Strange Leopard happenings

I have been having a lot of trouble since I installed Leopard onto the new 20" I-Mac I got at xmas.
Discovered that none of the programs show or will allow the creation of PDF files (Word etc.) even tho they all worked when the same computer was still running Tiger.
Also can't get a straight answer from Apple about a couple of oddities:
1- I tried to make a backup copy of the Leopard install DVD but it wouldn't work on there dift. computers at which point tech support told me that the disc was copy-protected which ***** if true. Then the tech I was talking to trying to solve the problems with no PDF files assured me that the disc could be copies , but I still can't get it to work.
I found that if I left my 5th generation video ipod connected the I-mac won't boot until I remove it from its cradle. Several Apple tech folk disagreed about this but now they claim that Ipods shouldn't be left plugged in when booting any Mac which seems very odd. BTW my old 3rd generation Ipod presents no problem for the computer and it bot fine with that ipod plugged in.
Anyone else experiencing these problems , and ae you also finding that Apples' tech people don't seem to know or agree on various problem with Leopard.

"tried to make a backup copy of the Leopard install DVD but it wouldn't work on there dift. computers..."
What does "dift. computers" mean? Did you purchase a retail copy of Leopard or is this one that came with the computer or an Up-to-date copy? Are you trying to use the backup on other computers?
Your 3rd Generation iPod was connected via firewire, the newer ones connect via USB which works differently. The only "workaround" is to disconnect it while the computer is off. There is a good reason to do this: if the computer goes to sleep or is turned off with the iPod connected it will not charge and may in fact deplete the battery on the iPod. This has nothing to do with Leopard, previous versions of OS X do the same thing.

  • Very strange wifi happenings with my iPhone 5

    Here's what's up:
I have an iPhone 5 and it is updated to the latest iOS release.  The WiFi connection does something very strange.
There are two saved networks in the phone.  One is a hidden wifi network from work (a public school) that also uses an auto proxy (a URL address).  The other is my home wifi.  I have Verizon Fios.
When only my home network is saved, the wifi at home works perfectly. However, when both networks are saved, the home wifi pretty much doesn't work.  It seems to constantly disconnect and connect with the network; web pages do not load, etc.   At work, with both networks saved in the phone, it works perfectly.
For the life of me I cannot figure out what is wrong.  Now, to make matters even more mysterious, I have an iPad2 with the exact same network settings and with both networks saved in that, it works perfectly no matter where I go- home or work.
Please, does anyone have any ideas as to what is messed up?

  • Superdrive failure or another strange Leopard behaviour?

    Hi everyone,
Has anybody heard of the following problem... I've searched the discussions and can't find anything that matches my problem?
My internal factory standard 'Superdrive' in my Mac Mini has started messing me about...
It will READ all formats of CD that I've tried, but will NOT WRITE ANY FORMAT OF CD whatsoever, no matter how I try to do it (iTunes, image file through Disk Utility, Roxio Toast).
It typically gets to around the point where it is about 95% or so burned, then spits the disc out and gives me an error message.
It will NOT READ OR WRITE ANY DVD whatsoever. It tries to start a write process but then tells me it can't "CALIBRATE THE LASER TO NECESSARY LEVEL TO WRITE THIS DISC".
I've tried different brands of discs, different styles (white top, standard top, black top, etc.), and all variants of writable CD and DVD compatible with the drive. Even the ones I've been using for last few years no longer work
I have tried cleaning the lens, with no joy!
I can not say exactly when this started, but I have not tried to burn any disc or play any DVD on my system since upgrading to Leopard. Could Leopard be the culprit?
    Many thanks.

