Strange goings on with the intel iMac

Ive been having a few glitches with my brand new iMac which I had only today. for one it was crashing when I clicked the date & time section of system preferences but now one of the icons has gone horribly wrong. On another note can anyone direct me to where I can get a plugin for quicktime 7 to play avi files.
see here for what I mean: http://www.applegateplus.com/help.png

What was your experience with the machine "out of the box?" Meaning, did you simply boot up the machine and play around, or otherwise did you do some sort of mass migration of files and folders from you previous Mac?
I noticed Deja Vu in your system prefs - makes me think you did a migration of some sort.
Let us know...
P.S. - as for the QT plug-in, you'll find the DivX codec for intel mac will assist you in getting your QT Player to see those pesky avi files:

  • What usb keyboards are compatible with the Intel iMac

Please can someone tell me what USB Apple Keybouards are compatable with the intel Imac
    howard

Some PC keyboards may not work with the Mac. Especially, specialty gaming keyboards will not work with Macs and OS X.  Some PC keyboards are designed to specifically work with newer versions of Windows at that's it!
They may not even work as a basic keyboard, but not entirely sure.
I know for a fact specialty gaming keyboards do not work at all on a Mac because there have been posts here from gamers who tried to use special gaming keyboards and mice and they would not function on a Mac.
If you know anyone with a Mac, ask them if they have a spare Mac keyboard you can try before buying.
    Good Luck!

  • Is there a Window's Media Player download compatible with the INTEL iMacs?

I tried downloading MWP for Mac OSX and the file name was Windows Media.sitx and I couldnt do anything with that. I also tried downloading Windows Media Components for quicktime but it said it wasnt compatible with intel Macs.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    iMac G5 Intel Core Duo, 1.83GHz, 1GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Although Microsoft no longer supports it, WMV9 for OSX works on the intel machine, running under Rosetta. That .sitx file you download can be uncompressed with the free Stuffit Expander for intel:
    http://www.stuffit.com/mac/expander/universalbeta.html
Or re-download the WM Player as a .bin file from MS directly:
    http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx?pid=download&location=/mac/download/ misc/winmp_osx.xml&secid=80&ssid=8&flgnosysreq=True
Alternatively, you can download the Popwire components for intel Mac, which allow WMV files to play in native Quicktime (7.0.4 and below only) or Flip4Mac, which will do the same, although only by running your Quicktime Player in Rosetta, as F4M has not released a universal version as of yet.

  • Which Mouse Works With the Intel iMac?

My Microsoft mouse will not enable me to program the buttons on the new iMac.
I am aware that STEERMOUSE shareware will do the job for $20. But have any mouse manufacturers upgraded their drivers to the new Universal binary format?

Download SteerMouse; you get to use it for 30 days for free, by which time maybe Logitech or Kensington will have released Universal Binaries for their mice. But I bet by then you'll be happy glad and pleased to pony up the $20. If not just wait a decade or two for MS to come up with a programmable mouse driver for MacIntels: they can't manage to update Windows in a timely fashion, much less write drivers for the competition.

  • Sims 2 and other games on the intel imac?

Hi there just bought the Imac and am new at all this stuff. My girlfriend wanted to get Sims 2 , and i wanted to first check if it will run ok on the Imac with the intel processor?
    thanks!
    a

It not only runs (many legacy programs ran under Rosetta).
But with this upgrade, it runs under Intel on the Mac natively.

  • How Do The Intel iMacs Handle HandBrake?

I've currently got a G4 1.33ghz Powerbook, and while I love it, it doesn't seem to have the power I need for harder stuff, like running HandBrake. I've been thinking of getting an iMac because a newer desktop ought to be a lot faster than what I have now. And I know that a new Universal version of HandBrake has just come out, so no more Rosetta.
My question is: how much of a performance increase would I see moving up from my Powerbook to a new Intel iMac when using HandBrake? Would it be a substantial one?
And anyone who has an Intel iMac and has/had an older G4 Powerbook, I'd love to hear your comments on the difference of perfomance.
    1.33 GHz 12" PowerBook G4 1.25GB ram "ANTIGEN" | iPod Photo 60 GB "ENZYME"   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I have no expeience with PPC macs as the intel iMac is my first Apple.
I must say the whole process of ripping DVDs with Handbrake is much easier. No more multi-step processes and much faster. My "old" PC was a 3G P4 with 1G RAM and it was not as fast as the iMac.
I have already ripped all my daughters movies onto the machine and can call them up at will with front row. Given she changes her mind every half an hour this is a God send

  • About the extended desktop on the Intel iMac?

