Stopped creating pdfs.  Sort of.

Hello
I am using FM 10, Acrobat X Pro, Windows XP.
Everything was working fine and then yesterday I started having a problem producing a pdf.
It has started building a pdf really slowly.  When I build a book it goes through the process of conversion to a ps file, but the end product is a file of 0 kb.
Using a 3rd party piece of software, I can pdf individual files, but not multiple selected files from a book.
For some reason, if I cancel the book build, it comes up with the 'Cannot Print Some Images....' warning.
I'm beginning to panic as I've reinstalled FM and it's still doing the same thing.
Any ideas?
EDIT: It will print to paper just fine.

• do you use FM 10.0.1?
10.0.1.408
• are you printing to file with subsequent Distiller or Save as PDF?
I've tried both.  Save as PDF produces the PS file a lot quicker, but the produced file is still 0 kb
• if you use Save as PDF, is "Convert CMYK to RGB" selected?
Yes
• have you checked your Temp folder, it should not contains thousands of old files.
Are we talking the Windows temp folder?  I've just emptied it and tried it again; same thing.

We have an application that create reports that we want to print to PDF and save on our server.  We have been doing this for years.  Have 50 employees doing this.  One computer is having an issue were they will print to the "PDF Printer" and the pdf output file is save to their desktop, but after multiple successful prints, the print will get hung up in the PDF Printer Queue.
This is on a Win7 Machine, with current windows updates, using Acrobat X Standard version 10.1.10  so I think I am up to date.
Does anyone have suggestions about what to look at or where the problem may be coming from.
To fix the problem the user can shut down (restart) the computer and printing to pdf works again.

I don't get any messages in the queue or any place that I know of.  I looked in the system log and application log for hints and nothing occurs at the time of the error .  Do you have suggestions of where to look for errors that I may have missed?
The print just stay their.  We usually set the output to also display when completed but Acrobat never displays the report. So somewhere the program hangs or fails.

I have Acrobat 9.5 and when I try to create>pdf from scanner, it displays an error "Adobe acrobat has stopped working". Is there any way I can use this functionality?

Provide you have Acrobat 9 installed in an OS for which Acrobat 9 is compatible then you can use the functionality.
As well, you need a scanner connected, powered up, and the software installed. Acrobat 9 "prefers" TWAIN drivers.
Always visit the scanner vendor's site and download - install the latest greatest software.
n.b., The Acrobat 9.x product family passed into "End of Support" mid-year 2013.
As well the Acrobat 9.x product family is not compatible with contemporary OSs.
    Be well...

  • "stopped" status while creating pdf from AI

Hi, my friend taught me a way (to "print" pdf) to create PDF from illustrator that could make the file size much smaller, but now my question is, it works in my macbook (ppd version 1.1) but not my desktop imac (ppd version 1.0), the printer status always jump to stopped during the process of creating the PDF, anyone got any idea why? is it because of ppd version different? where can i donwload the latest ppd version. Many Thanks.

    What is the LiveCycle version?
Is it possible for you to share an example(somewhere on public file sharing sites)?

  • Create pdf stopped working - WindowsXP-Office2003-Acrobat6

After 3 years of creating pdfs just fine, I swear it seems like "it" just stopped working.
Windows XP Media Edition - Service Pak 3
    Office Professional 2003
    Acrobat Standard 6.0
In any Office ap (word, excel, publisher, etc), if I do Print/Adobe PDF/OK - I get:
"Windows cannot print due to a problem with the current printer setup."
I've run Acrobat "Detect and Repair".
I've uninstalled (through Control Panel) and then reinstalled Acrobat.
I've run "Detect and Repair" in the various Office applications.
I've run into lots of "buzz" on the internet after googling the Error Message, and lots of other queries - but can't find an explanation or a fix. (Lots of other companies trying to sell their pdf makers by saying this is a big problem with Acrobat.)
I know - I should probably upgrade to the newest version of Acrobat, but I'm not comfortable that 6.0 that "worked" for years suddenly has stopped.
I use my machine hours each day, and no doubt there are background updates to Norton, Office, etc. going on frequently. But don't think I've made any major changes to the system to cause this.
    Help? Thanks - John D

