Strange IDE drive freezes after yestrday updates

I have an WD IDE disk attached to one ITE8212 RAID card. It's the only disk in that card so it doesn't work in RAID mode. Since yesterday's update I noticed that when I try to write large amount of data (aprox. 4GB) in that disk after a while I get errors like

and after that the drive disappears. The /dev entries are still there but when I umount and mount that partition back again I can't see any files. When I reboot everything works again for a while and then the problem arises again.
Just for the sake of it I tried to transfer the drive to motherboard's IDE controller and I was able to copy 10GB of data with no problem so I don't think it's a bad drive or a bad cable.
Another thing I have noticed is that when the kernel loads I see messages like

This was happening since the first day I installed that card but since everything worked fine I didn't bother to investigate further.
I am using the beyond kernel but the same thing happens with stock kernel also.
Any idea on what could be wrong?

Ok, I finally found the solution and I post it here just in case someone else needs it.
That card has 2 different BIOS versions, one acts as a RAID controller and th other acts as an ATAPI controller. I bought it with the RAID version and since I used it with only one drive attached, there was no RAID to build. I flashed with the ATAPI version and it works OK now. I don't see the ugly messages I posted earlier and I copied 16GB of data without problems.
However now I am a little puzzled by this

Why does my system freeze after ever update from Firefox...and has gotten very slow

My computer freezes during or after every update that come in automatically recently. It has also gotten extremely slow at the same time.

Your setup looks like it should really fly.
Often when people have serious slowdowns like you mention, it comes down to one of two things:
a) Some problem with the user's account. One way to test if this is the case is to create a new admin user and try running FCP X from this new account. If the same projects that were slow behave well in this account you'll know that some setting, or cache, or login item, or whatnot in your own account is responsible.
b) Some problem with a plugin. If there is a plugin that you use all the time, and maybe was not updated for the current version, and can cause slowdowns, then maybe you think it is the machine. See what plugins you are using, and run a test project without them. Does it run as fast as it should?

Finder freezing after software updates and uninstalling

Help!!!
I updated iTunes,Safri and an secriuty enhancement as the automatic reminder, it hang up at disk optimizing(77% competed) after installation, I had to forcely shut down, then I uninstalled several unnecessary softwares.
Then the finder froze, I failed to open any software, the coloured cursor keeps rolling and rolling.
But the folder operation is functioning.
What should I do?

I don't have an answer to fix your problem unless you have your hard drive backed up onto another hard drive, but the answer would of course be obvious if this were the case.
I would like to point out that everybody that has a computer, laptop or desktop, should have their entire hard drive backed up onto another hard drive. It should be considered as a requirement, not a luxury.
Next, before ever installing a software update, you should run the "Repair Disk" function and also the Repair Permissions function of the Disk Utility app, from the install DVD. If there is corruption in your disk directory and you go ahead and install a software update, all manner of problems may arise.
I never let the software update Install automatically. I always download the update software, then do the preventive disk repair, permissions repair, then do a fresh backup of my entire hard drive, then run the update software's installer. Now if anything goes amiss, I am not out a thing, and I am in a good position to troubleshoot. So far I have never had any problems with any updates but this method will pretty much make sure that if you do ever have a problem you are not in any trouble. Just restore from your current, fresh backup.

HTC M8 lagging and freezing after Lollipop update

I've had this phone for about a year now with no problems. Ever since the update about 3 weeks ago, it is literally to the point where I hate using my phone. These are the problems I've been having:
- Takes several minutes to turn on.
- Some apps, eg. BBC News and ColorNote will take over 10 - 15 minutes to boot after my phone is turned on. The icons come up grey and when I press it, it will say the app is not installed.
- The phone runs SLOW. When I press the messages icon, it will take about 30 seconds for the text messages to even appear. After that I'll need to wait another 10 - 15 seconds when I press the name of the person to read their text message.
- Any kind of typing produces a very long lag. Text messages, internet, Google maps. Any time I type the phone freezes for several seconds, sometimes 10 or longer and then it will catch up with what I'm saying.
- The battery drains very quickly, even when I'm not using it and have closed all of my apps. The phone can be fully charged and an hour later it's at 60 - 70% even if I'm not using it. This has never happened. I used to be able to use it for a day at least before it needed charging. Now I'm carrying my charger everywhere and constantly plugging it in or else it'll be dead within hours.
These are the biggest problems I can think of. When I call Verizon I'm told I should try uninstalling apps and logging out of ones I'm not using like gmail etc. This has not helped. I've tried resetting but from what I'm seeing that isn't helping either. Is anyone else with the HTC M8 having any of these problems after the update??? Is there a way to go back to the previous version?

About all you can do once you take the update is to either run a System Cache Clear followed by another or Run back to back factory resets to make sure there isn't much left of the Last OS but I will add in doing a Factory reset it may or may not work but for now it's about the only thing that might work that is until something of a new update replaces the one that was just released..
I've told members before and it goes like this with anything if what your using is not broke or running oddly don't go out and change or try and fixit at least till you find some evidence that what your about Download or have Downloaded is fully functional I have not update my one M8 and until I know all issues have been minimized I won't

The iPod Freezes after Firmware Update 1.2

I just updated my ipod to the firmware version 1.2 and instantly after the update the ipod started to mal-function.
I hope to god this isnt going to become one of those issues that is overlooked by Apple.
If anyone has any suggestions, or ways to fix this or a similar problem, please do not hesitate to post.

I too had this happen to me. Ipod works great before update. I install itunes7 and update firmware and then it starts freezing during song/podcast or video playback. It has to be reset by holding Menu and center button. I tried a restore on it thinking it didn't update correctly. I re-synced by entire library (which takes a while). That didn't help. So I went back to 1.1.2 update
All I did was uninstall Itunes7 and then got the 06-28 update from the another site and installed and restored my ipod. Reinstalled intunes7 and unchecked update automatically. And re-sync all my library.
3 hours I will never get back. But my ipod works again.

After i update my iphone 4s to iOS6. my NBA2k12 is always freezing. is there any patch to fix this? i already try restarting my phone by pressing home key and sleep mode key at the same time for 10seconds until the apple logo appear. but still the app is not working.(keeps on freezing)

LENOVO 3000 G230 DVD DRIVE Gone After BIOS Update

Hi,
After I updated my bios with latest one from the website http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/en/DriversDownloads/drivers_show_2191.html, my DVD drive is gone, not just from windows but i cannot find it in the BIOS.
Pls any one give me BIOS update, prior to this? any help in making my DVD drive show up again.

PS: Prior to updating the bios i can still work with the DVD drive but after I applied the update and the system rebooted, my DVD drive is gone.

I have successed to find again my CD/DVD drive both in BIOS and Windows 7 by doing the following:
(1). Press F2 at "Lenovo" start up display to enter BIOS
(2). Go to "Main" (the place showing also Harddisk Drive) and enter F9 for Set Default.
(3). Go to "Boot" and enter F9 for Set Default
(4). Exit with save.
Hope the information is usefull for all.

Lots of crashing, freezing, and strange lines on screen after recent update

I dutifully update the software when asked and suddenly I have all the following symptoms. Any advice? Thanks!

1. A small line appears in some windows; it's multi-colored and about 3 pixels high. It goes away when I resize or play with the window.
2. My computer crashes more often when being woken up from sleeping by pressing the mouse button; I will press my mouse to wake up the computer and it just shuts off. This has happened for the past year but happens much more frequently this week after the recent update. I took it in to the apple store months ago and they could not repeat it. It happened 3x today.
3. A few programs have frozen / stopped responding, way too more frequently than normal.

Hi again Andy, I don't make it over here to Leo very often.
Here's what I'd try...
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
Leo clears a lot more caches than Tiger does in Safe boot.

Try reconnecting with App Store to see if there is yet another update available, if yes, update your mac to the latest Apple is offering at the moment.
As for slow downs and freezes, try these steps:
1. Run Disk Utility and Repair Permissions then verify / repair disk if needed.
2. Next Follow these steps:
Shut down your Mac.
Turn on the computer and immediately hold down Command (⌘), Option, P, and R keys simultaneously.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.
3. If all else fails download and run "Onyx" for Mountain Lion.