Hi I was looking into getting the 17" Intel iMac, but after looking at the 20" G5 iMac, I think I want the 20" Intel iMac. I wanted to know what size external display can you use with the 17" & 20" Intel iMac as a extended desktop? I was told the reason that I only can use up to 20" external display with my 12" PowerBook was the graphics card in it. I think you can get 128 MB and 256 MB with a Intel iMac? what size display can I use with this type of card?
I want to put a 23" or a 26" LCD TV on the 20" Intel iMac if you can? Hoping to use a 26", but 23" is OK too.
Thank you for all your help!
    12" PowerBook G4 1.5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Thank you for yor help.
I have one more question to ask? If I use the LCD TV like Sony or Samsung with the New i-Mac will I loose deskspace on the LCD TV due to the low resolution on the LCD TV? I thought the LCD TV was a good idea since it has all the input for all my DVD player, TV box?, Nintendo, and the VHS?, but I was told that LCD TV might not be too compatible for use with a computer.
How do I put all my stuff on a Apple 23" LCD display I only can find adapters that can only take one peripheral at a time, and I don't want to re plug a TV box each time I want to watch TV. It looks like I need a box for use with Apple display with 3~4 input and S video, and HDMI input for the HD stuff?
Again thank you for all your help.

  • Do these programs run on the Intel Imacs

I wanna get the intel imacs, but i just wanna know if these programs will work on them.
-Photoshop cs2 or the entire creative suite
    -Dreamweaver
    -Micorsoft office suite
    -Flash 8
    -Firefox

There's a special Flash plug-in supplied with the Intel-Macs because the distribution version of Flash is not Intel-Mac compatible. The other programs will all run via Rosetta. There is a universal-binary version of Firefox (it's not the standard Firefox distribution, rather a Deer Park variant.)
Read my user tip on migrating:
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3 or G4 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers. These versions are not universal binaries and will not work on Intel-Macs. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the only current choice is USB Overdrive. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior (does not work), TechTool Pro (does not work), SuperDuper (newest release works), and Drive Genius (untested) may not work properly on Intel-Macs. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

  • Canon Optura 600 - work with the Intel Core Duo?

I am thinking of investing in a Canon Optura 600 miniDV camcorder. Does anyone know if this will be compatible or not with the new intel range?
I am planning on buying the 20" iMac later this year, when more software has been ported over, but I want to buy a miniDV camcorder at the moment.
Does anyone know if this model is compatible?
    Thanks in advance guys!!!
    sunomata.

I have a Canon Optura 400, and it works just fine
with my iMac G5. I see no reason why anything in the
Optura line would not work with the new iMac. I was
at the Apple Store at the Mall of America the other
day, and they were giving a demonstration of the new
iMac (specifically iLife 06), and the presenter was
demonstrating the use of a Canon MiniDV camera with
iMovie. I did not notice which model she was using,
but suffice it to say that Canon has an excellent
reputation of working well within a Mac environment.
    Thanks very much!
How do you rate the Optura 400 as a camcorder?
Do you recommend me buying it?
I have had my eye on it for a while now and was wondering if that was the best of the affordable Canon range.
I think I will buy it now, but I was wondering what your thoughts on your camcorder are. Pros? Cons?
    Thanks again,
    sunomata.

  • A few Questions about the intel iMac

    Hello,
I have just ordered the 1.83ghz 17" intel imac.
I have bought the imac to replace my PowerMac G5 Dual 1.8 as its getting tired and falling apart now (nearly 3 years old) no apple care on it
I Have upgraded it with 2gb Ram.
My question is, i use the desktop mac i have for music using Logic Pro 7 and GarageBand, i have found GarageBand to be slow on my PowerMac G5 would the intel IMac be man/women (not trying to be sexest) for the job?
ie would it be the same power / more powerful than my G5?
    Thanks for any advice.
    Stuart
Ps Sorry if this has been asked about 1000 times, i did do a search and couldn't find the answers i was looking for, but if there is a thread about it please could you be kind enough to reply with the link.

Out of my personal experience, In School I use the Dual 2.0 GHZ G5 with 1GB of ram and I am using at home the 17inch 1.83 Intel iMac with 1GB or ram as well and seeing a big render difference with the iMac compared to the Dual G5. The only thing that ***** but will be solved soon is using non-universal software yet. Rosetta works and you get the job done but you dont see a speed difference using the power PC apps. Anything Universal is really really fast and I am satisfied with the increase of performance.

  • How stable is Firefox 3 on the intel iMac ?

