Strange Permissions Behavior with Public/Private Drop Box

Strange Permissions Behavior with Non-Course Drop Box
In an effort to promote iTunes U on campus this semester (and to get people working with audio and video more) we're having a contest in which people can submit personal or group audio/video projects.
This being an iTunes promo, we intend for students to submit their contributions via a drop box.
To that end, I began experimenting with drop boxes in iTunes U, which I haven't done much of previously. I've created a course called "iTunes U Drop Box Test" under "Campus Events". Within that, I have two tabs: "Featured Submissions" and "Dropbox". My goal with this drop box was to allow faculty, students and college folks the ability to use the drop box ("college" being a role I've defined for those who don't fit into the faculty/student roles).
When I first started experimenting, access to the "iTunes U Drop Box Test" course looked like this:
--- Credentials (System) ---
Edit: Administrator@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:lafayette.edu
Download: Authenticated@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:lafayette.edu
Download: Unauthenticated@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:lafayette.edu
Download: All@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:lafayette.edu
--- Credentials ----
Download: College@urn:mace:lafayette.edu
Download: Instructor@urn:mace:lafayette.edu
Download: Instructor@urn:mace:lafayette.edu:classes:${IDENTIFIER}
Download: Student@urn:mace:lafayette.edu
Download: Student@urn:mace:lafayette.edu:classes:${IDENTIFIER}
For the "Featured" Submissions tab, I gave the non-system credentials the "download" right, and for the "Dropbox" tab I gave the non-system credentials the "dropbox" right.
My understanding of this setup is that everyone should have had the ability to view the course and the contents of the "Featured Submissions" tab and that those in the College/Instructor/Student roles would be able to upload files via the "Dropbox" tab ... but not see the contents of said tab after the files were uploaded (aside from any files they uploaded themselves).
This is not the behavior we saw however. While the College/Instructor/Student roles could upload files to the dropbox, everyone (including the unauthenticated public) was able to see all of the contents of the dropbox.
The only way I could get this to work as advertised was to change all of the system credentials save the "Administrator" to "No Access":
--- Credentials (System) ---
Edit: Administrator@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:lafayette.edu
No Access: Authenticated@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:lafayette.edu
No Access: Unauthenticated@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:lafayette.edu
No Access: All@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:lafayette.edu
Once I did this, everything worked as advertised: College/Instructor/Student roles could upload tracks, and the "Dropbox" tab would only display tracks they uploaded.
So my question is ... is this the correct behavior for the drop box? It looks like when the system credentials are in play, they're simply overriding whatever the normal "view" rule is for the drop box, which doesn't seem right.

Your current configuration where things work as you wanted does seem correct to me. You are not using any System Credentials to accomplish the functionality and that's fine.
Here's some more info to clarify how / why this is working for you and why you had to set "No Access" for the System Credentials:
The System Credential "Authenticated@..." is going to get assigned to any user that goes through your transfer script. Even if you transfer script assigns no credentials to a user, upon entering iTunes U they will have at least 1 - the "Authenticated@..." credential. Therefore, unless you block access using "No Access", any user that passes through your transfer script is going to be able to access the area in question.
When you change values for "Unauthenticated@..." or "All@..." you are defining what someone that DOES NOT pass through your transfer script can do. You want both of those to be "No Access" at the top level of your site if you do not want unauthenticated visitors.
The distinction between "Unauthenticated" and "All" is that "All" applies to all users whether they pass through the transfer script or not.
Here's another way to remember things:
User passes through your transfer script, iTunes U automatically assigns:
Authenticated@....
All@....
User does not pass through your transfer script and instead access your iTunes U site through derivable URL*, they get assigned:
Unauthenticated@....
All@....
*The derivable URL for a site is: http://deimos.apple.com/WebObjects/Core.woa/Browse/site-domain-name

  • Easiest Way to Share Files Between Users? -- Public, Shared, Drop Box.. .

    We have five family members (and so five user accounts) using our Mac. What is the easiest way to copy files between / share files with / ... files from one user to the other?
    Shared ... Public ... Drop Box ...
    I do this so infrequently that I forget -- or have never figure it out properly.
    Any advice would be great.
    Thanks!

