Strange capture problem and work around

I have a Sony DCR-TRV33E camcorder and imovie has no problems capturing nor does FCE 4 unless I capture a clip. When I capture a clip it captures the stereo audio track as 2 separate mono tracks. I can get it stereo by panning a1 left and a2 right but it should be a single stereo track. To sort the audio out the following procedure works:
1. Go into the folder that contains the captured clip and rename it. This causes the clip to be disconnected.
2. Delete the disconnected clip from the browser.
3. Import the clip (renamed file) back into the project. It now has a single stereo track as it should.
This looks like a bug to me. It's a bit strange.
Has anybody else experienced this behavior.
I was capturing DV PAL Anamorphic.

Sure.
You will see little green inward facing triangles (stereo pair) on the audio tracks to identify the status.
Just reverse the process to switch back.
Option-L is the keyboard method.
Any tracks can be modified as long as they are next door to each other.

We asked for that in the L7 forum for years and got little in terms of a response (see below). And definitely no sticky!
Sure, there are a few knowledge base documents that describe issues with L8, but in general, acknowledging known problems is not something Apple does, unfortunately. How do I know this? Well, experience. And also, from what they have to say about their software in the Getting Started guide:
"Experience has shown that such system _problems are rarely caused by a defect in Apple programs or hardware products_. All Apple hardware and software is _rigorously tested_ by a diverse range of musicians and studio users, from a variety of fields and uses, who look for any faults or problems.

This is not unexpected—as the various applications, operating system versions, and drivers—are all developed, and improved in parallel by unrelated programming teams. Now... there is some kind of "tips" board somewhere amongst Apple's Discussion Forums. When the subject of having a sticky came up once on the L7 board a while ago, a mod suggested that I submit tips/workarounds for inclusion on that board. I checked it out and it's a freekin' nightmare to find anything. And "submitting" tips means that someone has to approve it, and who knows if that person would be Logic-savvy or not. So there it is...

Have never heard of that problem before so can only give you an idea of some things to check.
Check in the Homehub management that it is not set to block access to the mobile devices. If you did a factory reset of the hub then it should have cleared any settings but it might be worth checking.
Have you checked that they are connecting to your Homehub and not to BTWifi which would require further log on to get internet access.
What exactly is happening with the devices when you try to connect to the internet. Is it all things to do with the internet or can you connect by 3g?
Have you tried to connect using another router such as at a friends house?

IPhone iOS 4 high CPU bug and work around

Using activity monitor app, frequently I notice that the System CPU usage won't drop below 10% with total usage ranging from 15 to 20% (idle never goes above 90%). Closing apps doesn't recover from this state, neither does turning off services, WiFi or 3G. The only thing that works (other than restarting the phone) is to turn on airplane mode for about 10 seconds and then turn it off. The System CPU usage will still be high while in airplane mode, but will drop down to about 2% (6% total) after turning airplane mode off and idle will stay above 90% at that point.
I've tried all combinations of turning WiFi, 3G, location services, etc off and on, but only turning airplane mode on and off works.
I've done a full restore and it still happens. I have no idea what the trigger is. It doesn't seem to be based on what apps are or were running because I've had it happen overnight when not running any apps. It might be based on mail or something, but killing the mail app doesn't fix it. Only turning airplane mode on and off does.
Letting the System CPU hover around 10% instead of 3% causes a noticeable drop in battery life. This needs to be fixed.

I have the same problem, and it was the same even for previous versions of iPhone OS. I don't think it's a time zone issue, as I am living in Norway and the reports here are the same from various locations.
However, I think I might have found a workaround for this problem. Normally I have my mail, contacts and calendar synced via Exchange. When I in addition to syncing with Exchange select "Sync contacts with Outlook" in the "info" tab in iTunes on my computer, the dates appear to be transferred correctly. But then again, this gives me several contact groups on my iPhone, whilst I really only want and need one group, the Exchange contacts. Anyway, the contacts appear only once when I select the "group" all contacts on my iPhone.
Hope this can be of any help until the bug is fixed.

