn't recommended.
Also, you should be aware the upgrade of inplace SharePoint servers running Windows 2008 r2 to Windows 2012 r2 is not supported.
To upgrade to server 2012 you'll need to add 2012 servers to your environment using the slipstreamed version os SharePoint and then remove the old server 2008 r2 servers as soon as possible.  For the period of the upgrade you should be able to get away
with running the farm in a mixed state.

I compared the registry with a working system but the Counters - and all other keys - looked fine.
At the same time as upgrading a DC a colleague was updating an unrelated server, and he started to see similar events in the event log (but for the Dell OpenManage Essentials service, not ADWS). The error was complaining about KERNELBASE.dll which set my
spider sense tingling. We knew that this server had Windows Updates pending. Fully updating it solved the problem on that server.
I solved the ADWS problem in the end by fully Windows Updating the DC. In particular, the ADWS Service started successfully after installing KB2919355 and rebooting. That also
'unlocked' a further 59 updates pending.
After the in-place upgrade I always fully Windows Update but I'm 99% certain that KB2919355 did NOT show up when I did a Check for Updates straight after a reboot so I thought the DC was up-to-date. I then spent hours investigating the ADWS problem and rebooted
as part of the diagnostics. It was then that I noticed on the logon screen that there were updates pending...
Moral of the story? Windows Update, then Update again, and again, and again. The length of time it takes to Windows Update after an upgrade from 2008R2 to 2012R2 is painful though.

  • What are the recommended steps to upgrade from CF7 to CF8

I have read all of the documentation for how to upgrade from
CF 7.02 to CF 8. Well there is actually only one blurb in all of
    the CF docs.
"Upgrade installation You can upgrade from ColdFusion MX,
ColdFusion MX 6.1, and ColdFusion MX 7. When upgrading from
ColdFusion MX, ColdFusion MX 6.1, or ColdFusion MX 7, the installer
preserves the existing settings and installs in a new directory,
automatically assigning ports that do not conflict with the
    existing installation."
OK that sounds simple enough, so i went ahead and installed
it. Well it did not work, now I am stuck somewhere between 7 and 8.
My basic step, as I can best recall at 1:00AM.
    * Select Multi server Configuration
    * Select install path, I used D:\JRun4
    * This is where my existing cf7 install was located
    * installer told me port 8300 was being used so it gave me
    port 8306 instead
    * Selected d: for ColdFusion8DotNetService install path
    * Select Passwords for admin and rds
    * installed cf
    * received error after install
    (Adobe_ColdFusion_8_InstallLog.log)
    ANT Script Error:
    Status: ERROR
Additional Notes: ERROR - jrun.xmlUnable to remove existing
    file D:\JRun4\bin\jrun.exe
    * rebooted
    * can't login to cfadmin at port 8306
    * tried to login to cfadmin at port 8300, everythin works
    * it appears the cf7 services are still running,
    * didn't notice any new cf8 services, excpet the dotnet
    stuff
    Any assistance would be appriciated.

What you are describing is a simultaneous update of JRun and
    CF. For
just an update of CF you need to redeploy the CF EAR file as
    described
in the JRun manual. For just an update of JRun you have to
    wait until
updater 7 is released (or join the beta and file bugs if you
    don't like
    the procedure).

    the JRUN console and

Use a CAR file for that.

    as clean at all.
In place upgrades are never clean. In my book, an upgrade
    means
    rebuilding from scratch.
