Strange mighty mouse pointer: arrow gone

My mouse pointer has been acting strange recently (maybe connected to 10.4.3?); it seems to only be in Safari not in Finder or other programs. The mouse pointer normally adapts to what it's over: it's a thin vertical line when over text, a hand when things can be moved, and usually an arrow. But now it's turning to a text-line icon as soon as it enters the safari screen, whether it's over text or not. If I right click it twice it goes back to arrow, but otherwise it's the wrong pointer. This is most annoying when I'm using the scroll bars or trying to click tabs (since it's not intuitive to scroll using a text edit vertical line, and even more difficult to close a tab with a line rather than arrow!).

Actually got solved by pulling usb plug out of keyboard and plugging it back in. I think it was caused when I pulled out the keyboard usb from back of machine, somehow messed up the mouse which was plugged into it.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.

  • Mouse pointer arrow is frozen

My mouse arrow is frozen! Any suggestions?

My mouse cursor is frozen, too. It's probably a very different situation from yours, but I'm replying here since yours is a recent post and someone is likely to see it. If not, I'll start a new post.
A long story, but probably relevant:
My Mac is a G4 that has inherited the hard disks from a succession of older Macs that it replaced. So now, having just installed OS 10.5.8 on a disk that had no OS on it, I have 10.5.8 and 10.4.11, each on its own disk, and 10.3 Panther plus OS 9 both on the same disc, plus a couple of other discs with nothing on them, all in the same box. That might seem like asking for trouble, but another Mac whiz on this forum tells me it should be okay.
My problem for some time has been that Protools (made by Digidesign, owned by Avid) won't load, since it complains that the "Digidesign hardware is in use by another application (-1133)". After much gnashing of teeth I finally experienced the dim light bulb of just looking up the <expletive deleted> error in google, and Lo and behold, it's simply that my version of Protools is not compatible with 10.4 or 10.5.
Okay, so back to 10.3, but...
Now when I boot 10.3 (via that StartUp choice in System Preferences), I have the frozen mouse cursor in the upper left corner of the screen just like you.
    Consider:
    -  Now that I recall, it was THIS environment, 10.3, where Protools was always working, despite the fact that OS 9 already resided on the same disk, so having OS 9 there is not the problem.
    - The mouse and keyboard were working just fine minutes earlier in 10.4.11 and 10.5.8 as I went back and forth between them trying to uninstall Protools for a clean install of it afterwards. So the mouse and keyboard themselves are probably not the problem.
    - The mouse in question is a new 'Mighty Mouse' that arrived with a G5 I just bought. It's an optical mouse, and the light that shone on the bottom of it earlier (with 10.4 and 10.5) shines no more.
    - Other mice, that had been working shortly before I switched to the new Mighty Mouse to try it out, now no longer work in this new 10.3 boot. So it can't be simply that 10.3 is not compatible with the Mighty Mouse.
    - The keyboard apparently doesn't work either, but I can't be sure since I can't open a doc or window to try to type anything.
    - Now I'm STUCK, since with no input devices I can't tell the Mac to boot in 10.4.11 or 10.5.8.
    - I already tried the strategem of holding the Shift key down while I re-boot. It didn't work, but then maybe that's because the keyboard stopped working.
    - And No, nothing is unplugged!
    Thanks in advance!

  • Wireless Mighty Mouse Pointer not moving

Need some advice. My 7 month old IMAC wireless mighty mouse is scrolling fine but does not move the pointer...can someone help? Thanks!

    Hi Rich:
That file is located in Macintosh HD>library>preferences. Sometimes (rare, but it happens) preference files become corrupted - causing all sorts of odd behavior.
If that does not help, try resetting the PRAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
If that does not fix the problem, take the mouse to an Apple store or call Applecare and indicate you have a warranty issue. Apple does replace things under warranty at no cost (shipping paid both ways). I have had a mouse and keyboard replaced in the past and was pleased with the service.

  • Mouse pointer has gone mad on NB100

Started a download from the iTunes store, came back 30 minutes later to find my mouse pointer jumping erratically in a vertical direction. Had to disable the synaptics pointing device driver and plug in a USB mouse. After rebooting and restarting the mouse driver it appeared to work mostly correctly again until today where it's doing the same thing.
Has anybody else experienced this? I'm coming to the conclusion that the touchpad and keyboard on this device are just very poor indeed.

    Hi,
Thanks for your reply. I uninstalled the Synaptic driver and installed the Microsoft one. Still does it, although it is intermittent. When it happens, if I tap the touchpad in the right place it stops. So, it does look like there is something wrong with my touchpad.
Once I back my HD up I am going to revert back to the original factory install. If it still does it then - and I'm fairly sure it will - I guess it's off to Toshiba to get repaired.
I wouldn't mind so much had it not been for the fact that the netbook has had very little use indeed - maybe as little as 100 hours in total as I tend to only use it when on holiday / visiting the parents.