    The Shared folder is fine, but anything a user puts there will be read-only to all other users. If other users want to be able to edit such a file they can make a copy of it and edit the copy. If you want all users to be able to edit one of your files without them having to make a copy of it first, you must change the file permissions to allow that.
    There are a few ways to have new files automatically set so that others can write to them. Storing such files on an external hard drive on which file/folder ownership is set to be ignored is one way. You can also use ACLs - see this page for an example.

  • Strange window behavior with CS5

    I have begun experiencing strange behavior with PS CS5. I should begun with the machine configuration: 2.66GHz iMac (8,1) Intel Core Duo with 4GB RAM and OSX 10.6.6, Radeon HD 2600 Pro graphics card. The initial symptom showed up suddenly as an inability to display an image window; that is, I could open PS normally, everything would show up properly, but when I opened an image file of any sort, there would be no image window. Other cues indicated that the file was open; for example, the window menu would show it selected, and the layers palette would show the file's layers.
    It did not seem to matter what type of file was involved: PSD, JPG, TIF, whatever. Occasionally, this behavior would begin during a session. Sometimes it would happen right off the bat. Sometimes, stopping and restarting PS seemed to clean things up; other times, this had no effect. After messing around quite a bit with different permutations and combinations, all I could say was that the problem was random.
    I might add that I've had PS CS5 on this machine pretty much since it was announced, and had not had problems with it before. So this issue came along quite suddenly a couple of weeks ago. This was a little after I'd installed an update for Nik's Viveza 2; and I began to suspect that. Although why Viveza should do such a strange thing was odd, and Viveza was never part of the files I was experiencing issues with. Anyway, I went back to an earlier version of Viveza and the problem persisted.
    Since I run Time Machine, I also went back to versions of the entire PS folder from a month back, and found the same problem. Along the way, I experimented with the files I was using with PS CS4 & CS3, which I also have installed on this machine. These two versions of PS run perfectly well. At least the CS4 version has precisely the same plugins as the CS5 folder, and this seems to discount the potential problem with plugins.
    To be sure about CS5, I completely deactivated, deinstalled, and reinstalled it. The same issues occurred. Now, I have to admit that I let PS run its update process so that I brought it back to the most recent version in this step of my troubleshooting. So, I can't be certain that the issue isn't with some update of CS5.
    I might add that I have been running CS5 in 32-bit mode, for compatibility with certain plugins. This may or may not be an issue, since I have limited experience with running in 64-bit mode. At this point, I should add a bit more about the confusing behavior.
    While messing around with CS5, I also suspected the GPU support, since my problem had to do with windows. When the problem presents itself, the usual cycle through window views that you get by pressing the "F" key seems to get messed up. In particular, the "F" key doesn't work at all. Next, if you use the View menu to select different views, the full screen with menu bar view will often have garbled pixels, while the full screen view will show a blank grey screen. Then, cycling back to a window view will show a window with blank grey contents. This is interesting since the starting point was no window at all; but going into full screen and then back will produce a window with bogus contents.
    Now, the next strange thing, having to do with the GPU, is that CS5 often fails to recognize the Radeon HD 2600 card. Oddly enough, it did originally. And I had it running in Basic mode. However, CS4 does recognize the GPU; and I can set it in any variety of modes: Basic, Normal, and Advanced. This behavior is not consistent at all either; that is, while CS5 almost always now fails to detect the GPU, sometimes it does. As near as I can tell, this failure to detect the card does not depend upon whether I start CS5 in 32-bit or 64-bit mode. OTOH, CS4 always recognizes the GPU.
    Another form of this odd behavior arises if I start CS5 cold, and then just open a new blank window. This almost always works. I get a blank white window, and I can paint on it with a brush, etc. However, if I go ahead at this point and open a file, then the new file takes over the window; and there are no tabs. If I select the original new file, usually labelled "Untitled", the window bar will show the change of filename but the window's contents and the layers palette will continue to show the old file that I had opened. Cycling through views can sometimes get back to the new Untitled file, but just selecting file windows never works.
    Yet another aspect of this messed up window behavior is that the workspace bar, which shows the Bridge, MiniBridge and view icons on the upper left and the various workspace options and CS Live on the upper right, is present but blank. OTOH, the tool bar is always displayed correctly, as is the horizontal bar that shows the various tool options. Likewise, the palettes for the workspace such as layers, swatches, adjustments, and so on, are always correctly displayed on the left.
    My next steps in trying to figure this out will be to ensure that I am running the latest of all plugins so that I can get everything running in 64-bit mode and try this again. However, the single factor that seems consistent in this whole mess is that whenever I do find this odd behavior, the performance preferences window will indicate that CS5 is not detecting the GPU. Whenever this happens, if I open up CS4 and check the same performance preference in it, the GPU is detected. I can have the two preference windows side by side on the screen in fact, CS4 sees the GPU and CS5 does not. The counter-indication is that sometimes CS5 will work properly and the preferences window still shows that the GPU has not been detected. Having said that, I can add that if I have opened up CS5, and it has found the GPU, and I have set it into, say, Basic mode, and then later found CS5 messing up, and I go back and check the performance preferences again, the GPU has always been lost. So, CS5 can mess up windows with or without the GPU detected and active; but when if it started with the GPU present, it will show up as lost after the weird behavior starts.
    To add one more observation, I have had Macs and other computers with failing GPUs. This computer is showing none of the typical signs of that. Every other program seems to be working just fine, and I have a lot of these, many graphics intensive; e.g., Corel Painter 11, Parallels v6 running Windows 7, PS CS4, Lightroom v3, Aperture v3, and so on. It is just CS5 that is messing up.
    I could load up this message with screen shots of all this nonsense, but I'm not sure what that would add to the strange tale, other than I'm not pulling your legs. I am, however, pulling out my own hair.
    As I stated before, this began quite suddenly a couple of weeks ago, early Feb 2011. My best guess as to cause is some combination of incompatible updates between CS5, OSX, and maybe some plugin or other. I found unusual behavior with onOne's FocalPoint v2 last year after Apple updated GPU drivers in some OSX update, and cratered that program. It took onOne a month or two to fix that. I have CS5 on a laptop with the same OSX version, and on that I haven't seen these issues; but then, I haven't been using it as intensely over there. Also, that machine has different CPU and GPU models than this iMac.
    So, to the community: is anybody else starting to see this odd stuff? Am I alone?