Thank you. It hadn't occurred to me before because no other equipment in my apartment has suffered... but the building has been undergoing extensive renovation works, which have produced unbelievable amounts of brick and concrete dust and despite best efforts to keep it out of my apartment at the end of every day there's a noticeable layer of the stuff ALL OVER the place!
So, with that in mind and the fact the mini has been running hotter than usual the last couple of months, I opened her up to see how much of this stuff has infiltrated the system housing.
The whole of the inside of the mini was absolutely smothered in the stuff! I've given her a gentle but thorough clean and while I had it apart I tested the drive on a Windows PC. The drive itself is definitely faulty.
So, now the decision is to spend around £100 on an internal replacement (I never liked slot loaders anyway!) or to just buy an external FW unit?
Many thanks again, guys (and/or gals!).

  • Bridge CS3 shows no thumbnails??

Adobe Bridge CS3 has been working fine for quite a while. I have been having
some problems with my System (C) drive, where it and Photoshop CS3 are
    installed.
I swapped out the C drive, and restored an image of the drive, and most
items are working OK. But I'm guessing that Bridge may have suffered some
"corruption", prior to when the image was made.
When I open Bridge CS3, it opens normally. with the files listed on the
lower left, but there are no thumbnails visilbe for any images. Momentarily,
I did see some for one folder, but now they are all not showing anyting at
all in the thumbnail or individual window on screen.
Just for kicks, I double clicked in the middle of where the thumbnails
should be, and an image then opened in Photoshop. So they appear to be
    invisible, but present.
Any suggestions here? Is repair install needed, or is there a setting
somewhere that has gotten messed up, that can be simply fixed??
    Ron Hisch

Hi John,<br /><br />I just took a look at my settings now in Bridge CS3. That box is not <br />currently checked, and the Bridge Cache files are no longer in the <br />associated folders. Apparently this was not the case prior to my problems.<br /><br />I don't remember ever making a choice here.<br /><br />The centralized cache obviously makes it easier to purge when problems come <br />up. Are there any negative aspects of using the centralized cache?<br /><br />What I cannot understand is how essentially all the cache information in a <br />hundred folders in my image tree on my D drive suddenly all became corrupted <br />at the same time. There must have been something else on the C drive that <br />caused this.<br /><br />In recent days, I was in the process of replacing my C drive due to strange <br />happenings, and restoring an image of that drive to the new drive. I would <br />have to beleive that on C drive in a Brdige folder somewhere, there was a <br />"master" controlling file or ?? that worked with the cache, and it got <br />messed up.<br /><br />Ron<br /><br /><br /><br />"John Joslin" <[email protected]> wrote in message <br />news:[email protected]..<br />If the option to "Automatically Export Caches To Folders When Possible" is <br />checked in Bridge Preferences (as Ron apparently did) I can't imagine that <br />the purge can be done system wide with one click.<br /><br />I have always used a centralised cache, for this and other reasons.

  • Kyocera Mita FS3820 - Help

I have downloaded OSX10405.sit from the Kyocertia website but I have no idea how to install it as the printer driver for the printer. When I go to select it when I am updating the driver via preferences, it will not let me choose it. When Click on the actual file, it opens up text editor. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks from a Mac Newbie

Thanks Cup 'o' Tea, your solution solved my problems, even before updating to OS 10.5.1.
Nonetheless, your proposal might not be a general solution. Like you, I am fluent in German and have no difficulties setting up my printer based on what is in the non-English localization folders. For those without such foreign language skills, the fix will be more challenging.
Strangely, Leopard appears to allow access to the non-English localization folders (es.lproj, etc.) while prohibiting access to the English one (en.lproj), even if one signs in as administrator (I'm not good enough in Unix to dare log myself in at root level). This explains why I (and probably many others) didn't come up with this solution, in spite of having snooped around in the Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/ folder.
By the way, I didn't have to copy the ENTIRE contents of the aforementioned folder up to the PPD folder in that path, just the PPD's relating to the printers I use.
    Also, herzlich vielen Dank!