  • Mouse pointer has lost its place in the shapes list

Suddenly, my mouse pointer exhbits a mismatch of shape and current context.
    Examples:
On the compose page of ASC, placed in the left or right margin, or anywhere from the to of the screen to the space below the grey bar of buttons that starts with the apple and ends with the search box, the pointer has the expected black arrow shape.
Hovered over Apple Support Communities, New, Your Stuff, History, Browse, or in the spaces along that line, it changes to a cross with centred dot similar to the drawn shape below:
Placed in or beside the formatting controls above the compose box, it returns to the expected black arrow shape, whether over the grey area or the cfomatting buttons.
In the text entry area, whe're back to the cross, very difficult to pick out on the page, especially when it's somewhere in the text.
The cross remains as I move the pointer down the page. There's a quick flash of the arrow to the left and slightly above the cross as the pointed moves downward across the word Categories, and across the words in the list of categories below, and from there to the bottom of the page.
The cross gets substituted for other pointer shapes as well—On Google Maps, the cross shows until I press the mouse button to grab the map, then changes to the enpected closed hand when I drag the map in any direction. In Sreet view, I get the arrowm the cross, or an I beam in the circle that indicates where a click will move the viewpoint, or a cross in the circle that indicates the center of a magnified view.
Questions: What's happening? How do I fix it?
    Comments and suggestions apreciated.

    Hi Linc,
Thanks for the pointer. Neither of the Adobe plug-ins mentioned in the linked discussion are installed on my MBP; in fact the only one installed is the Google Earth We Plug-in.
In the meantime, the mouse pointer has gone back to behaving normally. The only significant action I can think of is that the MBP was shut down for a little over 10 hours today. I had restarted it a couple of times last night, but had not let it sit for any extended time.
    Still a mystery.

  • Finder pointer arrow/hand/watch has acquired a strange color

    Hi,
About a week ago my Finder selection pointer (arrow, hand, and watch) changed from its usual black-and-white color to black-and-yellow. That is to say, wherever the color used to be white is now yellow. Specifically, the edges around the black selection arrow are now yellow, and the inner parts of the selection hand and the timer/watch (the one that indicates that the computer is busy) are also yellow instead of white. I searched the System Preference panes as well as the utilities TinkerTool and OnyX but couldn't find a solution to this strange problem. I also trashed the Finder plist file and restarted the computer to no avail. Can anyone please help me restore my selection pointer to its normal black-and-white color?

Actually got solved by pulling usb plug out of keyboard and plugging it back in. I think it was caused when I pulled out the keyboard usb from back of machine, somehow messed up the mouse which was plugged into it.

    Hi,
I work for Dr Pod, an iPod repair company. This sounds to be that the hard drive is dying in the iPod. As it is an older iPod it is out of its one year warranty, the iPod won't be repaired for free by Apple, and you'd need to consider wether it'd be better to have the iPod repaired by an iPod repair company such as my own, or to purchase a new one from Apple.
If you did choose to purchase a new iPod from Apple, then they do provide 10% off the cost of a new iPod if you exchange in your old one. I'm not sure if this applies to faulty ones though (I have heard of some people being turned away for having a faulty device).
    Hope this helps,

  • How to change mouse pointer to Arrow?

When we move the mouse over any component in preview (or in SWF file), mouse pointer changes to u201Chandu201D. Is it possible to keep the mouse pointer to Arrow or any other custom mouse pointer in Xcelsius 2008 SP 4?
    Thanks

Mouse over cursor is set to ARROW if the component is not selectable
Eg:pie chard which has no drill down or no furthur selection is enabled then the mouse over by default is ARROW.
If you have enabled any furthur selection for that component the by default mouseover is HAND .
This holds good for all the components in Xcelsius (even in sp4) Except for tab set container component where the selection of tabs is displayed with Arrow  symbol.
New features that sp4 provides is 1)Waterfall chart 2)Alerts are  supported for spreadsheet tables, and for
    combination charts.

  • Mouse Pointer Randomly Changes From Arrow to Pen

A few weeks before I upgraded to Lion, I noticed my mouse pointer started changing from an arrow image, into that of a pen. When I upgraded to Lion, it carried over in the same manner. It doesn't happen all the time and I can't seem to find any explanation for when it happens. Anyone ever seen this? I've checked all the system preferences, including Universal Access and can't find any settings that would have caused it to do this. Any suggestions?

    Welcome to the discussions.
Which program or application are you using when this happens?
The mouse pointer changes depending on the type of content on the screen. If the pointer is over a link which can be clicked, it appears as a pointing finger. If it is over text which can be selected, it becomes an "I" (rhymes with "eye") so that you can select text or click at a certain point in the text.
    See Mac Help.
Sometimes it is very easy to unwittingly click the mouse and select something, which can change the screen. The mouse can be quite sensitive. So this may be what you are experiencing.
If you are trying to do a specific thing and it's not working, tell us and we can be more helpful.

