Strange error in SQL 2014 - is it a bug?

Hi everybody,
I was writing a query to help in a recent thread and then got a very strange error:
declare @dt date = CURRENT_TIMESTAMP;
select convert(varchar(10), 103, @dt);
Run this code in SQL 2014 and see if it works for you or not. In BOL I didn't find anything indicating that CONVERT is not going to work with DATE type. Can you point me to BOL explaining the problem or confirm it's a bug?
UPDATE. Same error in SQL 2012. Does it mean I can not use CONVERT function with DATE type or some styles are not available? If yes, which codes I can use and which I can not?
UPDATE 2. I tried a few different styles and I got the same error message every time. That's new to me, looks like DATE type is not supported by CONVERT function at all?

  • Strange error in sql*plus in a line with "&"

    Hi friends, this error is very strange:
    Open your SQL*PLUS.
    write this:
    DECLARE
    V_1 VARCHAR2(10);
    V_2 VARCHAR2(10);
    BEGIN
    V_1:=&var1;
    --V_2:=&var2;
    END;
    Why it ask me for a value to var2 ???????????
    Does it ignore the -- at the begining of the line
    (same result with /* */ )
    Thanks,
    Jose.

    It is not an error.
    There are two parsers here doing their thing. The SQL*Plus Parser. The Oracle (SQL and/or PL/SQL) parser.
    SQL*Plus reads a line at a time and processs it. It has no idea whether or a line is actually a comment line for SQL or PL/SQL. It however does see that the line contains a SQL*PLUS substitution variable called &var2. Thus it prompts for a value for this variable (as VERIFY is ON). It substitutes &var2 with the value that the user supplies.
    When the SQL*Plus parser encounters the end-of-block marker (the forward slash in this case), it transmits that block to the Oracle Server for execution. There the Oracle Server runs it through the PL/SQL or SQL parsers (depending on whether the block is SQL or anonymous PL/SQL).
    Nothing strange about it. Nothing wrong with it.

  • Ask about an Error in SQL 2014

    Hi all,
    I got an error in SSIS package when I upgraded from Sql server 2008 to 2014 as below
    I have a format file with "Text qualifier" is "||" and "Column dilimiter" is "|" as below data example and it run well in SSIS 2008. But I got an error after I upgraded to Sql server to 2014 because SSIS 2014 did not
    know this kind of format. Is this a bug for new Sql 2014?
    As I know, some first releases of Sql server 2008 also had this error and then it's fixed after that. Now, it happen again in new release of Sql server 2014. Is there any fix for that?
    Error: "[SSIS.Pipeline] Error: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_PRIMEOUTPUTFAILED.  The PrimeOutput method on MediaType returned error code 0xC0202091.  The component returned a failure code when the pipeline engine called PrimeOutput(). The meaning
    of the failure code is defined by the component, but the error is fatal and the pipeline stopped executing.  There may be error messages posted before this with more information about the failure."
    Example data:
    ||MediaTypeID|||||MediaTypeCode||
    ||xxx|||||yyy||
    ||ccc|||||zzz||
    Thanks all.

    Hi khoana,
    Based on my research, the issue is caused by the Column Delimiter gets first preference and then Text Qualifier. So the values would be parsed as 10 columns based on the Column Delimiter, lack of Text Qualifier cause the issue. This is by design in SQL Server
    2014.
    Personally, I recommend you that submit the requirement at
    https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/. If the requirement mentioned by customers for many times, the product team may consider to add this feature in the next SQL Server version. Your feedback is valuable for us to improve our products and increase
    the level of service provided.

    Hi Kiran,
    Can you please share the list of environment variables to be set? It'd be helpful if you can post a snapshot of those variables in your environment, cause I'm struggling to by-pass this assertion error.

  • Error in converting SQL 2014 Trial to Full version using VLKey

    Hi,
    I am currently trying to upgrade my SQL 2014 evaluation version to the full version.
    I have purchased a Volume License for SQL Server 2014 Server/CAL and have extracted the product key from the ISO File.
    I have verified this product key with the product activation department and it is confirmed that it is a valid product key "ProdKey3 SQL Svr Standard Edtn 2014 00204 PA/BP VL:GVLK Pre Pidded"
    However, when i input the product key in to the server, it is showing me the error message:
    The SQL product key is not valid, enter key from certificate of authenticity or SQL server packaging
    Checked on the version of the evaluation and this is the edition - Microsoft SQL Server 2014.0120.2000.08
    The site that I am activating the server on does not have any internet connection, does this affect the activation?
    Would there be an alternate phone activation method for converting to Trial to Full?
    Kindly Assist. Thank you.