    Here's the reason I say that the same plugins exist for both CS4 & CS5. Sometime last year, the internal hard drive on this computer died (as they so often do), and it was replaced under the Apple care warranty. As a consequence, I decided to rebuild the OS and applications from scratch and bring back my user files from backup. I among other things, I reinstalled all of CS4 as well as CS5 (and I had to put CS3 back too for reasons having to do with printing calibration images for Quad Tone RIP). Then, I went to reinstall the plugins that I needed. I use Nik Software, onOne, Portrait Professional and various Topaz plugins. To my recollection, most of these install in PS CS3, CS4, CS5, Aperture, and Lightroom. In short, it is not that I've copied or moved plugin folders from one application folder to another, just that the installers automatically detect the presence of the various applications and put the various plugins into each, as appropriate.
    The only 32-bit plugins that I have that don't fit into this category are from Vincent Versace. He provides special versions of certain Nik plugins (Tonal Contrast, Contrast Only, etc) that function with some Acme Educational extensions for performing B&W conversion, sharpening, blah blah blah. These plugins are only 32-bit and the extensions are only CS5 compatible. I've installed these ones only into CS5; so, you've got me. OTOH, I've had these from Vincent as soon as CS5 was available; and they've worked so far without problems. Perhaps I should just edit the extensions so I could use the latest plugins direct from Nik instead of the Versace special editions...
    I've checked fonts and repaired permissions. I am presently going through the rather tedious process of disabling plugins and extensions to see if anything yields consistent results. The rather random arrival of the strangeness makes ensuring that a change is really having an effect more difficult to validate, as you will appreciate.
    I apologize for my long-winded original post. I add all of the detail so that anyone who'd experienced similar strange behaviors might properly pattern-match what they were seeing. On the one hand, in finding the cause of a problem, you look for what's changed; and theoretically nothing is new. On the other hand, there's always so much changing behind the scenes with automatic updates of this, that, and the other thing that it's impossible to make the claim that nothing's new.

  • Strange Permissions behavior

    I have OS X 10.4.11 on an iMac with four user accounts. Everything has been fine.
    Today I created a new user account from System Preferences, called "visitor". It seems to work, but I noticed something strange:
    The files and folders in the "visitor" Home belong to user owner "visitor" and also to group "visitor". Seems strange, since my other users all have files and folders belonging to user owner (account name) and group owner "staff". Where did group "visitor" come from, and why does it not use the "staff" group ownership, as with the older user accounts? They are all standard accounts, except for one administrator.
    For all that, it seems to be behaving pretty well, with one minor exception: With my administrator account, using Terminal, I cannot get access to the visitor account directories. When I do cd (directory name), nothing happens, not even an error message. A pwd reveals that the cd did not change the working directory. If I log in as root, I can roam this user hierarchy freely, but not as an admin user. I assume this has to do with the unexpected group ownership...
    No serious problem, but the weird behavior has me believing I did something wrong. I tried running a Repair Permissions, but it did not change this.
    I think I created those older accounts using the same procedure, but with earlier versions back to 10.2.

    You didn't do anything wrong. That is normal in Tiger. In earlier versions of OS X and, I believe, in Leopard, users are members of the staff group and the standard ownership on files in their home directories is username:staff (i.e. owner username, group staff).
    In Tiger, Apple changed this so that every user corresponds to a unique group of the same name. The default settings on files in users' home directories is username:username. When you created the new user, you also created a new group by the same name.
    The older accounts reflect the settings in the version of OS X in which you created them. When you migrated those accounts to Tiger, the migration assistant must have brought the default ownership settings etc. over. It is actually these accounts which are anomalous by Tiger's standards. I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it, though, unless, perhaps, you have users you really cannot trust.
    I believe the change in Tiger was security related. In Leopard, the default use of Access Control Lists is used to tighten security instead. Tiger's behaviour is odd, though, and certainly not standard unix behaviour.
    sudo cd does not work. It has nothing to do with the group ownership issue:
    pwd
    -> /Users/myname/tmp
    sudo cd /Users
    -> password:**
    pwd
    -> /Users/myname/tmp
    - cfr

  • Acrobat 9 Pro / Files with public+private key security

    Hi,
    I'm working at a Software Company. We want to create the Help Documents for our Software in PDF.
    We want to take care, that those PDF documents cannot be opened without our Software.
    My idea is to certificate the PDFs with a public key and the private key is hidden in our program.
    I tested a lot and read the manual, but it doesn't work.
    Thanx for some hints.
    Greetings,
    Sven
    Sorry for the lousy English, I'm from Germany.

    You might be able to write some JavaScript to solve the problem, but even in that case you need to be aware that the security of PDFs are not all that secure, particularly if one uses a 3rd party reader. Apparently several of them ignore the PDF security settings and open the PDF anyway. I do not know if that would occur if the PDF were encrypted in some way.
    So much for giving a spin on the topic. Good luck.

  • Grid Infrastructure 11.2.0.3 install fails with public & private subnet

    Specify Network Interface Usage
    Interface Name: eth0 Subnet: 192.168.1.0 Public
    Interface Name: eth1 Subnet: 192.168.1.0 Private
    Using the Advanced Installation ->
    No GNS ->
    I'm getting error [ins-41113] Specified public and private interfaces are configured on the same subnet: 192.168.1.0 Why is this an error because Oracle Documentation e17212/typinst.htm says the following:
    A Single Client Acess Name (SCAN) for the cluster , wich the following characteristics:
    * Three static IP address; however I want to use only two static IP address because I am not using DNS I'm using /etc/hosts file.
    * On the same subnet as all other public IP addresses, VIP addresses, and SCAN addresses.
    Please advise because I was able to install Grid Infrastructure 11.2.0.2 using the same configuration with no problems. Now that I am using Oracle 11.2.0.3 I'm encountering this problem.

