Storage advice

I want to add some storage to my system.
Since msata doesn't have enough capacity for a decent amount of money, i will go with an external solution.
should i go esata ssd or usb 3.0?  USB 3.0 has the advantage that i could connect it to nearly every pc my friends have to share data.
But esata ssd is faster than USB 3.0, right?
What would you get and why?

I think an external SSD regardless of connection type is a waste of money, you won't get much or any increase in speed over a 5400 or 7200 rpm HDD.  It may however be more durable, like if it's dropped.  I also don't think you'd see much of a difference betwen eSATA and USB 3.0, but USB is simpler.  If you get a 2.5" external drive you don't need a second connection for power like you would with eSATA.
I also think adding a drive to the optical bay is the best way to go, that's what I did.

  • Document storage advice required

    Good day,
Our developers are doing a project that involves processing Purchasing Invoices that have been scanned and converted to PDF. They are using ArchiveLink and at the moment are storing these documents directly in the database. They(developers) were under the impression they were simply linking the documents from the file system but I don't think that is correct. It is still under development.
Anyway, to cut a long story short I would just like to know if there are any other implications to storing approximately 2000 x 130kb PDF documents on average per month in a ERP database ? I know it will eventually effect our backups and restore times but as far as MaxDB is concerned is the database usually configured in a specific way to handle this kind of thing like on Content Management Server ?
I would like them to move the documents to Content Management Server or a 3rd party solution like ImageNow and just need some advice.
    Many thanks.
    Regards,
    Nelis

After doing some more research I came across notes 653774 which states "..file repositories have been eliminated as of Basis Release 6.10. If a file repository is used in a live system, the data can no longer be addressed after a release upgrade to Basis Release 6.10 (or later version)." ...so that will prove helpful
Also note 595663 gives information on using ArchiveLink with database storage and mentions it should only be used with smaller datasets, for production SAP Content Server should be used.
This more or less gives me the info I require.
I'm still curious to know whether MaxDB is specifically setup differently on Content Server to handle large volumes of binary documents ?

  • I need multi-system media storage advice please...

I have a small video production company; we currently have two workstations, a Power Mac G4 dual 1.42Ghz and a Power Mac G5 dual 2.0Ghz. Our workload is increasing at a healthy rate. But with more work comes the need for larger and more flexible storage for our media. We primarily work in DV and more recently HDV.
Typically my editor and I will work on different projects back and forth. What we are forced to do is copy all our assets back and forth from system to system. We have multiple firewire drives on both systems but sneaker-netting them back and forth doesn't work because normally both projects we are working on may share the same drive. So inevitable, we are forced to copy it from one firewire to another or through the network. It's not over efficient to say the least, and at times it messes up backups and keeping things correctly up to date.
What we need is some sort of shared storage that both systems can access a RAID setup at the same time, but of course has enough bandwidth to serve the Power Macs their HDV media. An Xserve is a total overkill, and honestly beyond our budget.
Does anyone have any cost-effective suggestions? I would think, bandwidth-wise, something like a Firewire 800 or eSATA makes the most sense. I am very computer savvy, but I have to admit my knowledge of the different solutions and how they could work for out setup evades me. That’s why I've come to you guys!
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!

can someone please recommend a solution that I can use to store and access all my dv projects? I'm using imovie, but soon to upgrade to fcp, and am looking at the lacie 2tb raid drives. My issue is that I do not understand Raid and how it will affect my ability to access and edit directly. I tend to like to import lots of footage (60-80gb) and then work through the editing process with all of it at my fingertips. I want a solution that will allow me to put all my video in and work with it from there, while knowing that I have the ability to recover the data should the drive malfunction. Ideally I'd store all my footage on that drive long term, but not sure if that's the best way. Somebody straighten me out on this.
It's a bit daunting. I'm not afraid of spending up to about $1500 on this, but I want to be sure that I pick the correct hardware. I do not necessarily need the ability to share over network or have multiple machines access projects simultaneously, just redundancy / stability and speed for accessing during editing sessions I guess.
    thanks! BT

  • Network Attached storage advice

Can anyone tell me if Maxtor's Shared Storage Plus NAS drive works okay with the iMac core duo.
I'm concerned about the software intallation disc - I'm guessing the software is not universal.
Any other iMac core duo owners using a NAS successfully? Any other brands recommended? Any tips?

I think you will find that you do not need the software!!
The software is usually a set of utils to maintain the NAS, and is not needed to connect to it.
I have a Linksys NAS which does not have Mac software, and is not suported by Linksys. However, I just plugged it in and the iMac found it on the network.
Basic functions on the NAS were then accessed via Safari.