    Hi Julian,
    Firstly, according to the error message, please ensure that your SQL Server installation file is not corrupt, and make sure you use corresponding license key matched the edition and version of SQL Server. For more details about the error, please review the
    similar
    thread.
    Secondly, in addition to Ed’s post, you can also use the following command lines to upgrade SQL Server 2014 Trial to a full version.
    Setup.exe /q /ACTION=editionupgrade /INSTANCENAME=<MSSQLSERVER or instancename> /PID=<PID key for new edition>" /IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS
    Thirdly, for more detailed information regarding to the license issue, please call

  • Export to Excel Error in SQL Server 2014 Report Builder/Viewer

    Hi,
    I am using the 2014 version of ReportViewer in a WinForm to display an RDL report.
    The report was originally created in Report Builder 2.0 (SQL 2008 R2), but has since been edited in Report Builder 3.0 (SQL 2014).
    The report loads and displays OK, and even exports to Word and PDF. But when exporting to Excel and then opening the Excel document, the following error occurs:
    "We found a problem with some content in <filename>. Do you want us to try and recover as much as we can? If you trust the source of this workbook, click Yes."
    If you click Yes, then a second message appears:
    "Removed Part: /xl/styles.xml part.  (Styles)
    Repaired Records: Cell information from /xl/worksheets/sheet1.xml part"
    The Excel document then opens, and the data is there, but there is no formatting (no border columns, colours, bolds etc.)
    The three interesting things are:
    - When exported from SQL 2008 R2 Report Builder 3.0, which exports to .xsl instead of .xslx, it works
    - A brand new report created in 2014 Report Builder 3.0 exports to .xslx great
    - In Report Builder 2014, I stripped everything back and removed all rows and columns so the original table in the report only has one empty row and column it the export still errors - it is only by removing the original table and creating a brand new table
    that export works OK
    It appears to be a problem with the tablix, but ideally we don't want to have to recreate our reports from scratch to fix this issue.
    Has anyone come across an issue like this before, and know of any potential resolutions to it?
    Thank you.

    Hello,
    Based on your description, you render a report originally created in Report Builder 2.0 (SQL 2008 R2) and export the report to excel with format of Excel 2007-2010.
    Edit the report in Report Builder will not upgrader the report. In that case the report still with SSRS 2008 R2 RDL schema. Please try to upgrade the report by open the report in Report Designer in SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT) and then try again.
    If you don’t want to upgrade the report, please try to export the report
    with Excel 2003 rendering extension and check if the issue persists.
    The SQL Server 2014 and SQL Server 2012 Reporting Services Excel rendering extension renders a report to the native format of Microsoft Excel 2007-2010 with .xlsx as file extension. Only the Excel rendering extension is available by default.
    You must update the Reporting Services configuration files to make the Excel 2003 rendering extension available.
    For example, changing the value of Visible to
    true in the following line in the RSReportServer.config:
    <Extension Name="EXCEL" Type="Microsoft.ReportingServices.Rendering.ExcelRenderer.ExcelRenderer,Microsoft.ReportingServices.ExcelRendering"
    Visible="true"/>

  • SQL query has strange behavior on sql server 2014

    Hi All,
    I have a very weird situation where a front end entity framework query (cannot be modified easily) made up of SQL views that are used in subquery format. It generally runs within few seconds but there are times in the day when query just keep on going and
    sometimes start spitting results very slowly and at other times no result but keep on executing. Sysprocesses table shows sos_scheduler_yield wait type when query is running and not returning results. This behavior started on the query since the database was
    upgraded (migrated) from sql 2005 clustered enterprise instance to a new 2014 Enterprise clustered instance on a very powerful server.  This query is used by a batch process and what I have found that if we rebuild indexes on the database (takes
    only 2 mins) , the query appears to be returning results as expected. No other solution is working at the moment. The query had no issue on older sql 2005 instance and I have tested it their a few times. I am assuming it is a SQL 2014 related issue and found
    a fix on CU 5 for sos_scheduler_yield but it has not fixed the issue. At this point SQL 2014 is on latest CU 6 as of last week and index rebuilt wis the only viable work around to get the query going without interruption.
    Has anyone faced this issue on SQl 2014 or have some suggestions I can try. I can reproduce this error on at least two instances on SQL 2014. I have even tried setting max dop at server level to 1 and at half the total processors cores but to no avail. There
    is a 750GB memory on the box.
    Thanks
    dba60
    dba60