  • Isight 1.9 logic board saga ..... resolved

To recap, I took my G5 isight in with a bad logic board in March. The repair center ordered the part and installed it. They then determined that the replacement board was bad. They ordered a second board. It was installed. It was bad. A third board was ordered and installed. The machine booted and I brought it home. A few days later I noticed some unpredictable fan operation and strange video happenings, including the problem outlined in my other thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1506900&tstart=45
The Apple Hardware Test determined another bad logic board. I called Apple Customer Relations with the hope that they would see the problems I'd had and agree that the unit should be replaced. Well, they didn't buy it, so I took the unit back in to the repair center one week ago today. I called this afternoon and was told that the part was not due in until June 9(!) I called Customer Relations back with this info and they agreed that the unit should be replaced.
It was a frustrating ordeal, but it turned out satisfactorily in the end. I loved my G5 isight, but it seems that this particular machine was snakebit
Thanks to Miriam and the rest of the group here for listening to my whining.

Sometimes a good whine is not only cathartic, it produces results! Glad it all turned out ok,

I recently migrated my MacBook from 10.5.8 to 10.6.8, using the Snow Leopard CD I purchased from Apple. Since then I have noticed a strange ozone smell coming from the MacBook in the area where the hinges are to open and close the unit. I was told by Apple that it probably is not serious and is coming from the fans in the MacBook. It is true that the smell/odor is more intense when the fans are working. Apple said I should take the MacBook to an Apple Store to have the hardware checked out. Everything seems to be working correctly. I am backing up automatically wirelessly to a Time Capsule, which I had not done until recently, although I had purchased the Time Capsule in 2009. I have not noticed this odor before. Does anyone suspect something more serious that may be going on?

You may be smelling it because with the new OS the processor is having to work harder causing it to get hotter then it would with the other OS.  I can't say there is nothing wrong, but what could be happening is just that, it's getting hotter so the fan is spinning faster and moving more air so you are getting more of the smell then you would before.  I would still continue to back it up, and take it to the Apple Store at a Genius Bar and have them look at it to make sure.  Was the computer ever in a smoky environment??

  • Strange text offset bug in Leopard?

A few days ago I discovered this strange bug(?!) in both the iCal icon in the Dock and in iPhoto '09.
The date on the iCal icon are offset and the name of events in iPhoto.
It just came up from nowhere. The day before it was allright. So I reinstalled Leopard, iLife and so on... Everything was fine yesterday, but today the same thing happend.
The only installation I have made today is Adobe CS4 Master Suite. BUT I'm not sure if it happend after or before the installation.. Or maybe hours after the installation.
It's not a serious bug, but very very annoying. Any clues? Trixes? Fixes?
    Images at: http://public.me.com/johannesroth/

The images were easy to view... thank you!
Did you by chance edit the images in a Photoshop app and then export them to iPhoto????
Did you have iPhoto 08 and upgrade? If so, try this, delete this file:
    com.apple.iPhoto.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot. See if the text is still off set.

  • Just done a fresh install of Snow Leopard with all updates,iMac 5.1 behaves strange, sometimes I start Google Chrome and look at youtube videos the computer freezes and shuts down immediately, I believe its  related to overheating ?

Just done a replacement of the pata DVD drive (its new and is working ok),  and a fresh clean  install of Snow Leopard with all updates, iMac 5.1 behaves strange, sometimes I start Google Chrome and look at youtube videos the computer freezes and shuts down immediately,
I believe its  related to overheating ?
iStat Pro shows GPU diode temp at 66 C, CPU at 48 C,  Fan rpms is around 1000
    Any ideas somebody ?
The hard disk has been previously checked with state of the art techniques that have confirmed that the hard disk drive is in perfect condition.

1.5-3 minute boot up as opposed to 15-20 seconds
    And
why it takes a long time to load a lot of things.
    I have restored this
    from a time machine partition.
TimeMachine is only a backup and restore, it won't fix issues in software and according to your information, doesn't even optimize the restore for best performance on boot hard drives.
What you need to do to regain your speed is to understand how your machine works
    Why is my computer slow?
Fix any and all issues in software following this list of fixes
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Then follow this defrag method I've outlined
How to safely defrag a Mac's hard drive
    Most commonly used backup methods
There shouldn't be need to reinstall OS X fresh unless your having file structure issues which if they are should appear when in the Steps, which then a zero erase and install will cure as well as any bad sector issues, the defrag step wouldn't be necessarry on a freshly installed system obviously as the files are written all together, not in portions all over the drive.
    Hope this assists.