  • Mac hard drive storage advice

I am thinking of upgrading from a Macpro to a iMac, though I currently have 4 storage drives in the Macpro, whereas I can only have 1 in the iMac, with the option for connecting external drives. Someone is offering to sell me an older raid enclosure http://www.planetdv.net/Content/By_Manufacturer/G-Tech/Storage/G-Tech_G-RAID_Pro_FireWire_ RAID_Storage_Solutions_big.asp
I would like to use it not in a raid configuration, but instead just as a way to put 4 drives in it at a time to always have 4 extra drives connected and availalbe on my desktop. Does anyone know if this could be done? Would it work with Premiere?
    Thanks.

Also I just saw the major problem with Firewire 800 in this statement.
"That said, G-RAID Pro saturates the FireWire bus bandwidth and provides a minimum sustained data transfer rate of 75 MB/second".
    What does that mean?
    Thanks.
I'm not Bill, but Firewire 800 cannot sustain anywhere close to 800 MB/s. You see, 800 Mbps is not the same as 800 MB/s. Not even close. 800 Mbps means "800 Megabits per second" whereas 800 MB/s means "800 Megabytes per second". Using the formula that one byte equals eight bits, the maximum theoretical bandwidth of Firewire 800 is only 100 MB/s. And since there is a little bit of overhead caused by the FW800 controller itself and its drivers, the maximum sustainable bandwidth of FW800 is only about 85 MB/s. Add to that additional bottlenecks caused by the FW800 controller in the drive enclosure, and that makes the maximum sustained data transfer rate only 75 MB/s (which is the rate quoted from where Bill got this info from).

  • Online Storage advice,

I currently have about 500 GB of stored movie footage: I think because my hard drive says I have 1.59TB available in the iMovie folder.
My current backup drive is full: Mercury Elite Pro.
How much storage space is needed for the average iMovie user? I have not a clue.
Where do you store your video content (as well as the rest of your backup)? Does a person who saves a lot of video footage need 4 TB....8 TB? Again I have no idea about this.
    What about online storage?
Any and all possible ideas would be much appreciated.

I assume, your cam uses SDcards and AVCHD?
then, tools as iMovie09 offer an 'archive' feature - which is mainly nothing else to store the 'video' on such a card WITH THE WHOLE DATA STRUCTURE... that allows tools as iMovie or FinalCut (e/pro) to 'mount' such an archive and import 'from camera'.- if you do NOT archive the structure, you need a time-consumin manual conversion process!
as mentioned - my device creates ~6GBs/h - too much to fit onto a dataDVD.. plus, the price-ratio of DVD vs. Harddrive is on HDDs site ...
the already imported video (=which gets automatically converted into another 'format', which is ~ 40-50GBs/h!), is way above the limits a dataDVD can fit.
just to mention: a videoDVD fits up to 2h, but SDef, not HDef, and for sure not 1080p.
a finalized project has again a different 'format' - depends on your settings.. 100MB - 20GB per hour... .. a HDef export should eat ~ 6-8GBs/h.
forget disks.. buy an ext. harddrive.. buy another one to backup the first..-

Here's my situation: I'm about to install Boot Camp so I can run a couple of audio editors in Windows xp. The stuff I'm going to edit is - at the moment - on my Mac HD (i.e. in HFS+).
Here's what I planned to do: make an NTFS partition big enough to comfortably accommodate the XP and the software, run Mac Drive (or something similar) to access the wave files I have on my Mac HD and when I'm finished editing, save them on the Mac HD again. Does this sound plausible? Will I run into any problems? Or should I make the NTFS partition big enough to host the wave files I'm going to be editing? This doesn't really appeal to me, but I'm open to suggestions... I appreciate any tips you may have.

Sounds resonable to me. Using MacDrive in XP to read and write files on a HFS+ partition usually pose no problem.
A second possibility and/or addition (and one I would prefer) is to use an external harddisk formatted with FAT32 file system for transfer of files and maybe also for backup of your files.
But keep in mind that FAT32 has a built-in single-file size limitation of 4GB.
If timing is critical and/or you are doing real-time editing it might be advisable to have the audio files on your Windows NTFS partition while working on them.

  • Storage Advice for iTunes Library

My LaCie 200G drive is almost full, I'm using it to hold my iTunes library. I placed a large number of rare live performance recordings on this drive and my collection is still growing. I'm looking for a drive in the 500G range to which I could move my current library and add new acquisitions, any suggestion?
    Thanks

I would look for rebate deals on a large Seagate or Hitachi IDE/ATA hard drive, and stick it inside a third-party Firewire or USB enclosure like this one or this one. This should save you a bit of money over buying a pre-assembled external drive, and assembling it yourself only requires a screwdriver.