  • Mouse pointer disappears and makes strange movements

First: I'm afraid my English is not good enough (I speak Spanish).
    So,
Sometimes the mouse pointer disappears but it's still able to click. It reappears when I do right click. Also, sometimes the pointer have a strange behavior, like crazy movements very fast. I just wait 10 second and it work fine again. I don't know if anyone here have this problems too.

You won't believe this but just cleaning a mouse can improve performance... read the following:
How to Clean a Mechanical Mouse
This article explains when and how you should clean a mechanical mouse. It does not apply to the the Apple Pro Mouse.
You should clean a mouse if it is does not track smoothly, or if it jumps or skips. A mouse contains a small ball that must roll smoothly for the mouse to work properly. You should keep this ball free of dirt and oil by using the mouse on a clean, lint-free surface, and cleaning it occasionally.
Use the following procedure to clean a mouse:
    1. Turn off your computer.
    2. Turn the mouse upside down and rotate the plastic ring on the bottom counterclockwise to release it.
    3. Turn the mouse right side up with one hand and catch the ring and ball with your other hand.
    4. Clean the three small rollers inside the mouse with a cotton swab moistened with water. Rotate the rollers to clean all around them. If there is a build-up of material on the rollers that the cotton swab does not remove, you can use your fingernail to gently remove the material.
    5. Wash the mouse ball in soapy, warm water with a mild soap such as a dishwashing liquid if oil from your hands has collected on it. Be sure to dry the mouse ball thoroughly.
    6. Gently blow into the mouse case to remove any accumulated dust.
    7. Put the mouse ball back in the mouse case and replace the retaining ring.
If cleaning the mouse as described does not correct your issue, the mouse may need to be replaced. Have an Apple Authorized Service Provider check it for excessive wear or other failure.
If that doesn't do the trick, if this is a mouse that required 3rd party drivers, you might try reinstalling the drivers. Also, try going back to default Mouse preferences on all Users, see if makes a difference.

  • Mouse Pointer shows "Edit Cursor" "|" where it should be a arrow (pointer)

I have noticed that at times the mouse pointer shows a Edit cursor when it should be
    a standard mouse arrow.
This happens when a leave one application and navigate to another application.
I am able to use the "|" cursor to click, but it seems rather odd.
I would really like to know if someone else has noticed this?

Are you using Fast User Switching (FUS)? Are you running an application that keeps a window always on top?
I have encountered a reproducible problem which causes the mouse pointer to fail to revert to the default arrow. I do not know if it is a general OS X issue, or caused by this specific app only (I just reported the problem to the app vendor, will report back on the resolution).
In my case, if user "A" is running a program that has an "always on top" window, and that application has the "focus", and I then use FUS to switch to any other user, the mouse pointer for that user will "stick" in its most recent variation - be it a pointing finger (for a link), an edit cursor, a window resize cursor, etc. If you move from a link for example to a text box, the cursor will change to the new form, but it will not revert to the default arrow. To "solve" the problem, do this:
before using FUS to change to another user, click on another application (e.g. the Finder), so that the problem application does not have the "focus". Does any of this relate to your problem?

the-edmeister, you are a genious. I went to "view" then "toolbars" and de-selected "yahoo toolbar" and then moved the curser over my firefox page and it now works completely including the problem area (the top 3 cm of each screen). • Strange problem with Mighty Mouse scroll ball

    Hi,
yesterday suddenly my Mighty Mouse start to have a strange mood. Using scroll ball to go down in a page I haven't problem, but trying to go up don't happened nothing! The problem seems to be software, because the hardware seems to be good.
    What can I do?
    Bye

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302417 How to clean your Mighty Mouse
Take a piece of bright white paper, turn the mouse upside down on it, press down on the ball, and run the mouse quickly in circles over the paper. This will remove all the gunk that's building up on the ball
TIP: To get to the gook inside the scroll nipple use a plastic toothpick.
"Other Options:" Wear latex disposable gloves. A box of same can be purchased from your local Dollar Store or Pharmacy.
Some cell phone leather cases actually fit right over the Mighty Mouse.
Clean/wipe the Mighty Mouse off with a damp cloth/rag prior to going to bed each evening.
Some users have found using the small alcohol pads quite successful. These can be obtained from any drug/pharmacy or Dollar Store.

  • When mouse pointer changes from arrow to cursor it starts to flicker

I am running Windows 7 on a Toshiba laptop (P500-ST5807).
When the mouse pointer changes from arrow to cursor it starts to flicker. The problem seemed to start after I clicked "hide pointer while typing". I tried unchecking "hide pointer while typing" but this did not correct the problem. I have also tried adjusting the touchpad settings to less sensitive -- this did not help either. I have searched the internet and all types of "cursor flicker" seems to be a common problem.
Would anyone have a simple solution?
Thanks in advance for your help,