Strange wifi problem, laptops work fine, phones do...

we have a homehub3 and have just started having a very strange problem
The laptops in the house all connect and work fine over the wifi as normal, but as from yesterday our, ipad, 2 iphones and a samsung galaxy all connect to the wifi, but cant actually use the internet. we've tried restarting everything, forgetting the wireless connections on the phones and reconnecting but nothing appears to work. Any suggestions?

The Skinny on IMAP vs POP Email and work arounds

     It took me a while to figure out email so I figured I'd share what I've learned so far. Do feel free to reply with more useful tips for us all if anyone has some.
First email accounts are either IMAP or POP and the first step was figuring out the difference:
IMAP
   Mirror of the server
What is done one place is done everywhere because you are looking at the server.
       Advantage: can access email from multiple devices/locations
       Disadvantage: May have to mark as read individually when adding to a new device
POP
   Independent of the server
What is done one place stays that place because you have moved it from the server.
        Advantage: once it's delivered the mail can be viewed offline
        Disadvantage: where ever it is delivered once, the other divices do no have access to the mail
Think of the server as a huge mailbox as big as a room!
   IMAP
With IMAP the mail stays in the mailbox until you delete it permenently,
    but once it is deleted it has moved out of the main part of the huge mailbox into the trash can in the room of the huge mailbox (the trash folder settings decide when the trash gets taken out and deleted permenently) when deleted permenently it is no longer in the trash can in the huge mailbox it has been taken out the the dump.
If you read it then it's like opening the mail but leaving it in the huge mailbox.
If you move it to another folder then it's like moving it to the desk in the room but still in the mailbox.
   POP
With POP the mail is taken out of the mailbox and moved to the computer (in the other room)
Once you request/download your mail it is taken off of the server and whatever is done with the mail the server no longer has access to it
If you read it (or move it to a folder) it is the same thing as Mom taking the mail out of the huge mailbox and putting it in the car, if Dad checks the mailbox the mail may have been delivered by Dad is not going to find it because it is no longer in the mailbox it is with Mom in the car.

Finally, as promised, work around for your email:
    If you only have access to a POP email account and it won't work on your iPhone or want it to act like an IMAP account, then follow these steps~
1)   Get a free IMAP email account (using Gmail for this example)
2) Sign in to your Gmail account
3) Click the gear icon in the upper-right
4) Select Gmail settings
5) Select the Accounts and Import tab
6) Under Send mail as, click Add another email address
7) In the 'Email address' field, Enter your name and alternate email address (ie the POP address)
8) Choose use Gmail's servers to send your mail
9) Click Next Step>>
10) Click Send Verification
             (Gmail will send a verification message to your alternate email address to confirm that you own it)
11) Open your other account and click the link in the message Gmail sent
12) Add your new Gmail account to your iphone
You will be able to send, receive, reply, forward, delete, and manage folders of your other address through your Gmail address on your phone and it will appear to the recipients as though it came from your other address.

Allan, I have run into questions in this area recently since I got my iPhone. I have a long time Charter ISP POP email account which I've accessed with Apple Mail. This has worked fine. I also have a Yahoo web based account which I've also used separately.
Now when I set up my Yahoo account on my iPhone it worked great. But when I set up the Charter account it resulted in an IMAP account with incoming and outgoing servers being mobile.charter.net. Charter website implies that all email accounts on all mobile devices must be set up like this. My question is whether I can, or should, try to set up the account manually as a POP on my iPhone so it will behave similarly to the Charter POP account in my iMac?
I've run into some conflicts after using my iPhone to access my Charter email. My inbox on my desktop iMac in Apple Mail will give me the message that another client is accessing the email account when I try to get new mail soon after my iPhone has been accessing the Charter account. I've wondered whether this is a conflict between IMAP and POP?