  • BC - Strange Happenings?

    Hi All,
Can anyone else elaborate on the mysterious happenings that I am experiencing in my BC Site?
    With the following changes taking place;
    Webforms changing themselves
Content disappearing for the clients site
Dynamic Menu Root Items reordering themselves
I have spoken to “Live Chat” about the above problems & unfortunately my request for explanations has thus far lead to nothing.
Have any other partners been able to have BC check these strange happening – by looking into previous back up version of the Data Centre? Surely BC has these?
On a funny note, the last “Live Chat” consultant asked me for proof… he wanted to see screenshots of the menu prior to it being mysteriously changed! Is he serious?
The dynamic menus root item structure has also change by itself in our Responsive BC Templates also…
    See for yourself!
http://peakhotels.businesscatalyst.com/ The contact should be the last menu item
http://peakhotelsusblue.businesscatalyst.com/ this is a clone of the Au version on the US Datacentre & is the way it should be – same on the EU Datacentre…
    http://agencymind.businesscatalyst.com/  - same here
I haven’t check all of our templates or clients sites as yet, but it seems to be related to the AU Data Center & I suspect that it has something to do with the outage last Saturday night…
Any comments would be appreciated, as I am starting to feel that I am going mad…
    Cheers
    Brendon

    Hey there Sidney,
    Thanks for the response!
There has been a Support Ticket generated - Ticket 1303 has been escalated to Level 2 support
    As you are a Staff Member, I am hopeful that you can answer the following questions for us;
    1. Does BC keep a record of log in details for each site? The reason I ask this is in order to offer proof that I did not effect the changes.
    2. In relation to BC's Data Centres – Can you detail the redundancy measures that BC has in place with regards to their servers & explain why when a Data Centre falls over everything falls over on that Data Centre? – And why when this takes place, that when this takes place a secondary server bank is not activated – which is the case with most other professional hosting solutions.
    3. Is BC able to roll back a site to a previous version when an outage takes place? As I believe that BC should be in the position to offer this feature to it Partners – as BC in in fact a service provider that all partners rely upon heavily to provide us & our clients with the service we are paying for.
I know that within your support team, that there is defiantly a culture that is indicative of placing a lot of the blame for said problems on the actual partners, where by they believe that a lot of issues we face as partners collectively are basic HTML/Coding errors that have been created by the Partner.
This maybe true is some situation, but not in all cases & it is defiantly not a good business practice to let this culture thrive within BC’s Support Team – I was asked by the Support Team member if I could provide prior screenshots of my problems… Yes he was serious!!!
Does BC expect its partners to keep screenshot back up of all its sites? This is actually BC’s role within the partnership it has with all partners.
I am now becoming afraid that BC is not providing the basic level of service to its partners & in fact has dropped the ball in relation to its this & wish to point out that BC has a duty of care to provide it partners with what we are all paying for.
I also now that BC is under a lot of pressure currently to roll out some of the feature sets we have asked for as partners… but really, a strong emphasis should be placed on sorting the data centres & installing effective redundancy measures that work & protect partners from having to redo work that has already been done.
Also it should be noted that I am not a newbie & have been a partner for just on 2 years now. I have over 100 sites on the BC platform, including Responsive BC – which is a responsive template solution for BC partners devloped by Matthew Knighton- MRK Developmet & Myself.
Moving forward, I really hope that BC can address the above issues – therefore we can all prosper.
    Regards
    Brendon