You select the Adobe PDF printer, but check the print to file button that is by that choice. In the printer box of my print menu, there is a little "Print to file" checkbox that I am talking about. For regular printers this creates a file that you could simply copy to the printer and complete the process. With Acrobat, the file must be processed in Distiller. What this does is checks the basic operation versus the automated step done by the PDF Port part of the Adobe PDF printer.
The printing process in Acrobat has several steps that are automated. The most basic process is to create a printer file (it is actually a PS file) when printing to the Adobe PDF printer. If you can successfully create that file, the next step is to open it in Distiller. If there are problems with the file, you should see those pointed out in the Distilling process. If you get a PDF from this process, but not when you print normally to the Adobe PDF printer (no print to file), then it suggests you have a problem with AcroTray (This should be running in the background all the time - check with ctrl-alt-del to see the tasks).
PDF Maker is simply another layer on top of the Adobe PDF printer that adds PDF Marks to the PS file created in the printing process by the printer. Normally, AcroTray will automatically process the PS file with Distiller and you don't deal with the extra steps yourself. The creation of the PS file is often where folks run into trouble with large files and running out of memory in the TEMP folder. The extra layers from PDF maker often bloat this file a lot.
Hope that I did not confuse you with the extra info. However, the info may help you understand the diagnostic process for tracing down the problem. Saying something does not work often leaves a lot of room for possible solutions and the first step is to narrow the problem down to a specific cause. Bill

Why does my Adobe Acrobat 9.5 hang when creating PDF?  The progress bar just stop about 2/3 through.  I have Windows 7.  Thanks.

Say for example... I want to print an online "order" receipt to PDF. Or print to PDF a web page of any sort.  It didn't used to hang up.

Is this global to Create PDF or (more likely) for a particular file?
    Is this Create PDF from
    - multiple pdf's?
    - from file(s)?
Crashes/Hangs related to Create PDF from file could indicate a corrupt image file within the source document.
Chop the document in half, try to Create PDF, try the other half of the file. It would not take long to isolate a bad page or graphic.

  • My Wireless HP ENVY 4500 All-In-One Printer Has Stopped Printing PDF Files

I installed the subject wirelessly printer about 1 years ago. It works quite well with my iMac OS X10.9.1 desktop and my Win7 laptop PC. But, it recently stopped printing PDF files for no apparent reason, and I get no error messages.
It won't print PDFs from my browsers nor from Adobe Reader (11.0.07) ... but all other document file types print OK from my browsers and Reader.
The only thing that comes close to printing PDFs is that sometimes, when I try to print a PDF page or file from within Adobe Reader, it prints - on a single sheet - 6 tiny duplicate sections of what appears to be the upper right-hand quadrant only of the original PDF document.
Please note that I un-installed and re-installed the printer and its driver twice without success. Also, no amount of printer re-configuring of layout, size, etc. made a difference. I received some previous work-around advice about converting the PDFs to a Word document, and printing that. But this is just not convenient; and besides, the printer is suppose to print PDFs (PDF is my document of choice for basically all my collaborative work). I should also state that I received no help with this problem from the HP ENVY user group forum; so, I guess that means you may be my last resort. And finally, I don't know if this is relevant or not, but I upgraded my iMac from Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) to Mavericks (OS X 10.9) a few months ago - this upgrade was frought with all sorts of teething problems! - and I am now somewhat suspicious that something in the upgrade might have something to do with my current PDF problem.
Could someone please advise me on any Adobe Reader and/or printer re-configs, re-sets or other actions I should try?
    Thanks

Correction to initial post: The 6 tiny sections incorrectly printed on a single sheet are actually from the bottom right-hand quadrant of the original PDF page - NOT the upper right-hand quadrant.

  • Problems in Windows 8 creating PDF documents using Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.5.5

I am running Windows 8 with the latest version of MS Office (version 14) and Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.5.5.  I was not having any problems making/printing PDF documents until about 30 days ago.  The only things that I can think of that have changed during this time period is 1) I updated my Office Suite to version 14 from the previous version and, most recently, 2) my Adobe Acrobat Reader program was automatically updated to the latest version.  I ended-up uninstalled Adobe Reader becuase the new program became my default for openning all Adobe PDF files, even when I tried to force my computer to use Adobe Acrobat Pro as the default (becuase doing so allows me to edit docments with features not available in the free Reader version).  When I go to print a Word document, for example, to Adobe Acrobat, the process stalls/stops at the point where you are supposed to choose a location to print/safe the new PDF document file.  All I get is the Save-As Screen with most of the buttons and folder tree blank (see example below).  After 5-10 seconds, "not responding" shows up in the title of the Save-As Screen and I have to click the "X" box in the upper right corner to abort.  This problem seems to have first started when trying to print pictures from the Windows picture viewer.  After a while long, I noticed that the same problem occured when printing from my internet browser (Firefox), but I coudl still print from Word or Excel.  Now, as of the last couple of days, I can't print from any program except the basic Paint software program.  I think this may actually be a Windows issue because when trying to toublshoot this problem, I re-installed Adobe Acrobat Pro and it did not help. I also tried making PDF documents using the free PrimoPDF software and had the exact same problem.  I have no idea where to go from here.  All I know is that I desperately need to create PDF documents and cannot!  Please help!!