    Hi,
    I appreciate insight with respect to Why Does it work in Oracle Grid Infrastructure 11.2.0.2 and not in 11.2.0.3 ?Some things that are not supported, are sometimes allowed by Oracle Product Software (I can say it's bug), but still desupported.
    See this example.
    In 11.2.0.1 and 11.2.0.2 it's possible add releases prior to 11.2 of Oracle Database to be managed by Oracle Restart. But It's not certified.
    See this thread.
    {message:id=9270783}
    In 11.2.0.3 Oracle solved this issue don't allowing do that and created a new msg error :
    PRCD-1245 : Addition of database version 11.2.0.3.0 is not allowed using srvctl version 10.2.0.0.0So, like example above in 11.2.0.1 and 11.2.0.2 it's not supported use same subnet to private and public network, but it's allowed by Oracle Product Software, now it's not allowed by Oracle Product Software
    The install guide will tell you the following requirements private IP address must satisfy the following requirements:
    *1. Must be separate from the public network*
    2. Must be accessible on the same network interface on each node
    3. Must have a unique address on each node
    4. Must be specified in the /etc/hosts file on each node
    The Best Pratices recommendation is to use the TCP/IP standard for non-routeable networks. Reserved address ranges for private (non-routed) use (see TCP/IP RFC 1918):
    * 10.0.0.0 -> 10.255.255.255
    * 172.16.0.0 -> 172.31.255.255
    * 192.168.0.0 -> 192.168.255.255
    Cluvfy will give you an error if you do not have your private interconnect in the ranges above.
    You should not ignore this error. If you are using an IP address in the range used for the public network for the private network interfaces, you are pretty much messing up the IP addressing, and possibly the routing tables, for the rest of the corporation. IP addresses are a sparse commodity, use them wisely. If you use them on a non-routable network, there is nothing to prevent someone else to go and use them in the normal corporate network, and then when those RAC nodes find out that there is another path to that address range (through RIP), they just might start sending traffic to those other IP addresses instead of the interconnect. This is just a bad idea.
    This above is described on MoS: *RAC: Frequently Asked Questions [ID 220970.1]*

  • Strange SL behavior with other Applications

    For the last couple of days I've been having problems with my SL install. The problem is that its hard to pinpoint where the problems are coming from.
    Some of the 3rd party programs that I have installed all started having problems at the same time so I suspect that SL is the culprit. I have reinstalled all of them with no improvements:
    Microsoft Office:
    Word and Powerpoint freeze when I try quitting them. I have to force quit them to close them completely.
    iStat Menu:
    The memory and cpu usage menus do not display the top 5 processes using memory or CPU. All other functions in iStat Menu work fine. Strange!
    Dropbox:
    Dropbox slows down the Finder (cover flow and general file browsing is slow and jerky) when I launch it. The Dropbox context menu does not work either and no Dropbox related icons are displayed in my dropbox folder. I posted in Dropbox's forum and they helped me some but I'm still not convinced
    http://forums.dropbox.com/topic.php?id=18212&replies=12#post-114185
    Google Video/Audio plugin for Firefox, Google Chrome:
    I am unable to use video/audio conference in either browser. No video icon is displayed in my gmail chat window.
    I understand that this is a long list of somewhat unrelated problems but all them occurred at about the same time which hints to me that there are some kind of system problems (maybe with permissions).
    I have repaired my permissions successfully, deleted the system caches with Onyx, and completely deleted and reinstalled all of the programs that are having problems. I have also started SL in safe boot but that didn't help.
    Please help me! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Strange browser behavior with bookmarks

    Has anyone else noticed strange and/or inconsistent behavior when navigating through projects that contain pages with boomkarks such as
    Bookmark
    <a name="Bookmark"></a>
    (OHJ 4.1.17 and 4.2.2)
    I notice that when I click on a bookmark that takes me further down on a page, I can't use the Back button to return to my previous location. Often the Back button takes me to the previous topic instead of taking me back to the top of the page!
    I was playing around with the Oracle Help Guide and noticed that somehow they have got their bookmarks working properly...but then actually after playing around with it I'm noticing that the behavior is very very inconsistent. For some topics the bookmarks seem to work well (sometimes), other pages not at all. Most pages it seems hit or miss. I'm stumped!