  • Strange problem with Snow Leopard and Netware

Here is a strange one, but I am posting it here because I think it may have something to do with Apple software in Snow Leopard. I recently upgraded my Aluminum iMac to Snow Leopard, and have seen the following, rather puzzling behavior in the Prosoft Engineering client for Novell Netware. The symptoms are as follows. The server volumes mount OK, and I am able to see the files that are located on the server. In column view, when I select a file, I am able to see a preview of the file. Likewise, I can use Quickview to preview the contents of the file. However, when I try to drag a file from the server to my hard drive (any location), I get a dialog box saying I don't have permission to read that file. If I do a get info on the file, it says I have permission to read and write. For graphics files (such as Tiff, which have Preview as their default viewer), double clicking on the file causes Preview to open, but the file isn't opened. Now, what is really strange, if I use Photoshop CS1 to open that same file, it opens fine, and I am able to save it on the desktop, as usual. Likewise, if it is a Word or Excel file, they can be opened in their application, and saved on my hard drive. Does anyone have any idea as to what is going on, and how I can restore normal behavior?
    Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately I don't know what's going on, but we're having the same issue at work on two Mac Pro machines. We installed Snow and everything's been running as good as before or better - except for this issue. One machine had a clean install and one had an update install, and both are exhibiting behavior identical in every detail to what you describe.
We've contacted Prosoft and they're looking into it; official word on their website is that Snow Leopard is fully supported.

  • Strange "loopback device" actions on Mac OS X Leopard

    Hi all,
I want to explain my little problem to you, hoping someone can give me an answer:
from about a week I'm trying to develop an application that use pylibpcap (a python extension of pcap library) to sniff packets on a pc on ethernet and examine udp packets sniffed.
This python program works very well on LAN, on two different computers (1Gnu/Linux and 1Mac), but if I try to make it work on loopback device (both server program and client program), some strange things happen.
    The client simply do this:
    *bunnybox:~ alex$ python*
    *Python 2.5.1 (r251:54863, Oct 5 2007, 21:08:09)*
*GCC 4.0.1 (Apple Inc. build 5465)] on darwin*
*Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.*
    *>>> import socket*
    *>>> s=socket.socket(socket.AF_INET, socket.SOCK_DGRAM)*
    *>>> s.connect(("127.0.0.1",23))*
    *>>> s.send("try to send this")*
    16
Listening on loopback device (lo0) with Wireshark (a Sniffer Program), it returns (this is the exported log):
*No. Time Source Destination Protocol Info*
*11 2.840622 127.0.0.1 127.0.0.1 UDP Source port: 49256 Destination port: telnet [UDP CHECKSUM INCORRECT]*
*Frame 11 (48 bytes on wire, 48 bytes captured)*
    Null/Loopback
    *Internet Protocol, Src: 127.0.0.1 (127.0.0.1), Dst: 127.0.0.1 (127.0.0.1)*
*User Datagram Protocol, Src Port: 49256 (49256), Dst Port: telnet (23)*
    *Data (16 bytes)*
    *0000 74 72 79 20 74 6f 20 73 65 6e 64 20 74 68 69 73 try to send this*
*As you can see, there is a problem on UDP checksum.*
But if I try the same command on a different computer on my LAN,
for example: a Gnu/Linux Box of Address: 192.168.1.20 (Mac OS X has address: 192.168.1.100),
    this is the python code:
    *alex@boxxolo ~ $ python*
    *Python 2.4.4 (#1, Oct 28 2007, 15:48:55)*
    *GCC 4.1.2 (Gentoo 4.1.2)] on linux2*
*Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.*
    *>>> import socket*
    *>>> s=socket.socket(socket.AF_INET, socket.SOCK_DGRAM)*
    *>>> s.connect(("192.168.1.100",23))*
    *>>> s.send("try to send this")*
    16
and this is the result sniffed by Wireshark on Mac Os X Leopard Computer (this is the exported log):
*No. Time Source Destination Protocol Info*
    *4953 57.558319 192.168.1.20 192.168.1.100 UDP Source port: filenet-tms Destination port: telnet*
*Frame 4953 (60 bytes on wire, 60 bytes captured)*
    *Ethernet II, Src: 00:e0:18:29:74:28 (00:e0:18:29:74:28), Dst: 00:19:e3:43:85:e8 (00:19:e3:43:85:e8)*
    *Internet Protocol, Src: 192.168.1.20 (192.168.1.20), Dst: 192.168.1.100 (192.168.1.100)*
*User Datagram Protocol, Src Port: filenet-tms (32768), Dst Port: telnet (23)*
    *Data (16 bytes)*
    *0000 74 72 79 20 74 6f 20 73 65 6e 64 20 74 68 69 73 try to send this*
As you can see, no errors on UDP Checksum, datagram correctly received and no problems.
*NOTE: don't care about port 23, because no telnet or other services are listening on it, it's only a closed port.*
    I don't know if it's a bug of loopback device (lo0),
or a bug of Python's Socket, or pcap problem..
Hope someone can give me an answer,
PS: If this is not an appropriate place to publish this type of question, please tell me where I can.
    Have a nice day,
    Alessandro.