You're asking a lot of ancient Acrobat to work with an Office that never existed when it was made. "Just updated my office suite" is a massive change, and Window 8 didn't exist at that time either...

  • Question re Create PDF from Word doc

    Hi
I am trying to create a pdf from a Word document (Word 2007, Acrobat 8 Professional), and am having lots of trouble with images, fonts and document overhead. With the fonts, i generate the PDF by saying Create Pdf from the plugin in Word. I specify in the Preferences that fonts are not to be embedded. I then open the PDF and access PDF Optimiser -> Audit Space Usage, and it says that fonts take up like 20% of the document, however there are only like 10 lines of text in Arial (9pt), and 6 titles also in Arial (Bold). I dont understand why Font is taking up so much space considering that i have elected not to embed fonts (if i go to the Fonts section in the Optimiser, it shows both embedded and unembedded panes blank).
With the images, i have 2 jpegs in the footer, that are compressed (JPEG -> Low). The other thing i am struggling with is the headers and footers, if i generate the PDF from the Word doc with Headers/Footers, then images take up over 15% of the document. Not sure if there is a way to add headers and footers within minimum impact of filesize? I have tried checking everything in the 3 categories of Dicard Objects, Discard User data and Clean Up. but the Document Overhead remains at 35%.
What else can i do to get these filesizes reduced?I have been researching this for days and have not come across anything that has helped.I have tried to PDF print, i have changed the font to like Courier, ensured no thumbnails or bookmarks, ensured JPEGs are not embedded in the doc, tried Save As, Save As under a different filename - basically anthing you can find on the net i have found and tried, but still cant fix this!!!! please, if anyone knows acrobate 8 better than me / or knows what the problem is, please advise????
    Thanks very much.

The colors and size in a graphic needs to be done in a graphics editor. What type of editor would depend on the use of vector graphics versus bitmap. Sometimes vector graphics are larger than bitmaps if you are using a lot of lines that would display better as just a splotch of color. Such are the variations between vector and bitmap graphics, but important if you are looking for size reduction. For a bitmap, I would do the sizing and color depth with IrfanView, but you should be able to do that with PhotoShop if you have it. Vector graphics can be adjusted in Illustrator. The size of vector graphics is not an issue since they are scalable, but the size of a bitmap is important since your are looking at individual pixels and that depends on size. The point is that if you can adjust the color depth and size for the desired pixel resolution, the bitmap is optimized for the conversion to PDF from WORD.
As I mentioned, the smallest file size job options should minimize font storage in the PDF. Checking with the PDF Optimizer does not always give you all of the fonts. I am not sure why. It is better to check the font tab in the document properties to see what has been embedded. There is a preflight macro to embed fonts, you might check to see if there is one to delete fonts (I have not checked on that). Sometimes you can play with the reprint of a PDF, but that is not an option that is generally recommended, particularly if you have any tagging or such. Of course, tagging can really bloat a PDF, but is needed for a variety of reasons such as format for saving back to WORD (not a great workflow), accessability, and related issues. In another topic, there is some discussion of the purposes of tagging and bookmarks. However, the tags and bookmarks take space if that is really an issue for you. The latter are avoided if you use the print to the Adobe PDF printer and do not use PDF Maker in the PDF creation process. Again, there is a trade-off here in terms of size and functionality, particularly accessibility compliance.
Not sure I am helping as I run on, but sort what might be useful for you.

  • Create PDF from webpage font color turns white

While using Create PDF from a web page the text in the final PDF is colored white so I cannot see it.  Italicized text remains black and is find.  However, the font color of standard text is turned white.  I know the text is there because I can use the text editing tool to copy the text out into notepad.  This problem occurs with Adobe Acrobat X and XI.  However, when I use Adobe Acrobat VIII there is not problem.  Furthermore, with the website I am converting to PDF the problem only happens if I try to convert the entire site, which is about 1,100 pages.  If I stop the job half way, the font color remains fine.
    Any ideas?

Under the Settings... button in the Create PDF from web page dialog, do you have the checkbox selected for "Force These Settings for All Pages"?

  • Acrobat 9 adding odd spaces in words when creating PDF

In the process of creating a PDF from a document using Acrobat 9 Standard AND Pro, extra spaces are being inserted into the text.
I have searched everywhere for a solution. Anything I found indicated fonts should be embedded. That's not a solution as we embed all fonts used in a document. Technical notes:
