Strategies for managing networks?

How do you guys manage your networks on a laptop?
I've tried the bonding approach mentioned in the wiki, but found it buggy and unstable. What methods do you use to switch between wired and wireless networks?  How about between different wireless ones?

I have just set up this method for my wired connection and I use this method for solely wireless connections.
For laptops switching between wired & wireless connections, I recommend enabling dhcpcd.service and entering all needed wireless connections in /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf using:
# echo "ctrl_interface=DIR=/run/wpa_supplicant" > /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
# wpa_passphrase $SSID $PASSWORD >> /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
EDIT: Use the first line to set up the file then repeat the second line for each wireless access point needed (backup the original wpa_supplicant.conf first).
dhcpcd.service will gracefully switch to the best available connection, it really is superb (thanks @rsmarples!)
I suppose if I were to need connection to public wi-fi access points I would disable these .services and fall back to netctl & wifi-menu

  • Management Network Design - IP Addressing

    Hello !
    I have a basic question with IP addressing for management network. We use management IP address to identify each network element. I have come across two forms of IP addressing for management network:
    1. Assign the IP address directly to an interface (if its a L2 switch, the interface is made L3 using *no switchport* command) of the network element.
    2. Create a SVI i.e., define a management VLAN on each network element, assign IP to this VLAN and assign a port to this VLAN for management.
    Both these designs provide IP termination on the network elements for management using standard network management protocols. I am wondering what's the difference between the two. Any significant advantage of one over the other ? Please share your thoughts.
    P.S. Many vendors don't seem to support command equivalent to *no switchport* on Cisco L2 switches. I presume the reason for this is they don't have MAC addresses on L2 switch ports. Each switch has only 1 MAC address (which identifies the switch) unlike Cisco switches wherein each interface has its own MAC address and can be converted to a L3 interface.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Naveen

    In addition to method #1 and #2 you mention, there's also the use of a loopback interface (applicable on Cisco routers) and, where available, the dedicated Ethernet management port on the device which uses its own management virtual routing and forwarding (vrf) instance, Where applicable, those two methods are the preferred ones as they have a higher degree of reliability and isolation from any routing protocols in the devices' primary routing information bases (ribs or routing tables) and, in some cases even have a dedicated CPU to isolate you from runaway main CPU utilization in the device. For routers the loopback interface is the preferred method. See page 23 of the SBA WAN Deployment Guide.
    Between #1 and #2 you can make an argument either way. #1 requires a dedicated physical layer link which can be a good thing (no dependency on a shared trunk being up) or bad thing (requires using a physical port and possibly a scarce inter-floor or inter-building link). The most common method I see and one recommended by Cisco is #2 - a management VLAN SVI. See pages 19-20 of the SBA LAN Deployment Guide, for instance.
    Besides the IP addressing, there's a lot of good best practices around securing the management plane and deploying centralized authentication etc. Pay attention to those aspects as well. They are covered in some of the SBA Design Guides (parent page here) as well as in the material supporting Implementing Cisco IOS Network Security, the foundation guide for CCNA Security certification.

  • The partner transaction manager has disabled its support for remote/network transactions....When inserting during trigger in linked server

    Hi SHzKhan,
    According to your error message, we need to verify if you configure the MSDTC correctly, When you have more than one SQL Server involved in a Distributed Transaction, you need to make some changes to the default configuration of MSDTC for these distributed
    transactions to succeed. There is a detail about recommending MSDTC settings for using Distributed Transactions in SQL Server, you can review the following article.

  • MAI for managed systems residing in separate network

    Hello!
    We are considering to implement the new Monitoring and Alerting Infrastructure (MAI) with Diagnostics Agents for our SAP systems.
    The most of our SAP managed systems reside in separate network (differ from SOLMAN network).
    In order to retrieve CCMS-data from these systems we must use RFC connections within SAP router string.
    Has someone already successfully set up MAI for managed systems that reside in separate network?
    Of great interest are the information about
    1) Integration of these systems into DBACOCKPIT of SOLMAN
    2) Installation of Diagnostic Agent on remote host
    Many thanks for your information.