    Hi,
Have you receive some answers about your problem because I have the same ...
    Thanks,

  • Strange happenings, ooh er?

    G4 PowerMac
    Dual 1.42 GHz processor
    GB DDR SDRAM
    OS X 10.4.11
Strange happenings with my beastie! Recently switching on to network my home set up and anticipating the perennial problem this G4 has in holing configurations, I opened system preferences. But instead of seeing the usual icons representing features in the various categories, the majority look like dog eared pages nailed to a board with pins top left and bottom right and a mini icon over the left bottom; the top right corner forming the dog ear? How do I change them back - and what has happened to cause this? I mean, I haven’t altered any settings; the only chore this mac is used for is down loading images from my camera and maybe exporting them across my network.

At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.

  • Strange AW File Icons under Leopard

Since I installed Leopard, my AppleWorks files all have a strange icon, an empty, dashed square with rounded corners. The info panel shows it as "Open with:" AppleWorks 6, however, there is a spinning "gear" and "Fetching..." below the "More Info:" heading. (More research shows that this "Fetching..." behavior is also true of non-AppleWorks files. I'll post that observation separately.) If I double-click on one of these files, it opens normally in AppleWorks. AppleWorks (6.2.9) in the Dock still has the normal icon. So everything seems normal, except for the user file icons. What happened them?

Here's a thread in Feedback about Discussions with the information you need to put images in your posts.
Another possibility is that OS X is "confused" about what program is to open those files. Using Disk Utility to repair permissions & restarting your Mac will sometimes "fix" the problem.
If you can't post a picture & repairing permissions doesn't work, send me a couple of the files, or at least a picture of them, & I'll see what I can decipher.

  • Strange Print Sharing Issue from Leopard 10.5.1 to XP machine

    Hi,
I'm experiencing an issue with sending a print job from an XP-based PC to a Leopard-based PC which has a printer attached to it (Xerox Printer).
The software that's used as a print server is efi Splash Server which routes a non-standard IP address to the printer (169.x.x.x)
I am able to send print jobs from the print server itself correctly.
I am not able to send print jobs from an xp based PC which is connected to the print server by the LPR port.
I've sniffed the network traffic and the job seems like its travelling through port 9100 and makes it to the print server but then it loses itself from there.
I can see the printer statistics from the Windows-based PC but I can't seem to successfully print to it.
We have standard user accounts setup for running the efi Splash Server software so I've ensured that the CUPS config file has been modified to allow standard users to use (a) the lpd service and (b) provided with read/write access to the Splash Server folder for everyone to ease future maintenance.
I'll (a) double-check the firewall and (b) install separate drivers and then try connect that way but do you have any other suggestions I could try so I can resolve this issue?
If I'm communicating across port 9100 as a standard LPR port then do I need SAMBA or Bonjour switched on?
    Regards,

Can you explain your network to us again? What's connected where? Is the Splash server a black box type device or just software on the Mac?
A 169.x.x.x address usually means self-assigned (IE, the router didn't respond to an address request). A different subnet address usually won't work, because routers look outside the local net (IE, the internet) when trying to connect to that IP address.
Or, you can just wait until someone here with Splash Server experience comes by.