Bundle export/import questions and work arounds

Hello,
I've begun to use bundles to migrate components from our test server to our production server. Bundles are a great feature which i missed the last time i worked with N1SPS a few years back. But i've found a few things that i had to work around.
1. It would be very nice to be able to set version to something like "latest" in the bundle, so i always get the latest version of all components when i do an export.
2. The bundle should be able to export in a certain order, first folder then components, then containers and lastly plans. Today i have to add everything to the bundle in this order or change the XML-file in the jar afterwards. A function to change the order in the bundle would also help.
3. Then the bundle is imported the container reefers to components of version 1.1 for some reason (in this case a directory), but it will import that component to version 1.0? I had to change the version reference in the XML to get this to work.
Any workaround or is it all RFE:s and bugfixes?

Capture Problem, not working

I have a Sony VX2000 and a Sony HC40 capture camera and neither of them will capture with FCP anymore. I can capture in iMovie fine, but when I try to in FCP, I can control the camera with pause, play, and those controls, but the image doesn't show up in the capture window. I have tried to capture just by looking at my camera and at the right time pressing capture at the time I want it to, but then the program just crashes. The weirdest part is that it just started happening, the day before it started I captured a whole bunch of clips, but the next day it just stopped working. If anyone can please help, that would be awesome!

Download FCP Rescue run it and delete all FCP preferences. This will reset FCP but will also reset the scratch disk so beforehand move the Capture scratch, Render files etc folders to a safe location. Upon setting up FCP again replace the newly created folders in the scratch disk with the old ones. If your are using ftp you will need FCP Rescue 6, which you can download from here.

Strange Capture Problem

I upgraded to Final Cut studio recently, and every now and then when I capture my first clip I have a problem. It says it's capturing the footage and completes the capture successfully then when I click the finish button all of a sudden the clip in the browser is only like 17seconds or so long. Then when i look at the clip in the hard drive it says that the size of the clip is as big as what I was suppose to capture. So the clip must be there but when I click on it to open it in Quicktime it is only a few seconds long.??? Help Please.

Sounds like something in your work flow is failing to "finalize" the file capture. QT is very fussy about both its timecode (for synchronization of tracks) and the proper termination of the file itself. QT application will not normally open an "open-ended" file. Without proper termination QT does not know the file size/length nor does it consider the file to be valid.

File download dialog box events and work around

Hi all,
I have a amall problem.
when i set content type and header for downloading a file which is generated from the server i get a "file download dialog box" (open/save/cancel)
but the problem is i cannot capture the events i.e. if the client clicks 'cancel' since i cannot capture 'cancel' i cannot do some other modifications that need to be done when the file is not downloaded.
is there any way which i can track if the file is actully downloaded by the client or not??
Or is there any way i can just by pass this dialog box and get a "save as dialog box" which enables him to choose a location directly download to his hard drive.(In this case i ll get a javascript confirmation before actully creating the file)
i am using IE6SP1.

Just using JSP/HTML/Javascript code I don't think there is a way to do what you want. You might be able to do so using a Java Web Start application - like a download manager.

Very Strange iPhoto problem and lots of spinning beach balls!

Hi - been using iPhoto 08 since it came out. Never a problem. About a week ago things starting going weird. It would crash and I'd get the spinning beach ball a lot. This never happened ever. It got so bad I jumped on here, followed some advice and downloaded iphoto library manager. I rebuilt my library - no change. I would double click a photo to enlarge it and it would just stop with a spinning ball. Other programs worked fine, just iPhoto would ground to a halt. Then I noticed some pics I would double click to enlarge would be corrupt. Grey half way down or black completely? They use to be fine. So I got so frustrated that I reinstalled Leopard. Everything worked fine. I even downloaded a trial Lightroom and it worked fine too with a project of mine. Tonight I decided to test iPhoto and it is still playing up. My iMac is a 24 with all latest updates. 4 Gig ram. Hard drive has 250 gig available. my iPhoto library is on an external drive which has 140 gig available. Something went wrong in the last week or so. Is there a way to search out and find a corrupt file or whatever is causing my mac to struggle using iphoto? Thanks so very much for any help.

Have you tried to rebuild the library? Make a backup of it first and then launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select all the options.
If that doesn't clear up iPhoto's problems rebuild the library with iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be untouched for further attempts at fixing or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory .
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: iPhoto 8's (09) new option in the library rebuild pane, "Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" may make this tip obsolete. We'll know when users have occasion to use it and see if that's the case.