    Hello SAP-SDN,
    as for your initial question:
    Has someone already successfully set up MAI for managed systems that reside in separate network?
    Of great interest are the information about
    1) Integration of these systems into DBACOCKPIT of SOLMAN
    2) Installation of Diagnostic Agent on remote host
    1.- actually on process, but still don0t found any problem to do on remote network trought sapruter.
    2.- actually working and running, the unique limitation is the connection between willy hostagent and wily EM.
    as for your next question:
    1a) database related data in your Alerting (e.g. tablespaces)
    1b) database related data in your IT Performance Reporting/Interactive Reporting (e.g. growth of database)
    1c) DBACOCKPIT connection for the remote SAP system
    1a) for ewa ABAP you can get that information from a remote netwaork managed system without any problem
    1b) for ewa ABAP you can get that information from a remote netwaork managed system without any problem
    1c) still on process, but i think that can be possible as well is possible to connect the remote SMD diagnostic agent trought one or more saprouters.

  • HP Management Pack - why would a rule be used for a network card error?

    Hi,
    I am asking this question with regard to the HP proliant management pack but my question is about the more general "rule" v "monitor" question which generally I understand (I think).
    We get alerts for HP network card failures. This is rule based and basically looks for event "2" in the event logs. The same thing happens though if a cable gets pulled or a switch fails for a few seconds for instance.
    The question I am getting asked by admins is to override this as its a "false alarm". I have pointed out people shouldnt just pull a network cable (maintenance mode please!) and if switches are failing then use the SCOM alert to let the network
    team know... Plus if the card genuinly does fail this is the alert. BUT they are asking why isnt this a monitor anyway? If the network card is OK I think event 4 gets logged. So why didnt HP write it as a monitor that would close when it sees the success event?
    My main thinking was if they had you wouldnt get to know about intermitant faults that dont last long. For instance the card would be down for 30 seconds but the monitor would close as soon as it was back up and you wouldnt see it.
    Any thoughts?
    thanks

    My guess is because they have tools that compete with MSFT and do not sell their MP's.  So now they have to have one of their own FTE's creating a management pack for a competing product to monitor their hardware.  If it worked better than HP Openview,
    then maybe more people would switch to Openview and dump SCOM...
    Honestly it comes down to resources, and the fact, similar to MSFT management packs, they are FREE, so how can you justify spending all the time and resources to create something and then give it away for free?  You can't, so you speed through it, and
    drop it to the public, let them find the issues, and stress test it, etc.  (not a fact, just my honest opinion after working with this product for over 13 years).  MSFT is guilty of this as well, they have had their fair share of problem management
    packs...but they are FREE.

  • Same management network for ESXi and UCSM?

    We would like to be able to use the same management network for the UCSM management interfaces and as the management network for VMs running on our blades. For example, we'd like to have the management pool for UCSM from 1.1.1.0 and the VM ESXi management network also be on 1.1.1.0.
    From what I can tell, the mangement network on UCSM is physically separate in chassis from the traffic needed to reach the blade mezzanine cards, correct? So being able to route to the UCSM management network doesn't mean we'll be able to route to the mezzanine interfaces if they use that same network.
    Since our management network (1.1.1.0) is on physically different infrastructure than our data network (2.2.2.0), we're trying to have our 6120 uplink to switches with different views of the network, two for data and one for mgmt. However, the 6120 wants to allow all vlans created on all uplinks, and this isn't working.
    A picture of what we're trying to do would look like this.
    Is this achievable?

    From what I can tell from reading other threads, I need to be in switch mode on the 6120s for this to work. Here are the relevant posts:

  • What is everyone using for managing iPads and iPhones for an Active Directory network. We also have a BES server

    I am seeking a solution to manage iphones and ipads for my enterprise. A few are currently being used. I will need to go back and shut them down to gather the appropriate information necessary to manage them going forward. Looking for manageability, security remote wipe logging. Pretty much what I can do with a Blackberry on a bes seerver. I see several products available. Can someone point me to one that they are happy with?

    The Identity Service for Active Directory 10.3.0 is only available on Windows because it uses .Net functionality to work with AD. Even if you run everything else on Linux, you would still need a Windows server for the AD Identity Service.
    You can download it from edelivery.oracle.com as part number V14368-01. You can also find it on that site by performing a media pack search for:
    Select a Product Pack: Oracle Fusion Middleware
    Platform: Microsoft Windows (32-bit)
    Then navigate down into "Oracle® Application Server 10g Release 3 (10.1.3) Media Pack v31 for Microsoft Windows".
    The package is "Oracle WebCenter Interaction Identity Service for Active Directory 10.3.0 for Microsoft Windows".