OK, the new iMac has arrived to replace the G4 that died !
My wife likes Firefox as a browser rather than Safari but how stable is Firefox 3 on the intel iMac, as my older macbook did not like it and I reverted back to Firefox 2 ?
    Cheers
    4jbl7

There are no issues whatsoever with Firefox on the new Intel iMac. I have had mine about a year without one issue... in fact... I have had Safari freeze up twice and never any issue with Firefox. That was one of the first apps I loaded when I got mine.
    Enjoy!!!
    Cheers,
    Ronnie

  • How Can i connect using Thunderbolt a Macbook Pro with the New iMac

I bought the new Macbook Pro with Thunderbolt and instead of buying a new external monitor, i am thinking that the new iMac with Thunderbolt is a great idea.
Is there a cable to connect the Macbook Pro and use as iMac as external monitor, using Thunderbolt.
    thanks

I understood your question perfectly and the answer is absolutely yes. When you change the iMac into target display mode you underlying operating system continues to run all existing applications. For example in my case if I finished editing some video and am about to enter a lengthy render process or something which may draw lots of resources like hand real, I set it to start on the iMac and then switch it to target display mode to use it as a monitor with my MacBook air in the meantime.
Only one small caveat in your case though.  Since the target display mode is a feature of OSX (eg the OS interprets the special key stroke and changes the iMac into target display mode) you should make sure Lion server supports the target display mode feature. I don't see a reason why it wouldn't but that's the only thing currently crossing my mind. Keep in mind the compatibilities between ports as noted in my blog. If any of your machines have mini display port and you intend to connect the new iMac in target display mode you will run into issues. In that special scenario, I recommend buying a refurb iMac from 2010 which urtilize the displayport allowing you to use it as a display for all your macs -- those with thunderbolt as well as those with displayport. If you have thunderbolts then definitely go with the thunderbolt iMac.

  • Right, MacBook Pro 17" early 2011(Built March) and my new OCZ sata III 6G not working, when is Apple going to admit there is a problem with the Intel's 6 Series Chipset. In System Information it says "Link Speed: 6 Gigabit" which is sata III.

My MacBook Pro 17" early 2011(built March) and my new OCZ sata III 6G are not working together, when is Apple going to admit there is a problem with the Intel's 6 Series Chipset. In System Information it says "Link Speed: 6 Gigabit" which is sata III and in my MacBook Pro it does not work.
Now MacBook Pro 17" early 2011 built May onward do not have this problem it was fixed in the Intel's 6 Series Chipset. (So there is a problem). Cam I have my MacBook Pro fixed please.

After biting the bullet and ordering more RAM, my computer now is working a ton better. So that must have been the main issue. With 8 GB RAM, I can now even run Parallels fluidly (better than my work PC!) where before simple things like logging in to my MBP after reboot could take forever.
The place I went to had several other people getting RAM upgrades at the same time as me, so between this and other comments I've seen in discussions here and elsewhere on the Internets, I take it to mean that either Apple should bump up the base RAM on its new machines, and/or stop charging so much for additional RAM.
I refused to believe a Pro machine bought with Lion installed would come with too little RAM for light to medium usage, but it was apparently the case. I'll mark this as a correct answer and hope some other poor soul will come across this thread and be helped by it.

  • The Brightness Gradient Issue DOES EXIST With The 24" iMacs.

Four years ago I bought a hefty G4 eMac and a few months later the G5 iMac was introduced.
I was impressed and vowed I would get one the following year, but as each new version was introduced I put it off, waiting for an even better model.
I spend most of my time on the FCE forum but regularly visited this one to read about the various problems people were experiencing.
The G5s were prone to overheating, dead or stuck pixels have always been around, and latterly with the aluminium iMacs we have had the gradient issues.
All my life I have gone for the cheapest item that would do the job, but with the introduction of this latest version I decided to get the "best".
I bought it last Wednesday and was duly impressed.
To my relief it appeared to run cool and the screen did not seem to have any of the problems I had read about ........... though I did not examine it minutely.
Suddenly, yesterday (Sunday) I noticed that the "wallpaper" photo on the screen looked distinctly brighter on the left.
I put a uniform grey card on and there was no doubt ! I altered backgrounds and even moved my head to view from numerous (unnatural!) angles but the left side was undoubtedly brighter.
Writing this letter, the difference is very obvious.
What is more I don't need to test the whole monitor. Viewing a photo that is less than half the screen's width shows a brighter left side.
This leaves me with 2 questions which now I can never definitely resolve :-
    1. Has the screen been like this for the past 4 days and has my vision suddenly become more discriminating ?
    OR
    2. Has the screen suddenly deteriorated (and will it continue to deteriorate) ?
I have a nasty feeling it could be number 2 as I had looked at identical pictures in two windows of FCP (side by side), a couple of days ago, and noted that they were of equal brightness! Not so now.
I mainly use FCE/FCP and Photoshop, but being an amateur, I am not too fussy about the exact shade of a colour. So long as what I am watching is bright and sharp, I am usually content.
However, I must say that my current emotion is one of disappointment.
    Ian.

    That's very comforting George.
As you can guess, I was expecting it but thought I had escaped !