Burned Disk Image Won't Play on DVD Player and Work Around

Hi all,
I was having problem with DVD not being recognized on a regular, stand alone, set top DVD player. The program was created in iDVD6 and saved to disk image. Then I used Disk Utility to burn it and the resulting disc played on Mac but not regular player.
Knowing that the blank media was good from a previous Toast 7 burn, I used Toast 7's Video TS option to burn from the mounted disk image. This disc worked on regular player with one small difference. With multiple videos (in addition to chapter markers) on the DVD, fast forwarding past the end of one video would start the next one with Toast, whereas the disk image (played on the Mac) would return to DVD menu.
I never burned directly from iDVD 6, since the video conversion process took 7 - 11 hours, so I don't know if that would work or not.
I hope this is helpful to some and if anyone decides to buy Toast from Roxio directly, leaving the online cart page open for a minute or two will pop up a 10% off incentive to urge you to check out. That's as of a week or two ago.

I saw the responses on the page to opening and saving pdfs but it is cumbersome to shut down the function in Mozilla and work around it. Is there a fix coming?

Until the Firefox 23 update I had no difficulty opening or saving pdfs in Firefox, but since the most recent update (Firefox 23) I often get error messages about damaged files when I use the download button and try to open or save files. I've checked with another browser and they open or save fine. I've tried disabling the pdf but it is cumbersome. I am using MSWord 7 if that makes any difference. Is there a fix coming for this?

In order to change the default reader for PDF files (to not open PDF files with Firefox's internal PDF reader), follow these steps:
#Go to ''Tools'' > ''Options'' (or ''Firefox'' > ''Options'').
#In the Options window, select the ''Applications'' tab.
#In the ''Search'' field, type ''PDF''. You should find ''Portable Document Format (PDF)''.
#On the right handside you should find an ''Action'' column. Use that to select Adobe Reader Plugin for Netscape (or something similar). Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

Encore 5.1 Mac OX - First Impressions and Work Arounds

GOOD: The dynamic link between Encore and Photoshop is great. With minimum skill one can understand how Encore creates buttons and customize them in Photoshop ( Look at the Layers ). Editing back and forth between the two seems to work flawlessly. The "Distribute" objects command in Encore was very useful ... Why doesn't Photoshop have this command?
BAD: When building several menus, the guides are helpful, but there are no rulers / tick marks and the guides do not appear 'common' for aligning multiple menus for consistency. The "TV Safe" zone guide doesn't work with the "Snap" feature .. and disappears every time one changes menus.
GOOD: Copying buttons from one menu to the next places it in the same spot. Thank God.
BUG: Dragging multiple audio assets into the timeline only produces the first asset filling the full timeline. One must manually resize the timeline with the slider to see the other assets. This was a bug in Encore 5.0 and was never fixed.
BAD: The creation of Chapter Markers between assets is like trying to park a car in NYC. The Timeline "Guide" won't snap between assets and neither will the markers.
TIP: Set them the best you can ... Use Chapter Marker Index .. Double Click .. use Zoom Slider to widen Timeline nearly all the way .. drag Chapter Marker to get within a frame of separation of assets. ALSO: There is no Tab to Next / Previous Chapter shortcut .. and that really blows. The is a Go to Start / End ....
BAD: The Slideshow feature really chokes. I have a 12 Core Mac and it shouldn't take so long to move images ... Also, choosing options such as "Subtitles" are slow like Grandma.
TIP: If your going to change a option for several images in the Slideshow .. select all of the images first .. then click on the options. If you don't you will see hair grow and seasons come and go ... ALSO: To "Deselect" all the images .. click on the border between the images .. or you will never deselect them. Took me a while to find that one!!
HATE: The Build Progress shows NO info on how long the transcoding will take or how much Data is written.
CONCERNED: Doesn't look like my 12 Core Dual 2.9 GHZ is being utilized to it's potential. The Activity Monitor shows poor performance for Transcoding / Rebuilding Audio Tracks.
STILL TRYING:
Having a hard time replacing audio assets in a timeline.