  • Multiple libraries, Pbook/Pmac, advice for management & updating please.

    Hi Everyone,
    I travel frequently, and am looking for suggestions to keep all my iPhoto libraries up to date. I currently have a g5, Powerbook, and Mini.
    I just upgraded to iPhoto 6 and I have several thousand photos on my Dual g5. I just came back with 1000 more from my diving trip. The problem is, they are on my Powerbook, and taking up alot of space on the relatively small hard drive. I managed to work through the rough upgrade from 5 to 6, and now I need some more help...
    1) What is your advice for managing multiple libraries of photos.
    2) What is the best way to transfer the iphoto pics (and movies) to my desktop, which of course has the larger storage capacity, after travelling...
    Thanks,

    Jason:
    There are several different approaches to what you want to do. Let me just throw out a couple that I'm familiar with.
    To get the new photos from your PB to your G5 and maintain any keywords, and other organization effort you put into them, you'll need the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager. It will allow you to merge libraries or copy between libraries and maintain the metadata, etc. That's the only way currently available to move photos from one library to another and keep the roll, keywords, comments, etc. with those photos. You can connect the two Macs with one in the Target Mode, probably your PB, and then run iPLM to move the photos to the G5 library.
    Now there is a way to have a library on your PB that reflects the one on your G5 but is only a fraction of the size. That's to have an alias based library on your PB that uses the Originals folder as its source of source files. (My 25,600 files, 27G, are represented by an iPhoto Library folder of only 1.75G). When the PB is not connected with the G5, say with a LAN, it will have limited capabilities which are in part: you'll only be able to view the thumbnail files, be able to add comments, create, delete or move albums around, add keywords (but with some hassle-but it can be done). You can't do anything that requires moving thumbnails around, work with books, slideshows or calendars. Once the two computers are networked together again the library will act as normal.
    Now while on the road you can have a "normal" library to import new full sized files, keyword them, add comments, etc. and then transfer to the G5 library. Once in the G5 library they will be represented in a roll(s) and corresponding folder in the Originals folder. You then fire up the "alias" library, and import those new folders in the G5 Originals folder.
    It may be a lot of work but it may be one way of doing it.
    I've not done any of the "sharing" with iPhoto so don't know if that's another possible candidate for transferring.
    P.S. FWIW I've created this workflow for converting from a conventional library to an alias based one.

  • Best practice for managing Apple ID's in an enterprise enviroment.

    We have just started to incorporate iPads into our Corporate enviroment.  We have had them in use for the last couple of months and to be fair they have worked well but i guess now is the time to try and workout some of the issues we are experiencing with them, the re-occuring issues that just seem to keep haunting us.
    As part of the deployment we gave those with current apple id's the option of using their own, particularly those Execs who already had iPads and iPhones.  We are currently using active sync with our exchange server for access to email.
    How do other people manage Apple ID's?
    How do other people handle the password change scenario.. we have had users on holiday where their passwords have expired and they have been unable to access the email...also the issue of you reset your password on the network but you still need to re-authenticate it on the iPad...does anyone have a decent app that can get us round this?
    what issues have others found?

  • What should the"default behavior" be for WiFi network connections?

    I Have been able to at least temporarily fix the plethora of problems encountered after downloading Mountain Lion to my 2009 17" MBP just ten days ago.  Thanks to the time and effort of so many posters that are much more savvy than me, I successfully executed the steps suggested in many of the posts and with good results.  It surely beats running down to the Apple store and being told that I am the only one with a problem.
    Okay,  I've  realized that I don't really know what the default behavior of the WiFi network connection should be?
    Specifically:
    Should the Wi-Fi drop down in Network always be" looking for networks", even though I am obviously on my Network?
    Should the Wi-Fi be connected at all times even when your computer is in sleep mode- or deep sleep mode?  There have been so many problems with Wi-Fi dropping off,slow or hanging loads, etc.
    I unchecked "ask to join networks, in Network preferences thinking it might stop looking for networks when it doesn't need to because I'm already on mine.  I do see my neighbors (four neighbors) in the drop down in Network.
    How do you get into Time Capsule's settings, to check speeds, especially ping?  What should the ideal settings be?
    How do you know if your DHCP license is renewed? I've heard that feature isn't working and may be the culprit to some of the Wi-Fi problems.
    I'll look forward to your help in understanding more about this.  I've been in the support  area a lot lately, I've read plenty of definitions, and explanations of the different options to choose from in Apple's support area, but nowhere have I seen anything that explains what the default behavior should be or perform  like.
    Thanks, as always.