    First of all, SOS_SCHEDULER_YIELD has nothing to do with the query as such. SQL Server has a co-operative operating system, which means that processes voluntary yields to permit other threads to executes. This sends them to the wait state SOS_SCHEDULER_YIELD.
    If there is no other process executing, they are directly back in the game.
    The problems with your query is most likely to be an issue with the query plan. It is not uncommon to see plan changes when you move from one version of SQL Server to another because of changes in the optimizer.
    As Satish says, SQL 2014 has a new cardinality estimator (CE), which certainly can change the game. Check the compatibility level of the database. If the compat level is 120, you are using the new CE, else you are using the old one.
    If the level is 120, the first check is to change it to 110 to see if this has any effect.
    But in the end you will have to work more with the query. Analyse it to see if it can be improved by adding indexes. You say said that this query generated by Entity Framework. Unfortunately, this is an indiciation of that the query is not the best and could
    serve from a rewrite.
    The ultimate rescue would be to freeze the plan when it runs well. I have some text about this here:

  • SQL 2014 cluster installation on mounting point disks error: Updating permission setting for file

    Dear all,
    I am attempting to install SQL 2014 fail over cluster under a physical windows 2012 R2 server which have mounting point disks.
    At the finish of setup I get the following error message.
    Could you please help me on this?
    Thanks
    The following error has occurred:

    For help, click: go.microsoft.com/fwlink
    I am using an administrator account which have all security rights (cheched on secpol.msc mmc) needed for installation.

    Hi Marco_Ben_IT,
    Do not install SQL Server to the root directory of a mount point, setup fails when the root of a mounted volume is chosen for the data file directory, we must always specify
    a subdirectory for all files. This has to do with how permissions are granted. If you must put files in the root of the mount point you must manually manage the ACLs/permissions. We need to create a subfolder under the root of the mount point, and install
    there.

  • The dreaded: The network address is invalid error - SQL 2014 Cluster on Server 2012 R2

    Trying to setup an SQL 2014 Failover cluster on Windows Server 2012 R2 (two nodes). Every time I get to the assign a SQL server Network Name piece of the setup I get the following error message:
    The given network name is unusable because there was a failure trying to determine if the network name is valid for use by the clustered SQL instance due to the following error: 'The network address is invalid.'
    This happens whether I use the Advanced cluster installation procedures or the normal installation.  I have tried the following based on anything I can find on the web:
    1) Removed the clustered MTDTC role.
    2) Deleted the NIC Team (4 1GB NICs).  Deleted all but 1 NIC from the server device manager.
    3) Shutdown the second node.
    4) Lanman Server registry change posted someplace on this forum that does not stick on reboot
    None of the above, separately or in combination, has worked to allow SQL 2014 to be installed as a cluster role.
    There is no virtual machines added to the cluster.  This is not a VMware installation.  It is straight Windows 2012 R2 with a two node cluster (setup identically).
    Any ideas, suggestions, comments?
    Thanks,
    -Andrew

    Hi Alberto and Lydia,
    The cluster was verified, there are only warnings related to a lack of redundant network paths as the cluster verification doesn't recognize a team of 4 nics are redundant.  I updated AD to include the permissions detailed in the link Lydia provided,
    still no go.

  • Strange error while executing a stored procedure: Incorrect syntax near '@p0'

    All, I am getting a strange error while executing a stored procedure: Incorrect syntax near '@p0'  using JDBC CallableStatment.
    Here is my code...
    CallableStatement cStmt = con.prepareCall("{call SET CHAINED ON EXEC <dbName>.<schemaName>.<SPName> (?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?)}");

    NOTE: I don't work with JDBC/jConnect so (at this point) just some questions ...
    1 - are you sending this to ASE, ASA, IQ, or some other RDBMS?
    2 - what is the value of <schemaname>?
    3 - do you have other prepareCall() instances that successfully call a stored proc? [would be interesting to see if there's a difference in the format of the calls]
    A quick google search shows a couple ways to submit a stored proc execution to the RDBMS, with the format depending on the format expected by the target RDBMS.
    I'm wondering if you really need/want the parentheses around the argument list, ie, what happens if you change
    from
    -- parentheses around args
    EXEC <dbName>.<schemaName>.<SPName> ( ?,?,?,?,?,...,? )
    to
    -- no parentheses around args
    EXEC <dbName>.<schemaName>.<SPName> ?,?,?,?,?,...,?
    In ASE if I wrap the parameters in parentheses I get the same error you're getting:
    ================== w/ parentheses => error
    1> sp_who (sa)
    2> go
    Msg 102, Level 15, State 1:
    Server 'CC1_V1', Line 1:
    Incorrect syntax near 'sa'.   <<=== sa == @p0 ??
    ================== w/out parentheses => works
    1> sp_who sa
    2> go
    fid spid status  loginame origname ...
       0   17 running sa       sa       ...