External hard drive problems after latest updates

I just did some updates (listed below) and now my external drive is having a few problems.
Updates installed:
- Security update 2015 002
- Remote Desktop Client Update 3.8.2 ver 1.1
- iTunes 12.1
- Canon Inkjet Printer Software 3.2
Problems:
- Double clicking on any file type leads to a 'can't find application' error, rather than it opening in the default program (i have tried it with several different file types)
- Can no long click option + drag to copy. I get error code -8058
Any idea which update might be causing this? I'm thinking security or remove desktop client? If so, is there any way to remove the update? I've searched and can't find how.

Try a restart.
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.

Freezing after software update

Hi all,
I have had an issue today after installing a couple of updates via software update. The first was the latest safari update, downloaded fine, installed, prompted to restart. Clicked the button and got a blue screen with the spinning gear (what's the official name for this icon??) and it got so far and just froze. Had to hard restart at which point it looked as if it installed the package again and then restarted again, all ok. The exact same thing just happened with the security update. Anyone else have this problem? I suspect not as I'm slowly starting to think it is the additional 8GB of ram I installed from OWC causing this. I have trouble doing a restart as it is, just gets stuck in a clicking cycle between the DVD drive and the HD. If i take out the OWC ram, it restarts just fine. When running apps however, it seems to perform great. I have run the AHT and I ran Rember for 1 cycle and it reports all as ok. Done the usual resets. Does anyone have any idea at all!!???! Cheers.
PS, sent OWC tech support an email some time ago and they have yet to respond. Funny really, seen as I got an email from customer service there asking me what I thought of there tech support service regarding my recent ticket!
Could it be the ram, or mixture of ram? The macpro restart (boots up fine, shuts down fine though with the extra ram) does exhibit a completely different behavior when removing the new ram modules, ie it functions normally. Any advice much appreciated.

Well, thanks for the replies all, much appreciated. I'm at a bit of a loss to tell you the truth. Before installing the additional ram, I had a scenario where my pro would just reboot after shutting down. On one occasion it did this 3 times in a row. I have since done a fresh Leopard instal and it has only done it once since then. I think it could well be worth running disk warrior as you have suggested many times hatter. The problem is, I've blown any available cash right now on the ram! I am simply curios as to why the mac pro exhibits odd restart behavior with the additional ram installed? I did add the extra ram after the fresh instal, so, as mentioned here in a reply, this takes the OS to a different state? 64bit? I may have got the wrong end of the stick, sorry if thats the case. Should, now I have the additional ram installed do a fresh installation? Does Leopard configure itself differently when it sees above 4GB? I do have numerous bits of hardware hooked up to the mac and I specifically purchased a sonnet firewire and usb card to cater for both, however I guess that means nothing if the software is causing a conflict. I know for a fact one of the units causes the user event agent to fail, but this has been fixed and I am eagerly awaiting the release of the updated software. As you have probably gathered by now, I'm clutching at straws. The most annoying thing for me is that I have always maintained a reliable computer and can generally trouble shoot and cure problems, but this has got me, for now. Please keep them coming, I'm willing to try anything within reason to get a stable mac pro!! Hatter, you mentioned ram temperatures. The ram seems to get incredibly hot, like, burn your fingers hot. Gx740 Screen and laptop freeze after vbios update

since i had some overheating issue i google and find the vbios update for the radeon hd5870 on the msi webpage
now since i have updated no game will play they all freeze as soon as i enter the game. in windows it freeze when i put video in full screen etc. as soon as the video card get load everything freeze and the sound loop for about 4-5 seconde.
i then did my homework and found on the forum many solution like flashing also the EC and bios. nothing worked
i then looked for the driver and did a clean driver install. didn't worked
so after a load of test i'm pretty sure the problem is the vbios (that i tryed to flash a second time to be sure it was not a error on the first update)
it there someone who have a old vbios for the gx740 vbios i'll test to downgrade it in order to see if that fix my problem