    Generally, you don't want to tweak the wifi settings. It pretty much takes care of itself. The caveat to that is, of course, if you're experiencing problems.
    The 'looking for networks' behaviour only happens when you log in, wake the mac from sleep OR when you click on the wifi icon. You clicking on it tells the mac  "I want to see what networks are available" - so it does a scan for you to check to see if any new networks have appeared since you last clicked on it (or woke/logged in). In short, if you don't want it to look for new networks, don't click on the icon!
    Unchecking the 'ask to join networks' option only applies when your mac detects a new network (such as when it wakes) that you haven't already authorised; it'll ask you to confirm whether you want to join it or not. Otherwise, if the network is open it'll join automatically. You should keep this selected if you travel around with your Mac. It's a good idea to know what network you're on before you start plugging in passwords or typing other things into the mac.
    There is a utility that you can use for ping and traceroute called 'Network Utility'. Click on the Spotlight icon in the top right of your screen and type "Network' and you should see it at the top of the list. Hit 'return' to open it.
    DHCP licences are normally renewed automatically by your router every 24 hours. Again, there's no reason to be messing about with that unless you're experiencing problems.
    If you're experiencing wifi dropout, let us know, and we'll make some suggestions, but if you're not, you're best leaving your mac to manage the background processes. It knows what it's doing!

  • No Connect / Answers for gv (Network Administrator)

    To refresh your memory, my 2 PC's are wirelessly perfect now, but my laptop is not networking beyond "seeing" the Router via the "Dell Wireless WLAN Card Utility", and even that continuously shows "Authenticating", and disconnects & reconnects every minute or so.
    Answers to your specific questions below (your paragraph pasted @ bottom in entirety).
    Do the security settings on my router & laptop match?
     WRT54G Router Configuration, Wireless Tab, Basic Wireless Settings Subtab:
    * Wireless Network Mode: G-Only
    * Wireless Network Name (SSID): linksys_SES_46146
    * Wireless Channel: 9
    * Wireless SSID Broadcast: Enable
    * Status: SES Security Parameters Configured
      WRT54G Router Configuration, Wireless Tab, Basic Wireless Security Subtab:
    * Security Mode: WPA Personal
    * WPA Algorithms: TKIP
    * WPA Shared  Key: **************** (my actual key is the same on all)
    * Group Key Renewal: 3600 seconds
     DELL B130 Laptop utilizing the 1470 Dual Band WLAN Mini-PCI Card:
    * Wireless Network setup & managed by: "DELL Wireless WLAN Card Utility".
    * Connection Status: Authenticating (Always - never "Connects or locks on" & breaks regularly).
    * Encription Type: TKIP; Key Absent (I think that means hidden).
    * Network Connection Type: Infrastructure.
    * Speed: 54.0 Mbps
    * Channel: 9
    * AP Mac Address: 00:18:38:FD:21:AF
    * Gateway IP Address: Not available
    * Client Mac Address: 00:14:A5:CC:77:28
    * Client IP Address: 0.0.0.0
    Note: The software reports a strong signal from the WRT54G & even sees a few other weak encrypted signals, but nothing shows in Windows Explorer or My Network Places. It's own diagnostics report the laptop's wireless card is working fine. I have been wanting to take this laptop to a hot spot cafe to test the unprotected wireless connectivity & if that works possibly implicating my security settings on the router.
    Any advice or tips would be much appreciated as I would love to add this laptop to the already successfully networked pair of desktops (the remote desktop PC utilizes the Linksys "Wireless-G" Card & software.
    Thx,
    Wayne K.
    Your (gv) original text:
    Regarding the wireless connection problem: You should check whether the wireless security settings on the router and on the laptop match. There are different ways for encryption etc. and if the settings don't match you cannot connect properly.
    For this: go to http://192.168.1.1/ and enter the router password (not the wireless network key) which you have chosen during setup. The default password is "admin". You don't have to enter a username. It brings you to the router configuration pages. Go to the wireless tab. There are subtabs for basic wireless setup and wireless security. Please post current settings.
    For the settings on the laptop there are several options how it uses its wireless card: many laptops come with special software for the wireless card which is used to set it up and connect to wireless networks. You have to find out how your software works and where you'll find the settings if this is the case.
    Some laptops simply use the windows built-in functions called Windows Zero Configuration. To check that, you right-click onto the wireless network icon in the tray and select Properties (or Status and then press the Properties button in the status window). Change to the wireless networks tab. The top checkbox should be active, i.e. Windows is configuring your wireless connections. In the bottom half you'll see the list of preferred networks. Select the network with your network name (the SSID from the router configuration above) and press Properties. Post which settings you have currently for your network on the tabs in the window showing up.