  • SQL 2014 - Cumulative Update 2 and/or 3 break Master Data Services

    Hi,
    Strange issue, but I'll try to lay it out as clearly as possible.
    If we apply CU #2 or #3 on a licensed SQL 2014 Entr. installation, we can't get MDS working. We receive the "The current SQL Server edition is not supported by MDS" error.
    If we do the same, but use the downloaded trial isntaller from the Microsoft site as base for our installation, everything works fine.
    If we again use that trial install software, but instead of choosing trial, we enter our product key from above, again MDS results in the beforementioned error.
    So to wrap up:
    Install SQL 2014 with licensed software + CU #2 or #3 --> MSD won't work (The current SQL Server edition is not supported by MDS)
    Install SQL 2014 with a downloaded trial installer + apply CU#2 or #3 --> MDS works
    Install SQL 2014 with a downloaded trial installer, BUT enter our Product Key + apply CU#2 or #3 --> MSD won't work (The current SQL Server edition is not supported by MDS)
    Why do we need CU #3? Our MDS database will reside on another server with a named instance. Apparently #CU 3 is needed if we want this setup to work.
    But what startles me the most is the fact that I have no problem at all when installing SQL 2014 as a trial, but everything breaks if I install SQL 2014 with a Product Key.
    Regards
    Tony

  • (BUG??) Team Foundation Server 2013 Update 4 Support for SQL 2014

    Scenario: On Windows 2012 R2 x64 I have installed SQL, Reporting Services & AS 2014 (applied all updates through Windows Update), SharePoint 2013 Foundation, and installed Team Foundation Server 2013 RTM (did not configure).
    Before configuring TFS, I applied Update 4 to the server (not update 1,2 or 3 directly). When trying to configure I get the following error:
    ==========================
    TF255146: Team Foundation Server requires SQL Server 2012 SP1 (11.00.3000) or greater. The SQL Server instance you supplied is version 12.0.2254.0.
    TF400403: The Report Server instance specified is version 12.0.2254.0, the minimum supported version is 11.0.3000.
    TF400070: A required version of a component is not installed on the application tier. You must exit the Team Foundation Administration Console and install a supported version of either SQL Server Analysis Services of the SQL Server Client Tools on the application
    tier to ensure that the Analysis Services object model is present for warehouse processing.
    ====================================
    My understanding is that as of Update 2 (or was it 3) that SQL 2014 was supported. However it appears if that particular update is not installed directly it bypasses the check. Can someone verify I am seeing the intended result or is this a bug?

  • Strange error with xml publisher

    I was testing sub-templates on a clone of our production environment and encountered a strange error. When I run the concurrent program I get an xml publisher error and then when I do a preview in xml publisher I also get an error. These are the exact same templates that are running on are training environment with out any issue. I put an SR in with oracle and they asked me to check the status of patches. We looked at the patches on all environments and they are exactly the same. We are running Xml publisher 5.6.2., with that said oracle still thinks it has to do with a patch and have told our DBA that he needs to apply a patch for xml publisher 5.6.3 When we applied this patch it broke the two test environments that it was tested on we are still waiting for oracle to get back with use on this issue. I really do not believe it is a patch error since it works on training and the there is no difference between the patch history on training and the other environments. I am including the two errors and the templates, if you have the time and could look at the errors may be you can see what is going on. The first error is from the xml publisher preview and an the second is from the concurrent program.
    Thank You,
    Russell E Cowan

    Hi
    the error in the CM log is caused by the java code not being able to find the template file in the template manager. Please ensure the main and subtemplates are loaded to the instance correctly.
    I think the first error is similar just a little more cryptic.

  • Strange error while creating form/report pages [ORA-20001]

    While creating two new pages with a form and report on it, I've got a strange error. I tried to create the pages several times, but I always got the same error:
    ORA-20001: Unable to create query and update page. ORA-20001: Unable to create form on table. ORA-20001: Error creating shortcut id="" ORA-00001: unique constraint (FLOWS_030000.WWV_FLOW_SHORTCUT_IDX1) violated
    Error creating query and update.
    Return to application.
    I'm using the wizard to get the pages, like I did many times before (without problems), but this time it will not work!

    Hi,
    For above error the error code is 2 which means system cannot find the file specified. It is saying it is unable to write at location which means SQL server account does not have access to
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log\20140920_074907\Registry_SOFTWARE_Microsoft_MSSQLServer.reg_
    You can manually go to the location and add required rights may be installable is corrupt
    Now did you ran SQL server setup as administrator. Always right click on setup.exe file and select run as administrator.
    Please make sure you disable antivirus running on machine. Also if you have any registry scanner software which scans registry remove it as well.