    Hi,
I suggest you read this paper : Oracle XML DB : Choosing the Best XMLType Storage Option for Your Use Case
It is available on the XML DB home page along with other documents you may be interested in.
To sum up, the storage method you need depends on the requirement, i.e. how XML data is accessed.
There was one where a Mr. Drake was explaining something about not using clob as an attribute to storing the xml and that "it will break your application."I think the message Mark Drake wanted to convey is that CLOB storage is now deprecated and shouldn't be used anymore (though still supported for backward compatibility).
The default XMLType storage starting with version 11.2.0.2 is now Binary XML, a posted-parsed binary format that optimizes both storage size and data access (via XQuery), so you should at least use it instead of the BASICFILE CLOB.
Schema-based Binary XML is also available, it adds another layer of "awareness" for Oracle to manage instance documents.
To use this feature, the XML schema must be registered with "options => dbms_xmlschema.REGISTER_BINARYXML".
The other common approach for schema-based XML is Object-Relational storage.
    BTW... you may want to post here next time, in the dedicated forum : {forum:id=34}
Mark Drake is one of the regular user, along with Marco Gralike you've probably seen too at OOW.

  • Video Storage / Mirroring Question & Advice

    Good Day
I am assembling about 5 years worth of video from tape, card and disk and putting it all onto a Drobo Pro w/ 8x2TB drives. The drive should be big enough. And my plan is to just get another Drobo if need be and daisy chain them together. I am not editing off of them (Drobo ***** for that!), just need a very reliable backup / storage solution.
However, due to my paranoia, I want a mirror of the drive(s) just in case there is a fire at the office, flood, theft etc. Just can't have all this footage existing in 1 location.
We are a small operation so things like Xserve seem a little much to me. Any ideas on options? Is it as simple as we have to get a second Drobo and make a copy of the main one and keep it off site? Is tape backup a good option? Online would be great, but 20TB+?
    Need advice! Thanks in advance

You will need Screen Spanning Doctor(SSD) with your iMac to get 2 different screens. Of course, if you are a UNIX geek and know how, you can turn off mirroring in the terminal. SSD is a lot simpler for us non-geeks. You should be able to find it on VersionTracker.com or MacUpdate.com
With an expanded screen, you might still be unable to use your 1920x1080 or whatever because of VRAM limitations.. I was able to run the 14" and 19" in thousands of colors, but not millions from an iBookG4. I can run the 19" at 1280x1024 and the 15" MacBookPro at 1440x900 in millions, but the MPB can handle a 30" at millions. With the iBookG4, I had to have SSD to get an extended screen. I am pretty sure the iMacG5 required that, too.
    Hope this helps.

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion's Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

  • Advice on 2TB external storage for 1080 DVCPRO HD footage

I'm trying to find the best external storage for editing on a 17" Macbook Pro.
I'll be working on a feature shot with the HVX-200 at 1080i/24pa. I'm figuring we'll need approximately 2TB of storage.
Are FW800 drives fast enough to edit 1080?
Is it possible to run a 2TB SATA raid off the ExpressCard?
And as a side question, is the Macbook Pro fast enough to handle 1080? (we haven't purchased the system yet). It sounds to me like it will be, but wanted to see if anyone had any real world experience with it.
To be honest, I know just enough about the brave new world of the HVX-200 to get myself in trouble, so bear with me.
Any advice on the drives, and even good vendors to get them from, is much appreciated.

Why are you shooting 1080? This camera does best at
720p. And in fact, the files sizes will be very
small at 720p24...just 22GB/hour. And since the
chips are really ideal for 720p...I see no gain in
    shooting 1080i.
    But that is me.
I just finished a show that was a mix of Varicam and

    That's a good question. lol.
The director wants 1080 because there's potentially going to be a 35mm blowup at the end of all this. Depending on who you ask, I've heard 720 may lose anywhere from 10-30% resolution on blowup compared to 1080.
Though it's been a back and forth decision. He's not 100% sold on 1080 (especially because we're finding few people have done it with the HVX-200) and 720 sure makes the workflow much easier.
That's been a question we've been unable to find a good answer to, is shooting 1080i really that much better (to justify all the extra work in the process) than just shooting 720/24pn and doing an upres at the end?
how exactly are the chips ideal for 720p?
By the way, I've been reading your blog. It's one of the best sources I've found out on the net for this stuff... Keep up the good work.