    BTW, please stay in the thread next time. It makes things easier to follow.
    O.K. I see a possible issues here:
    - The Dell status does not show which network name you are connecting to. That should be "linksys_SES_46146".
    - I think "Key Absent" rather means there is no key entered.
    - The AP MAC address is strange. The 00:18:38 is not Linksys but a company called PanAccess in china. That does not mean it is not correct but you should verify it: the MAC address of your router should be printed on the label underneath the printer. This should match.

  • Apple denies replacement due to apparant water damage, wetness indicator is white, iphone 5 has been searching for a network for 5 days and its never got wet

    So my iphone is about 5 months old, over the last week it has been searching for a network signal. Yesterday i blew inside the sim tray to as i thought there was something stuckin there (stupid i know) but today apple denied replacement due to water damage. theres no water damage and the wet indicator is white. any advice on what i can do?? as i know it hasnt been submerged in water or exposed to water the phone was broken before i blew in it...the phne works fine its just not picking up a network

    Take it back to the Apple store and ask for an explanation as to why they believe there is water damage.  They should be able to show a water sensor that has been affected.
    If still unhappy with the explanation, ask for a manager.
    IF that does not get a satisfactory resolution, contact Apple customer care.

    It does not make a lot of sense to optimize a physical schema if you don't know how the schema is going to be used:
    Please read Principles of Application Design and Tuning in http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e10713/cncptdev.htm#CHDEHHIJ
    >
    Design the data model with the goal of good performance
    Typically, attempts to use generic data models result in poor performance. A well-designed data model answer the most common queries as efficiently as possible. For example, the data model should use the type of indexes that provide the best performance. Tuning after deployment is undesirable because changes to logic and physical structures may be difficult or impossible.

  • X301 "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" removed at re booting (XP SP-3)

    Even if I run the “Network Identification Wizard” (under System properties/Computer Name) to join a Workgroup, the box ‘File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks’ remains unchecked.  If I ticked it manually, it remains checked for the current session, but it is unchecked at booting.
    The same occurs with the Windows Firewall (I am running that from Symantec). I switch the Windows Firewall off, but after rebooting, it appears selected again!.
    This happens only with my brand new ThinkPad X301, which came with Vista. The package included a kit to convert to XP, but this installed a ‘naked’ XP, which required downloading from Lenovo and Windows about 1Gb of files (bad service, Lenovo guys!).
    I wonder which “safety” issue of the X301 causes this, but how can I stop this happening? (It does not occur with any of my two old ThinkPads, also running XP SP-3 and Lenovo software).
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    See -> http://www.vistax64.com/vista-networking-sharing/72537-file-printer-sharing-turned-off-reboot.html  Here is the text. Re: File and Printer sharing turned off on reboot
    I FOUND MY SOLUTION!!!
    In my case, it was in Lenovo's "ThinkVantage Access Connections" applet. It
    is additional security that is applied at the CONNECTION level.
    Here is how I fixed it:
    1. Double click on the ThinkVantage Access Connections applet in the
    notification area.
    2. Click on the MANAGE button on the toolbar
    3. Select the SSID where you want File Sharing to work, and click EDIT
    4. Click on the ADDITIONAL SETTINGS tab
    5. Next to "Network Security", click the SETTINGS button
    6. The first option in Security Settings is "Disable file and printer
    sharing". UNCHECK this box. Click OK for 3 levels of dialog boxes, then
    close Access Connections