    Actually Ryan didn't give a full answer here. The issue with bookmarks is that the ICE Browser that OHJ uses to display the author's HTML pages doesn't notify OHJ when the user clicks on an link to an anchor in the same page.
    Therefore, OHJ had no way of knowing to update it's back/forward functionality. In older versions of ICE,
    used with older versions of OHJ 4.1.x the ICE Browser
    does notify OHJ when the link is of the form:
    Link to Anchor
    So, often authors producing content for OHJ used this as a workaround and always included the file name in the link (even though it is not necessary to link to an anchor in the same file). This workaround doesn't appear to work with the new ICE Browser used with OHJ 4.2.x.
    Oracle maintains a modified version of the ICEBrowser and I will look into making use of Oracle modifications to fix this problem permanently.

  • Strange CSS behavior with IE9 and JDeveloper 11.1.1.6.0?

    I am working with JDeveloper 11.1.1.6.0 and ADF. There is a single skinning CSS file that is just over 7800 lines. Everything is fine in Chrome, Firefox, IE7, IE8, and IE10. However, when running the application in IE9 some styles are not getting applied.
    I noticed that the elements that were not getting styled were further down in the CSS file (around line 7500). I cut and pasted the styles at the beginning of the CSS file, refreshed, and lo and behold the elements that were not styled before were now getting their styles (I could inspect the page and see that the CSS wasn't getting loaded at all - not an issue with the CSS selectors not matching the HTML being rendered).
    First I thought it may be a file size thing, but after reading this post, I'm not so sure. Plus that wouldn't explain why I only have the problem in IE9.
    Has anyone run into any issues with IE9? It seems very strange to me that this would be a browser problem. My first thought was that there was some error or invalid CSS being used, but I started with a line of CSS and moved it further down in the order until it stopped working (I changed the background on the header to pink). There was one line of CSS where the background would be pink when applied on the line directly before, but when applying directly after the background was gray again. I scoured the CSS but couldn't see anything wrong with it (see below). I removed the CSS in question and the header background showed pink again. Moved it down a few lines and it stopped getting picked up by IE9. Continued this process but wasn't able to find a solution.
    Here is the CSS in question in case something happens to stand out to someone else (I thought maybe "domready" was a reserved word or something):
    table.plan-slab td.cereal-box af|panelGroupLayout.cereal-box-detail af|panelGroupLayout.plan-cost-domready,
    table.cereal-box td.cereal-box-detail af|panelGroupLayout.cereal-box-detail-wrap af|panelGroupLayout.plan-cost-domready {
        position: absolute;
        left: 5px;
        right: 8px;
        bottom: 5px;

    IE 6-9 do have CSS size limits, may be more pronounced in IE 9.
    IE 10 has the limits raised.

  • Strange sleep behavior with iMac

    I have a very strange problem where my iMac wakes up from sleep mode when I shut off, turn on, or unplug my Sony AV reciever from the power outlet.
    I am using the power button on the front of the receiver, and I have the infrared sensor on my iMac disabled in System Preferences.
    The AV system is connected to a power strip behind my TV, and the iMac is connected to a separate power strip behind my desk. Both strips are on the same circuit in my bedroom, but otherwise are not connected to each other.
    I do not have this problem when I switch power to the lights or my TV, it is only the receiver that is causing this problem.
    Does anybody have any ideas as to why this is happening?

    Two things that I can think of...
    1. Are you using Snow Leopard, and if so does the AV unit have any WiFi capabilities?
    2. You are on to something with the power sensitivity of the iMac, I have similar issues with my 24" iMac when there is a slight power blink at my place. When some spikes occur, my iMac will wake from sleep. I also have the same issue if I plug my vacuum cleaner into an outlet that is on the same circuit, if the iMac is asleep it wakes up as soon as I turn on the vacuum.
    FYI, I solved my wake problem by running a whole new circuit (installed new breaker in panel) to my room (office) specifically for all my computer stuff... Printers, scanners, monitors, computers, external HDD, routers, hubs, switches, modems. All these tend to add up and you take the possibility of overloading the circuit. Same with TV, cable box, AV equipment etc.

  • Strange highlighting behavior with Library books and reinstall?

    I have a Nook Color and Windows 7.  B&N has exchanged my Color Nook twice ....but .............I am beginning to think that the problem is with ADE or something else.
    When I am reading a Library book, about 10 to 15 minutes into the book, I will get some word/words highlighted in the "lookup" form...and then the menu appears.  I can't actually look up a word...the Nook just freezes.  I put the Color Nook to "sleep", turn it back on, and all is well for about another 10 minutes.
    This is happenning with multiple libraries in different states.  So......either it is a glitch in my installation of ADE or it is a problem that the libraries are having.
    I was wondering if anybody else has had this issue.  I don't get any error messages when I download a book.
    I am thinking that I need to reinstall ADE...but am not sure if I will end up getting myself into more trouble.  I also have ADE on my Netbook (rarely use it). I am concerned that I will use up all my "devices" trying to uninstall and reinstall.........and don't know if that will fix the issue.
    Also, WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU FORGET YOUR PASSWORD?  Is there a recovery function at ADE?
    Thanks for the help

    Hi!  It sounds like you have set up your Nook and ADE so that they work
    together and with library software.  And if you can read other ebooks that
    aren't from a library on your Nook, then it's probably not a setup issue.
    So, I am thinking that the issues you're having deal with something in the
    ebooks themselves.
    ADE just copies the text from the source location to its library.  ADE does
    not edit or change the text in any way. Library book software can do certain
    things with the 'tag' file that contains publishing rights.  Chief among
    them is to set a time and date for expiration of the loan.  If your computer
    or Nook clock does not display the same time and date, it's possible that
    the information from the library is getting screwed up so that the Nook
    shuts down the ebook.  So, the first thing I'd suggest is to check the time
    and date settings in both places.  It would be interesting also to try and
    read the ebook on your computer via ADE and see if the same problem occurs.
    You could contact the library help desk and get information on what software
    they're using - that might point to an issue in it if it's the same software
    at multiple libraries from which you've downloaded ebooks.
    Hope this helps!

  • Strange sorting behavior with iOS calendars

    My wife and I both have a two calendars (personal and business) which we are sharing with each other. So four shared calendars, two form my wife and two form myself. All four calendars are iCloud-calendars, two from my wife's account and two from mine.
    All calendars are syncing with several devices: one iMac, two MacBooks, two iPads and three iPhones. Today I found out that on the iOS devices the sorting of the calendars has issues.
    My preferred order is 1) my personal, 2) my business, 3) wife personal and 4) wife business. On iCloud (via browser) this is fine. On al the OS X devices also, but on the iOS devices 3 and 4 are switched (1, 2, 4, 3 instead of 1, 2, 3, 4). I can reorder them to 1,3,4,2 and several other options on the iOS devices, but 1,2,3,4 is not possible. Any ideas?

    I agree Mike; the "IT pride" is a wide spread issue in this line of work that leaves a lame taste of the profession.
    Long story short. It was probably corrupt image though there isn't a definitive way to confirm that (again, I try to stay away from the IT people assumptions).
    What is back and white is the remedy. After formatting the flash and uploading the SAME image the SNMP problem went away.
    Thanks

  • Strange keychain behavior with FM Pro 9 Advanced

    I just installed FileMaker Pro 9 Advanced (replaced 8.5). Now when I attempt to connect to a remote DB on a FileMaker Server 9 Mac I get the following "Confirm Access to Keychain" dialog:
    UNKNOWN wants permission to use the "FMP7:134.139.000.000" item from your keychain. Do you want to allow this?
    Details
    Keychain: login.keychain
    Unknown: UNKNOWN
    Always Allow doesn't work (yes I checked the box for Keychain to remember). I created a new Keychain in case the old one was corrupted to no effect. I can still log in to the FM server, but this disturbs me, and the series of these dialogs is time consuming.
    The reason I'm here is the "UNKNOWN" in the dialog. This is only happening in FM Pro 9 Adv. I've searched the FM Forums and this site for "keychain" and "unknown" as well as phrases from the dialog.
    Has anyone els had this happen?

    Well, learning is good: All I had to do was open Keychain Access, type "FMP7" into the search box and delete the keys that were listed (one for each db). So Keychain Access can search inside the keys. I didn't that, but now I do.
    Guessing here, but the "UNKNOWN" thing might be a change in something FileMaker 9 does from the way FM8 did it that confuses Keychain Access.
